In a shocking revelation, an FC Barcelona executive reportedly tried to bribe a UEFA official into launching an investigation against Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain over Financial Fair Play regulations in 2020. The Barcelona executive brought up the matter of FFP during his dinner meeting with a UEFA counterpart last year and asked if there was anyone in the department 'he could pay'.

Barcelona have been enduring one of the worst financial crisis in the club's history as they are yet to recover from the huge losses suffered due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some poor decisions in the transfer market along with their financial mishandlings have led to a mess at the Spanish club.

FC Barcelona have sold a part of the club's telecast rights and a stake in their studios among others to boost their finances and make signings in the ongoing transfer window. However, they are still far off from recovering from the staggering debt they are in.

Amid the club's poor financial situation, a report in The Athletic has claimed a Barcelona executive tried to bribe a UEFA official in 2020. The Barcelona executive felt UEFA have been light on rich clubs like Man City and PSG, who have great financial backing when it comes to Financial Fair Play regulations. He also felt Barcelona are not in a position to compete with those clubs considering their current financial situation.

“Eventually, the Barça official asked, ‘Is there anyone in your FFP department we could pay?’. The UEFA official understood that his counterpart was trying to find somebody to bribe," The Athletic quoted an excerpt from a book written by Financial Times journalist Simon Kuper which exposed the details of the meeting between the Barcelona executive and the UEFA official.

Responding to the allegations, UEFA said they are unaware of any such meeting with a Barcelona executive. Interestingly, UEFA had banned Manchester City for two years from the Champions League in 2020 for a serious FFP breach and failure to cooperate in the investigation.

However, the ban was lifted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in July, 2020 which allowed City to continue taking part in the competition that season. City's fine was also reduced to 10 million euros from 30 million euros by the court.

Two years after the Premier League clubs had decided to express solidarity with the rest of the world in 'taking the knee' as a gesture of standing up against racism of all forms, they have decided not to continue with it in each match next season. The Premier League clubs have decided the anti-racism pre-match gesture will now be limited to only a handful of significant games next season.

Premier League players had started taking the knee in 2020 after the season had resumed post the delay caused by COVID-19. The initiative had begun in the wake of the death of George Floyd, a black man, who died in police custody in Minneapolis, US earlier that year. Floyd's death had sparked massive anti-racism protests across the US and around the globe.

However, the Premier League clubs and players have now decided to not take the knee before every game next season and limit the gesture to only a few matches, which are of more significance.

In a statement, captains of the Premier League clubs reaffirmed they remain committed in their fight against racism and discrimination. However, they will only take the knee in some special matches like the opening and the final game of the season, the Boxing Day fixtures and the finals of the league, FA Cup and the EFL Cup among others.

"We have decided to select significant moments to take the knee during the season to highlight our unity against all forms of racism and in so doing we continue to show solidarity for a common cause," Premier League captains said in a statement.

"We remain resolutely committed to eradicate racial prejudice, and to bring about an inclusive society with respect and equal opportunities for all," they added.

The Premier League clubs had also decided to wear the 'Black Lives Matter' logo on their shirts. It was later replaced by the 'No Room for Racism' message. As per Reuters, 119,000 pounds were raised from the royalties from the sleeve badges with 'No Room for Racism' message on club shirts sold last season which will be donated to youth clubs. The Premier League have decided to match that amount raising the total donation figure to 2,38,000 pounds.

Premier League clubs to not take the knee before every match, gesture limited to only significant games

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has ripped into Cristiano Ronaldo and other players who had left early during the club's friendly against Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford on Sunday. Ronaldo was spotted leaving Old Trafford minutes after he was substituted by Ten Hag at halftime during the game. Some other Manchester United players also reportedly left before the final whistle.

Ronaldo's decision to leave the game early comes at a time when he has expressed his desire to leave United this summer. The Portuguese superstar who returned to the club from Juventus last summer wants to spend the final few years of his career at a club competing in the Champions League and fighting for major trophies.

He has been heavily linked with a move away from United in order to play Champions League football next season but no top club has shown any concrete interest in signing the 37-year-old. Amid endless rumours regarding his future at Old Trafford, Ten Hag has slammed Ronaldo for his 'unacceptable' behaviour during the club's friendly against Rayo Vallecano.

In an interview with Dutch outlet Viaplay Sport Nederland, Ten Hag was asked for his reaction over Ronaldo's decision to leave the stadium early during the friendly game. The United manager said it was unacceptable and that as a team each player should stay till the end of the game.

"At the beginning of the conversation, we talked about how important it is for you to have players arrive on time and your attention to details. But Cristiano seems to arrive and leave whenever he wants, how do you manage that?" - the interviewer asked Ten Hag.

"He was allowed to leave because of private reasons with his family, so what you are saying is absolutely not true," the United manager replied. He was then asked about Ronaldo leaving early - "But against Rayo, he left the game during the break," asked the interviewer.

"There were many more players who left," the United manager replied leaving the interviewer surprised. "So you think that's ok? Let it pass?" - the interviewer asked the United manager, whose love for discipline and unity and squad is a secret to none. The Dutch manager then went on to express his feelings over the matter and slammed Ronaldo and others for leaving early.

"I certainly don't condone this. This is unacceptable. For everyone. We are a team and you have to stay until the end," Ten Hag said making his intentions clear that such acts won't be tolerated in the future.

'It's unacceptable': Man Utd boss Erik Ten Hag slams Cristiano Ronaldo for leaving game before final whistle

Former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) manager Mauricio Pochettino was sacked by the French club earlier this summer after failing to deliver the Champions League title. PSG have dominated Ligue 1 over the years but have failed to win the coveted Champions League trophy despite attracting some of the best players to the club in the last few years.

After Lionel Messi's arrival at PSG last summer, the expectations were high from Pochettino, who had the trio of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Messi and the club to challenge for the Champions League. However, the club failed to make it to the final eventually leading to the Argentine manager getting sacked earlier this year.

At the time of Pochettino's sacking, there were reports that Mbappe, who signed a three-year contract extension at PSG after snubbing Real Madrid, wanted the manager to be gone. There were also rumours that Mbappe will have a larger say in PSG's sporting project after signing a contract extension at the club.

However, Pochettino has denied the rumours that Mbappe had ny role to play in his sacking and said PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who is responsible for the major decisions at the club, felt a new sporting project was needed at PSG.

"What I think is that PSG has done everything possible to retain Kylian and I also agree with that. He is one of the best players in world football today and I think that PSG, having all the resources to do it, have convinced him to stay. But I don't think Kylian is the one who designed the new project either (that saw me leave)," Pochettino told Argentinian news outlet Infobae.

"Those who rule, in this case the president, are those who would have thought that the most convenient thing was a new project in the club," he added.

Pochettino, who has so far managed clubs like Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and PSG in his managerial career, also opened up about working with Messi for the first time in his career. Messi left Barcelona in an unexpected turn of events last year to join PSG as a free agent. Pochettino labelled Messi the best in the world and suggested that Mbappe could be a potential successor to his throne in the future.

"For me, Leo Messi is the best in the world. There is no doubt," said Pochettino. "Afterwards it is clear that Mbappe is a candidate to be able to receive that crown. There is Neymar, who for me is also one of the best players in the world," he added.

Paris St Germain's Neymar scored twice with Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos contributing the other two goals as they romped to a 4-0 victory over Nantes in the French Super Cup at the Bloomfield Stadium on Sunday.
It was the ninth time in 10 years that the Parisians had won the traditional season-opening clash between the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup winners, which has been regularly played outside of the country over the last decade.

PSG’s array of world-class talent did not disappoint the Israeli crowd with Messi opening the scoring in the 22nd minute, after a through ball from Neymar that allowed him to round the goalkeeper and net from a tight angle. Neymar added a second from a curling free kick on the stroke of halftime before Sergio Ramos, who spent most of last season out injured after his move from Real Madrid, added the third with an audacious backheel from close range in the 57th minute.

England players celebrate with fans at victory party in London after clinching maiden Women's Euro title

England defeated Germany 2-1 in a nail-biting final to lift their maiden Women's Euro title on Sunday (August 01). It was an enthralling final in front of a sold-out crowd at the Wembley Stadium where hosts England came out on top after Chloe Kelly scored the winner in extra time to officially 'bring it home' for the Lioness, who had a memorable campaign in the Women's Euro this year.

A record 87,192 people attended the much-awaited final between England and Germany at Wembley making it a historic affair. It was the largest crowd at any Euro game across men's and women's football in the history of the tournament. England were certainly the favourites with unparalleled home support backing the Lioness to clinch glory.

Manchester United forward Ella Toone opened the scoring for England in the 62nd minute to put the hosts ahead in the final but her goal was cancelled out by Germany's Lina Magull, who equalised for her side in the 79th minute to silence the roaring Wembley crowd and force the game into extra time.

The Women's Euro title is England's first major trophy in international football since the men's team won the FIFA World Cup in 1966 after defeating West Germany in the final. England head coach Sarina Wiegman said it was pleasing to witness the kind of support the England women's team got from the home crowd and believes the tournament has done a lot to bring a change in society as far as women are concerned.

"I think we really made a change. I think this tournament has done so much for the game but also for society and women in society in England but I also think in Europe and across the world and I hope that will make a (bigger) change too," Wiegman said in the post-match presser after the Women's Euro 2022 final.

"It's really, really nice to see what we saw today when we came into the stadium how enthusiastic everyone was and how the fans have stood behind us," she added.

Darwin Nunez to Aurelien Tchouameni: 5 most expensive signings of 2022 summer transfer window so far

Former Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has slammed the Bundesliga giants for 'lying' to the fans over his exit terms this summer. Lewandowski, who enjoyed a stunning 8-year spell at Bayern, left the German club this summer to secure a switch to Barcelona in a deal worth around 50 million euros.

Lewandowski had made it clear to Bayern this summer that he wanted to leave the club with FC Barcelona interested in his services. The Polish striker, who had one year left on his contract, was not willing to sign an extension and remained firm on leaving despite Bayern publically claiming he was not for sale.

The Polish striker, who played an instrumental role in Bayern Munich's success over the last few years, recently opened up on his move to Barcelona and denied the reports that he wanted to leave due to Erlin Haaland's potential arrival at the club. Norweigan striker Haaland was heavily linked with Bayern before completing a move to Manchester City earlier this summer.

"(My exit) had nothing to do with Erling [Haaland]," Lewandowski told ESPN when asked if Haaland's potential arrival was one of the reasons behind his departure from Bayern.

"I am the guy who even if something's not good for me -- truth is more important. I don't want to speak about what happened exactly. But if the question is if the decision to move was because of him, no, I didn't see the problem if he joined Bayern Munich," he added.

Lewandowski then went on to slam Bayern Munich for internal politics at the club and feeding wrong information to the fans about his move to Barcelona. The 33-year-old striker, who was one of the favourites to win the Ballon d'Or in 2020, said a lot of 'bullsh*t' was spoken about him by the club before his transfer to Barcelona.

"But some kind of people doesn't say to me the truth, say something different. And for me it was always important to be clear, to stay true, and maybe for a few people that was the problem. And in the end I know that something doesn't work well with my person as well and I knew that, OK I see and I feel that maybe it's a good time to move out of Bayern Munich and join Barcelona," Lewandowski told ESPN about his move.

"I had a very good relationship with my teammates, with the staff, with the coach, and these are all things I'm going to miss because I spent a beautiful time there. And we were not only friends from the pitch but also something more. But in the end this chapter is over and I open a new chapter in my life and a new chapter in my career.

"So I feel that I'm in the right position, right place. So everything that's happened in the last maybe few weeks before I left Bayern Munich, that was also of course a lot of politics. The club tried to find an argument why they can sell me to another club because before it was difficult to explain maybe to the fans. And I had to accept that even though it was a lot of bullsh*t, a lot of sh*t said about me. Not true, but in the end I knew that the fans, even in this period, still support me a lot," he added.

The Wagatha Christie trial: Coleen Rooney wins over Rebekah Vardy

Cristiano Ronaldo's future at Manchester United continues to make the headlines. Ever since it was reported that the Portuguese captain isn't willing to stay back at the Red Devils' camp, his agent Jorge Mendes has been on the lookout for a new club where Ronaldo can begin from scratch and keep competing for major titles.

In the last EPL season, Man United finished sixth and, thus, Ronaldo will miss the Champions League (CL) football for the 2022/23 season if he chooses to stay put. Hence, he is eager to exit the club at the earliest despite not many takers at the moment. Nonetheless, a new twist has emerged in the Ronaldo transfer saga, on why he is too desperate to leave Man United .

According to a report in The Athletic, Ronaldo is not keen on playing in the Europa League this summer as he fears his arch-rival Lionel Messi could better his Champions League tally. In comparison to Ronaldo, the PSG striker Messi is gearing up to feature in Europe's top-tier club competition. Unlike Ronaldo, the Argentine captain is also one of the favourites to lift the Champions League title next year, with his French club undoubtedly being one of the strongest sides in Europe.

Not much separates the two legends Ronaldo and Messi when it comes to the CL tally. The Portugal captain has scored a total of 140 goals in CL so far in his glittering career whereas Messi's tally is 125. One can argue that scoring as many as 15 goals in a single season is certainly no cakewalk or a surety, it is to be noted that Messi is two years younger than Ronaldo, hence, he has every chance of surpassing his tally in the future.

A clinical show by England crushed Sweden 4-0 in the semi-finals of the Women`s Euro 2022 on Tuesday, sending the hosts into the final of the prestigious football event. The hosts sealed their spot in the tournament decider in front of a record-breaking audience at Bramall Lane. Sweden was pretty solid in the first half and they kept testing England for a good chunk of it. It was Beth Mead who broke the deadlock in the 34th minute, collecting a pass from Lucy Bronze and netting her sixth goal of the tournament. The scoreline read 1-0 in favour of England at half-time. Lucy Bronze doubled the hosts` lead just three minutes after the break, with Sweden not able to stop her header after a corner. A VAR was held to check for offside, but the goal stood.

In the 68th minute, England made the scoreline 3-0 with Alessia Russo netting the goal. In the 76th minute, Sweden`s evening went from bad to worse as Fran Kirby scored another goal for England. The goalkeeper Lindahl got her hand on the ball, but it was still not enough as the ball looped over her head and went into the net. Despite the nervous opening of half an hour, England was able to seal the match in front of a crowd of over 28,000 people. They will meet either Germany or France in the final on Sunday at Wembley Stadium. Following the win, England manager Sarina Wiegman was quoted by Sky Sports as saying: "You asked yesterday if we were ready to write history. This is history. We said before the tournament and throughout that we want to inspire the nation, I think that is what we are doing and making a difference. The whole country is proud of us, and even more girls and boys will want to play football."

Despite the talk, it seems Ronaldo is still keen to leave Man United and start afresh in a new club.

Ronaldo remains adamant to leave the Red Devils and join a club where he can compete for major titles. With United finishing sixth in the last EPL season, he will miss Champions League football as well for the 2022/23 season. Earlier, the Portuguese captain had missed the club's pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia, for personal reasons, which raised speculations of his exit.

Hosts England waltzed past Sweden into the Women`s Euro 2022 final with Beth Mead, Lucy Bronze, Alessia Russo and Fran Kirby all on target in a sensational 4-0 win in front of a frenzied sell-out crowd at Bramall Lane on Tuesday.

The Lionesses made a nervy start but once Mead produced a moment of brilliance to fire them ahead in the 34th minute it was one-way traffic for Sarina Wiegman`s side who became the first England women`s team to reach a major final since 2009.

England have now won 11 consecutive matches and will face either Germany or France, who meet on Wednesday, in a Wembley showdown on Sunday as they bid to win their first major trophy. Sweden, the second-ranked team in the world, had three big chances to take the lead early on and were denied by the woodwork and they paid a heavy price.

Mead produced a great turn on the edge of the area to power a shot beyond goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl to give England a halftime lead that was barely deserved. But they turned on the style in the second half to crank up a party atmosphere inside the stadium.

Bronze headed England`s second in the 48th minute from a corner and Lauren Hemp somehow failed to make it 3-0 when she fired against the crossbar from substitute Russo`s low cross.

Russo then produced an outstanding piece of improvisation to take the game away from Sweden, sending a cheeky back heel through the legs of goalkeeper Lindahl.

Kirby then put the icing on the cake with a flighted effort that Lindahl could only help into the back of the net. After that it was exhibition stuff for a rampant England side who will now take some stopping in Sunday`s final, especially with Mead in such scintillating form.

The Arsenal forward is the leading scorer at the tournament with six goals and two assists in five games so far.
"I think at the full time whistle we didn`t really know what to do," Mead said as the adopted British sporting anthem "Sweet Caroline" echoed around the Yorkshire arena.

"It was an unbelievable atmosphere and we are excited to be in the final. The goal came at a good time because there was pressure on us and they had a few chances."

It was a chastening evening for Sweden who had looked the more likely side early on. There was less than a minute on the clock when Sofia Jakobsson got in behind England`s defence and forced a fine save from Mary Earps who denied Jakobsson again soon after.

Stina Blackstenius also headed against the bar but Sweden`s night was soon to disintegrate as England rode the wave of euphoria that has built throughout the tournament.

Clinical England thrash Sweden 4-0 to reach Women's Euro 2022 final

Cristiano Ronaldo has been linked with a move to several top European clubs this summer after expressing his desire to leave Manchester United. Ronaldo returned to United last year from Juventus and enjoyed a prolific season with the club, scoring 18 goals in the Premier League. However, United endured a disastrous campaign and finished 6th in the league to miss out on Champions League football.

Ronaldo reportedly wants to spend the final few years of his career playing for a club competing in the Champions League and believes United do not have the quality in their squad required to challenge for titles. Hence, he has informed the club about his desire to leave in search of a fresh challenge.

Ronaldo has been linked with a move to top clubs like Chelsea, PSG and Bayern Munich among others. However, none of them have shown concrete interest in signing the 37-year-old, who is regarded as one of the greatest of all time. Both Ronaldo's age and his playing style is a concern for clubs, who believe Ronaldo won't fit into their playing style.

Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn recently explained why Bayern don't want to make a move for Ronaldo this summer despite him scoring a total of 24 goals for United across competitions last season. Kahn said he personally regards Ronaldo as one of the greatest footballers of all time but he doesn't fit the club's philosophy.

"We discussed this issue because otherwise, we would not be doing our job properly. I personally consider Cristiano Ronaldo one of the greatest footballers ever on this planet," Kahn told Germany's SportBild magazine.

"But we came to the conclusion that despite all the appreciation for Cristiano, he would not have fit in our philosophy in the current situation," he added.

Bayern are in desperate need of striking reinforcements ahead of the new season after Polis striker Robert Lewandowski joined FC Barcelona this summer. Nonetheless, Bayern have signed Senegalese forward Sadio Mane from Liverpool and would expect him to shoulder goal-scoring responsibilities in Lewandowski's absence.

Trouble seems to be mounting up for Brazilian star Neymar, who is set to face trial in October this year over alleged irregularities in his transfer to FC Barcelona from Brazilian club Santos in 2013. As per a report in AFP, judicial sources informed that Neymar along with his parents and former FC Barcelona presidents Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu will be tried for alleged corruption in the Brazilian's transfer to Barcelona.

Neymar, who currently plays for French club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), joined the Ligue 1 outfit from Barcelona in 2017 for a record transfer fee of 222 million euros making him the most expensive transfer in football history. However, Neymar isn't facing legal trouble for his move to PSG but for his transfer from Santos to Barcelona.

A Brazilian company DIS has levelled charges of corruption against Neymar and his parents while former Barcelona presidents Rosell and Bartomeu are also set to face charges of fraud. DIS are former owners of a percentage of Neymar's rights and were supposed to earn a part of the player's transfer fee earned by Santos from Barcelona for his transfer in 2013.

Barcelona had officially announced that they paid a transfer fee of 57.1 million ($63.6 million) for Neymar's transfer from Santos in 2013, out of which 40 million euros were paid to the footballer's family and the remaining 17.1 million euros went to Santos. Santos paid 6.8 million out of the 17.1 million to DIS for the player's rights.

However, Spanish prosecutors later revealed that Barcelona actually paid at least 83.3 million euros for Neymar's transfer from Santos after DIS alleged that the Brazilian footballer had joined hands with Barcelona to hide the real cost of the entire deal. Thus, DIS have levelled charges against Neymar, his parents as his father acts as his agent, and former Barcelona presidents Rossell and Bartomeu.

While Rossell was the president of Barcelona when the transfer took place, he later resigned in January 2014 over corruption charges in Neymar's transfer. Bartomeu then took over as the new president of the La Liga club. The two will face charges of corruption and fraud in the matter. The trial is set to take place from October 17 to 31 this year, as per AFP.

Neymar has insisted he was only focused on the footballing aspect of his transfer to Barcelona and trusted his father, who is also his agent. Meanwhile, the prosecutors have requested a two-year prison sentence for the footballer. This is not the first time Neymar is in trouble over financial irregularities.

The Brazilian, who is one of the best-paid footballers in the world at present, was on the 'blacklist' of Spanish authorities over unpaid taxes, as per a document in 2020. He has also faced fines over tax evasion in his native country Brazil.

If the charges against him are proved, Neymar can face a potential prison sentence which will shatter his hopes for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2022. He is Brazil's second-highest goal-scorer of all time and his absence can prve to be a huge blow for the Selecao at the World Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo arrived in Manchester and joined the Manchester United camp on Tuesday (July 26). The superstar footballer touched down in Manchester along with his superagent Jorge Mendes to hold talks with new manager Erik ten Hag regarding his future with the Red Devils, ahead of the commencement of the new EPL season.

As per various reports, Ronaldo is eager to cut short his stay at the premier club -- with one year still remaining in his contract -- after the Red Devils failed to make a mark in the last EPL season, ending sixth and missing out on Champions League football for the 2022/23 season. Thus, Ronaldo is eager to be associated with a club where he can compete in the Champions League and, hence, the 37-year-old isn't happy with how things have panned out for him in his ongoing second innings at the club. Thus, reports suggest that the Portuguese captain has handed in a transfer request. His absence from Man United's pre-season tour of Bangkok and Australia for personal reasons further raised speculations of his exit.

Was Alex Ferguson part of Ronaldo's meeting with Ten Hag over his Man UTD future? Here's the truth

The number of people watching this year`s Women`s European Championship is a record for the tournament and 58% higher than for the previous edition, UEFA said on Tuesday. The previous cumulative total audience record of 164 million viewers in 2017 was surpassed following England`s 2-1 victory over Spain in the quarter-finals on July 20.

"These excellent TV viewing figures show the massive appeal of the tournament, as well as the strong development of women’s football in the last years," Guy-Laurent Epstein, UEFA marketing director, said. England will be prepared for everything Sweden can throw at them in Tuesday`s Euro 2022 semi-final at Bramall Lane in Sheffield in the hope of inspiring the nation with their bid to win the trophy for the first time, coach Sarina Wiegman said on Monday.

The Lionesses reached the last four after Georgia Stanway scored with a wonderful extra-time strike to earn them a 2-1 win over Spain last Wednesday in the quarter-finals.

"The England team is ready to play the best game tomorrow against Sweden," Wiegman told reporters.

"Hopefully we inspire the nation. We`ve prepared for everything. We`ve talked about every scenario that can happen, so I think we`re prepared for everything."

Wiegman said a "very difficult" game awaited England as Sweden, who they have not beaten at a major tournament since 1984, are well organised and very experienced.

"We are England. We have Sweden as our opponents tomorrow. They have a very strong squad, so do we. We just hope we`ll play our style of game and get the win," she said.

"Everyone just has to stay focused on the game plan and, as much as they pose a threat, it`s about a collective. Every game is a different game and they always perform at the highest level in tournaments ... They`re No. 2 in the world and it`ll be a really tough game."

Wiegman hoped the fans would play a big role in helping England reach the final against Germany or France, who meet on Wednesday, in the best-ever attended edition of the tournament.

"Reaching the semi-final has been really great already. We saw we brought a lot of inspiration but the fans gave us a lot of inspiration too," she added.

"I hope the fans are going to bring us lots of energy again. We`ll do that ourselves, but it really was an extra dimension they gave us in those last games," Wiegman added.

England hope to inspire nation in Women's Euro 2022 semi-final against Sweden

FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta claimed Lionel Messi's historic chapter at the club is not over yet when asked about the possibility of bringing him back to the club. One of the greatest players to have played for Barcelona, Messi had joined the Spanish club's famed La Masia academy at the tender age of 13 and rose through the ranks to play for the senior team.

Messi went on to become one of the legends of the game at Barcelona and played an instrumental role in helping the club dominate Europe. Messi made his first-team debut for Barcelona in 2005/06 season and went on to feature in 16 straight seasons for the club helping them win numerous trophies and accolades.

The 34-year-old had to leave as a free agent last summer after Barcelona failed to offer him a new contract due to La Liga rules and their poor financial situation. It brought an end to Messi's glorious spell at the club as he joined Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) where he currently has a year left on his contract.

Messi had even offered to reduce his salary to sign a new contract at FC Barcelona last year but he had to be let go due to financial constraints. Nonetheless, Barcelona president Laporta has claimed Messi's grand chapter at Barcelona is not over yet and that there is a distinct possibility that the Argentine will return to the club in the future.

“Messi has been everything. For Barca, he has possibly been the best player in history, the most efficient, only comparable to Johan Cruyff in the history of Barca. But it had to happen one day, we had to make a decision as a consequence of the legacy we had received, the institution is above players and coaches," Laporta was quoted as saying by ESPN.

“I don't believe Messi's chapter at Barcelona is over. And I believe it is our responsibility to make sure that chapter is still open, that it hasn't closed. To have a moment to do it how it should have been done so that he may have a much more splendid ending than what he had," he added.

Laporta said as the president of the club he feels he 'owes' a return to the cub to Messi, who was ready to sign a new contract last year after his previous contract expired but couldn't due to the club's dire financial situation. Messi's exit had come as a shock to many, including some of his teammates but it exposed Barcelona's financial situation.

“Do I feel like I owe him one? Yes. Morally, as the president of Barcelona, I think I did what needed to be done. But also as Barcelona's president, and personally, I believe I owe him one," said Laporta on the chances of bringing Messi back to the Catalan club in order to give him a farewell he deserves.

'Lionel Messi's chapter at Barcelona not over': Club president Laporta makes bold claim on Argentine's return

Atletico Madrid are reportedly keen on signing Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United this summer. After expressing his desire to leave United for a team competing in the Champions League, Ronaldo has been struggling to find a new club despite his agent Jorge Mendes making continuous efforts to land the Portuguese forward a deal from one of the top clubs in Europe.

Ronaldo had rejoined United from Juventus last season and went on to score 18 goals in the Premier League to finish as the top-scorer for the club in the league. However, United endured a disappointing season as they finished sixth in the Premier League and failed to secure a spot in the Champions League next season.

While Ronaldo was expected to stay with the Red Devils and complete his current two-year deal with the club, the Portuguese superstar made it clear to the club's hierarchy that he wants to compete for trophies and play in the Champions League in the final few years of his career.

However, no top European club has so far shown any concrete interest in the 37-year-old with his transfer saga intensifying with each passing day. Atletico Madrid have now shockingly emerged as one of the strongest contenders to sign Ronaldo from United.

As per a report in Times.UK, Atletico Madrid have put Antoine Griezmann on the transfer market in a bid to facilitate a move for Ronaldo. Griezmann had returned to Atletico from Barcelona last year on a loan deal with a compulsory buy clause of 40 million euros.

The report further adds that Ronaldo has also been impressed by Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone's eagerness to work with him. While it remains to be seen if Atletico will make a formal bid to sign Ronaldo, United have maintained the Portuguese star is not for sale this summer.

United's new manager Erik Ten Hag has twice assured that Ronaldo remains in his plans for the upcoming season and that the 37-year-old will not be sold by the club this summer. However, Ronaldo is yet to turn up for United's ongoing pre-season tour and is yet to break his silence on his future.

Gabriel Jesus continued his impressive pre-season form with another goal as Arsenal thrashed Chelsea 4-0 in a friendly in Florida on Saturday.

Jesus, who joined Arsenal from Manchester City earlier this month, took his tally to four goals in three games for his new club in a clinical win for the Gunners in front of 63,811 fans at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium.

It was another encouraging performance for Mikel Arteta’s side, who took control of the game with two first-half goals after dominating the opening 45 minutes.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel could not hide his anger during a lacklustre first-half display from his team, who were repeatedly exposed by Arsenal’s nimble counter-attacking.

Chelsea had one promising attack after five minutes when new signing Raheem Sterling played Timo Werner into space, but French defender William Saliba snuffed out the danger with a solid covering tackle.

Arsenal should have opened the scoring moments later, when Gabriel Martinelli burst clear on the counter. The Brazilian passed to Bukayo Saka but the English international’s shot was saved by Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

The Arsenal pressure finally told in the 15th minute with a goal that came after Chelsea’s Nathaniel Chalobah surrendered possession with a misplaced pass that went straight to Granit Xhaka.

The Swiss international played a superb first time ball into Jesus who coolly chipped over the advancing Mendy to make it 1-0. Martin Odegaard made it 2-0 to the Gunners in the 36th minute with another well-worked move.

Martinelli’s pass found the Norwegian playmaker in space inside the Chelsea area, and the attacking midfielder turned smoothly and tucked a low finish past Mendy.

Chelsea’s best chance of a lacklustre half came in stoppage time when Mason Mount curled a shot from the edge of the area which beat Aaron Ramsdale but crashed back off a post.

Arsenal extended their lead midway through the second half when Saka buried a rebound from close range after Mendy parried Xhaka’s long-range strike.

Arsenal continued to create chances but had to wait until injury time for their fourth goal when Albert Sambi Lokonga headed past Mendy after a superb cross from the right by Portuguese international Cedric.

Gabriel Jesus on target again as Arsenal thrash Chelsea 4-0 in pre-season clash

Bayern Munich are on the lookout for a striker after the departure of Robert Lewandowski, who joined FC Barcelona in the ongoing summer transfer window. Lewandowski enjoyed a stunning stint at Bayern and helped the reigning Bundesliga champions continue their domination in the German top flight. The Polish striker was the club's one of the best players over the last few seasons but was allowed to leave after expressing his desire for a move.

Though Bayern have already roped in Senegalese forward Sadio Mane from Liverpool, who will bolster their attack next season, they still have space for an out-and-out striker. Bayer were heavily linked with a move for Cristiano Ronaldo this summer but the club distanced itself from the speculations.

England and Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is another forward who has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich. Kane, who was close to leaving Tottenham Hotspur last season, extended his stay with the Premier League club after being priced out of a move. However, he can be an option for Bayern.

Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann recently addressed the speculations regarding Kane and said he is a brilliant but very expensive player.

“Very expensive, that’s the problem. But a brilliant player, one of the best forwards, and perhaps one of two or three centre forwards who really can play as a centre forward. The last couple of years he did not play centre forward. Most of the time, he dropped a little bit at No.10. He is good as a No.10 as well," Nagelsmann said in a press conference when asked about the prospect of signing Kane, as quoted by Goal.com.

However, Nagelsmann hinted he and the club are open to signing the England striker, who is one of the best goalscorers in the world at present. The Bayern manager said Kane will score a lot of goals for the club if he was to join the Bundesliga giants.

"He is very strong, has a strong body and it’s possible that he would score a lot of goals in the Bundesliga, but it will be tough, I think, for Bayern Munich. We will see what will happen in the future," said the Bayern manager.

Earlier, Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn was also asked about a potential move for Kane. The Bayern CEO said the club was not interested in signing Kane this summer but didn't rule out a 'dream move' for him in the future.

“He's under contract with Tottenham. Sure, an absolute top striker, but that's all a dream of the future. Now we have to look at getting the squad together for the current season. Let's see what else happens," Kahn had said.

AS Roma fan proposes to his girlfriend in front of Jose Mourinho, video goes viral - WATCH

Georgia Stanway`s extra-time stunner helped England reach the semi-finals of Women`s Euro 2022 after they defeated Spain 2-1 in the quarter-finals. Spain frustrated their opposition during the whole 90 minutes of the match and dominated in terms of ball possession and shots. Other time-stalling techniques used by them did not allow England to reach their full potential in the match.

After the first half break, Spain took the lead shortly. England was denied their opening goal and a penalty shout via VAR in the first half. Half-time substitute Athenea del Castillo beat Rachel Daly, before cutting the ball back for Eshter Gonzalez, who made no mistake in firing it past Mary Earps in the 54th minute. By this, England had conceded their first goal in the 2022 edition of the tournament and with Spain in lead till the 84th minute, it looked like the hosts would make an early exit from the tournament.

But substitute Ella Toone scored an equalizer and sent the game into extra-time. Spain was agitated by the equalizer and felt that a foul had happened, but the referee and VAR did not feel the same and their substitute goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez was given a yellow card for dissent while on the bench. The English team was much better in the extra time and things continued to move in their way. In the 96th minute, Stanway hit a stunning goal and sealed the game for the hosts. Now in the semi-finals, England will now face either Sweden or Belgium on Tuesday at Bramall Lane. Spain has failed to make it past the quarter-finals for the third consecutive time in the European Championships. England head coach Sarina Wiegman was quoted by Sky Sports as saying following the match: "I think I went a little crazy. I was so happy - I tried to stay calm but it was so close, a game which could have gone either way. I was so happy that we won."

"We showed resilience, we showed we could come from behind. From the 80th minute, we changed shape and scored very quickly. Then we went back to that, and in extra-time at the moment we scored we were a little better. We were a little fresher, then they had to score again and were pushing," she added. "For the fans in the stadium and watching on TV, it was an incredible game. The fans here were so behind us, it was incredible to experience. Every game, the subs have had an influence. It shows the depth of our team, the eagerness of every player to start or come on. Everyone is also on the same page all the time, and wants to make a difference. I am just really happy with that, we are all supportive, everyone knows their task, otherwise you cannot do what you bring on the pitch," she continued.

"I do not make the decisions on my own, we have a technical staff communicating what we want to do before a game, during a game we talk about scenarios - it is teamwork too. What the fans did for us was really home advantage, it was really incredible to experience and it really helped our team," she concluded. Spain head coach Jorge Vilda also said, "It is a disappointing defeat and to go out of this competition. If there is a good way to lose, I think it is by playing the sort of game my players have done tonight. We are all very proud of what we saw on the pitch, everyone has improved, we gave everything, it was not to be and now we have to keep our heads held high and we will analyse it further going forward."

"We have a very good team here, there is a bright future ahead based on what we have seen at this tournament. It is a difficult day for us, we`ll have to just digest it over the next few days and see where we can improve," she continued. "We have done well in many areas, and then when there are big moments in the future we hope that we can avoid the sorts of setbacks we`ve had this time around. When there are just a few minutes left, you are thinking about how not to concede a goal. Then a cross came in, the ball was knocked down and we went into extra-time. I did not have a clear view and have not had a chance to see it back. We can take the good performance from our players, and there is a bright future ahead."

"We scored the goal, but then we were losing possession and finding it hard in midfield to get the ball. England were looking dangerous from wide areas and corners, so then we took off players who we thought would help us less in those areas."

"Everyone did well and performed at a high level. We would have liked to have had more of the ball, I think the key would have been scoring a second goal to finish off the game. It was not possible, and that led to what happened afterwards," she concluded.

Women's Euro 2022: Georgia Stanway's late goal takes England to semi-finals with 2-1 win over Spain

Cristiano Ronaldo's stay at Manchester United continues to remain a mystery. The situation has changed a lot ever since Ronaldo stated that he is looking to extend his stay and is focused on leading the Red Devils to more titles despite their forgettable run in the last EPL season.

Nonetheless, reports started flowing in that Ronaldo is now not much keen to stay back due to the club's approach in the transfer window ahead of the EPL 2022/23 edition. The superstar footballer believes the club does not have a squad capable of challenging for major trophies and the Portuguese captain is eager to compete in the Champions League, which Man United missed out on last season during their dismal campaign.

Thus, Ronaldo has been linked with several clubs such as PSG, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, etc. this summer. Among them, Atletico Madrid is also believed to be in the frame, however, as per a Spanish news outlet MARCA, the premier club have withdrawn from signing Ronaldo as they do not consider it economically viable. The report further states that Atletico can neither afford the striker's astronomical wages nor can they meet the Red Devils' asking price, around a whopping €15 million.

In addition, the report pointed out that Diego Simeone -- manager of Atletico Madrid -- is more keen to spend his finances on a move for Udinese and Argentina right-back Nahuel Molina, rather than going for Ronaldo. Despite all of this, one cannot totally rule out Ronaldo's chances of shifting to Madrid as his agent Jorge Mendes is believed to have strong relations with the club president Gil Marin.

As Ronaldo's transfer saga continues to find twists and turns with each passing day, Man United have maintained that the star striker is not up for sale. Thus, only time will tell where Ronaldo is headed -- if at all he exits Man United.

Atletico Madrid back out from signing Ronaldo from Man United due to financial constraints: Report

AC Milan midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko has broken his silence after being held at gunpoint by the Italian police while driving on the streets of Milan earlier this month. In what was a case of mistaken identity, Bakayoko's car was stopped in downtown Milan and he was asked to get out of the vehicle before being searched by a group of police officers.

He was pulled out of his car at gunpoint while two officers stood pointing guns towards his vehicle with a couple of his friends inside. Bakayoko was mistaken for a shooting suspect as a shooting incident had taken place in the area hours before, as per the Milan Police and Bakyoko's appearance matched that of the description of the suspect with them.

A video of the incident which took place on July 3 went viral on social media earlier this week after being shared by an Italian reporter on Twitter. In the video, the AC Milan midfielder can be seen standing with his hands up as a police officer checks his pockets and places his stuff on top of a patrol car.

It was only after another police officer informed the one conducting the check on Bakayoko that he was a footballer, who played for the local club AC Milan that the French midfielder was let go of as the matter de-escalated. Bakayoko has now opened up on the incident for the first time and slammed the Milan Police for the manner in which he was held at gunpoint.
