CWC 2023 Final: From historic 1983 ODI WC triumph to 2013 CT win - Major titles won by Team India

India batter Shubman Gill attributed the cramps he suffered while batting against New Zealand in first semifinal of the ODI World Cup 2023 to dengue he suffered at the start of the campaign. Gill had missed India's first two games of the ongoing tournament because of dengue.&nbsp;

"It started with cramps and then I pulled my hamstring a little bit," Gill said at the post-match press conference. "It was quite humid and just the after-effects of dengue."

"I have honestly not really adjusted anything in terms of my batting but because I have lost a bit of muscle mass, I think the reserve that I used to have before the dengue has decreased a little bit […] You do get cramps when you're playing in humid conditions, but for me [it] happens after a long period of time, not so soon," he further explained. "But because I think I've lost a bit of muscle mass; the reserve has gone down a bit."

Gill, who was batting at 79 off 65, had to be retired hurt in the 23rd over before coming back to bat in the final over post the fall of fourth wicket. The batter remained unbeaten on 80 off 66 and said he would have scored a 100 had he not been hit with the cramps.

"If I didn't get cramp, maybe I would have scored a hundred," Gill said. "But I think the total we were trying to reach, irrespective of whether I scored a hundred or not, we reached there. We had a hope of scoring around 400, we had expectations that by the 25th-30th over we should have scored these many runs, and we did that, so it didn't matter whether I made a century or not."

India, nonetheless, finished on 397/4 in 50 overs, thanks to Virat Kohli's record-breaking 50th ODI ton and Shreyas Iyer's second hundred on the trot. While defending, Mohammed Shami took 7/57 as India won the match by 70 runs to book a place in the final.

India continued their unbelievable run in the home ODI World Cup, with a massive 243-run win over second-positioned South Africa in match 37 on Sunday (Nov 5) at the iconic Eden Gardens in the eastern city of Kolkata. Batting first, India rode on a magnificent start provided by captain Rohit Sharma (40), Shreyas Iyer's 77 and birthday boy Virat Kohli's 101* to post 326 for 5. In reply, Indian pacers and Ravindra Jadeja's five-fer dismissed the Proteas for 83&nbsp;in 27.1 overs.

After the game, Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar lauded Team India, praising their pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami. The former Pakistan pacer feels the Indian fast bowlers deserve more credit and 'it is time to celebrate them' for their wonderful job in the last few matches.

"Credit goes to the bowlers as they are performing brilliantly. It’s high time that you start regarding Indian pace bowlers as you do it for the batters basically. It’s time to celebrate fast bowling in Indian cricket because they have done a wonderful job in the last three to four matches and they are looking apart,” Akhtar said&nbsp;on his YouTube channel.

Bumrah (15 wickets), Siraj (10) and Shami (16) have assured India of terrific start with the ball in the last three-four games, setting the tone for other bowlers to cash in. As a result, India dismissed England for 129 and Sri Lanka for a paltry 55 before rattling the South Africans on Sunday evening.

During the SA run-chase, the Proteas were reduced to 35-3 due to the pace trio's relentless bowling before Jadeja took over.

ODI WC: High time we celebrate India's fast bowling, says Shoaib Akhtar after hosts' big win vs SA

Australia humbled the Netherlands by 309 runs in match 24 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 on Wednesday (Oct 25) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Opting to bat first, Pat Cummins &amp; Co. rode on David Warner's 104, Glenn Maxwell's 44-ball 106 (laced with 9 fours and 8 sixes at 240.91) and fifties from Steve Smith (71) and Marnus Labuschange (62) to post a mammoth 399 for 8. In reply, Scott Edwards &amp; Co. only managed 90 in 21 overs (thanks to Adam Zampa's four-fer) to lose by 309 runs, the biggest-ever World Cup loss by runs. Thus, Australia are now on a roll with three back-to-back wins after defeats in their opening two encounters.&nbsp;

Steve Smith attended the post-win media interaction and was asked about the CWC 2023 edition's current top two teams, i.e. India and South Africa. Rohit Sharma's India and Temba Bavuma-led Proteas have 10 and eight points, respectively, and look set to seal their place in the semi-finals sooner than later.&nbsp;Thus, the right-hander was all praise for India and the Proteas.

While responding to WION's question on India and SA, Smith said, "I think both are playing really good cricket. SA play like we played today. They are trusting their top five batters to go out and build a platform before Klaasen and Miller to smack it at the backend. Obviously, they have played on very good batting surfaces as well, one here (in New Delhi) and two at the Wankhede. India are favourites in the tournament, they are playing very well and are playing at home. They are a very good side."

Meanwhile, Australia, now with a Net Run Rate of +1.142, are also catching up. They remain at the fourth spot, one below New Zealand.

At the post-match presentation, Aussie skipper Cummins said, "Really happy, complete game. To put 400 on board and then defend well, couldn't be happier. Crazy innings. I think we both contributed equally in that hundred partnership (chuckles). Fantastic innings, the cleanest hitting I've seen. We played the style we liked to. Pleased with Smithy getting runs. We were aiming for powerplay wickets, bowled quite well without a lot of luck. Zamps with another four-fer. They (New Zealand) are a really good side.. Big game in Dharamsala. It's the World Cup and we are in a good space, can't wait to get there. (Areas to improve) I don't think we have totally nailed the 50 overs with the bat yet."

'SA are trusting their top five, India are...': Smith lauds in-form teams after Australia thrash Netherlands

Team India will tour the West Indies next month for a bilateral series. Rohit Sharma's men will start the Test series against West Indies from July 12, and the three-Test match series will be followed by three One Day Internationals and five-match T20 series. But it seems like the India tour of the West Indies might get rescheduled. The West Indies team has to join the ICC World Cup 2023 qualifiers from July 9. Due to this, the first India vs West Indies Test is on the verge of being rescheduled.

West Indies’ key players are currently busy with CWC Qualifiers

Indeed, Cricket West Indies has often used separate teams for white-ball and red-ball matches simultaneously, but there is some overlap on this occasion. Both formats are played by key players like Kyle Mayers, Jason Holder, Roston Chase, and Alzarri Joseph, who are currently in Zimbabwe for the ICC World Cup Qualifiers. In fact, all four of these players played a pivotal role in the West Indies' 39-run victory over the United States on June 19.

According to Inside Sport a CWI official has also quoted that The World Cup Qualifier final is meaningless to them. Their Test players will not participate in the game, but first, the team must make sure that they reach the finals.

<h2>Speculation over Indian squad for West Indies</h2>

There have also been several speculations over the Indian squad for the India tour of the West Indies after their defeat in the World Test Championship final. New players are being considered for the T20 series against West Indies and Hardik Pandya may lead the team. It is being speculated that Virat Kohli may be rested for the T20I series, as per Inside Sport. There were rumours earlier that Rohit Sharma would be rested for the series, but it seems unlikely. that India would go in for a captaincy change at the start of the new WTC cycle.

On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Jasprit Bumrah are injured and will not be traveling to the Caribbean. In such a situation, Cheteshwar Pujara and Rahane may surely have a chance in the Test team. The selectors will meet next week to finalise the squad for the tour.&nbsp;

The India vs West Indies Test is set to begin from July 12. But, with West Indies’ key players being busy with the ICC World Cup 2023 Qualifiers, it seems like the fixture might get rescheduled.

West Indies’ key players are currently busy with CWC Qualifiers Indeed, Cricket West Indies has often used separate teams for white-ball and red-ball matches simultaneously, but there is some overlap on this occasion. Speculation over Indian squad for West Indies There have also been several speculations over the Indian squad for the India tour of the West Indies after their defeat in the World Test Championship final. On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Jasprit Bumrah are injured and will not be traveling to the Caribbean. In such a situation, Cheteshwar Pujara and Rahane may surely have a chance in the Test team. The selectors will meet next week to finalise the squad for the tour.

IND vs WI: First Test to be rescheduled due to ICC World Cup 2023 Qualifiers?

India's wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is set to miss the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup as he still is away from full recovery following a horrible car accident in December 2022.

Pant will also be missing the World Test Championship (WTC) final to be played against Australia in England in June and so as Asia Cup. The developments are part of a report by the media outlet Cricbuzz which also says that Pant is still seven to eight months away from being able to start playing cricket again.

On a positive side, the reports also says that the left-handed batsman is recuperating faster than expected and will be able to walk without the crutches in span of a couple of weeks. Nonetheless, a return to cricket in January 2024 would mean an year of absence for Pant who had established himself as India's first choice wicketkeeper in Tests at least.

Given Pant's absence, KL Rahul could be India's designated keeper-batsman in ODIs for the World Cup and Asia Cup while players like Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan could also find themselves in the mix.

Coming back to Pant's case, the southpaw recently made an appearance during his IPL franchise team Delhi Capitals' match against Gujarat Titans but was seen walking with the help of crutches.

The cricketer had met an accident while traveling from Delhi to Dehradun by his car. He was able to come out of the car with the help of passers-by who spotted his wreck of a car which had started burning. Pant was first taken to a local hospital for trauma treatment before being shifted to Max Hospital in Dehradun.

BCCI then decided to fly Pant to a Mumbai hospital to undergo a knee surgery. Pant could need another surgery as per the report. India will definitely be missing Pant's expertise in Tests for sure where he has an envious record. In the 33 matches he has played so far, Pant has scored 2,271 runs at an average of 43.67 with five hundreds and 11 half-centuries.

His most notable innings was of 89 not out with which he led a second-string India side to victory over Australia at their fortress Gabba in the final match of the Border-Gavaskar series in 2021.&nbsp;

Rishabh Pant set to miss 2023 ICC ODI World Cup, claims report

The dark cloud on India’s potential venues in the Asia Cup 2023 can finally be lifted as the Asia Cricket Council (ACC) has proposed to allocate India to a neutral venue. The Board of Control for Cricket in India and Pakistan Board (PCB) are said to be moving swiftly towards brokering a resolution that could have both teams playing their tournament matches against each other outside Pakistan.

The Asia Cup 2023 is scheduled to take place in September and will see both India and Pakistan grouped together. The two arch-rivals are set to meet at least once while there could be potential two more meetings between the sides, including the final. India who last visited the terror-affected nation in 2008 are determined not to visit Pakistan despite them being the host.

<h3>Neutral venue on agenda</h3>

While India won’t be visiting Pakistan, they are likely to play their matches at a neutral venue including the headline clash against the hosts. The proposed neutral venues include Oman, UAE and Sri Lanka. According to an ESPNcricinfo report, England could also serve as an alternative if both BCCI and PCB agree to take the Asia Cup outside Asia.

The Asia Cup 2023 will be played in a 50-over format with the tournament lasting for 13 days. India and Pakistan are grouped together while defending champions Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are paired in the other group.

<h3>Committee to decide Asia Cup schedule</h3>

As it stands, a small working group has been formed with the brief of creating a schedule and travel plan agreeable to all participating countries as well as the broadcaster before a final call is taken. The weather is likely to play a key role in determining the second venue outside of Pakistan, though there will be keenness among the Asian venues to host high-profile India-Pakistan games.

The Asia Cup has recently developed a tradition to get hosted in a neutral venue with UAE being the likely option. Last year Sri Lanka were unable to host the Asia Cup due to political and financial crisis while India also had to relinquish hosting the tournament in 2018 with the political tension between them and Pakistan. This year could be no different as India try to conquer the continental crown while a bigger prize in the form of the ODI World Cup also awaits in October.

Asia Cup 2023: Premier tournament to stay in Pakistan, but India likely to play at THIS neutral venue

Ace Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah was not picked for the final two Tests against Australia and for the ODI series that follows as he remains on the sidelines following the back injury he suffered last year in September. However, as first reported by Cricbuzz, Bumrah is on the road to recovery and is targeting IPL 2023 for his much-awaited return. The fast bowler, who was not named in India’s squad for the first two Tests against Australia earlier as the coach and the captain didn’t want to risk him, is yet to receive clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) where he currently undergoing&nbsp;rehab.

As per the report, Bumrah did play some practice matches in NCA in the past ten days but is yet to receive an all-clear certificate from the top brass so as to be considered for selection.

As 2023&nbsp;happens to be an important year for Indian cricket in terms of ICC tournaments&nbsp;with the 2023 World Test Championship and the Men’s World Cup scheduled for the latter half of the year, Bumrah’s fitness will play a key role in deciding how India will fare in those mega events.

In his absence in last year’s Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup in Australia, India failed to lift those trophies. As a result, as announced by the board earlier, Bumrah’s workload in IPL alongside the workload management of several others, who remain in contention for selection for the World Cup, will be taken care of by the NCA in coordination with their IPL franchises during the upcoming season that begins on March 31st.

Even in the past, there have been several instances where the overseas boards have issued conditional NOCs asking the franchises not to make a bowler bowl more than 24 balls in the nets or not to make him play a certain number of matches on a stretch just to avoid an injury. Other than this, the foreign boards also request the respective franchise to look after the concerned player’s fitness parameters regularly. For Bumrah, and even for other injury-prone players, a similar method could be deployed during IPL 2023.

Meanwhile, Bumrah’s Mumbai Indians will face the old nemesis Royal Challengers Bangalore in their opening match of IPL 2023 on April 2nd.

Mind games have begun ahead of the Border-Gavaskar trophy and it is former Australian players that are preparing the pitch. Adam Gilchrist, one of the finest wicketkeeper batters to have graced the sport in the last 20 years on Tuesday said Australia could outmuscle India in the upcoming series. Gilchrist compared the current squad to the one that won the Test series in India, way back in 2004. "I think they'll do it (win the series). I really do. I think they've got a squad and final XI that will have a lot of similarities to the team we rolled with in 2004," Gilchrist was quoted as saying by Fox sports. "So often teams go to India hoping to unveil some new spinner that's going to come in and adapt and bedazzle in India, it doesn't really happen." Read more: India announce squad for Border-Gavaskar trophy; SKY makes the cut The 51-year-old added that the Australian team needed to swallow its pride when facing India in India. He said a defensive approach was required initially to be successful in Indian conditions. "Attack the stumps right from ball one. Swallow your pride a bit, be defensive to be aggressive...Start with one slip, start with a catching mid-wicket, put fielders out on the boundary to nullify the boundary option, but keep a couple of catchers in place, either at short cover or short mid-wicket - and just be patient." Gilchrist suggested that Australia go with three seamers alongside offspinner Nathon Lyon to achieve desired success in the sub-continental conditions. "What we tried to change with our mentality back then -- and I'd be interested to see if the Australians do it this time -- is don't go searching and just rolling spinners out there. Meanwhile, coach and former Mumbai player Amol Mazumdar doffed his hat in appreciation from the dressing room. Notably, the All-India Senior Selection Committee last Friday announced a 17-member squad for the first two Test matches. Instead of Sarfaraz, his state mate Suryakumar Yadav was picked, based on his pristine touch in the limited overs format, particularly T20Is. BCCI and its selection committee have been criticised in recent times for being far too clandestine in team selections. No press conferences are organised to convey the thought process behind the selection and omissions. India announce squad for Border-Gavaskar trophy; SKY makes the cut in Test cricket

2023 will see the return of the ODI World Cup. The showpiece event will be held after 2019 and India will host the marquee tournament for the first time as the sole hosts. Ahead of the tournament, to be played later this year, former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara has hinted that Asian giants such as India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka won't have it easy and can't be termed favourites given England, Australia and New Zealand have improved a lot while playing spin.

Speaking on a Star Sports show, Sangakkara pointed out that cricket changed the day that overseas nations learnt to tackle spin, something which&nbsp;wasn't the case around ten years back. "I think cricket's changed quite a lot since 2011, in those days I would say that in Asian conditions, it favours the subcontinental players. But over the years I think that England, Australia, and New Zealand have learnt to play spin a lot better than even the subcontinental sides," Sangakkara explained.&nbsp;

He further asserted that the likes of Glenn Maxwell and Jonny Bairstow&nbsp;can counter spin better than some of the subcontinental players. "You see a lot of reverse sweeps, paddle shots and sweeps, all of these new strokes using their feet. I think that has revolutionised the way we look at cricket in the subcontinent. IPL has helped a lot in terms of exposure as well," Sangakkara said on Star Sports.

Further, Sangakkara -- who led Sri Lanka to the 2011 ODI World Cup final and was part of the side's 2014 T20 World Cup triumph -- suggested India's core players should prioritise the 50-over format in this year. "ODI World Cup year, your players have to be the main focus and play a lot of ODI cricket. The rest should be rotated around the squad," Sangakkara added.

India will be eager to end their nine-year-long ICC-title drought with a win in this year's ODI WC. They were in the semi-finals in the last two editions following their historic triumph in 2011 when they co-hosted the tournament with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. 'England, Australia, NZ have...': Sangakkara hints Asian giants India, Pakistan & SL not favourites for ODI WC

After beating Pakistan in a humdinger, at the MCG, Melbourne, India will now face the Netherlands in their second Super 12 clash at the T20 World Cup. This will be the first clash between both sides in the format. In the ODI World Cup, India got the better of the Dutch line-up in both their meetings -- in the 2003 and 2011 editions. Coincidentally, they made it to the final on both the occasions.&nbsp;

India are coming into this game on the back of a stunning four-wicket win over Pakistan in their tournament opener, at the MCG. Playing their arch-rivals at the iconic stadium, on October 23 (Sunday), Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. opted to bowl first and restricted them to 159 for 8.

In reply, India were reeling at 31 for 4 before Virat Kohli's stupendous 82 not out, off 53 balls, and Hardik Pandya's 37-ball 40 brought them&nbsp;back into the contest. With 16 needed off the last over, India triumphed on the final ball to register a famous win. Kohli was the architect of India's win with a match-winning knock that will go down as one of his finest in history.

Netherlands, on the other hand, entered the main draw of the competition after playing the qualifiers. They were up against Bangladesh in their first game and failed to chase 145, being all-out for 135 in 20 overs. After a missed opportunity versus the Bangla Tigers, the Scott Edwards-led side will hope to get inspired from Ireland, who beat England on Wednesday (October 26), and stun the one-time winners.

“Yes, I’m enjoying batting at number five. I can take my time and I can pace my innings according to the situation,” Jadeja said at the post-match media interaction.

“So hopefully whenever I get an opportunity in future I’ll try and do my best, play according to the situation and be in the game for my team.” The 33-year-old missed the last two series against South Africa and the West Indies as he was undergoing rehab for his knee injury.

In his comeback match in the first T20I on Thursday, Jadeja was promoted to No 4 where he scored 3 not out from four balls as India posted 199 for 2 en route to a 62-run win.

Justifying his decision, skipper Rohit has said they “wanted more” from the “vastly-improved batter” Jadeja.

In the second T20I, India lost both Rohit (1) and Ishan Kishan (16) cheaply inside the powerplay, while Sanju Samson (39 from 25 balls) could not convert his start as they were in a tricky position at 128 for 3, needing 56 runs in the last seven overs when Jadeja walked in.

Jadeja looked in full flow and along with the in-form&nbsp;Shreyas Iyer&nbsp;(74 not out) put up an exceptional batting display to seal the chase with 17 balls to spare.

“I am feeling better, I am confident and I am good to go. I am glad that I played a good innings for my team. Hopefully, I will continue in the same in the upcoming games,” he said.

He said the wicket also helped a lot as the ball was coming nicely to the bat.

India coach Rahul Dravid has urged his players to seize the chance to claim a first ever test series win in South Africa, a moment that could be career defining for many in the team as they prepare for the first test in Pretoria on Sunday.

India have enjoyed recent success in Australia and England, but South Africa remains a mighty challenge for the top ranked test side, though they will arguably never have had a better chance against a home team going through a transition period and with far less experience than in the past.

"It is a great challenge and a great opportunity for everyone," Dravid told reporters on Saturday. "It is something you look forward to as a batsman, the chance to play away from home and test yourself against some really good opposition in their home conditions.

"A lot of your career is defined by those sorts of performances, so it is a great opportunity for everyone in the group to put in the performances that are something that they can remember, and people will remember them for."

Dravid played 11 tests in South Africa and averaged under 30, well below his career mark of 52.31, so he is aware of the challenges of adjusting from lower wickets on the sub-continent to the higher bounce of the Highveld.

He said there would be much to consider when selecting a starting XI, and expects those who do not make the cut to be disappointed, something he sees as a positive.

"Most players are professional. Sometimes you have to have difficult conversations. Everyone wants to be part of the playing XI, but they understand situations. As long as you can give them the reasons for it (not being selected).

"Players will be disappointed, but that is one of the things that makes people succeed at this level, you want to be playing, competing and part of the action, not sitting out."

Virat Kohli will captain India in the first test but decisions around the middle-order batting and how many seamers to pick will be the main conundrum for the selectors.

The second test will be in Johannesburg from Jan. 3-7, with the third in Cape Town from Jan. 11-15.

Team India's win in Australia, earlier this year, is regarded as one of their biggest victories overseas. The tour witnessed India's young players stepping up in the absence of several senior players.&nbsp;

Australia’s assistant coach and former India cricketer Sridharan Sriram recalled the series where Paine and Co., despite kicking off the series in style, were outplayed by the young Indian cricketers.&nbsp;

“Shubman Gill played from the Melbourne Test. We knew enough about Gill. Same with Rishabh Pant. He has played in Australia before, got a hundred (159 not out) in Sydney in 2018-19. So, we all knew what Pant was capable of. But Shardul, Washington and Siraj were the standout players,” Sriram was quoted as saying.

“Even in Brisbane, when India were 186/6 in the first innings, Washington and Shardul had that partnership (123) that took India very close to Australian total (Australia 369, India 336). If Australia took a lead of 80 or 100 runs, the second innings would have been easier for us. For India to chase down 328 in the last innings, the first innings partnership for the seventh wicket between Shardul and Washington played a massive part.

“And for Siraj to bowl the way he did in Melbourne, the accuracy he showed, even on a flat pitch in Sydney, to have that discipline and economy, keeping one end tight, we did not expect that from a player who was playing in his first Test,” he added.

As concerns over pollution in the national capital continues to grow, Bangladesh`s players were seen training wearing marks at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Friday.

Bangladesh and India are all set to play the first T20I of the three-match series here in Delhi on Sunday, November 3.

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/feeling-breathless-delhi-ncr-residents-complain-as-air-quality-turns-hazardous-259171">air quality in Delhi </a>continues to deteriorate and it has slipped into the `severe` category in several places across the city.

This has led many to urge the BCCI to shift the match from Delhi.

When ANI contacted the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), a source replied: "It is up to the players, if they want to use the mask they can, it is their choice".

On Thursday, Bangladesh's batsman Liton Das was seen training with a mask on, while others like Mushfiqur Rahim and Mustafizur Rahman were seen without masks.

But on Friday, the situation seems to have changed as many Bangladesh players opted to train with masks.

However, when Liton Das was asked why he chose to wear a mask during training, the batsman replied: "I had some personal problem that`s why I was wearing it. I was not feeling well".

India's stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma also downplayed pollution concerns in Delhi on Thursday.

"I have just landed and didn`t get the time to see/assess what it`s like in Delhi. The information I have is that the match is scheduled for November 3 and it will happen on the same day," he had said.

Earlier, the<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/sourav-ganguly-takes-charge-as-president-of-board-for-control-of-cricket-in-india-257654"> BCCI President</a> Sourav Ganguly confirmed the match will go on as planned in the national capital.

"We have spoken to Delhi authorities in the last two days. They are expecting the match to go through but it was already scheduled so we could not cancel it at the last minute. We came in on October 28 and it was too late to do anything because a lot of preparations go in matches; tickets, crowd, and everything. So it is not possible to cancel things in the last minute," Ganguly had said.
