Indian batter Tilak Varma has defended his batting approach during India’s T20I tours of Ireland and England, saying his strike rate was influenced by match situations rather than his personal style. Tilak said his only focus is to do what the team needs, whether it is attacking from the very first ball or playing a steady innings, he believes the situation should decide his approach. The 23-year-old pointed out that India often lost four or five wickets inside the first 10 overs on both tours, making it important for him to stabilise the innings instead of taking unnecessary risks. He also said he accepts the responsibilities given to him by the team management and adjusts his game accordingly. Although Tilak scored useful runs on the tours, he was criticised for not increasing the scoring rate quickly enough and for slowing the team’s momentum. “In this game, you have to bat in different places and especially in such conditions, it’s not easy. At the same time, I always say that I do whatever is required for the team. If I have to grind it out and play for the team, I do. If I have to hit from ball number one, then I do that. So at that time, in the conditions of the team, if you look at it, from Ireland to England, you always had four to five wickets falling inside the powerplay or the first 10 overs,” Tilak told reporters in the pre-match press conference. “So going there and then getting out in trying to accelerate, it doesn’t make sense. So what are the conditions of the team? If I have to play for the team till the end, our team’s plans keep changing. So I want to take the same responsibilities that the management gives me, so I’m playing according to that,” he added. Also Read - Zinedine Zidane set to take over as France head coach Tilak registered two half-centuries during the Ireland and England tours, one against Ireland and another against England. India’s struggles began with a surprising 0-2 series defeat to Ireland in Jun and were further worsened by a crushing 125-run loss to England in the second T20I, the team’s biggest defeat by runs in T20 internationals. Another defeat in Bristol would see India lose successive T20I bilateral series for the first time in the 2020s. The last instance of back-to-back series defeats came in 2019, when Virat Kohli’s side suffered a 2-1 loss in New Zealand before being whitewashed 2-0 at home by the same opponents. With both the series and the team’s reputation at stake, Iyer and his teammates will be desperate to end their losing streak and register their first win under the new leadership. India batter Ishan Kishan has opened up about his approach during his time away from the national team, emphasising that consistent performances with the bat are the only way to earn a recall to the Indian side. The star batter made a strong comeback in 2026 after being dropped in 2024 and losing his BCCI central contract. Royal Challengers Bengaluru's star all-rounder Krunal Pandya shared that representing India remains his biggest goal, describing the opportunity to wear the national jersey as unmatched. Reflecting on his recent match-winning contribution against the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League 2026 season at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, he spoke about managing pressure and relying on experience. RCB successfully chased down 206, thanks to a 81-run knock by Virat Kohli and a rapid 55 from Devdutt Padikkal. Speaking at the BCCI Naman Awards in Mumbai on Mar 15, Gill said the team remains motivated after coming so close to lifting the trophy. “Definitely, it does. That is the ultimate goal,” Gill said on Star Sports when asked if he thinks about the next ODI World Cup. Gill said that lifting a World Cup for the country is the biggest dream for any player. He explained that the team felt they were just one step away from victory in the last tournament and are now eager for another chance. He added that the next World Cup will give them a great opportunity to achieve that goal. To be able to get another crack at it in South Africa, it's going to be a great opportunity for us,” Gill said. “Winning a World Cup in any format for the country is the ultimate goal so obviously, that is something that sometimes runs in my mind,” he added. The 2027 ODI World Cup will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia and it is expected to take place in October and November. The team also defended their T20 World Cup title in the 2026 edition, becoming the first side to win it back-to-back. Now, India have the chance to achieve a historic milestone. If Gill’s team wins the 2027 ODI World Cup, they could complete a rare white-ball treble by holding the three biggest ICC limited-overs titles at the same time. If that happens, India would become the first team in history to achieve this feat in one cycle.

After India missed out closely on winning the title in 2023, captain Shubman Gill said lifting the ICC ODI World Cup next year remains the team’s ultimate goal.

India’s big victory in the 2026 T20 World Cup final led to strong reactions around the world, especially in Pakistan. Former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar made a controversial comment, saying India’s dominance has “ruined cricket.” In the final, India comfortably defeated New Zealand by 96 runs at Narendra Modi Stadium and the win gave India their third T20 World Cup title. Many cricket experts praised India for their excellent performance, but Akhtar shared a different view during the Tapmad show Game On Hai. He compared India to a wealthy child controlling a neighborhood cricket match. Team India opener Abhishek Sharma delivered a confident statement despite being out for three consecutive ducks in the T20 World Cup 2026. The left-hander said he will not change the way he thinks or plays, even after a disappointing start to the tournament. Featuring in his first T20 World Cup, Sharma is yet to open his account. In a video shared by Star Sports, Abhishek explained that he stopped putting pressure on himself two years ago and believes he can control only his practice and preparation. He said he is working hard in training and trusts that results will improve over time. Most importantly, he enjoys batting and does not want to feel stressed. He further said that every batter faces ups and downs. Some days bring runs and some days do not. He believes he must decide how he wants to play and stick to that plan. Shubman Gill, fresh from his stellar showing in the recent Test series against England, is emerging as the player in focus ahead of the Asia Cup T20 in the UAE next month. However, he may have competition from Axar Patel for the vice-captain’s role in the Indian squad. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is also set to feature in the tournament, though he is likely to be rested for the first Test against the West Indies in early October. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is expected to name the Asia Cup squad on August 19 or 20, depending on when the Centre of Excellence’s Sports Science team submits the medical report for all players. This includes skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who has resumed batting practice at the nets in Bengaluru. While some tough selection calls lie ahead, the selectors are keen to maintain the continuity that has brought success since Suryakumar took charge as T20 captain. Axar Patel was the vice-captain during the recent home series against England, while Gill had the role when Suryakumar was first appointed full-time skipper in Sri Lanka last year. "Abhishek Sharma is world's No. 1 T20 batter in last ICC rankings. Sanju Samson has been fantastic last season with both bat and gloves. So it will certainly be a tough call but Shubman in current form (although in Tests) can't be ignored. He had a good IPL also. Problem for selectors is, there are too many performers at the top of the order," a BCCI source privy to developments was quoted saying to news agency PTI. This surplus makes it difficult to slot in Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan. KL Rahul, now India’s first-choice ODI wicketkeeper, is also unlikely to be considered as he does not bat in the middle order.
Second wicketkeeper race
Samson is almost certain to take the first keeper’s spot, leaving the second slot to be contested between Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel. Jurel featured in the last T20 series, while Jitesh impressed as a finisher during RCB’s IPL-winning campaign.
Injury update
Hardik Pandya remains India’s primary white-ball seam-bowling all-rounder, but Nitish Kumar Reddy is unlikely to recover from the injury he picked up against England. Shivam Dube, who made an impactful comeback in that series, is expected to retain his place. Axar Patel and Washington Sundar will provide spin-bowling all-round options.
Seam attack question
With Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh confirmed, the third seamer’s slot will likely go to either Prasidh Krishna—who took 25 wickets in the last IPL—or Harshit Rana, known for his heavy deliveries.
Likely Contenders for Asia Cup Squad:
Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wicket-keeper), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana/Prasidh Krishna, Hardik Pandya, Jitesh Sharma/Dhruv Jurel.

Head declared fit for Boxing Day Test

With a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) final up for grabs, Australia were eager to get Head into their Playing XI subject to a fitness test. After tests on Wednesday morning, Head was declared fit and will participate in the Boxing Day Test on Thursday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). His fitness will be a boost for the management, considering his form for the side in the series, with two hundreds.
"Trav's good to go, he'll play," Aussie skipper Pat Cummins said. "He just ticked off some final things today and yesterday. But no worries about injury with Trav. He'll go into the game fully fit.
"I don't think you'll see too much management of him throughout the game. He just kind of plays as is. Maybe around fielding, if he's a bit uncomfortable, we will (manage him), but he's fully fit."

In two changes made for the MCG Test, 19-year-old Sam Konstas is set to make his debut for Australia as the youngest-ever opener for the hosts, replacing out-of-favour Nathan McSweeney. The other change sees Scott Boland replace injured Josh Hazlewood with the former returning after playing the pink-ball Test in Adelaide.

Melbourne, Australia
India skipper Rohit Sharma has declared himself fit for the Boxing Day Test match against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, dismissing any injury concerns. Speaking to the press ahead of the fourth Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Rohit said his knee is doing fine and will be available for selection in the traditional contest. On the other hand, he has also backed the likes of Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill to come good in the series as India chase a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final.

Rohit dismisses injury concern

"My knee is fine," said Rohit on Christmas Eve ahead of the fourth Border-Gavaskar Test between India and Australia.
"Let's not worry about who bats where. Something that we need to figure out and not something I would be discussing here. We will do what is best for the team," Rohit on Kohli's form.
Rohit was hit on the knee on Monday during the practice session at MCG. India will head into the Boxing Day contest fighting for a place in the WTC final, with a win putting them in pole position. Rohit’s men have a proud recent record at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) having avoided defeats on their last three defeats. Interestingly, India have won the last two Tests at the venue under the leadership of Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane respectively. Under MS Dhoni’s leadership, India drew the 2014 Boxing Day Test while Australia’s last win came in the 2011-12 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

So far in the BGT, Rishabh Pant has scored 96 runs in the five innings, scoring at an average of 19.2. On the other hand, Gill has scored 151 runs in five innings, again being a concern for the management. However, Rohit has backed them to come good in the BGT and show their class. Yashasvi Jaiswal has also struggled to cope with the Aussie bowling attack excluding his second innings heroics at Optus Stadium in Perth.
Currently, the BGT is all square at 1-1 after a draw at Gabba between India and Australia. Earlier, India had won the Perth Test with a record margin of 295 runs while Australia returned the favours with a 10-wicket win in the pink-ball Test in Adelaide.

BGT 2024/25: 'My knee is fine, let's not worry,' says Rohit Sharma ahead of Boxing Day Test against Australia

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin's wife Prithi has shared a heartfelt note on the cricketer's recent international retirement. Ashwin retired after the end of the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test at Gabba in Brisbane on Wednesday (Dec 18).
"It has been a blurry two days for me. I have been thinking about what I can say.. Do I put this down as a tribute to my all time favorite cricketer ? Maybe I’ll just take the partner angle? Or maybe a love letter from a fan girl? I guess this is a little bit of all of it.

"When I saw Ashwin's PC, I thought of small and big moments. Many many memories over the last 13-14 years. The big wins , the MOS awards, the quiet silence in our room after an intense game, the sound of the shower running for much longer than usual on some evenings post play , the scratch of pencil over paper as he scribbled thoughts down, the constant streaming of footage videos when he is making a game plan, the calm of meditative breathing before leaving for each game, certain songs playing on repeat while he unwinds.. The times we wept in joy - after the CT final, after the MCG win, after the Sydney draw, The Gabba win, after making a comeback in T20s…the times we sat in silence and the times when we had our hearts broken.
"Dear Ashwin, from not knowing how to put a kit bag together to following you to stadiums all over the world, rooting for you, watching you and learning from you, it has been an absolute pleasure. The world you introduced me to gave me the privilege to watch and enjoy a sport that I love from close quarters. It also showed me how much passion, hard work and discipline is needed to keep your head above water. And sometimes even that is not enough. I remember us talking about why you, R Ashwin, had to do all of this and a lot more to even stay relevant in the scheme of things. How awards, the best of stats, the POMs, the accolades, the records didn’t matter if you didn’t sharpen your skill sets constantly and did not put in the work. Sometimes, nothing is enough. As you end your wonderful international run, I only want to tell you that it’s all good. It is all going to be good. It is time to set the burden of being you down. Live life on your terms, make space for those extra calories, make time for your family, make time to do absolutely nothing, share memes all day, create a new bowling variation, bug our kids out of their minds. Just do it all," she wrote on an Instagram post.
Ashwin sent shockwaves in the cricketing world with his sudden retirement announcement. He retired as one of India's greats, having taken 537 Test wickets, which are second only to Anil Kumble's 619, and 765 wickets in all internationals, again second only to Kumble's 953.
