Donald Trump has ordered an end to Kamala Harris’ Secret Service protection, just weeks before the former vice president launches her new memoir and high-profile book tour. In a letter dated Thursday and addressed to the Secretary of Homeland Security, Trump wrote, “You are hereby authorised to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorised by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”Also read: Did Trump drive India and China closer? US special envoy Steve Witkoff met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on 6 August. Soon after, he told Donald Trump that Putin was ready to make big concessions in Ukraine, including pulling back from the partially occupied Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, Reuters reported. Donald Trump has made a surprise U-turn on Taylor Swift, calling her a "terrific person" after months of bashing the singer over her support for Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. The US president once declared, "I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!" on Truth Social and has repeatedly mocked her in rants since. Just weeks ago, he even claimed credit for what he claimed was a drop in her popularity, bragging that she had been "booed out of the Super Bowl." However, on Tuesday (Aug 28), when Swift announced her engagement to NFL star Travis Kelce, Trump struck a strikingly different tone.
What did Trump say about Taylor Swift
Asked during a cabinet meeting about what one reporter called the "biggest pop culture news of the year," Trump surprised even Vice President JD Vance, who looked braced for another tirade and said, "Well I wish them a lot of luck". He added that he thinks "he's a great player and he's a great guy and I think that she's a terrific person...So I wish them a lot of luck." The comments drew confused laughter from those in the room.Swift revealed her engagement in an Instagram post on Tuesday with the caption: “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” alongside photos of Kelce proposing. Also read | Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce engaged - every picture from their romantic proposal
Trump changes tune on Swift?
The latest statement is a sharp reversal for Trump, who earlier gloated that his attacks had made megastar Taylor Swift "no longer hot." She was booed out of the Super Bowl and became, NO LONGER HOT."

Still, it must be acknowledged that this isn't the first time the 79-year-old has shown flashes of goodwill toward the couple. He added that he thinks "he's a great player and he's a great guy and I think that she's a terrific person...So I wish them a lot of luck." The comments drew confused laughter from those in the room. Swift revealed her engagement in an Instagram post on Tuesday with the caption: “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” alongside photos of Kelce proposing. The latest statement is a sharp reversal for Trump, who earlier gloated that his attacks had made megastar Taylor Swift "no longer hot." In a signature bizarre rant on Truth Social, 79-year-old Trump, at the time wrote, "Ever since I alerted the world as to what she was by saying on TRUTH that I can’t stand her (HATE!). She was booed out of the Super Bowl and became, NO LONGER HOT."

What's going on between Donald Trump and Taylor Swift? The US President has a history of trashing the singer and declaring his 'HATE" for her. So why is he now calling her a "terrific person" and wishing her and her fiancé Travis Kelce "a lot of luck"? Scroll on to find out.

US President Donald Trump's administration has threatened to pull the federal funding to three states over language compliance. The Department of Transportation said on Tuesday (August 26) that it will stop funding California, New Mexico, and Washington if the states don’t comply with a requirement of English language proficiency for all commercial motor vehicle drivers. These states have 30 days to comply with the decision, or the department will hold “up to 100%” of the state’s funding from the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program. The available government data shows that California got over $30 million in federal funding, New Mexico received over $6 million, and Washington received over $9 million. US President Donald Trump on Monday (Aug 25) said he has fired Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, posting a letter in which he told Cook that he was removing her from her position "effective immediately". The action, as per reports, is based on allegations by a Trump loyalist that the Fed governor had obtained mortgages on two homes while allegedly claiming they were her primary homes. The allegations have not been proved, and just last week, after they came to light, Cook said she had no "intention of being bullied" into stepping down. Responding to Trump's letter, Cook said Trump "has no authority" to fire her and that she would continue to "carry out my duties to help the American economy as I have been doing since 2022."
What did Cook say about her firing?
In a statement shared by her attorneys with CNN on Monday night, Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook said, "President Trump purported to fire me ‘for cause’ when no cause exists under the law, and he has no authority to do so". "I will not resign. I will continue to carry out my duties to help the American economy as I have been doing since 2022," added the statement. Also read | Trump fires Biden appointee Fed Governor Lisa Cook; claims 'sufficient cause' of mortgage fraud. However, reports suggest that Cook's ignoring Trump's demands for lower interest rates could be behind the move. Furthermore, as per the Guardian, Cook's — a Joe Biden appointment — removal would allow Trump to bring in a replacement that would essentially give him more control of the federal policy.

This is the latest retaliatory measure taken by Trump against his political enemies since returning to the White House. While Cook is not a politician, she is a senior Fed policymaker who has repeatedly ignored Trump's calls for rate cuts.
What are the mortgage fraud allegations against Cook?
The attack on Cook was led by Trump loyalist Bill Pulte, who was appointed by the POTUS to lead the US Federal Housing Finance Agency. He alleged that the federal officer had claimed two different properties as her primary residences while obtaining mortgages in 2021. On X, Pulte wrote, "How can this woman be in charge of interest rates if she is allegedly lying to help her own interest rates?" while referring the case to the Department of Justice for investigation.Following this, on Wednesday, Trump on his social media account demanded that Cook "must resign, now!!!". This is the first instance of a president firing a central bank governor in the American central bank's 111-year history. But the real question is: Can Trump fire her? This has been interpreted by courts as requiring sufficient proof of wrongdoing, such as neglect of duty or malfeasance. However, it must be noted that the allegations against Cook are just that "allegations" which remain unproven. The Federal Reserve is an independent agency, and in the Supreme Court case Humphrey's Executor v. United States (1935), it was established that the President's power to remove officials is not unlimited. With Cook rejecting the firing, the case is expected to lead to a legal challenge that may go to the Supreme Court.https://www.wionews.com/videos/donald-trump-fires-biden-appointed-fed-governor-lisa-cook-over-fraud-accusations-1756184377055/embed

US President Donald Trump on Monday (Aug 25) shared on Truth Social a letter he has sent to Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, firing her. In what marks the latest escalation in Trump's attack on the central bank's independence, the POTUS, in his letter, told Cook he was removing her from her position "effective immediately". Trump loyalist once dubbed 'snake' by Musk, to be US envoy to India. All you need to know about him
Why would multiple mortgages constitute mortgage fraud?
While having mortgages is not fraud, falsely claiming multiple houses as "primary residences" could be considered mortgage fraud. This is because lenders offer more favourable terms, like lower interest rates and smaller down payments, on mortgages for a borrower's primary residence. The reasoning is that a borrower is much less likely to default on a loan for the home they live in, as opposed to a second home or an investment property.

Trump, in a move seen as an escalation of his efforts to control the central bank, has fired Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. Trump cited allegations of mortgage fraud against Cook, which she has denied.

United States Vice President JD Vance has landed in trouble after he rewrote history while trying to defend US President Donald Trump's strategy to end the Ukraine War. Jeremy Cherson, the director of communications for the Bail Project, told The Guardian that Trump’s executive order would deepen inequities and waste taxpayer dollars. “The data is clear that bail reform has not led to increased crime,” he said, adding, “While the president is right that the current system is broken, he is wrong about the solution.” Also read: 'Why are stupid people unhappy?': Trump insists he ‘paid zero’ in $9bn Intel deal despite critics’ fury ‘Specialised units’ of National Guard Trump signed multiple executive orders on Monday (August 25), including the one under which the Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth will establish “specialised units” in the National Guard. Trump signs order for ‘specialised units’ of National Guard: Here’s what’s inside

After US President Donald Trump, now his former close ally, ex-DOGE chief Elon Musk's name has come up in the murky Jeffrey Epstein saga. The disgraced financier, sex trafficker's former girlfriend and associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, has now contradicted the world's richest man's claims that he didn't know her or Epstein. According to the long-awaited transcripts of bombshell taped interviews by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, released by the US Department of Justice on Friday (Aug 22), the disgraced socialist Ghislaine has revealed that she met Musk at a multi-day birthday bash for Google co-founder Sergey Brin.
What did Ghislaine Maxwell say about her and Epstein's links to Musk?
Ghislaine Maxwell told Deputy Attorney General Blanche that she "met him in — I don’t remember the year, but it’s going to be in 2010, ’11, something like that, I think, if my memory serves." She said that Musk was one of the 30 to 50 people who spent "three to four" days on a Caribbean island for the birthday celebration. "Mr. Musk was present for that," said Ghislaine.
Musk denies all ties with Ghislaine and Epstein
Ghislaine Maxwell also told Blanche that she later saw Musk at an Oscars event. This was probably a reference to the March 2014 Vanity Fair's Oscar Party, where Musk and Ghislaine were clicked together. In 2024, a Twitter (now X) user posted the photo, in reply to which Musk claimed, "Don’t know Ghislaine at all. She photobombed me once at a Vanity Fair party several years ago. Real question is why VF invited her in the first place".

However, Ghislaine also denied any knowledge of a deeper friendship between Musk and Epstein, but revealed that the sex trafficker was connected to Musk's brother. "[He knew] Mr Musk's brother as well," she said, adding "But I don't — my — like I said, my memory is not — it's not as good as I would like it to be."The revelation comes amid continued uproar over the Trump administration's failure to release the much-awaited Epstein files. Recently, after a very public falling out with Trump, Musk, in a now-deleted post on X, had claimed that the Republican's name appeared in the Epstein files.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents conducted court-authorised searches at former National Security Advisor John Bolton’s home in Maryland and his office in Washington, DC, as part of an ongoing national security investigation into his alleged mishandling of classified materials. Even though 245 may seem like a small figure, this number is double the number of people who applied for refugee status in all of 2024. As per the Canada immigration website, in 2024, from the United States, Canada received only 204 applications from people seeking a refugee status. The growing number of refugee applications represents the growing fear experienced by Americans in the face of Donald Trump's many aggressive policies on immigration, healthcare and LGBTQ+ rights. The report reveals that the same phenomenon of an increase in US citizens applying for refugee status in Canada, with the United States as their country of alleged persecution, was experienced during Trump's first stint in the White House. US defence officials have quietly restricted Ukraine from using American-supplied long-range missiles to strike targets inside Russia since late spring, suggests a report published on Saturday (Aug 23). The move is said to be part of a Trump administration effort to nudge Vladimir Putin toward peace talks. According to the Wall Street Journal, Washington has blocked Ukraine from using Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), which can hit targets over a hundred miles away. Here's all you need to know about it.
Who can give Ukraine the permission to use ATACMS?
As per the report, US's restrictions apply to the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), which can hit targets nearly 190 miles (305.78 km) away. According to two US officials, Ukraine tried to use the system at least once but was blocked under a special "review mechanism" created by Elbridge Colby, the Pentagon's undersecretary for policy. The process governs how US long-range weapons or those that make use of American intelligence and components can be used. The same restrictions also cover Britain's Storm Shadow cruise missiles, which rely on American targeting data. The review mechanism gives Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth final say on when — or if — ATACMS can be used. Also read | Who is Sergio Gor? National Guard troops deployed in Washington, DC, under President Donald Trump’s orders will now be allowed to carry their service-issued weapons, the Pentagon confirmed on Friday. The authorisation, signed by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, applies to members of Joint Task Force-DC, which includes the DC National Guard and troops from six other states. “The DC National Guard remains committed to safeguarding the District of Columbia and serving those who live, work, and visit the District,” the Pentagon said in a statement. Also read: 'Like oil and vinegar': Trump not sure if he can make Zelensky, Putin meet - Was his heavy diplomacy for vain?
What does the new order allow?
The decision gives Brig. Gen. Leland D. Blanchard II, acting commander of the DC National Guard, has the authority to make “force posture adjustments” in coordination with local police. Officials said firearms use will remain consistent with National Guard training and mission guidelines. Until now, troops had been patrolling without weapons, though they were issued body armour. It is still unclear whether Guard members will carry rifles or handguns, and whether they will be loaded.
Trump threatens full federal takeover
Around 2,000 National Guard members are already deployed in the capital, with more expected to arrive. Trump has hinted the operation could continue beyond 30 days. “We’re not playing games. We’re going to make it safe, and we’re going to then go on to other places. But we’re going to stay here for a while. We want to make this absolutely perfect. It’s our capital,” Trump said. On Friday, the president also warned that he could impose full federal control of the city.“Mayor Muriel Bowser must immediately stop giving false and highly inaccurate crime figures, or bad things will happen, including a complete and total Federal takeover of the City!” he posted on Truth Social.
Local pushback and political concerns
DC officials have questioned whether the deployment is necessary, pointing to falling crime figures in recent years. Trump, however, has openly dismissed those statistics and pushed for a stronger security presence. Military commanders, meanwhile, have sought to balance Trump’s desire for a crackdown with legal and operational constraints around using armed troops on domestic soil.
Hegseth’s message to the Guard
During a visit to the DC Armory on Thursday night, Hegseth reminded troops of his own past service in the National Guard, including during unrest in 2020 after the killing of George Floyd. “We can’t often say that we’ve almost literally been in your boots; and now we’re in position where we want to make sure we’re setting all of you up for success because the nation’s eyes are on you, every single one of you,” Hegseth said.

National Guard troops in Washington, DC, are now authorised to carry service-issued weapons under a new order. The decision allows adjusted force posture, though specifics on firearm type remain unclear.

A week after hosting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, US President Donald Trump appeared uncertain about arranging direct talks between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, describing the two as being “like oil and vinegar.” “We’re going to see if Putin and Zelensky will be working together,” Trump said. “They don’t get along too well, for obvious reasons, but we’ll see. And then we’ll see whether or not I would have to be there,” he added. Trump has been pressing for a meeting between the two leaders as part of his effort to end the Russia-Ukraine war. Why FBI raided home of Trump's ex- national security adviser
Who is John Bolton?
John Bolton served as Trump’s third national security adviser for 17 months before falling out with him over US policy on Iran, Afghanistan and North Korea. The Trump administration later attempted, unsuccessfully, to block the release of Bolton’s memoir, which it claimed contained classified material. Trump has also targeted Bolton directly since returning to office this year. On his first day back, he revoked the security clearances of more than 40 former intelligence officials, including Bolton, and later removed his government-provided security detail.

The FBI searched John Bolton’s home early Friday in a classified documents probe. Bolton was reportedly unaware. FBI director Kash Patel hinted at the operation, emphasising that no one is above the law.
