Anil Kumble leads wishes as Ajaz Patel becomes 3rd bowler in Test history to take all 10 wickets in an innings

New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel has scripted history by becoming the third bowler in the world to pick up all ten wickets in a Test innings. Patel achieved the historic feat in India's first innings of the ongoing second Test between the hosts and the Kiwis at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Patel accounted for all ten wickets in India's innings to join the likes of England's Jim Laker and India's Anil Kumble, who are the only other two bowlers to have taken all ten wickets in a Test innings.

Patel had drawn the first blood for New Zealand after a delayed start on Day 1 of the Mumbai Test when he dismissed Indian opener Shubman Gill on 44. The left-arm spinner then sent back Cheteshwar Pujara (0) and Virat Kohli (0) in quick succession while ensuring the duo failed to even open their account in the game. He then got rid of Shreyas Iyer on 18 as India posted 221/4 at stumps on Day 1.

Patel continued his magical spell on Day 2 of the Mumbai Test on Saturday and ran through the Indian batting line-up, picking up the remaining six wickets. He accounted for the dismissals of Mayank Agarwal, Wriddhiman Saha, R Ashwin, Axar Patel, Jayant Yadav and Mohammed Siraj to complete a historic ten-wicket haul and etch his name in history.

India legend Kumble was the last bowler to pick up all ten wickets in a Test innings. He had achieved the feat during a Test match against Pakistan in Delhi in 1999. Patel bowled 47.5 overs and conceded 119 runs to pick up all ten wickets in India's first innings.

Ajaz Patel outshines Mayank Agarwal

While Patel single-handedly picked up all ten wickets against India, Mayank Agarwal played a brilliant knock to help the hosts post a strong total of 325 runs on the board in their first innings. Mayank notched up 150 runs laced with 17 fours and 4 sixes and combined with the likes of Gill (44), Iyer (18) and Saha (27) to post crucial stands for Team India.

With the help of his heroic knock, the hosts managed to resist the pressure despite losing wickets in quick succession on Day 1. However, Mayank's efforts were outshone by Patel's historic ten-wicket haul. New Zealand would now be hoping to overhaul India's total of 325 runs in their first innings.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli had a disappointing outing on his return to international cricket on Friday (December 03) as he was dismissed on a duck in the ongoing second Test against New Zealand. Kohli, who had skipped the T20I series and was also rested for the first Test against New Zealand, could not open his account on his return for the Indian team.

Kohli was dismissed on a duck after playing four deliveries in India's first innings of the second Test at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The dismissal took place in the 30th over when spinner Ajaz Patel trapped the Indian skipper LBW and went for a big shout. The on-field umpire declared Kohli out but the Indian captain was quick to go for a review.

Controversy erupted after the replays showed that the ball had clearly touched the bat and the pad at the same time. Due to no conclusive evidence, the on-field umpire's decision was upheld by the third umpire, who deemed Kohli out after the DRS. Kohli had a brief chat with the umpire before walking back as he looked upset over failing to open his dismissal.

His 105-run knock helped India post 345 runs on the board in the first innings before New Zealand replied with 296 runs in their first innings. Iyer then scored a gritty 65 in the second innings to combine with Wriddhiman Saha (61) to bail India out of trouble and post 234 runs on the board.

New Zealand were handed a target of 284 runs in their final innings with nine wickets left heading into the final day. Opener Tom Lathan (52) and nightwatchman William Somerville (36) batted out the entire first session to keep the visitors in the game before the Indian bowlers got the hosts back into the contest with three wickets in the second session and five wickets in the final session.

However, due to bad light, the game had to be called eleven minutes early as Patel and Ravindra stood tall to deny India the tenth wicket. India were forced to settle for a draw which meant they managed to take only four out of the available twelve points from the Kanpur Test.

India are currently at the second spot on the WTC points table with 30 points from five matches. The teams are noe ranked on the basis of the percentage of points. While the winning teams get 12 points (100%), each team gets 6 points (50%) for a tie and 4 points (33.33%) for a draw. The teams are also penalised for slow over-rate.

Updated World Test Championship points table after India's draw against New Zealand in 1st Test

New Zealand pulled off a thrilling draw against India in the first Test in Kanpur on Tuesday (September 29) after tail-ender Azaj Patel and debutant Rachin Ravindra showcased remarkable resistance to deny India the final wicket towards the end of the final session on Day 5 of the series-opener on Monday.

Chasing the target of 284 runs, New Zealand resumed their second innings on Monday with opener Tom Latham (52) and nightwatchman William Somerville combining to add 76 runs for the second wicket. The duo displayed remarkable grittiness to hand the first session to New Zealand on the final day before Umesh Yadav dismissed Somerville.

New Zealand then lost three wickets in the post-lunch session before losing another five in the final session. However, the Indian bowlers could only manage to get eight wickets on the final day of the Test match as Patel (2) and Ravindra (18) played out 114 balls between them to deny India victory and help New Zealand draw the game.

Questions were raised over India's timing of declaring their second innings late on Day 4 while Axar Patel and Wriddhiman Saha's pace of scoring runs during their unbeaten stand of 67 runs for the seventh wicket on Day 4 also became a talking point. However, Rahane defended India's timing of declaration and said the hosts couldn't have done anything differently to win the game.

"Not really (declared earlier?), we tried our best. They played really well. I think the way we came back in the second session was good. The fast bowlers too bowled really well," Rahane said when asked about the timing of declaration on Day 4.

"We wanted to get that partnership going, put some runs on board. Saha and Axar batted really well. Before that Shreyas and Ashwin's partnership was crucial. We wanted to bowl four overs yesterday and 90-95 in all.

"I don't think we could have done anything differently," he added.

The second Test between the two sides is all set to get underway from December 03 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Regular skipper Virat Kohli will be making his comeback in the second Test and will be leading the side.

Ajinkya Rahane defends timing of declaration as New Zealand pull off thrilling draw in 1st Test

The New Zealand bowlers ran through the Indian top-order during the first session of Day 4 of the ongoing first Test between the two sides in Kanpur on Sunday. Resuming their second innings from 1/14 on the penultimate day of the Test match, the hosts were blown away under pressure as Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson combined to wreak havoc with the ball.

Both Cheteshwar Pujara and stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane failed to deliver as their struggles continued in the Kanpur Test. The duo was sent back cheaply when India needed them the most under pressure. Pujara was the first Indian batter to be dismissed on Day 4 as he was removed by Jamieson on 22 off 33 balls. The experienced right-hander equalled an unwanted record after another failure in the whites.

Pujara equalled former India captain Ajit Wadekar, who had gone 39 matches without scoring a hundred while batting at no.3 for India in Tests. Pujara has now gone 39 matches without a century for Team India in the longest format and will be hopeful of breaking the unwanted streak in the next game. Earlier, Pujara had played 38 innings without scoring a hundred between 2013 to 2016.

Ajinkya Rahane fails again

A number of former cricketers and experts have raised concerns over Rahane's recent struggles with the bat and questioned his spot in the Test team. Rahane, who is leading the side in the absence of regular skipper Kohli, was dismissed after scoring only 4 runs in India's second innings on Sunday.

Coming out to bat at no.4, Rahane opened his account with a boundary before being dismissed on the next ball by spinner Ajaz Patel. He had scored 35 runs in the first innings of the ongoing Kanpur Test. With Kohli returning to lead the side for the second Test, it remains to be seen if Rahane will be able to keep his spot in the second Test.

Pujara equals unwanted record, Rahane fails again as India struggle in Kanpur Test against New Zealand

Debutant Shreyas Iyer showed his ice-cool temperament under pressure to stand tall with a fine half-century which placed India in a commanding position as they set up a stiff victory target of 284 for New Zealand on the fourth day of the opening Test here on Sunday.

India declared at 234 for 7 for an overall lead of 283 and gave the Black Caps four tricky overs to face under fading light during which they managed four runs and lost opener Will Young to Ravichandran Ashwin.

With that scalp, Ashwin became the joint third-highest wicket-taker in Indian cricket with Harbhajan Singh (417 wickets). The highest ever fourth-innings chase by a visiting team in India is 276 by Viv Richards' West Indies against the Dilip Vengsarkar-led India in 1987 at the Feroz Shah Kotla, which placed statistics on the home team's side.

The honours for India on the day were shared by Iyer (65 off 125 balls), who became the first Indian to score a hundred and fifty on debut and the plucky Wriddhiman Saha (61 not out, 126 balls), who battled stiff neck to make an invaluable contribution which will certainly count a lot in the final context of the match.

Axar Patel (28 not out) then conjured another 67-run eighth-wicket stand with Saha to slowly take the match out of the Black Caps' grasp. If New Zealand are still in the match, credit must go to their tireless seam bowling duo of Tim Southee (22-2-75-3) and Kyle Jamieson (17-6-40-3), who showed an exhibition of top-class bowling on an unresponsive track.

However, it will now depend on how much time it takes for India's spin troika to roll over New Zealand, whose openers showed a lot of gumption on the second afternoon and third morning. Also if skipper Williamson can do something mind-blowing with the willow, there might just be a great contest on the cards.

If the morning belonged to New Zealand's bowlers, who decided to prolong Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane's bad patch, the afternoon was Iyer's time under the sun while Saha did his bit, reaching his sixth half-century in the final session of the day.

This is certainly an innings which will give Saha's Test career a new lease of life. This was after stand-in captain Rahane and his temporary deputy Pujara's saga of failures continued leaving India tottering at 51 for 5 in the first 75 minutes of the morning session.

But credit to Iyer, who once again displayed steely temperament on the way to his second 50-plus score in the match, hitting eight fours and a huge six over long off against Will Sommerville. His best shot, however, was an inside out lofted drive off left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel. It was a difficult shot that was perfectly executed.

It was followed by a square cut in the same over as Williamson erred by bowling his spinners for way too long. That was proved when Southee removed Iyer at the stroke of tea when he tried to pull one that was drifting down leg side.
Credit should also be given to Saha as he batted with an open-chested stance compared to his usual side-on which reduces the pronounced neck movement.

He played his customary game of dabs and flicks and also produced an occasional slog pull for six as his innings had four fours and a six. However, on the fourth morning, Southee, a practitioner of conventional swing bowling, took a master-class on how to bowl on an unresponsive Indian track, classically setting up the batters.

But before Southee got into the act, Kyle Jamieson (13-6-26-3) targeted Pujara's (22 off 33 balls) ribcage, getting one to rear up on this dead track and it brushed the India No. 3's gloves into the hands of keeper Tom Blundell.
Rahane (4 off 15 balls) is out of form and the world knows about that.

However, Ajaz Patel (17-3-60-1), who has looked way below Test class, then produced his best delivery of the match. An arm ball that was fired in with the angle caught Rahane plumb in-front while he tried to play a forward defensive prod.

Mayank Agarwal (17) did all the hardwork in the first hour but Southee (15.2-3-48-3) set him up with deliveries that came into him from good length spot as he played with a closed bat-face.

Then he pitched on the same spot and, to Agarwal's horror, it shaped slightly away and he had committed to a closed bat-face. The result was a regulation catch to Tom Latham in the second slip. For Ravindra Jadeja (0), Southee used the width of the crease with an angular delivery that wrapped him on the pads.

India vs New Zealand: Debutant Shreyas Iyer, gritty Wriddhiman Saha set up an intriguing final day

India batter Shreyas Iyer continued his purple patch on his Test debut against New Zealand on Day 4 of the ongoing series-opener between the two sides in Kanpur on Sunday. Iyer scripted history with the bat as he became the first Indian to score a century and a half-century in his debut Test match.

The right-hander came out to bat at no.5 when India were reeling at 45/3 having lost both Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane in quick succession before Mayank Agarwal was sent packing quickly as well. Iyer survived an early scare as a thick edge against Tim Southee saw the ball landing in no man's land.

Iyer went on to make the most of the opportunity and slammed a brilliant half-century under pressure to bail India out of trouble and help them stage a comeback in the game.

Iyer, who had scored a magnificent 105 in India's first innings of the Test match, notched up 65 runs in their second innings on Sunday. He combined with R Ashwin (32) to post a 52-run stand for the sixth wicket before stitching a 64-run stand for the sixth wicket with Wriddhiman Saha.

With his maiden half-century in Tests, Iyer scripted a massive feat as he became the first Indian with a ton and a fifty on Test debut. He became the tenth batter overall in the world to achieve the stellar feat. He also joined the legendary Sunil Gavaskar in an elite list by becoming the third Indian with two fifty-plus scores on Test debut.

Gavaskar had notched up 65 and 67 on his Test debut against West Indies in 1971 while Dilawar Hussain was the first Indian to achieve the feat when he scored 59 and 57 respectively in the two innings of his debut Test against England in 1933-34.

Incidentally, Iyer had received his maiden Test cap from batting legend Gavaskar himself before the start of the Test match on Thursday and did well to join an elite list featuring him with his ton and half-century on debut. Iyer's 65-run-knock helped India stretch their lead past the 200-run mark and get into a comfortable position against the visitors after a top-order collapse.

Saha and Axar Patel are currently out in the middle for India as the hosts look to take their lead close to 300 runs before inviting New Zealand to bat in their second innings of the game.

Shreyas Iyer scripts history, becomes 1st Indian to slam ton & half-century on Test debut

Axar Patel wreaked havoc on New Zealand batting line-up on Day 3 of the ongoing first Test between India and the Kiwis in Kanpur on Saturday. Axar picked up a five-wicket haul as India bundled out the Kiwis for 296 runs in their first innings to gain a crucial lead of 49 runs ahead of their second innings.

It was a brilliant spell from Axar, who spun a web around the New Zealand batting line-up and continuously troubled the Kiwi batters. Axar finished with brilliant figures of 5/62 in his 4 overs and was the pick of the bowlers for Team India in the series-opener at Kanpur.

Former India cricketer Wasi Jaffer, who is known for his witty tweets and hilarious memes on Twitter, took a dig at Axar and pointed out his 'only mistake' in the Test match after his sensational spell. Jaffer, who is known for entertaining cricket fans on Twitter with his funny side, posted a picture of the match ball which was gifted to Axar after his five-wicket haul and said the only mistake the left-arm spinner made was putting the wrong date on the ball.

"The only mistake Axar Patel made today was putting wrong date on the match ball. 27th November hai bapu @akshar2026 #INDvNZ," Jaffer wrote in a tweet.

Axar was quick to respond to Jaffer's tweet and clarified that it was not him but his Indian teammate Suryakumar Yadav, who had put the wrong date on the match ball. Suryakumar also joined the banter on Twitter and reacted hilariously to Jaffer's idea of punishment for his mistake. Wasim Jaffer takes a dig at Axar Patel over his 'only mistake' in 1st Test, Suryakumar Yadav responds

Left-arm spinner Axar Patel claimed figures of 5-62 to help India grab a handy 49-run first-innings lead in the opening test against New Zealand on Saturday. The home side suffered a setback, however, with Shubman Gill`s late dismissal as they finished day three on 14-1 at Kanpur`s Green Park Stadium.

Kyle Jamieson bowled Gill for one and troubled Cheteshwar Pujara who remained unbeaten on nine.
Opener Mayank Agarwal was on four not out with India 63 ahead in the first match of the two-test series.

"This is the kind of pitch where you can`t expect wickets all the time," Patel said after registering his fifth five-wicket haul in seven innings.

"You have to be consistent with your line and length. The odd ball turned and occasionally it kept low. I think the wicket will slow down further."

Earlier, after inducing several edges that fell agonisingly short of fielders, Ravichandran Ashwin ended India`s 66-over wait for a first wicket by ending a 151-run opening stand between Tom Latham and Will Young.

Young, having made a career-best 89, edged Ashwin and substitute wicketkeeper KS Bharat - replacing Wriddhiman Saha who was being treated for a stiff neck - grabbed a low catch.

Young was initially ruled not out, but India reviewed that decision, which had to be overturned after replays confirmed the edge.

Replying to India`s first-innings total of 345, New Zealand were cruising at 197-1 in the morning session with Latham approaching his hundred and skipper Kane Williamson in the middle.

Soon after India took the second new ball, however, seamer Umesh Yadav trapped Williamson lbw on the stroke of lunch.

Williamson, who made 18, reviewed the decision, but replays confirmed the ball would have hit the top of his middle stump. Patel ran through the New Zealand middle order removing Ross Taylor and Henry Nicholls and denying Latham his century.

Latham made 95 before stepping out against Patel, only to be stumped after a fine knock that included 10 fours.
Ravindra Jadeja dismissed debutant Rachin Ravindra and Ashwin (3-82) claimed the last two wickets as New Zealand were bowled out for 296.

Axar Patel's five-wicket haul gives India handy lead over New Zealand on Day 3 of 1st Test

Senior Indian spinner R Ashwin was involved in a heated on-field exchange with umpire Nitin Menon during Day 3 of the ongoing first Test between India and New Zealand on Saturday. Ashwin drew the first blood for India on Day 3 as he got rid of Will Young on 89 to give India a much-needed first breakthrough in the game.

However, Ashwin's argument with umpire Menon grabbed the limelight later in the day. The on-field umpire had issues with Ashwin's follow-through while bowling as the spinner was running across the line of sight for the umpire and blocking his view.

Menon was seen having a chat with Ashwin after the spinner continued to bowl with the same follow through despite Menon expressing his objection. The spinner later made some corrections but the umpire was still not satisfied and even took up the matter with captain Ajinkya Rahane. The trio was seen having a discussion in the middle of the pitch as Ashwin looked animated.

The discussions between Ashwin, Rahane and umpire Menon went on for the next few overs before Ashwin relented and corrected his follow-through. The video of his argument with Menon went viral on social media.

Axar also picked up the wicket of opener Tom Latham (95), who missed out on his hundred by just five runs. New Zealand are currently trailing India by 104 runs and will be hoping to close the gap as much as they can on India's total of 345 runs.

IND vs NZ, 1st Test: Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja's 113-run stand takes hosts to 258/4 at stumps on Day 1

Former India batter Ajay Jadeja has slammed the selectors for ignoring Hanuma Vihari in India's Test squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand. The focus will shift to the longest format now after hosts India registered a 3-0 clean sweep in the just-concluded T20I series against the Kiwis.

Skipper Virat Kohli has been rested from the first Test of the two-match series and will return to lead the team in the second Test. In his absence, vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane will lead India in the series-opener in Kanpur that gets underway from Thursday (November 25).

The biggest talking point from India's Test squad selection was Vihari's snub. Many were left surprised as the batter was dropped from the squad with Shreyas Iyer making the cut in the squad. While Vihari has been a regular in the whites for a while now, Iyer is yet to make his Test debut for India.

Vihari was, instead included in the India A squad for their tour of South Africa. Surprisingly, Vihari, who made his Test debut in September 2018, is yet to play a Test match in India. He was last seen in action during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 where he combined with R Ashwin to save the third Test for India with a memorable partnership despite being injured.

Jadeja believes Vihari has done no wrong to miss out on a spot in the Test team and that the selectors are playing with players' minds by sending an established Test cricketer to be part of an India A tour without a reason.

"Vihari, poor guy. He did well. He has been with Indian cricket for a while, done well. What has he done wrong? Why should he go to India A tour, why can't he play a Test match at home? Or don't send him on A tour also. Somebody who has been with the team, now goes to India A tour and a new guy comes in. That's messing with people's minds," Jadeja said on Cricbuzz.

Vihari was not part of the England Test series at home earlier this year but was recalled in the squad for the tour of England where he was left to warm the bench and didn't get to play a single game.

'That's messing with people's mind': Ajay Jadeja slams selectors over Hanuma Vihari's snub from Test team

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir feels Ajinkya Rahane is quite fortunate to still be part of the Indian Test team ahead of the start of the home series against New Zealand. India registered a 3-0 clean sweep against the Kiwis in the just-concluded three-match T20I series on Sunday and the focus will now shift towards Tests.

Gambhir argued that Rahane, who has not been in great form of late, has managed to retain his spot in the Test squad only because he will be leading the team in the first Test against New Zealand. With skipper Virat Kohli skipping the series-opener, vice-captain Rahane will be in charge of the team.

Senior opener Rohit Sharma, who has taken over as T20I captain of Team India and led the side to a 3-0 clean sweep against the Black Caps, will also miss the Test series and take a break. Rohit was in line to captain the team in the longest format as well in Kohli's absence but will miss the two-match series that gets underway from Thursday.

Gambhir recently picked India's batting line-up for the first Test against New Zealand and said he will open with KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. He picked Shubman Gill to bat at no.4 with Rahane in the middle-order. Gambhir said the New Zealand series will be a chance for Rahane to cement his spot in the side.

"I am going to open with Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul because he opened in England and then probably Shubman Gill will bat at No. 4," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

"That's what I would want to see and plus Rahane is pretty fortunate that he's still part of this side because he's leading... But again he's got another opportunity now, hopefully, he can make that count," he added.

Team India have already sealed the ongoing three-match T20I series against New Zealand with back-to-back wins in the first two matches and will be hoping to register a clean sweep against the Kiwis when they lock horns in the third and final T20I in Kolkata on Sunday (November 21).

India will be keen to test their bench strength in the dead-rubber as captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid are off to a winning start in their first major assignment. After a close 4-wicket win in the series-opener, India defeated New Zealand comprehensively by seven wickets in the second encounter to take an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Debutant Harshal Patel shone in the death overs and bowled an excellent spell conceding only 25 runs while picking up two wickets of his overs. While R Ashwin continued his impeccable run with the ball and delivered yet another stunning spell of 1/19 in his four overs. The duo helped India restrict New Zealand on 153 in 20 overs.

Openers KL Rahul and Rohit went all guns blazing in the run chase as the duo slammed half-centuries apiece to put on a 117-run stand for the first wicket and set up a comfortable win for India. While Rahul notched up a classy 65 off 49 balls, Rohit scored a quickfire 55 off 36 balls to help India get over the line with 16 balls to spare.

India will be hoping to produce a repeat of their performance from the second T20I in the dead-rubber at the Eden Gardens on Sunday as they aim to make it three wins in a row against the T20 World Cup 2021 finalists. But the hosts will be tempted to give chances to new faces having already sealed the series.

The likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Avesh Khan might get a chance to showcase their skills and talent in the final encounter. Rahul might have to sit out if Gaikwad opens the batting while Avesh might come in for Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

INDvsNZ, 3rd T20I: Rohit Sharma and Axar Patel help India thrash New Zealand by 73 runs, whitewash series

India will be looking to register a 3-0 clean sweep against New Zealand when they take on the visitors in the third and final T20I of the ongoing three-match series at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday (November 21). With back to back wins in the first two matches, India have already sealed the series.

The dead-rubber on Sunday can prove to be a great opportunity for the hosts to test their bench strength. With the likes of fast bowler Avesh Khan and young opener Ruturaj Gaikwad waiting in the wings, India might give a chance to the youngsters to showcase their talent against a world-class opponent.

Both Gaikwad and Avesh have been rewarded for their stellar campaigns in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 as the CSK opener bagged the Orange Cap this season for being the highest run-getter in the league while Avesh was the leading wicket-taker for his side Delhi Capitals.

KL Rahul might take a rest from the dead-rubber to make way for Gaikwad at the top while Avesh might come in place of senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan can also replace Rishabh Pant, who has played the first two matches.

Yuzvendra Chahal has a chance of replacing R Ashwin, who was part of India's T20 World Cup 2021 squad and has played both matches in the ongoing series. India have enough bench strength to make a number of changes in their playing XI for the final T20I but it remains to be seen how skipper Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid go about their business.

It might be a dead rubber but India will be hoping to register a complete clean sweep against the finals of the recently-concluded T20 World Cup and make a statement to start the Rohit-Dravid era in Indian cricket. The third T20I will be played in front of a sold-out crowd at the Eden Gardens on Sunday.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, Avesh Khan in? India's predicted playing XI for third T20I against New Zealand

New Zealand pacer Mitchell McClenaghan has labelled the ongoing T20I series between hosts India and New Zealand 'meaningless'. McClenaghan made the remark while responding to a taunt from a fan, who reminded him that the T20 World Cup 2021 finalists have lost the series against India after back-to-back defeats in the first two matches.

India won a close encounter by four wickets to get off to a winning start in the series before clinching the second T20I comprehensively by seven wickets on Friday to make it two wins in a row. India have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead and have sealed the three-match series with the third and final T20I being a dead rubber.

McClenaghan, who is quite active on social media and keeps engaging with fans on the micro-blogging site, seemed quite upset when a fan taunted him over New Zealand's series loss. "New Zealand lose series," a fan wrote in a tweet. Responding to him, McClenaghan said it is a meaningless series taking place 72 hours after a T20 World Cup final with the hosts getting more rest.

“Did they? You mean in meaningless series 72 hours after a WC final defeat with 3 games in 5 days playing a team with 10 days rest in their home conditions?” McClenaghan told the fan.

New Zealand had qualified for the final of the recently-concluded T20 World Cup 2021. However, they lost the summit clash against eventual champions Australia, who went on to lift their maiden T20 World Cup title after earning a dominating 8-wicket win in the final.

New Zealand's lost only one game in the Super 12 stage against Pakistan and won the rest of their four matches to qualify as the second-ranked team from Group 2. They defeated favourites England in the first semi-final to become the first finalists of the tournament but couldn't lift the coveted trophy.

Speaking ahead of the game, Guptill said: "We got to knockout stage in the T20 World Cup, so that was good. The other night we were just a little short of where we wanted to be with the bat. It`s all about contributing to the team and doing whatever I can to get us to win. I contributed a bit with the bat in the T20 World Cup and took it very deep against Scotland. I just want to go out tonight and do the same things that I have been doing. There is no guarantee in T20 cricket."

Coming to the match, India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl against New Zealand.

India will be looking to continue their winning run when they take on New Zealand in the second T20I of the ongoing three-match series. The second T20I will be played in former India captain MS Dhoni's hometown Ranchi on Friday (November 19). Kiwi batter Martin Guptill will be aiming to break Virat Kohli's elusive record when the two teams lock horns in the penultimate encounter.

Kohli, who is not part of the ongoing T20I series between the two sides, might see his record of most runs in T20Is get broken by Guptill on Friday. Guptill is currently the second-highest run-getter in T20Is and is just 11 runs short of breaking Kohli's record to become the highest run-getter in the shortest format.

While Kohli had 3227 runs in 95 T20Is, Guptill is following him closely with 3217 runs in 110 matches and will be looking to go past the Indian ODI and Test skipper in Ranchi on Friday. Kohli has 29 fifties to his name in T20Is while Guptill has 19 fifties and two hundreds under his belt.

India's current T20I skipper Rohit Sharma is at the third spot on the list of top run-getters in T20Is with 3086 runs in 117 matches. Rohit also has a chance of surpassing Kohli if he can fire all cylinders in the remaining two matches for India in the ongoing series against the Kiwis.

In the opener, skipper Rohit looked in fine form as he scored 48 off 36 balls laced with five fours and two sixes to help India win the game by five wickets. Suryakumar Yadav was the star performer with the bat for the hosts as he came out to bat at no.3 and slammed a brilliant 62 off 40 deliveries with the help of three sixes and six fours.

India are unlikely to make a change in their playing XI, but skipper Rohit and the team management might look at giving some game time to senior spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and explosive young batter Ishan Kishan, who can either open the innings or slot into the middle-order.

IND vs NZ: When and where to watch India vs New Zealand 1st T20I live on TV and online streaming

After a rude reality check in the T20 World Cup, India will aim to press the reset button for the 2022 edition under new captain Rohit Sharma and an illustrious head coach in Rahul Dravid, starting with the three-match series against New Zealand beginning here on Wednesday.

The duo in the next 11 months will underline the 'Men In Blue''s template and philosophy in the shortest format after it became clear that some rejigging will be needed as a part of course correction.

The disappointment in the UAE edition has forced India to look beyond Hardik Pandya, who for long has not been able to bring his all-round skills to the table.

Star IPL performer Venkatesh Iyer has been brought in as Hardik's replacement and the three games is likely to give an indication if he can be groomed for the much needed fast bowling all-rounder's slot.

India can also do with more power hitters in the batting department and Venkatesh, who played for KKR this IPL, has shown his ability to hit long and big.

The other IPL performers who have been picked in the squad are Ruturaj Gaikwad, Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan and Yuzvendra Chahal, who makes a comeback after controversially being left out of the World Cup squad.

With Jasprit Bumah rested for the series, India will be looking to find another pacer, who can consistently clock 140kmph and above. As it was seen in the UAE, the extra pace always comes in handy, bringing Avesh and Mohammad Siraj into the picture.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was not at his best in the UAE, has been given another opportunity to find his A game.

The think tank comprising skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid will also assess a player's utility keeping the Australian conditions in the mind as the country hosts the World Cup in less than 12 months time.

There are five shortest format openers in the side and slotting them in various middle-order position will be a challenge.

Rohit and vice-captain K L Rahul are expected to open on Wednesday but India might be tempted to experiment in the presence of more options like Ishan Kishan and Gaikwad. In fact, even Venkatesh got all his runs opening for KKR but he is set to bat in the middle-order.

Suryakumar Yadav could not find his rhythm during the World Cup but he is one player India would be looking to groom at number four, especially for the true pitches in Australia.

In the absence of rested Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel can fill the spin bowling all-rounder slot while R Ashwin is expected to retain his place in the playing eleven after an impressive white-ball comeback in the UAE.

India had only five bowlers to choose from for most part of the World Cup while other top teams had up to seven options. Therefore, one might see one of the specialist batters rolling his arm over.

Their opponents New Zealand, who effectively knocked India out of the World Cup, have reached Jaipur on a chartered flight from Dubai with little time to reflect on their loss to Australia in the title clash.

Head coach Gary Stead has already spoken about how the challenges his team faces, having to regroup so quickly after a draining event like the World Cup.

Skipper Kane Williamson has been given rest for the T20s so that he is fresh for the following Test series. Seasoned pacer Tim Southee will lead the team in his absence.

However with Trent Boult for company and dangerous Daryl Mitchell in the top-order, New Zealand will be more than a handful in this series.

New Zealand could give opportunities to players who did not have much to do in the UAE including Kyle Jamieson who only played the warm-up games.

One of the interesting match-ups will be skipper Rohit against Ish Sodhi as the India captain has had problem against wrist spinners in the past.

Squads:

India: Rohit Sharma (captain), KL Rahul, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan, Venkatesh Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal, R Ashwin, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Harshal Patel, Mohammad Siraj.

Squads: India: Rohit Sharma (captain), KL Rahul, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan, Venkatesh Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal, R Ashwin, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Harshal Patel, Mohammad Siraj. New Zealand: Todd Astle, Trent Boult, Mark Chapman, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Kyle Jamieson, Adam Milne, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Tim Seifert, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee (captain).

India vs New Zealand 1st T20I Preview: Men in Blue look for 'fresh T20 template' in Rohit-Dravid era

"We are here to play cricket," India's T20 vice-captain K L Rahul said when questioned about Jaipur's growing air pollution levels ahead of the series opener against New Zealand.

Like Delhi, Jaipur's air pollution levels spiked following Diwali earlier this month. On Saturday, Jaipur recorded extremely low AQI levels, and smog engulfed the city even on Monday morning.

"Actually, we haven't stepped out yet. We just reached the stadium so I don't know, I don't have an answer to that. I am not carrying a metre with me in my hand to say how bad the pollution is.

"I am sure it won't be that bad. We all are here to play cricket," said Rahul before the Indian team's first practice session on Monday.

Meanwhile, in the presence of skipper Rohit Sharma, his colleagues, and other support staff members, new head coach Rahul Dravid observed his first training session with the national team.

'We are here to play cricket' says KL Rahul on air pollution threat to first T20I vs New Zealand

New Zealand coach Gary Stead says his team is bracing up for a "tough and challenging" schedule as it heads to India for a three-match T20 series, starting just three days after the T20 World Cup final which the Black Caps lost to Australia here.

New Zealand on Sunday lost to Australia by eight wickets in the showpiece but Kane Williamson's men will hardly have any time to regroup as it faces India in the opening T20I at Jaipur on Wednesday.

It will be followed by the second and third T20Is on November 19 and November 21, before they kick off their World Test Championship defence with two games in Kanpur and Mumbai.

"It's the first time that I can remember that we're so quickly into another series immediately at the back-end of the T20 World Cup," Stead was quoted as saying by 'ESPNcricinfo'.

"It's definitely tough and challenging but it is what is in front of us."

The members of the Test side, who are not part of the T20 squad, are already in India.

It will be a busy time for the kiwi support staff as they juggle with training the Test players in the morning and the T20 cricketers in the evening in the next few weeks.

"We've got nine-ten guys in India already, who are preparing for those Test matches, and hopefully we can get up and have a really great performance against India."

New Zealand cricketers have been in the bio-bubble for varying time period with 10 members of the T20 squad also competing at the IPL in UAE which preceded the ICC event, while others like Glenn Phillips and Jimmy Neesham played at the Hundred.

There were others like Martin Guptill, Mark Chapman and Ish Sodhi, who also stayed in the UAE bubble following New Zealand's decision to call off their tour of Pakistan due to security concerns in September.

In some good news for New Zealand, pace spearhead Lockie Ferguson, who missed the T20 World Cup due to a calf injury, is likely to return to action.

Ferguson, who was sidelined just hours before New Zealand's opening match against Pakistan in Sharjah, has resumed bowling at the nets in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

"In terms of Lockie, I think he is pretty close," Stead said.

"We will just make sure we get over there, travel okay and there's no issues like seizing up on the flight or anything like that. But I'd expect that he's going to be available for selection, which will be fantastic.

"With all the guys that are going to prepare for the Test matches, we just have to make that call over there - whether we think it's in the best interests of them and also in the best interests of the team being that the Test matches are more of our priority, I think, in the next month than what the T20 matches will be."

'Definitely tough and challenging schedule', says NZ coach Gary Stead ahead of India tour

All-rounders in Indian cricket are a rare commodity and the newest entrant to the club, Venkatesh Iyer, knows only too well that he has to keep his focus on both aspects of the game in order to remain relevant.

The 26-year-old Madhya Pradesh man has been rewarded with a maiden call-up for the T20 International home series against New Zealand starting November 17 and knows that going forward, workload management would be an important focus area for him.

"My workload management has been good so far. I am an all-rounder so I have to be equally focussed on both aspects of the game. That's what I have been doing right from my age-group state level days. It's so far not been a very big issue," the suave Kolkata Kight Riders man tod PTI in an exclusive interaction.

For Iyer the endeavour is to display multiple skills across formats.

"I have always worked hard on my red ball game and it has been my conscious effort not be one dimensional.

"If you have to play for India, you have to be consistent across formats and that's why I have put in a lot of work in both departments of the game.

"As much as I have worked on my batting, I have also worked on my bowling," said Iyer, who many like Harbhajan Singh believe can shock batters with extra pace.

His 370 runs in the IPL for KKR, along with steady medium pace that got him three wickets, brought him into national reckoning. He is being seen as a replacement of Hardik Pandya, who is still not fit to bowl and does not quite fit in as a pure batter.

Iyer, who has six half-centuries and seven wickets for Madhya Pradesh in Ranji Trophy, believes that it has been his consistency, not only in IPL but also in first-class cricket, that has helped get this far.

During the IPL in UAE, did he get a feeling that he would make it?

"I must say that it was not just about IPL that gave me belief that I could represent my country.

"When I was playing Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali for my state Madhya Pradesh, I always knew that if I carry on with good performances in domestic cricket, I would play for India one day," he said.

When he touched base in the United Arab Emirates with the KKR team in the last week of August, he wouldn't have imagined that he would make such progress in a matter of months.

Two and half months later, he was sitting in his Delhi hotel room with Madhya Pradesh teammates when fellow national team entrant Avesh Khan broke the news to him.

"We had a match (vs Kerala) and it was Avesh who came to my room and informed that both of us have been selected. Obviously, there couldn't have been a better feeling," Iyer revealed while sitting with his teammates.

He was honest in his admission that while he was working on his dream, he didn't think it would be realised so soon.

"No, I never felt that life will take such a beautiful turn. I don't expect anything but believe in taking things as they come. Yes, I am very happy and excited as this is the dream you live for but frankly speaking, I never expected it to happen so soon," Iyer said.

The lesser known aspect about Iyer is that he once got a job offer in multi-national auditing company Deloitte but decided to pursue cricket with encouragement from his parents.

With an MBA degree in finance, he has cleared the foundation and inter-level exams of Chartered Accountancy. Iyer attributes his cricketing smarts to him being a diligent student.
