Manchester United continue their torrid run. After finishing sixth in the last Premier League season, and missing out on 2022/23 Champions League (CL) football, the Red Devils have got off to a miserable start in the new EPL season, losing to Brighton (2-1) and being thrashed by Brentford (4-0).

While there is a lack of activity on the transfer window and fans' frustrations continue to rise further with each loss, the constant chatter regarding Cristiano Ronaldo's future at Old Trafford is also not helping the team management. As per various reports, the Portuguese captain is desperate to leave the club. However, a report suggests that the Old Trafford club is not willing to sell Ronaldo despite the management's concerns over his negative influence on others.

There are even reports suggesting that Ronaldo is sometimes eating alone in the cafeteria. Despite all this, the club owners remain adamant that the player will not be sold. Whatever the truth behind all such reports, one thing is certain that Man United is struggling both on and off the field at the moment.

According to a report on ESPN, United is adamant to not selling Ronaldo and reports of the club warning him over a potential contract termination are also doing the rounds. The club's bosses are believed to have informed the superstar striker that he either needs to 'fix his attitude' or risk getting his contract terminated. For the unversed, Ronaldo had signed a two-year contract last year when he was bought back by the Red Devils from Juventus.

Man United not keen to sell Ronaldo despite management's concerns over his 'negative influence': Report

Former India football team captain Bhaichung Bhutia has called FIFA's decision to ban the All India Football Federation (AIFF) a harsh one but believes it can be an opportunity for the administrative body to clean the mess and get the system in place for the future. FIFA banned AIFF on Tuesday (August 16) citing third-party influence.

In a statement, FIFA confirmed it is suspending the AIFF with immediate effect due to undue influence from third parties. The suspension comes after former AIFF president Praful Patel was ousted by the Supreme Court of India as he continued to hold the office despite completing his term as the president of the organisation.

The Supreme Court deemed Patel's extension illegal and removed him from power while placing AIFF under a Committee Of Administrators (COA). The move was a violation of FIFA's statutes as the world governing body is strictly against any third-party influence in the functioning of a national football federation.

Reacting to FIFA's ban on AIFF, former India skipper Bhutia called it a harsh call but insisted it can be a blessing in disguise for Indian football. Bhutia wants the state federations and the AIFF to work together in sorting out the current mess and work towards getting the ban revoked.

"Very unfortunate that FIFA has banned Indian football and at the same time, I feel it's a very harsh decision of FIFA to ban Indian football," Bhutia was quoted as saying by PTI.

"But at the same time, I feel it's a great opportunity for us to get our system right. It's very important that all the stakeholders -- the federation, the state associations, to come together and get the system right and everybody work for the betterment of Indian football," the former India captain added.

FIFA said it will lift the ban on AIFF when the committee of administrators appointed by the Supreme Court of India is removed and the AIFF administartion is handed over the entire control of the board's daily affairs. The ban might result in India losing the hosting rights of the upcoming U-17 Women's World Cup 2022.

'Harsh decision': Former Indian football team captain Bhaichung Bhutia reacts to FIFA's ban on AIFF

Football's premier ruling body FIFA on Tuesday decided to suspend All India Football Federation (AIFF) with immediate effect for colluding with third parties and influencing the footballing operations in the country. The suspension had been looming for a long time and FIFA stated that the decision to ban AIFF was taken unanimously.

"The Bureau of the FIFA Council has unanimously decided to suspend the All India Football Federation (AIFF) with immediate effect due to undue influence from third parties, which constitutes a serious violation of the FIFA Statutes.' said the body in its statement.

As a result of the ban, the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup scheduled to take place from October 11-30 will remain suspended. FIFA added that the future of the tournament will be decided in due time and if required, the matter may be forwarded to Bureau of the Council.

FIFA added that the suspension will only be lifted when the Indian Footballing Federation gets its act together.

"The suspension will be lifted once an order to set up a committee of administrators to assume the powers of the AIFF Executive Committee has been repealed and the AIFF administration regains full control of the AIFF’s daily affairs." added FIFA.

As reported extensively by WION, AIFF is currently in turmoil as the board is being run by the Supreme Court (SC)-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) after former president Praful Patel's ouster.

After the Supreme Court of India directed the AIFF to conduct elections in the national federation, FIFA issued its warning. In a strongly worded letter in association with Asian Football Confederation (AFC), FIFA, earlier this month remarked:

"AIFF was to call for a special general assembly in the first week of August 2022 to approve the new statute worked upon with FIFA, the AFC and the Indian football community. Unfortunately, we have been informed that the Supreme Court’s hearing held yesterday on the situation of the AIFF allegedly resulted in deviations to the aforementioned roadmap."

It further added, “If this is considered to be true, it would irrefutably jeopardise the mutual understanding which was displayed so far on the steps forward."

A ban from FIFA is expected to be catastrophic for Indian football as the national teams will not be able to take part in any international tournament. The ISL and I-League clubs who are set to compete in FIFA-governed tournaments will also be barred from participating in them. However, the most heartbreaking news will be the cancellation of host duties for the U-17 Women's World Cup. It can set back the women's game another 10-15 years.

Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy was described by prosecutors as a 'predator' who could not take no for an answer as the trial began Monday of the French soccer player accused of eight counts of rape.

Mendy also has been accused of one count of attempted rape and one count of sexual assault. He is alleged to have committed the offenses against seven young women between October 2018 and August last year.
He denies the charges.

Timothy Cray, the lawyer for the prosecution, opened the trial at Chester Crown Court in northwest England by telling the jury: "The prosecution case is simple. It has little to do with football. Instead, we say, it is another chapter in a very old story, men who rape and sexually assault women, because they think they are powerful, and because they think they can get away with it."

Mendy is standing trial with Louis Saha Matturie, who denies eight counts of rape and four counts of sexual assault relating to eight young women. The alleged offenses span from July 2012 to August last year.

Cray said Saha was Mendy's friend and fixer, and one of his jobs was "to find young women and to create the situations where those young women could be raped and sexually assaulted."

"The acts that the defendants did together show callous indifference to the women they went after," Cray told the court. "In their minds, and this could not be clearer, the stream of women they brought to their homes existed purely to be pursued for sex."

Cray told jurors they will hear from 13 different women. "Our case is that the defendants' pursuit of these 13 women turned them into predators, who were prepared to commit serious sexual offenses," Cray said.

All is not well between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG)'s star trio of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi. Mbappe reportedly feels only one of Neymar or Messi deserves to stay at the French club as the relationship between the trio seems to be hitting an all-time low.

Mbappe reportedly now possesses veto powers at PSG having signed a new three-year deal at the club earlier this summer. The French striker was close to joining La Liga giants Real Madrid, however, his move to the Spanish club broke down towards the end after PSG offered him a sensational deal making him one of the best-paid players in the world.

Mbappe reportedly also enjoys more authority in the squad now and has a say in major decisions at the club. Neymar is likely to be at the receiving end of Mbappe's wrath at the club as the French star believes there is room for only one of the Brazilian or Messi at the club alongside him.

As per a report in Get French Football News, the 23-year-old World Cup-winner sees Messi as the 'most vital' member of the squad and wants to learn from the Argentine legend, who is regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time. However, Mbappe wants Neymar out despite having played alongside him for five seasons at the club.

'Get out of there'- Cristiano Ronaldo's nephew urges Portuguese star to leave Manchester United

The All India Football Federation (FIFA) faces a potential threat of a ban from the world governing body FIFA due to third-party 'influence'. AIFF is currently in turmoil as the board is being run by the Supreme Court (SC)-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) after former president Praful Patel's ouster.

FIFA has threatened to suspend the AIFF and also strip India of the hosting rights for the U-17 Women's World Cup later this year. India are scheduled to host the U-17 Women's World Cup in October this year but might lose the hosting rights for the tournament if FIFA decides to go ahead and ban the organisation.

The warning from FIFA had come after the Supreme Court of India directed the AIFF to conduct elections in the national federation. Indian football team skipper Sunil Chettri, who had earlier said a FIFA ban can prove to be 'catastrophic' for Indian football, was recently once again asked about AIFF's potential suspension.

Speaking at his Indian Super League (ISL) club Bengaluru FC's press conference, Indian captain Chettri advised his teammates to focus on the game and not worry about the threat of a ban from FIFA. The Indian skipper said the matter is not in their control and those involved are doing their best to avoid the potential ban.

"I've spoken to the boys and my advice is to not give it too much attention to this because it is out of your control. People who are involved are doing their best to make sure that we are going to come out with the best results possible. Everyone is working hard towards it," Chettri said in the virtual presser ahead of the start of the new ISL season.

"As far as players are concerned, we are going to make sure that we do our work properly. We have to make sure to better ourselves as players. Whenever you get an opportunity to represent your club or your country, put your best foot forward. All other verticals in the AIFF are trying to fix as much as possible to make sure that they come out with flying colours," added the Indian skipper.

A ban from FIFA will be disastrous for Indian football as it will mean the national teams won't be able to take part in any international tournament. The ISL and I-League clubs who are set to compete in FIFA-governed tournaments will also be barred from participating in them. The U-17 Women's World Cup 2022 can also be shifted to another country from India in case of a FIFA ban.

Trouble seems to be brewing at Le Parc des Princes as Neymar has seemingly liked a post that criticised teammate and PSG star Kylian Mbappe. The Brazilian was recently snubbed as the primary penalty taker of the team with the Frenchman usurping his position.

However, it is interesting to note that it was Mbappe who recently missed the opportunity to bolster his team's score against Ligue 1 opponents Montpellier by missing a penalty. Neymar, on the other hand, stepped up to the occasion and buried the ball in the back of the net when he was given the opportunity to do so in the second half.

A fan took to social media, criticising the team's decision to sideline Neymar in order to offer Mbappe the position of primary penalty taker. Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo is once again facing flak on social media after he was snubbed the away fans at the Gtech Community Stadium after the club's woeful 4-0 loss against Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday (August 14). Ronaldo didn't acknowledge the away fans at the stadium after the game and stormed into the tunnel following the embarrassing loss.

It was yet another dismal performance from United as their horror run continued under new manager Erik Ten Hag, who has now lost his first two games in charge of the club in the Premier League. There was significant optimism surrounding Ten Hag's arrival at Old Trafford this summer but consecutive defeats in the first two games have left the fan base fuming.

On Saturday, Brentford ran riot at home as the hosts scored 4 goals inside the first 35 minutes at Old Trafford to head into the second half with a stunning 4-0 cushion. Josh Dasilva opened the scoring in the 10th minute followed by goals from Mathias Jensen, Ben Mee and Bryan Mbeumo as Brentford registered a comprehensive win against United.

Following the shocking defeat, a number of United players went on to acknowledge the fans at the away end, who kept chanting in support of the club despite their 4-0 defeat to Brentford. However, Portuguese star Ronaldo didn't approach the fans and was spotted leaving midway despite insistence from manager Ten Hag’s assistant Steve McClaren.

WATCH: Cristiano Ronaldo refuses to acknowledge Manchester United's away fans after Brentford defeat

Manchester United's disastrous run continued under new manager Erik Ten Hag on Saturday as the Red Devils suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat against Brentford in the Premier League. It was a forgetful outing for Harry Maguire & Co., who have now lost two games in a row so far this season and are currently reeling at the bottom of the Premier League table.

It was an awful start for United in the game as they found themselves trailing inside the first ten minutes after a terrible mistake from goalkeeper David De Gea saw Josh Dasilva put Brentford ahead 1-0. What followed was a shambolic first half for United at Gtech Community Stadium as Brentford smashed three more goals in the next 25 minutes to lead 4-0 at halftime.

United failed to break the deadlock even in the second half as they were handed a stark reality check by Brentford at home, leaving manager Ten Hag frustrated and fuming at the end of the final whistle. The Dutchman, who arrived at the club from Ajax earlier this summer, slammed his players for their poor show in the game and admitted he would have substituted the entire playing XI at halftime if he had the choice.

Ten Hag replaced Luke Shaw, Fred and Lisandro Martinez after a disastrous first half from United where they ended up conceding 4 goals against Brentford. The United boss also admitted Brentford were a hungrier team than United on the pitch and his players didn't follow his plans in the game.

"I subbed three but I could've changed them all," a disappointed Ten Hag said after United's defeat.

"We want to bring some fresh energy in the game, so not specific to the ones we sub because I don't think that's honest to them. I think we all have seen the game and I think Brentford was more hungry. We have to question that and we will do in the coming hours. You can have a good plan but we had to put the plan into the bin," he added.

Ten Hag was brutal in his assessment after United's humiliating loss and said his team have been 'naive' when asked about his tactics after the home team conceded the 2nd goal while trying to play from the back. The Dutchman said United's performance was not good enough and that they need to improve soon.

"I don't want to play from the back when it's not possible. It was naive how we played today. You have to play more direct.

"We attracted them, the space was high up the pitch, you have to do that option but that is what we didn't do. We will learn, we will have to learn, it's not good enough and it's not the level and the standard of how we want to act," said the Manchester United boss, who now has writing on the wall as he awaits his biggest test yet against arch-rivals Liverpool in the Premier League next.

Manchester United at bottom of table for 1st time in 30 years after 4-0 rout, coach takes responsibility

Former Manchester United wingback Gary Neville recently offered fans his take on their most recent outing in the Premier League, in which they suffered a humiliating 4-0 loss at the hands of Brentford. While discussing the same, Neville admitted that he had never seen the club put in a worse performance in the last 42 years, which happens to be the exact amount of time he's followed the club.

The Red Devils slumped to the bottom of the Premier League table after suffering their second consecutive setback in the league. United's catastrophic afternoon began with David De Gea letting Josh Dasilva's tame effort into the back of the net barely 10 minutes into the game.

Their deficit was doubled shortly thereafter when former Brentford star Christian Eriksen, who was booed by the home fans, lost the ball to Mathias Jensen due to a poor pass by De Gea, leading to a goal. Brentford slotted in two more goals that were a direct result of a poor defensive showing.

In an interaction with Sky Sports, Neville declared that the club had sunk lower than what was previously considered to be rock bottom, comparing the club's performance to that of the 'men U9' squad.

He said, "I'm trying to think of one thing Manchester United have done well in the first half and I can't think of one. I've been watching United for 42 years and I can't think of a moment where I've felt it was as bad as it was in that first half. If you thought it couldn't get any lower, it just has."

The Old Trafford-based outfit is currently hurtling toward its hardest test yet as they inch closer to the clash against Liverpool. Gaffer Erik Ten Haag and his band of speedsters will hope to put in a relatively better outing as they prepare to host Jurgen Klopp's men at their home ground.

'Watching men against U9s'- Gary Neville trashes Manchester United after humiliating loss against Brentford

There seems to be no end to the Cristiano Ronaldo transfer saga. The superstar footballer is keen on leaving Manchester United and wants to play for a club that can challenge for top honours. As Man United finished sixth in the last EPL season, Ronaldo will also be missing out on 2022/23 Champions League football and, hence, the Portuguese captain is keen to join a new club.

So far, plenty have been said and written about Ronaldo's transfer saga with his agent Jorge Mendes having held talks with Bayern Munich, PSG, Chelsea, Athletico Madrid, etc. However, nothing concrete has come out of all discussions. Thus, Ronaldo's old club Real Madrid has surely ruled out a move for the aging star. Amid all this, the striker continues to don the Man United jersey and was part of their 2-1 drubbing at the hands of Brighton in their new EPL season opener. Ronaldo had joined the club last year, for a two-year contract, but couldn't prevent United from sinking further as they ended at the sixth position in the previous EPL season.

There seems to be no end to the Cristiano Ronaldo transfer saga. The superstar footballer is keen on leaving Manchester United and wants to play for a club that can challenge for top honours.

Will Real Madrid sign Cristiano Ronaldo once again? Club president answers the big question

The World Cup in Qatar will kick off a day earlier than scheduled, governing body FIFA said on Thursday after its ruling bureau agreed unanimously to hold the opening ceremony and the host nation's first match on Sunday, November 20. The original plan was for the opening ceremony to be held before Qatar's game on Nov. 21 against Ecuador, which would have created the unusual situation of two matches — Senegal v Netherlands and England v Iran — being held before the ceremony.

Normally, the ceremony is conducted before the kick-off of the first game of the tournament. Hosts Qatar will now make their World Cup debut against Ecuador at 1900 local time after an opening ceremony at the 60,000-capacity Al Bayt Stadium. The change is in line with the long-standing tradition of opening matches involving hosts or holders.

The Group A match between Senegal and Netherlands, originally scheduled to be the tournament opener, has been pushed back by six hours from 1300 local time on Nov. 21 to the 1900 slot vacated by Qatar v Ecuador. England's Group B match with Iran and the United States' opener against Wales, which are also scheduled for Nov. 21, remain unaffected by the change.

The plan has been signed off by a committee comprising of the heads of FIFA's six regional confederations and president Gianni Infantino. "The decision followed an assessment of the competition and operational implications, as well as a thorough consultation process and an agreement with key stakeholders and the host country," FIFA said.

The change stretches the World Cup to 29 days until the Dec. 18 final and comes after several rounds of ticket sales, with organisers having sold 1.8 million tickets so far. "Ticket holders will be duly notified by email that the relevant matches have been rescheduled and their tickets will remain valid irrespective of the new date/time," FIFA added.

"In addition, FIFA will seek to address any issues arising from this change in a case-by-case basis."

It will be the first World Cup staged in the Middle East and has been pushed back to later in the year than its typical June-July schedule to avoid the region's punishing summer heat.

Indian football team set to lock horns with Vietnam, Singapore in friendlies

Brazil insisted that it won’t play its suspended World Cup qualifying match against Argentina next month, arguing that the risks are too high ahead of the tournament in Qatar.

The qualifier nearly one year ago in Sao Paulo was stopped by local health officials after six minutes due to COVID-19 protocols regarding four Argentinian players.

FIFA fined the soccer bodies of both countries and demanded the match be played. Brazil’s confederation and Argentina’s federation took the case to the Court for Arbitration of Sport, which is expected to rule later in August. The game would be in September but FIFA has not set a date.

Brazil coach Tite does not want to play the match due to risks of injuries, suspensions and a potential boycott by the Argentinians, according to Brazilian confederation president Ednaldo Rodrigues.

Brazilian media has reported that Selecao would rather play two friendlies in Europe.

“We will reach out to FIFA so this match is not played. I will make every effort to answer to the request of our coaching staff,” Rodrigues said in a statement.

Manchester City and France footballer Benjamin Mendy stands trial Wednesday for the alleged rape and assault of seven women, which could see his playing career end in jail if convicted.

Mendy, 28, is due at Chester Crown Court in northwest England to face eight counts of rape, one count of sexual assault and one count of attempted rape, relating to seven young women.

He pleaded not guilty in May to nine of the 10 charges, but was subsequently hit with the further rape count which has not yet been put to him in a court.

All the alleged offences are said to have taken place at Mendy's home address in Prestbury near Macclesfield, also in northwest England, between October 2018 and August last year.

He is standing trial before a jury along with his co-defendant Louis Saha Matturie, 40, who has also pleaded not guilty.

Matturie denies eight counts of rape and four counts of sexual assault, relating to eight young women. His alleged offences span from July 2012 to August last year.

Both the defendants are on bail, with Mendy subject to what a judge previously called "stringent" conditions, including the surrender of his passport.

After his arrest last August he was initially held at Altcourse prison in Liverpool, and then a prison in Manchester, before being freed on bail in January.

None of the women said to have been assaulted can be named under English law, which also places restrictions on what can be reported about the case. The trial is expected to last up to six weeks.

It begins in the same week that former Manchester United star Ryan Giggs started his trial on charges of attacking and coercively controlling his ex-girlfriend.

Mendy joined Premier League champions City from French side Monaco in 2017. He has played 75 times for the Manchester club, but his playing time was limited by injuries and a loss of form.

He was suspended by City after being charged by police in August. The last of Mendy's 10 caps for France came in November 2019, after the defender won the World Cup in 2018.

Cristiano Ronaldo continues to generate headlines. The superstar footballer has reportedly been unhappy at Manchester United for quite some time and wants to end his second innings at the Red Devils to join some other club that plays in the Champions League. Man United had ended at the sixth spot in the last EPL season and, thus, Ronaldo is missing 2022/23 Champions League football.

Thus, many reports have stated that his agent Jorge Mendes is on his toes to find a new and suitable club for Ronaldo. Nonetheless, he is struggling at present with big clubs such as Bayern Munich, PSG, Chelsea, etc. have said a 'No' to roping in the Portuguese captain. Hence, Ronaldo has no other option but to play the waiting game at the moment and remain firm at Man United.

There have been discussions between Ronaldo and United manager Erik ten Hag but reports suggest that the former is still keen to part ways with the club. In United's 2022/23 EPL season opener, Ronaldo came from the bench against Brighton but couldn't prevent a 1-2 defeat for his side. Amid all this, United legend Wayne Rooney is of the opinion that the club should let go of Ronaldo.

"I think United should let Cristiano Ronaldo go,” the former Manchester United striker told The Times.

"It's not that Ronaldo can't play in a Ten Hag team. He can play in any team. Ronny will always score you goals. But my personal view is that United aren't ready to challenge for the title now, so the aim has to be to build a team that can win the league in the next three to four years, and you have to plan for that.

"If the reports are true that Cristiano wants to leave the club, then United should allow him to go and get a No 9 in who is going to be there for the next three or four years and really help them build a team that can be successful. Ten Hag has to be given time to do it,” Rooney opined.

'I think Man United should...' - Wayne Rooney's take on Cristiano Ronaldo's future at Old Trafford

Manchester United's ex-winger Ryan Giggs is in a spot of bother with his personal life in turmoil. The former Wales manager has been accused by his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville of having multiple affairs, with as many as eight women, during their relationship (since 2014) and all hell broke loose when she accused him of controlling and coercive behaviour, leading to a court trial to kick off on August 8.

Since the trial has begun, a lot has been said and written about Giggs. His ex-girlfriend has now spilled the beans on their toxic relationship, where she alleged that he always demanded sex from her. In addition, Giggs has been accused of assaulting his ex on multiple occasions, also including her younger sister Emma Greville.

Dwelling more light on the 2017 incident, Greville told the police: "We got back to the hotel room [from a nightclub], and I said something and again he flipped. I had no clothes on, he grabbed me by my wrist, so hard, dragged me into the lounge bit, grabbed me on the floor, all my suitcase and threw it all into the corridor and then shut the door. I was just there naked, all my stuff in the corridor. I got all my stuff back in and got back into bed - I had to get my stuff with a towel wrapped around me."

Greville also spoke about another such incident in 2019 and stated: "I took all my clothes off, got into bed. He kicked me in the back so hard that I flew off the bed and landed on the floor. I was like, 'what’s just happened'. "He grabbed me again, into the suite bit of the room, got my bag with my laptop in and threw it at my head. He left me naked in the lounge bit."

"Ten minutes later, he grabbed me takes me back to bed and wants to have sex. I remember waking up in the morning, I woke up and you don’t instantly remember what happened. "I remember asking him, 'did you throw my bag at my head?' and he was like ‘yeah, because you accused me of flirting, you made me do it, you make me so angry that you made me do that. It’s bad for me how angry you make me, you need to be careful of that'.”

According to Greville's claims, Giggs' affairs came out in the open when she looked at his iPad. "The reality of what I found on that iPad was way worse than I could imagine. There were eight women he was having affairs with, full-on relationships that had gone on constantly from 2014. It was literally all there in black and white," she said.

Greville also revealed another dreadful incident in Dubai in 2020. After a night of drinking, Giggs had asked her to leave and ended up injuring her severely. After she ran out of patience that the ex-footballer isn't going to split up with his then wife any time soon, she gave him an ultimatum before moving to Abu Dhabi to "get away from him".

Giggs, on the other hand, has denied all such charges against him. Given the serious charges levied on him, the trial is expected to go on for some time before the court makes a final judgment.

I got all my stuff back in and got back into bed - I had to get my stuff with a towel wrapped around me." Greville also spoke about another such incident in 2019 and stated: "I took all my clothes off, got into bed. He kicked me in the back so hard that I flew off the bed and landed on the floor. I was like, 'what’s just happened'. "He grabbed me again, into the suite bit of the room, got my bag with my laptop in and threw it at my head. He left me naked in the lounge bit." I remember waking up in the morning, I woke up and you don’t instantly remember what happened. "I remember asking him, 'did you throw my bag at my head?' and he was like ‘yeah, because you accused me of flirting, you made me do it, you make me so angry that you made me do that. It’s bad for me how angry you make me, you need to be careful of that'.” According to Greville's claims, Giggs' affairs came out in the open when she looked at his iPad.

Lionel Messi can make a sensational return to FC Barcelona next summer as the Spanish club has reportedly already started negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) over re-signing the Argentine legend. Messi left his boyhood club Barcelona last year after the Catalan giants failed to renew his contract due to financial constraints and La Liga rules.

However, Barcelona are now keen on reuniting with their former superstar and have also started discussions with Messi's representatives over a move back to the club in 2023. The news was reported by Catalunya Radio on Sunday after Barcelona beat Mexican side Pumas UNAM 6-0 in the Joan Gamper Trophy.

As per Catalunya Radio's El Club de la Mitjanit programme, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has begun discussions with Messi's entourage about a possible return to Barcelona next year. Messi currently has a two-year contract at PSG which will expire next summer making him a free agent. The Argentine, however, has an option to extend his deal to another season at the French club.

However, Messi is reportedly keen on returning to Barcelona where he rose to fame after graduating from the club's famed La Masia academy. Messi, who is regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, spent 17 seasons at Barcelona winning numerous trophies and a staggering 7 Ballon d'Ors before leaving the club last summer.

Messi won ten La Liga titles, four Champions League titles, three UEFA Super Cups and three FIFA Club World Cup titles with FC Barcelona before leaving the club last summer. Messi is arguably one of the greatest to have played for the club and it remains to be seen if he will be able to make his dream return to club next summer.

The rumours of Messi's return to Barcelona had sparked up earlier this summer after FC Barcelona president Laporta said he owes a return to the Argentinian, who was let go by the club last year due to their poor financial situation. Laporta had said Messi's chapter at Barcelona is not over yet.

“I did what I had to do in order to put the institution above the best player in history. I've known Messi since he was a kid, I love Leo. I feel a moral debt to the best player in history. I'll do my best to make sure Messi has the best ending of his career with Barcelona," Laporta had said.

“I would like to do it. It will not be easy but I think that with the correct strategy we could do it. We will do our best to have Messi ending his career with Barcelona," he added.

The jury in the trial of former Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs, facing charges of assaulting his ex-girlfriend and her sister, was told by the prosecution on Monday that the Welsh international had a "sinister" side to him.

Giggs, 48, who has stepped down as Wales national team manager due to the case, faces charges of causing actual bodily harm to former partner Kate Greville and beating her younger sister Emma. He also faces one count of coercive and controlling behaviour.

The former footballer, who sat in the dock wearing a dark suit, has pleaded not guilty to the charges and his defence said the allegations were "based on distortion, exaggeration and lies". Opening the case for the prosecution, Peter Wright QC said there was a marked contrast between Giggs the player and the way he had behaved with his girlfriend in a "toxic relationship".

"On the pitch his skills were abundant and a thing of beauty. Off the pitch and in the privacy of his personal life and home and behind closed doors, there was a much uglier and more sinister side to his character," he said. Wright said the case involved "a litany of abuse, both physical and psychological of a woman that he professed to love".

"The systematic and at times violent abuse of a woman is what this case is all about, while all the time preying on her". The prosecutor described an incident in which Giggs headbutted Greville and "deliberately elbowed" her sister. Giggs is on bail on condition that he has no contact with either sister and does not go to any address where he believes they might be.

The former United favourite, who has said he looks forward to clearing his name, was first arrested in the case and released on bail in November 2020. Giggs`s defence, Chris Daw QC said he "never once used unlawful violence against Kate Greville" saying the pair "behaved like squabbling children".

He said that Giggs acknowledged there was "minor and accidental contact" during a tussle over a mobile phone but denied there was a deliberate headbutt and said it was "not remotely a criminal assault". Daw told the jury that former United manager Alex Ferguson and Giggs` former team mate Gary Neville will be heard from "in some way" during the trial.

Giggs been replaced as Wales manager after initially stepping aside in late 2020 due to the case. Rob Page has taken over the side who have qualified for November`s World Cup finals in Qatar.

Giggs made 963 appearances over 23 years for Manchester United as a player, a club record, winning a haul of honours including 13 Premier League titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies. He represented Wales as a player 64 times between 1991 and 2007 and took over as national coach in 2018.

New manager Erik ten Hag saw the depth of the crisis at Manchester United when his side fell to a 2-1 Premier League defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Sunday, with German Pascal Gross scoring twice.

United fans` hopes that the off-season would mark a turning point have faded, with the club failing to make major moves yet in the transfer market and there was a grim familiarity to the club`s opening match.

The former Ajax coach witnessed a performance that was every bit as disjointed as those produced under his predecessors Ralf Rangnick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last season.

The sense that this was a continuation of last year`s decline began before kick-off where there were yet more loud and angry protests against United`s owners, the American Glazer family, under the South Stand

If that felt familiar, then the sight of Scott McTominay and Fred in midfield as United laboured against Graham Potter`s superbly drilled side was verging on deja vu.

United had been shambolic in their 4-0 loss at Brighton in May and, even with debuts for defender Lisandro Martinez and midfielder Christian Eriksen, little felt new or changed about the performance.

Brighton took the lead on the half-hour with Leandro Trossard finding former United forward Danny Welbeck who squared the ball to the back post for Gross to slot home.

Nine minutes later, Gross doubled the lead, with his sixth career goal against United, after David De Gea had poorly pushed out a Solly March drive right into the path of the German who again made no mistake.

United went in at the break to the sound of booing from their own supporters -- once a rare occurrence but increasingly part of the experience at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag introduced Cristiano Ronaldo in the 53rd minute and the Portugal forward, who is reported to want to leave the club, provided the spark for United`s attempted comeback.

The home side gave themselves a foothold in the 68th minute when a goalmouth scramble ended with Alexis Mac Allister turning the ball into his own net but Brighton held on for a second straight win against United and their first ever at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag said he had no illusions of the scale of the task ahead of him.

"I was aware of it before, this game doesn`t change that. It is a hell of a job. We have to work really hard, analyse then move forward," he said.

"Of course definitely a setback and real disappointment. I knew from the start it would not be easy. We gave two easy balls away and it was not good in the organisation."

Brighton boss Graham Potter was full of praise for his team.

“It was a fantastic effort from the players and we deserved the win over the course of the game,” he said. “It’s a historic win for us so it’s something to be happy about.

“We had an idea about how to attack and then, when we could, we tried to press and put them under pressure. We were brave in what we did," he added.

The mystery regarding Cristiano Ronaldo's future at Manchester United continues to get complicated ahead of the new EPL season. Ahead of Man United's Premier League opener, where they face Brighton on August 07 (Sunday), it is being reported that the new manager Erik Ten Hag is set to bench Ronaldo from the playing XI.

So far, Ronaldo missed the Red Devils' pre-season tour of Bangkok and Australia -- citing personal reasons -- and only made a 45-minute appearance against Rayo Vallecano. His early exit from the game has not impressed the new manager, who is set to snub the star striker from Man Utd's season-opener (as per a report in The Sun).

Ten Hag is reportedly keen to go ahead with the front three in the form of Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial. Thus, Ronaldo's omission will certainly make heads turn especially at a time when the 37-year-old isn't too keen to continue at the club. If this happens, this might push him further towards an exit.

Recently, in an interview with Dutch outlet Viaplay Sport Nederland, Erik opined on Ronaldo leaving the game before the final whistle. He said in this regard, "It is not a good look to leave early when you have been involved in the squad. It is different if you are up in the stands and not involved."

“You would expect someone who has played in the game to be in the changing rooms at the end to listen to the manager’s thoughts. Also a lot of people were there to see him and he was not even involved in the clapping of the fans after the final whistle,” Ten Hag added, further criticising Ronaldo.

It is clear that all is not well between Erik and Ronaldo and the two aren't on the same page as yet.
