Grace Geyoro scored a first-half hat-trick as France made a dream start to the women`s European Championship by thrashing Italy 5-1 in Group D at Rotherham`s New York Stadium on Sunday. Italy were 5-0 down at the break on a warm evening in South Yorkshire as France turned on the style with the highest ever first-half score at a women`s Euros.

Midfielder Geyoro put Les Bleues ahead from close range in the ninth minute and Marie-Antoinette Katoto made it 2-0 three minutes later after goalkeeper Laura Giuliani palmed it straight to her. The goal was Paris St Germain forward Katoto`s 26th in 31 international appearances and she could have had another when she hit the post in the 16th as a confident France dominated possession on their way to topping the group.

France, who went through their qualifying group without conceding a goal but have yet to win a major women`s tournament, were 3-0 up in the 38th when Delphine Cascarino lashed in a powerful strike.

Geyoro, making her 50th appearance for France, bagged her second in the 40th by beating two defenders and the goalkeeper before rolling the ball into an empty net and punching the corner flag with the goal upheld by VAR.

She then made Euros history with her hat-trick just before the halftime whistle, with France going off the boil in the second half and bringing on substitutes for all their goalscorers.

"We couldn`t imagine losing like this but let`s give France credit as well," said Italy coach Milena Bertolini.

"I told my players to come onto the pitch in the second half as if the game was 0-0. They did just that and it was not easy after that first half."

Italy had risked being reduced to 10 players in the 64th when captain Sara Gama was shown a straight red for a high tackle on Geyoro, reduced to a yellow after a lengthy VAR review.

Substitute Martina Piemonte grabbed a consolation goal with a looping 76th minute header and Italy could have had a late second when Selma Bacha cleared off the line in stoppage time with goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin beaten. The win was France`s biggest in a women`s Euro finals.

Former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has agreed terms to become the manager of Major League Soccer side DC United, multiple media outlets reported. Rooney, who played for DC United between 2018-19, stepped down as manager of Derby County last month, ending a turbulent 17-month spell during which the English club were marred by financial trouble and relegated to the third tier.

Rooney had been in talks with the U.S. club for weeks, according to the reports on Sunday, and will replace interim coach Chad Ashton, who took charge after the departure of Hernan Losada in April. ESPN reported that Rooney would join up with the club once the final details were worked out and he had received a work visa.

Netherlands midfielder Jill Roord cancelled out Jonna Andersson`s opener for Sweden as the defending champions salvaged a 1-1 draw in their heavyweight Group C clash at the women`s European Championship on Saturday.

Both teams started cautiously and a dull first half at Bramall Lane sprung to life when Sweden took a deserved lead in the 36th minute through Andersson who smashed home from close range following some excellent wing play from Kosovare Asllani.

Lina Hurtig almost got a second with a diving header minutes later before Danielle van de Donk blazed over for the Dutch, capping a miserable half in which they took off goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal and defender Aniek Nouwen due to injury.

Netherlands manager Mark Parsons told reporters that both players had been taken to hospital but he was not sure of the extent of the injuries.

"We remained calm. How often do you lose your captain and central defender in the first half?" he said.

"We are concerned about their situation, but their replacements (keeper Daphne van Domselaar and Marisa Olislagers) did very well. I`m proud of how we fought back. In the end it`s a shame we didn`t win."

Netherlands, watched by their men`s team`s head coach Louis van Gaal, flew out of the traps after the break and hit back through Roord in the 52nd minute after she was brilliantly set up by Arsenal forward Vivianne Miedema.

Miedema grew into the game as the half wore on, driving at the Swedish defence with real menace, and nearly played in Roord for the winner but the Wolfsburg player was denied by a superbly timed tackle from Magdalena Eriksson.

Netherlands and Sweden share spoils in Women's Euro 2022 group opener

Germany`s bid to win a record ninth European Championship got off to an emphatic start as they beat Denmark 4-0 in their Group B opener on Friday. An early strike from Lina Magull and second-half goals from Lea Schuller, Lena Lattwein and Alexandra Popp at the Brentford Community Stadium ensured Germany kept their record intact of never losing an opening match in the Euros.

It was sweet revenge for the Germans who lost 2-1 to Denmark in the quarter-finals of the previous tournament in 2017. The Danes went on to finish as runners-up that year, but could not cope with a rampant Germany this time round.

Germany rattled the woodwork three times in the opening 15 minutes but finally made the breakthrough in the 21st when Magull charged down defender Stine Pedersen and won the ball to go through on goal and rifle it past goalkeeper Lene Christiansen.

Martina Voss Tecklenburg`s side could have extended their lead before halftime but were either thwarted by Christiansen or their own profligacy. Christiansen did well to deny Magull early in the second half when she tipped wide a long-range effort from the midfielder. However, from the resulting corner Schuller rose highest to meet Magull`s cross and head in Germany`s second.

Denmark hardly threatened and conceded a third in the 78th minute when substitute Lattwein fired in a knockdown from midfielder Lena Oberdorf.

Another substitute Popp, who missed the 2017 tournament through injury, put a gloss on the scoreline late on with her 54th goal for her country, while Denmark had 19-year-old Kathrine Moller Kuhl sent off right at the end for a second booking.

"We played an outstanding game. We were at it right away and created plenty of scoring chances that we didn`t really take advantage of in the first half. We were incredibly dominant and aggressive. It was a great team effort by everyone involved," Voss Tecklenburg said.

A large contingent of the 15,746 spectators in attendance were Denmark fans who made their voices heard throughout but coach Lars Sondergaard was disappointed his side could not do the support justice.

"The support was fantastic, and the setting was insane – also after the game. What disappoints us the most is that we couldn`t perform better, and I hope we can do that in the remaining last two games in the group," he said.

Lionel Messi threatens to leave PSG if French club signs Cristiano Ronaldo from Man Utd: Report

A lot is being said and written about Cristiano Ronaldo's move from Manchester United in this Premier League. Thus, with Ronaldo almost certain to shift base from the Red Devils, many are also pinning their hopes on Lionel Messi to exit Paris Saint-Germain and possibly make an entry into the Premier League.

While a lot of Messi's ardent fans are eager to see him in the Premier League, former Manchester City defender Danny Mills doesn't think that such a move is practical in the current scenario. In this regard, he said on talkSport, "Would you take Lionel Messi? He's the greatest footballer I've ever seen, I didn't see [Johan] Cruyff live or [Diego] Maradona. Messi is the best footballer that I've ever seen. I know Ronaldo's numbers are a little better and he's more of a big-game player."

"In terms of being a footballer, Messi is the greatest, but would you take Messi in your team now? Probably not. "I don't think they [the Premier League's top six] would take him. Liverpool? No. Man City? No. Tottenham? No. I don't think they would," he added.

Last year when Messi had become a free agent, many reports had suggested that he had shown interest to join the Man City club, however, he eventuallyb went to PSG. In his maiden season for the French club, the 35-year-old only managed to score 11 goals in what was an under-par run for the Argentinan captain. Recent reports have claimed that PSG is keen on revamping their squad around superstar Kylian Mbappe and the club can release Neymar and Messi. However, there is no official confirmation regarding this.

Thus, Messi would hope to turn the tides and return to his usual best in his second season for PSG, if he remains a part of the club.

I know Ronaldo's numbers are a little better and he's more of a big-game player." "In terms of being a footballer, Messi is the greatest, but would you take Messi in your team now? Probably not. "I don't think they [the Premier League's top six] would take him. Liverpool? No. Man City? No. Tottenham? No. I don't think they would," he added.

Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter and France footballing legend Michel Platini were both cleared of corruption charges by a Swiss court on Friday. Blatter, who led FIFA for 17 years, was cleared of fraud by the Federal Criminal Court in the southern city of Bellinzona.

Platini, a former France national team captain and manager, was also acquitted of fraud. The two, once among the most powerful figures in global soccer, had denied the charges against them. On Friday they joked and shook hands before the judgment and looked relieved as the verdict was read out.
Platini described his joy after the acquittal, saying the allegations had turned him from a legend of world soccer to a "devil".

"I want to express my happiness for all my loved ones that justice has finally been done after seven years of lies and manipulation," Platini said in a statement. "The truth has come to light during this trial," he added. "I kept saying it: my fight is a fight against injustice. I won a first game."

Prosecutors had accused Blatter, a Swiss who led global soccer body FIFA for 17 years, and Platini of unlawfully arranging for FIFA to pay the Frenchman two million Swiss francs ($2.06 million) in 2011. The case meant Blatter ended his reign as FIFA president in disgrace and it wrecked Platini`s hopes of succeeding him after he was banned from football when the affair came to light.

Blatter, 86, had said the two-million franc payment followed a "gentlemen`s agreement" between the pair when he asked Platini to be his technical adviser in 1998. Platini, 67, worked as a consultant between 1998 and 2002 with an annual salary of 300,000 Swiss francs -- the most FIFA could afford because of money troubles the organisation had at the time, Blatter has told the court.

The rest of Platini`s one million per year salary was to be settled at a later date, Blatter said. The senior judge, Josephine Contu Albrizio, said a verbal agreement between Blatter and Platini seemed credible, as did the Frenchman`s seeing his market value at 1 million per year due to his status in the game.
It also seemed implausible that Platini would have worked only on the basis of written contract that paid him such a paltry sum, the judge told the court.

It was also credible that Platini sought the extra money only in 2010 as he did not need the money immediately. The payment emerged following a huge investigation launched by the U.S. Department of Justice into bribery, fraud and money-laundering at FIFA in 2015, which triggered Blatter`s resignation.
Both officials were banned in 2015 from soccer for eight years over the payment, although their bans were later reduced.

Platini, who also lost his job as UEFA president following the ban, said the affair was a deliberate attempt to thwart his attempt to become FIFA president in 2015. Platini`s former general secretary at UEFA, Gianni Infantino, entered the FIFA race and won the election in 2016.

All eyes are now on the forthcoming FIFA World Cup, to be held in Qatar later this year. Ahead of the mega event, which will be the first to be played in a Muslim country, Qatar's World Cup stadiums are set to be alcohol-free with beer sales outside arenas only allowed prior to and after the conclusion of some matches, a source with knowledge of plans for the football tournament revealed.

Thus, the alcohol ban can present a unique challenge for the organisers of the showpiece event as often fans can be seen enjoying their drinks sponsored by global brewing brands in such tournaments.

"At stadiums, the plans are still being finalised, but the current discussion is to allow fans to have beer upon arrival and when leaving stadium, but beer won't be served during the match or inside the stadium bowl," the source told Reuters.

Football's relationship with booze has long become a lot more tricky in recent times. For the unversed, in the lead up to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Brazil had to lift a ban on alcohol at stadiums owing to pressure from governing body FIFA.

There were dark clouds hovering over the availability of alcohols at this year's competition ever since the Gulf Arab state won the hosting rights in 2010. Nonetheless, it is believed that the fans will be able to buy beer during restricted times in certain parts of the main FIFA fan zone in the Al Bidda park in Doha, the Qatari capital. "Unlike previous World Cup fan zones, beer won't be served all day long, but at restricted times," the source added.

A spokesperson for the organisers -- Qatar's Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy -- has pointed out that together with FIFA they will reveal the plans regarding alcohol availability "in due course".

The women`s European Championship got under way with pre-game fireworks for a tournament record crowd but there was little sparkle from hosts England as they laboured to a 1-0 win over Austria at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

The crowd of 68,871 was the largest for a European Championship game, beating the previous best of 41,301 from the Euro 2013 final in Sweden, and the enthusiasm of the heavily youthful and noisy supporters fired England to a lively start.

Beth Mead grabbed the decisive goal in the 16th minute for the Lionesses - dinking the ball over Austria goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger after being picked out by Fran Kirby.

Although Austria defender Carina Wenninger valiantly attempted to clear off the line, with her effort striking the bar and flying away from goal, the ball was ruled to have crossed the line.

It was Mead`s 15th goal in as many games for her country and the Lionesses` alltime top scorer Ellen White went close to adding a second, ten minutes later, flashing a header from a Lauren Hemp cross just wide.

It felt like England could quickly establish a comfortable lead with Georgia Stanway finding space to create and Kirby delivering some clever passes on the left.

But the Austrians settled into a compact shape and occasionally threatened on the break while England gradually ran out of their early burst of inspiration.

Sarina Wiegman`s team struggled to create clear-cut chances and lacked sharpness in attack with the Dutch coach making a triple substitution in the 64th minute in an attempt to add some spice.

Austria were on the back foot for much of the game but came close to a leveller in the 78th -- England goalkeeper Mary Earps doing well to keep out a curling effort from Barbara Dunst.

"It was the first game of the tournament," said Wiegman, who won the tournament as Netherlands coach in 2017.

"It`s so important to win the game to have a good start. I think we showed different phases in this game, some good and some not-so-good," she added.

Mead was more effusive after lapping up the singing of the crowd at the end of the game.

"Beyond words. What an amazing night to start the tournament with a win. I`m really happy to get a goal for the team," she told the BBC.

England`s other Group A rivals, Northern Ireland and Norway will face each other on Thursday in Southampton.

Austria coach Irene Fuhrmann was pleased with the way her team approached the game.

"I am very proud of our performance and the way we played. But at the end of the day we are leaving with zero points and that is a big disappointment," she said.

"In the second half we showed a good reaction offensively, we showed courage and created a few chances but of course England dominated and deserved the win."

Women's Euro 2022: England make winning start in front of record crowd

Cristiano Ronaldo's stint at Manchester United is all set to come to an abrupt end as the Portuguese superstar is reportedly looking to leave the club this summer. Ronaldo reportedly wants to join a club competing in the Champions League next season and add to his illustrious trophy cabinet as he feels United are not yet in a position to challenge for trophies next season after enduring a horrible campaign last season.

Ronaldo is also reportedly not happy with United's transfer business so far in the ongoing summer window and wants the club to show more ambition amid rivals Manchester City and Liverpool strengthening their already strong squads. Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes is already looking for potential clubs who can sign the Portuguese ahead of the next season.

Mendes had reportedly met Chelsea's new owner Todd Boehly recently where a potential move for Ronaldo was discussed. The Portuguese agent also met with high-profile officials at FC Barcelona to discuss the future of several players, including Ronaldo. Barcelona have been linked with a move for Ronaldo despite the Portuguese being a bonafide legend of arch-rivals Real Madrid.

FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta was asked about the possibility of signing Ronaldo and his talks with Mendes about the Portuguese star in their recent meeting during the press conference to unveil the signing of midfielder Franck Kessie. Mendes said he would not want to speak much as Ronaldo is still a United player but it was interesting for him to know that the legendary forward is in the market this summer.

"I had dinner on Monday with Jorge Mendes and we talked about the market in general. Cristiano? I'm not going to talk about the players who came out of the meeting, but it's always interesting to know how some names are on the market," said Mendes at the presser.

"I'm not going to talk about players in one way or another, it could be misunderstood. It doesn't contribute anything to the interests of Barca. We have to respect the players who have contracts with other teams," he added.

Can Cristiano Ronaldo join FC Barcelona? Club president Joan Laporta responds to transfer speculations

Ivory Coast midfielder Franck Kessie said the opportunity of playing under the guidance of manager Xavi Hernandez was crucial in his decision to join Barcelona on a free transfer after leaving AC Milan.

"When a great coach like him calls you, you see that all your efforts are worth it," Kessie told a news conference on Wednesday after signing a contract until June 2026.

"I am very happy to be part of this family and this great club. I really want to meet my teammates and coaching staff and start working right away."

The 25-year-old left AC Milan at the end of his contract in June after helping the Italian club to win their first Serie A title in 11 years last season. He has 58 caps for Ivory Coast.

Kessie, who can contribute in attack and defence as a box-to-box midfielder, said he did not have a preferred position on the pitch and was open to helping his team wherever his coach needed.

"I am at Xavi`s disposal, he will be the one who will decide my position here at Barca. I will work to offer my best version wherever I am. When a player starts playing, he never gets worse. We are always trying to improve," Kessie said.

Franck Kessie says playing for Xavi was key factor in decision to join FC Barcelona

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has triggered a massive controversy after he recently liked an Instagram post about Cristiano Ronaldo wanting to leave the club due to a wage cut. Ronaldo has already expressed his desire to leave Manchester United this summer over the club's lack of ambition in the transfer market, and his willingness to spend the remaining few years of his career at a top club competing in the Champions League.

Amid reports that Ronaldo is looking for a move away from the club, Maguire's Instagram activity has added more fuel to the fire. The post liked by Maguire was about recent reports claiming Ronaldo is unhappy over Manchester United players set to be handed a 25% pay cut as a result of the club failing to qualify for the Champions League.

A report in the Manchester Evening News claimed that the United players will have to take a wage cut of 25% after the club finished sixth in the Premier League last season to miss out on a spot in the Champions League. The news was reported on Instagram by SPORTbible and was liked by United captain Maguire's official account.

There were reports last season that not all was well between Ronaldo and captain Maguire, as the Portuguese superstar was against the idea of the England defender leading the team. Ronaldo made his return to United from Juventus last year and was one of the best players for the club, scoring 24 goals across all competitions.

However, Ronaldo, in what has been called a 'highly unprofessional move' by several United fans, has failed to turn up at the club's ongoing pre-season amid reports that he wants to leave the club this summer for a team competing in the Champions League.

Paris St Germain announced Christophe Galtier as their new manager on Tuesday, shortly after the Ligue 1 champions parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino. Galtier joins PSG on a two-year contract after leaving Nice last month, having guided them to a runners-up finish in the French Cup and fifth place in Ligue 1 last season.

The 55-year-old Frenchman joined Nice in 2021 after leading Lille to their first Ligue 1 title since 2011 in the previous campaign. Before joining Lille, Galtier spent eight seasons at Saint Etienne, where he won the French Cup in 2012-2013.

"When you`re here (at the Parc des Princes) you feel the expectations," said Galtier, who is PSG`s first French coach since Laurent Blanc in 2013-16.

"I appreciate the responsibility that I have so that PSG can have a great season. I have been getting ready for it. If I have accepted his job it is because I am capable of it. But we have to do it all together."

At PSG, Galtier will be re-united with Luis Campos, the club`s newly-appointed football advisor, with the pair having worked together at Lille. Galtier`s appointment comes after PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi put an end to speculation surrounding France great Zinedine Zidane, dismissing reports that PSG had been in talks with the 1998 World Cup winner about becoming their new boss.

Cristiano Ronaldo's replacement? Manchester United eye Paulo Dybala to replace Portuguese superstar

Chelsea are reportedly plotting a shock move for Cristiano Ronaldo, who has already expressed his desire to leave Manchester United this summer. The Manchester United star is reportedly not happy with the United's transfer business so far this summer and has told the club he wants to leave if a suitable offer is made for him. Ronaldo had rejoined Manchester United from Juventus last year and was the club's top-scorer in the Premier League last season.

Earlier, this week, a report in Times had claimed Ronaldo has told United he is on his way out as he wants to spend the rest of his career competing in the Champions League which the Red Devils cannot offer next season. The 37-year-old Portuguese forward, who is regarded as one of the greatest of all time, has never played in the Europa League in his career.

United, who finished a disappointing sixth in the Premier League last season, are out of the Champions League and will play in the Europa League next season. Amid his desire to leave the club, Chelsea are considering making a shock move for the Manchester United icon.

As per a report in The Athletic, Chelsea are considering a move for Ronaldo and the club's new owner Todd Boehly has been in touch with Jorge Mendes, who is the agent of the Portuguese forward. As per the report, Boehly had met Mendes to discuss a potential move for Ronaldo but United have maintained they won't sanction a move for the superstar forward.

The report further adds that the Chelsea owner is keen on the move but it remains to be seen if Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel will approve the transfer for the 37-year-old. While United will be in the Europa League next season, Chelsea will play in the Champions League and are one of the few clubs in the world that can afford Ronaldo's huge wages.

Ronaldo scored 18 goals in the Premier League for Manchester United last season to finish as the club's top-scorer in the league while also bagging six goals in the Champions League. However, despite his goal-scoring exploits, United failed to finish inside the top four in the Premier League and endured a horrendous season.

Manchester United are set to sign Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen on a free transfer after agreeing a three-year deal with him. Eriksen, who played for Brentford in the second half of last season, is currently a free agent after his contract at the club expired following the conclusion of the season. Eriksen has reportedly given his nod to join United and be part of new manager Erik Ten Hag's project at Old Trafford.

As per Sky Sports, Manchester United are set to offer a three-year deal to Eriksen after the midfielder agreed in principle to sign for the club. The 30-year-old will have to agree personal terms with the Red Devils before undergoing a medical to finalise his move.

Eriksen had suffered a cradiac arrest on the pitch while playing for Denmark during the Euro 2020. He was part of the Inter Milan squad back then but was later released by the Italian club as both parties decided to part ways mutually. Eriksen had to leave Inter as he was fitted an ICD (implantable cardio defibrillator) following his cardiac arrest during Euro 2020 last year and the rules in Italian football bar professional footballers to compete with such equipment.

Eriksen enjoyed a great comeback and was one of the most influential midfielders in the second of the Premier League last season.

He was among the top priorities of Ten Hag, who worked with the Denmark international when he trained with Ajax as part of his return to football post his cardiac arrest. Ten Hag has been focused on strengthening United's midfield ahead of the start of the new season after the departures of the likes of Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic.

Manchester United are yet to make their first signing in the ongoing transfer window despite enduring a horrific campaign last season where they failed to finish in the top four in the Premier League and also failed to make it to the knockout stages of the Champions League. United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their manager last season before replacing him with Ralf Rangnick on an interim basis. The club also parted ways with Rangnick at the end of the season after the arrival of their new manager Erik Ten Hag.

While United were expected to make quick moves in the market and strengthen their squad ahead of the new season, they are yet to sign a player despite having let go of a number of stars. While the lack of activity in the transfer market has been a cause of concern for fans, United have been handed a fresh blow ahead of the start of the season.

Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly told the club he wants to leave this summer amid reports that he wants Manchester United to show more ambition in the transfer market after their poor campaign last season. Ronaldo had joined United from Juventus last season and was one of the best players for the club.

However, as per a report in The Times, Ronaldo is considering his future at the club and has informed United that he wants to leave if the club receive a 'satisfactory' offer for him this summer. The report further claims that Ronaldo wants to spend the rest of his career at a club competing in the Champions League and add more trophies to his illustrious cabinet.

United will be competing in the Europa League this season after missing out on a spot in the Champions League last season and the 37-year-old has never played in the Europa League in his career so far. The report also adds that Ronaldo believes he still has '3-4 years left in him at the highest level' despite being 37 at present.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has immense respect for Manchester United's staff but wants to secure a transfer away from the club this summer, as per the report. Ronaldo scored 18 goals in the Premier League and 6 goals in the Champions League for United last season despite the club's struggles on and off the pitch.

If the reports are true and Ronaldo decides to leave the club ahead of the new season, it will become difficult for Ten Hag to replace the Portuguese icon with an equally effective striker. United were reportedly in the race to sign Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez earlier this summer before he decided to join rivals Liverpool from Portuguese club Benfica.

United are heavily reliant on Ronaldo up front this season with Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford among the other two options to lead the attack. United will desperately need a striker in case Ronaldo decides to leave the club in search of a fresh challenge.

'Time for me to leave': Cristiano Ronaldo tells Manchester United he wants to leave this summer - Report

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has taken a dig at arch-rivals Liverpool after the club extended Mohammed Salah's contract, offering him a new three-year contract with a staggering pay rise. Salah will become the highest-paid player in Liverpool's history after penning a new three-year deal with a salary of reportedly more than £350,000 per week.

The 30-year-old has been one of Liverpool's best players since joining the club from Italian Club AS Roma in 2017. He has been scoring goals consistently and is already among the all-time top-scorers for Liverpool. Salah was in talks with Liverpool for several months as his contract was nearing its end.

However, the Egyptian was demanding a huge pay rise which made it difficult for Liverpool to decide on extending his contract. His previous contract was set to expire next year but Salah has now penned a deal which will keep him at Liverpool till 2025 making him the highest-earning player in their squad at present.

Reacting to Salah's contract extension at Liverpool, Manchester United legend Neville suggested the star forward had 'played' the club and hinted that Salah, who had initially refused to sign a contract extension, did so to get a lucrative contract from the club.

Salah was reportedly holidaying in Mykonos amid the ongoing break and the Liverpool executives flew to the island in Greece to negotiate the contract extension with the star forward. Liverpool eventually had to bow down to Salah's demands despite their strict wage structure and fears that his new contract might propel other top players in the team to demand similar wages.

However, Liverpool had little choice when it came to extending Salah's contract considering they have already let go of Sadio Mane, who was one of the club's best forwards along with the Egyptian. Lionel Messi's run at the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) could end soon. Messi, who shifted to PSG from Barcelona last year, could also join good friend and striker Neymar out of the club in the summer, as per reports. The Brazilian has reportedly been put up for sale by the French club's bosses.

According to Spanish journalist Pedro Morata (via PSG Talk), the club's new sporting management have completely different ideas regarding how football should be played in the next season. After having put Neymar up for sale, Luis Campos and Antero Henrique could also show the door to the 35-year-old Messi.

Messi's maiden season with the PSG also didn't turn out to be a memorable one. He managed only 11 goals across all competitions. While many believe he wasn't used as per his strengths by former manager Mauricio Pochettino, the Argentine's inconsistent run also didn't help his case.

PSG's new bosses reportedly want to revamp the side around superstar Kylian Mbappe. The Frenchman was set to leave the club, however, he made a last-minute U-turn to sign a new contract with the Ligue 1 champions. Thus, the owners are keen to let go of some other marquee players -- such as Neymar and Messi -- and build a squad around Mbappe, complementing his style of play.

It will be interesting to see if Messi actually leaves the club and joins some other team. Last year, talks were rife that the superstar footballer was set to join Manchester City, however, he surprised one and all and joined the PSG. Nonetheless, he hasn't been at his usual best for the French club.

'He has to go to Chelsea': Thiago Silva wants reunion with Neymar amid uncertainity over his PSG future

Manchester United are reportedly close to agreeing a deal with FC Barcelona to sign Dutch midfielder Frenkie De Jong. De Jong is one of the key targets this summer for United's new manager Erik Ten Hag, who had worked with the midfielder during his stint at Ajax. Ten Hag had an instrumental role to play in De Jong's rise at Ajax and believes he can spearhead his rebuild project at Manchester United.

Manchester United endured a disappointing campaign in the Premier League last season as they missed out on a spot in the top four and were far from challenging arch-rivals Manchester City and Liverpool, who finished top two respectively. United are out of the Champions League next season and will be plying their trade in the Europa League.

With Ten Hag's arrival as the permanent coach, the Red Devils are keen on strengthening their squad ahead of the new season and are looking to reinforce their midfield. De Jong is United's top target after the departures of midfielders Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic, who both left the club as free agents at the end of their contracts.

As per Sky Sports, Manchester United have a 'broad agreement' on De Jong's transfer fee which is expected to be around 65 million euros (around USD 69 million) plus performance-related add-ons. The report claims that 'finer details' of the deal are yet to be finalised but both United and Barcelona are confident of closing the deal soon.

De Jong had joined FC Barcelona from his former club Ajax in 2019 and has since made 98 appearances for the club, including 46 last season. He is one of the most talented midfielders in the world at present and was expected to have a longer career at Barcelona but is being let go by the Catalan club reportedly due to financial constraints.
