Uthappa added, "When Sanju Samson plays for the Rajasthan Royals, there also he can play half the season at the top order and the remaining half at No. 6. so that he can build familiarity. When he plays for India, it's not a given that he would get the No. 3 spot. Suryakumar Yadav might take the spot or Virat Kohli might play at No. 3. So he needs to be prepared for both positions."

Samson will like to come up with significant contributions in the remaining four T20Is and help Hardik &amp; Co. win the series. He scored an impressive 41-ball 51 in the third and final ODI and, hence, has form on his side to turn the tides in the upcoming games.&nbsp;

Many people think that India’s only job in international cricket is to win World Cup. The main reason why we consider ourselves favourites to win the World Cup is because of the IPL. ODI matches are very stressful. It will take at least two days for your body to recover. The first two matches in West Indies were played in a gap of 24 hours. Thus, there are more chances of you getting injured. Already we have so many players recovering at the NCA. Bumrah is back after a long hiatus. Prasidh Krishna is back too. So, we have so many injury problems. It seems like people are finding points to blame Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma just for the sake of it."

The 36-year-old Test specialist added,&nbsp;"They are trying different players now because they know what they went through during the last T20 World Cup. We didn’t have Ravindra Jadeja and Bumrah, and we didn’t have many fast bowlers. That’s why we are trying different options before the ODI World Cup."

Kohli became only the tenth player to enter the 500-match club when India were asked to bat first in the series finale, being held in the Caribbean island.

Among Indians, Kohli became only the fourth player to reach the coveted club. Sachin Tendulkar leads the overall list (664) whereas MS Dhoni (538) and current head coach Rahul Dravid (509) occupy the second and third spot, respectively, in the list featuring Indians.&nbsp;On Thursday, Kohli attained the fourth position in his landmark appearance.

Debuting in 2008, Kohli soon became India's go-to-batter across formats and has amassed over 25,000 international runs along with 75 tons. On Day One of the second Test, Kohli came out to bat at 153 for 2 and saw his side lose two quick wickets before&nbsp;the tea break. However, he remained undeterred, looked focused and in complete control, ran hard between wickets to take India to 288 for 4 at stumps, being unbeaten on 87 along with Ravindra Jadeja (34*).&nbsp;

During the 72nd over, Kohli-Jadeja ran hard to add two more runs to the scoreboard. While completing the second run, Kohli realised he was in danger&nbsp;and, thus, dived to save himself. His efforts bore fruits as he survived and his commitment was hailed by former cricketer-turned-commentator Ian Bishop.

You sometimes see guys doing this in desperation in a one-day or white-ball scenario, but here is a guy who has been around for 500 international games and in a Test match, knows the value of every run. Putting his body on the line and diving to make sure he's in. That tells you how badly he wants whatever he gets out of this innings."

It is to be noted that play was halted for a brief period&nbsp;for Kohli, who was attended&nbsp;by the team physio after his desperate dive. After preventing a&nbsp;run-out, the 34-year-old&nbsp;signalled for the physio instantly. The former Indian captain's jersey was in a mess and he also did some&nbsp;damage to his already-taped finger. However, Kohli put his body on the line for the team's cause.

Having won the series opener by an innings and 141 runs, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. will aim for a series whitewash to also add vital points in their kitty in the 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Ahead of the second Test's commencement, Hitman hinted that India won't tinker too much with their playing XI after having won the first Test, in Dominica, without dropping much sweat.&nbsp;

Rohit also spoke at length about Ishan Kishan, who made his Test debut in&nbsp;the series opener. He was unbeaten on 1 in India's first innings&nbsp;but was impressive behind the stumps. Rohit revealed that Ishan has been given full freedom to play in his attacking manner even in the purest format of the game.&nbsp;

Rohit also opined on Ishan's wicketkeeping skills. He stated, "I would like to speak specifically about his wicket-keeping. He kept really, really well considering he played his first Test and to keep against Ashwin and Jadeja where the ball is turning and bouncing and some balls keeping low as well... I was very impressed with his keeping skills. Unfortunately, he got to score just one run as we had to declare. We want our top-order batters bat long. If the opportunity comes (to bat long), he (Ishan) is raring to go."

With India entering a transition phase, given the likes of Rohit, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, R Ashwin, etc. being in the last phase of their careers, the national side is focused on backing their young stars. While Dhoni enjoyed good success as a white-ball captain, India were miserable during their away tours of England (in 2011/12 and 2014), Australia (in 2011/12) and South Africa&nbsp;and New Zealand (in&nbsp;2013/14) under the former Indian wicketkeeper.&nbsp;

However, Dhoni retained the Test captaincy until he retired from the format in late 2014 during the Australia tour. From thereon, Virat Kohli took over and led India to the No. 1 ranking (with the team faring well in away tours as well).

“As a team, we realise how valuable R Ashwin is. In my opinion, he is one of the greatest match-winners for India. There have been very few match-winners like him. The number of matches he has helped us win what can I say,” Mhambrey said in the post-match after India beat the hosts.

India were at their fluent best contest as they asserted their dominance in the first World Test Championship (WTC) match. Ashwin’s brilliance turned out to be the difference-maker having bagged 60/5 in the first innings and followed that with 71/7 in the second innings. He now has 486 wickets in the red-ball format and is closing in on the 500-wicket mark.

“When we came here on Day 1, it was a bit dry, and when we checked the stats of the local games we found out that spinners dominated in those games. We felt as the game progresses it will be difficult for batting and the other thing is how we use the wicket,” Mhambrey added.

India continued from 312/2 at the start of Day 3 and added another 109 runs before deciding to declare the innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 171 runs in his debut innings before he was scalped by Alzarri Joseph while Virat Kohli missed out on a hundred and was dismissed on 76. India would then turn the screw in the second innings of West Indies and win the contest by an innings. Despite being at his best, it was Jaiswal who was adjourned Player of the Match in the contest.

The second Test between India and West Indies will take start on Thursday, July 20 in Trinidad.

Former Australia captain Ricky Poting has backed Mumbai star Prithvi Shaw to make an international return despite the recent poor form. Ponting on Friday spoke while praising Shaw’s fellow Mumbai teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal after he scored a hundred on his Test debut. According, to the former Aussie skipper, the 23-year-old has all the talent in the world to succeed and make a comeback to the side despite having a turbulent last few months.

<h2>Can Shaw come back?</h2>

“If I wind the clock back a couple of years, I'd put Prithvi Shaw into that category as well. I still think he's capable of getting back to that sort of, you know, if he wants to do it enough, I'm sure he can get back up there because talent-wise there's no doubt in the talent he's got,” said Ponting.

Shaw was in the Indian team during the home series against New Zealand in January for the T20Is while he scored a triple hundred in the Ranji Trophy. However, a poor Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign saw his stocks drop significantly in recent months. He did not have a big role to play in the Delhi Capitals team where Ponting is part of the coaching staff.

48-year-old Ponting was also full of praise for India’s new Test player Jaiswal after he scored a ton on his Test debut. Jaiswal scored an unbeaten 143 at the stumps on Day 2 and will look to capitalise on the good start.

“I mean Jaiswal’s IPL was something special. He almost just flicked a switch and turned into a superstar overnight. Everyone knew that he was a talented youngster, but what I saw in this year's IPL, he's got all sorts of talent,” Ponting said on Jaiswal.

In IPL 2023, he was a regular for the Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals (RR) and ended the season with 625 runs -- fifth-most -- at an average of 48.08, including a best of 124 (one hundred, five fifties). Over the years, he has improved a lot while grinding it out&nbsp;in the domestic circuit. After playing 15 first-class games, the swashbuckling left-hander averages a solid 80.21 with 1,845 runs under his name.

Going to stumps on Day 1 at 40 not out, Jaiswal will be desperate to cross the 50-run mark and go for a daddy hundred against the Windies bowling line-up. He will aim for a big score to open his account in Test cricket and take India to a winning position in the two-match Test series opener.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan made their Test debuts on Day 1 of India's first Test versus West Indies in Dominica on Wednesday (July 12). While Kishan accounted for two dismissals behind the stumps, Jaiswal made a promising start with the bat, being unbeaten on 40 when India went to stumps at 80 for no loss in response to West Indies' paltry 150.
