Responding to the South African president's comment, Trump, instead of taking offence, said, "If your country was offering the United States Air Force a plane, I would take it".Turning the diplomatic setting into a stage for contention, Trump alleged that genocide was being committed against white people in Ramaphosa's country."You do allow them to take land, and then when they take the land, they kill the white farmer, and when they kill the white farmer, nothing happens to them," Trump claimed. To back his claims, Trump even had his staff play a four-minute video, which he said showed Black South African politicians calling for the persecution of white people. Ramaphosa claimed that the politicians in the video belonged to the opposition.Trump also showed news clippings that were supposed to back his claims; however, one actually featured a photo from the Democratic Republic of Congo."Death, death, death. Horrible death," said Trump.Shocked initially, Ramaphosa remained calm as he disputed Trump's claims. Denying claims that the country confiscates land from white farmers under a land expropriation law signed in January that aims to redress the historical inequalities of apartheid rule."No, no, no, no...Nobody can take land," he said, insisting that most of the victims of South Africa's notoriously high crime rate were, in fact, Black people.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa met with Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday (May 21), calling for a "reset" in relations between the two countries. The meeting followed growing tensions, triggered in part by Trump’s controversial claims about the treatment of white farmers in South Africa.
Trump repeats controversial “genocide” remarks
During their talks, Trump said the US had received “tremendous complaints” about Africa, including South Africa. He repeated allegations that white farmers in the country are facing persecution and even used the term “genocide”.“We have many people that feel they’re being persecuted, and they’re coming to the United States,” Trump said. “Generally, they’re white farmers and they’re fleeing South Africa, and .... it’s a very sad thing to see. Ramaphosa requested the meeting to address the claims directly and try to mend relations, which have reached their lowest point since the end of apartheid in 1994.
Refugee debate surfaces during talks
Trump was also questioned about why some white South Africans were allowed to apply for refugee status in the US, even though the broader refugee programme remains on hold.In response, Trump said, “Don’t say we didn’t take them,” suggesting the US had accepted people who claimed to be fleeing persecution. He again pointed to illegal immigration across the southern border, repeating familiar themes about who is being let into the country.
Trump deflects with southern border rhetoric
When asked why Afrikaners might be treated differently to people from countries like Venezuela, Afghanistan or Haiti, Trump said, “They say there’s a lot of bad things going on in Africa and that’s what we’re going to be discussing today.”He denied that the US is being selective in who it accepts as refugees, and added, “Just look to the southern border.”
Trump claims US brought peace to Congo
During the meeting, Trump also claimed that the US had played a key role in resolving conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo, referencing Rwandan-backed rebel involvement.“I think we have done it, believe it or not,” he said, without giving further detail.
Relations at a critical point
Ramaphosa’s appeal for a “reset” signals Pretoria’s concern over the direction of US-South Africa relations. 'Bad things going on in Africa': Trump demands ‘explanation’ from South African prez on claims of white farmers facing ‘genocide’

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (May 20) unveiled key details about his plan for a "Golden Dome" missile shield system to protect America against attacks.Announcing the "Golden Dome" system, Trump said that during his campaign, he "promised the American people I would build a cutting-edge missile defence shield"."Today I am pleased to announce we have officially selected architecture for this state-of-the-art system."Here's everything we know about Trump's Golden Dome
What is the Golden Dome?
Trump's Golden Dome is a missile shield system. As per the US president, once fully constructed, it would protect the nation from missiles launched from space and land."Once fully constructed, the Golden Dome will be capable of intercepting missiles even if they are launched from other sides of the world, and even if they are launched from space," Trump said."This is very important for the success and even survival of our country," he added. The Republican leader said that the Golden Dome has more expansive goals, and would "deploy next-generation technologies across the land, sea and space, including space-based sensors and interceptors."Meanwhile, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said that the system would protect "the homeland from cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, hypersonic missiles, drones, whether they're conventional or nuclear."
When will the Golden Dome be launched, and how much will it cost?
The Golden Dome missile shield system, as per Trump's announcement, would cost a whopping $175 billion. However, as per the Congressional Budget Office estimates, the cost of the space-based interceptors could come to between $161 billion and $542 billion over 20 years. On Tuesday, Trump announced $25 billion in initial funding for the defence system. According to Tuesday's announcement, the anti-missile system should be operational in about three years.
What is the need for the Golden Dome?
As per an AFP report, the United States faces various missile threats from its adversaries. The 2022 Missile Defence Review especially warned of growing threats from Russia and China. While Beijing is quickly catching up to Washington in ballistic and hypersonic missile technology, Moscow, as per the document, has been modernising its intercontinental-range missile systems and developing advanced precision strike missiles. As per the report, the US also faces a growing threat from drones — which played a key role in the recent India-Pakistan tensions and the ongoing Ukraine war. China expresses serious concern over this. We urge the United States to abandon the development and deployment of a global missile defence system as soon as possible."Previously, Russia also slammed the concept and warned that it risked turning space into a battlefield.Golden Dome "explicitly provides for a significant strengthening of the arsenal for conducting combat operations in space," said the Kremlin in a statement.

Donald Trump's Golden Dome is a missile shield system. As per the US president, once fully constructed, it would protect the nation from missiles launched from space and land.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (May 20) unveiled key details about his plan for a "Golden Dome" missile shield system to protect America against attacks. Announcing the "Golden Dome" system, Trump said that during his campaign, he "promised the American people I would build a cutting-edge missile defence shield". "Today I am pleased to announce we have officially selected architecture for this state-of-the-art system." Here's everything we know about Trump's Golden Dome What is the Golden Dome? Trump's Golden Dome is a missile shield system. As per the US president, once fully constructed, it would protect the nation from missiles launched from space and land. "Once fully constructed, the Golden Dome will be capable of intercepting missiles even if they are launched from other sides of the world, and even if they are launched from space," Trump said. "This is very important for the success and even survival of our country," he added. The Republican leader said that the Golden Dome has more expansive goals, and would "deploy next-generation technologies across the land, sea and space, including space-based sensors and interceptors." Meanwhile, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said that the system would protect "the homeland from cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, hypersonic missiles, drones, whether they're conventional or nuclear." When will the Golden Dome be launched, and how much will it cost? US President Donald Trump’s flagship budget plan, dubbed the “big, beautiful” bill, faces stiff opposition from within his own party as Republicans remain deeply divided over its provisions. Despite Trump’s personal intervention on Capitol Hill on Tuesday to rally support, significant dissent persists ahead of a crucial House vote reportedly expected later this week.
What is the ‘big, beautiful’ bill?
The sprawling 1,116-page legislation aims to extend and expand the 2017 Trump tax cuts, eliminate taxes on tips and overtime, raise the SALT deduction cap from $10,000 to $30,000 for couples, and introduce new work requirements for Medicaid recipients. It also proposes rescinding green energy subsidies and increasing the child tax credit. The bill includes approximately $4.9 trillion in tax breaks, partially offset by $1.5 trillion in spending cuts over the next decade, according to Reuters.
Four major sticking points
Despite passing the committee stage, the legislation is caught in a tug-of-war between conservative hardliners demanding steeper cuts and moderates protecting their constituents’ interests. These are the four most contentious areas: 1. How deep should the cuts go? A central issue is how much to reduce federal spending. The bill’s $4.9 trillion in tax breaks—partly paid for by cutting healthcare and clean energy incentives. It has also alarmed fiscal conservatives who say the reductions don’t go far enough to tackle the US’s $36 trillion national debt. Texas Republican Chip Roy criticised the proposal, saying, “The bill does not yet meet the moment. Food assistance reforms raise humanitarian concerns The legislation also seeks major reforms to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programme (SNAP), which currently supports over 42 million Americans. Under the proposal, states would be required to fund 5 per cent of benefit costs and 75 per cent of administrative expenses or costs they currently do not bear. Work requirements for SNAP recipients would also be expanded, applying to individuals without dependents up to age 64 (currently capped at 54). Republicans argue this will reduce fraud and encourage employment, while Democrats claim it will push millions into food insecurity. Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin described the proposal as “a slap in the face” to struggling families, according to Bloomberg.
Trump’s push for unity amid party divisions
On Tuesday, Trump left the White House for Capitol Hill in an effort to mend fractured party support, calling the gathering “a meeting of love” with “great unity in that room” after addressing House Republicans, Reuters reported. Despite his assurances, division remains, especially over Medicaid and SALT deductions. Trump reportedly cautioned Congressman Lawler against pushing for a higher SALT cap, warning it could threaten GOP unity, Reuters added. The bill narrowly passed the House Budget Committee on Sunday with a 17-16 vote but still requires full House approval, expected on Wednesday or Thursday. With a narrow Republican majority and no Democratic support, the bill’s fate remains uncertain, Bloomberg reported. If it clears the House, the bill will head to the Senate, where further amendments are anticipated. Several Republican senators have already voiced concern over Medicaid cuts and the SALT deduction cap, Reuters reported. As the May 26 deadline approaches, President Trump is intensifying efforts to unify his party behind the bill, underscoring the need to prevent tax increases and reduce government spending, Reuters added.

The United States has formally added the B61-13 nuclear gravity bomb to its stockpile, in a move seen as an important milestone in its continuous process to modernise the country's nuclear weapon arsenal, the US Department of Energy reported. The new version is a highly potent improvement over its predecessors in the B61 family, with the best precision-guided technology meshed with a much greater explosive capability. The B61-13 is intended to carry a maximum yield of around 360 kilotons, much more powerful than the B61-12's top yield of 50 kilotons. Though increased, the new weapon still has the advanced guidance and safety technologies added in the B61-12, such as a tail kit that greatly enhances accuracy. This accuracy enables the B61-13 to target hardened and deeply buried targets more effectively, and possibly even decrease the number of weapons required for a particular mission. US Department of Defence officials have stressed that the creation of the B61-13 doesn't represent an increase in the nuclear stockpile numerically. Instead, it is to take some of the older versions of the B61-7, which will offer greater capabilities within existing force constraints. The modernisation falls under the Pentagon's overall nuclear posture, that of having a credible deterrent that has safety, security, and strategic flexibility. The B61-13 can be used on current as well as future aircraft, including the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber and future B-21 Raider. This will enable the US to have a forward-looking nuclear delivery capability in the event of rapidly evolving global threats and military technologies. Through the integration of higher yield, greater accuracy, and next-generation safety features into a single weapon, the B61-13 represents an affirmation of the United States' continued investment in a modern, flexible, and responsive nuclear force. It is an affirmation of a balancing act among deterrence, arms control commitments, and the strategic competition imperatives with nuclear-capable opponents. What is B61-13? The B61-13 is the latest modification to the B61 family of nuclear weapons and was completed nearly a year ahead of schedule and less than two years after the program was first announced, making it one of the most rapidly developed and fielded weapons since the Cold War. Under President Donald Trump’s leadership, the Department is modernising America’s nuclear stockpile to deliver peace through strength. The B61-13 builds on proven B61-12 production capabilities and incorporates modern safety, security, and accuracy features, with a yield tailored for hardened and large-area military targets. The B61-13 is one of seven warhead modernization programs NNSA is executing to ensure the long-term performance and credibility of the US deterrent.

What is Take It Down Act The Take It Down Act makes “knowingly publishing” or threatening to publish intimate images without a person's consent, including AI-created 'deepfakes', illegal. The law also orders websites and social media platforms to remove such material within 48 hours of notice from a victim. The platforms also required to delete all the duplicate content. The act has received immense support from the First lady Melania Trump. In March 2025, Melania lobbied on Capitol Hill and said it was “heartbreaking” to see what teenagers, especially girls, go through after being victimised by such content. The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, a tech industry-supported think tank, said in a statement following the bill's passage last month that it “is an important step forward that will help people pursue justice when they are victims of non-consensual intimate imagery, including deepfake images generated using AI.” Melania's signature After Trump signed the bill, he encouraged Melania to sign it too. At first, Melania hesitated so Trump said, “C’mon, sign it anyway. She deserves to sign it." National victory Melania called the law a "national victory". “AI and social media are the digital candy for the next generation, sweet addictive and engineered to have an impact on the cognitive development of our children. But unlike sugar, these new technologies can be weaponized, shape beliefs and, sadly, affect emotions and even be deadly," the US First Lady said.

US First Lady Melania Trump, who played a key role in pushing the bill through Congress, also signed the document, though her signature was symbolic.

US Vice President JD Vance raised questioned whether former President Joe Biden should have ever served as the president of the United States, hours after Biden's cancer diagnosis. Speaking to reporters prior to his departure from Rome, Vance said that he wished for Biden's recovery but also raised questions about the former president's fitness to serve in office. Specifying that he is not questioning the former president simply because of the difference in political opinion, Vance added it is “serious stuff” for someone who, as the President, is in charge of “the world's largest nuclear arsenal.” “We really do need to be honest about whether the former president was capable of doing the job. Following a long phone conversation with Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that the war in Ukraine could be moving in the right direction. Speaking after the two-hour call, Putin claimed Moscow is prepared to start work on a draft agreement for a possible peace deal with Kyiv.“The call was very informative and helpful,” Russian news agency RIA reported.
Moscow ready to draft peace terms
Putin said Trump supported direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. He also noted that Trump recognised Moscow's willingness to move towards peace, though the next challenge would be deciding how to get there.“We have agreed with the president of the United States that Russia will propose and is ready to work with the Ukrainian side on a memorandum on a possible future peace accord, defining a number of positions, such as, for example, the principles of settlement, the timing of a possible peace agreement,” Putin told reporters in Sochi, near the Black Sea.He added that if an agreement could be reached, it could lead to a ceasefire. “Direct talks between Russia and Ukraine give reason to believe that we are generally on the right track,” he said.
“Root causes” must be addressed, says Putin
Putin went on to say that Russia's stance on the conflict remains firm. “I would like to note that, on the whole, Russia’s position is clear. The main thing for us is to eliminate the root causes of this crisis. We just need to determine the most effective ways to move towards peace,” he said.
Peace only possible through compromise
According to TASS, another Russian state media outlet, Putin said that any peace deal would require both sides to find common ground. After dominating headlines for months as Donald Trump’s go-to man on government reform, Elon Musk has suddenly faded from the spotlight. The Tesla CEO, once touted as the star of Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is barely being mentioned now by the White House or Republican allies.According to a Politico report, Musk hasn’t featured in a single Truth Social post by Trump since 31 March. Before that, the president couldn’t stop praising him, mentioning Musk four times a week and even 11 times in one week back in February. Now, Musk is no longer front and centre in Cabinet meetings, press briefings, or on Capitol Hill.
Why the silence?
The shift came after a major embarrassment in early April. Musk had heavily backed conservative judge Brad Schimel in the Wisconsin state Supreme Court race, pouring in $21 million, an eye-popping sum for a judicial election. He even handed out $1 million cheques to voters and donned a cheesehead hat at a rally. But it backfired.Liberal Judge Susan Crawford defeated Schimel by 10 points, despite the flashy campaign. Two days later, a Marquette University Law School poll revealed that 58% disapproved of Musk’s handling of the secretive DOGE task force. Worse, 60% disapproved of him personally.“He’s finished, done, gone. He polls terrible. People hate him,” an unnamed GOP operative told Politico. “He’d go to Wisconsin thinking he can buy people’s votes, wear the cheese hat, act like a 9-year-old... It doesn’t work. It’s offensive to people,” he added.
DOGE mission still alive, but with less Musk
By law, Musk could only serve as a special government employee for 130 days, ending in late May. Although he has scaled back, the White House insists the DOGE initiative is still moving forward.“The mission of DOGE, to cut waste, fraud, and abuse, will surely continue. DOGE employees who onboarded at their respective agencies will continue to work with President Trump’s cabinet to make our government more efficient,” Trump’s press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement to Politico.Still, the grand promises have fallen short. While Musk vowed to save $2 trillion, the task force has only claimed about $170 billion in savings, a figure reportedly offset by lost revenue after cuts to positions like IRS auditors who target tax evaders.
Tesla’s troubles and fading political spotlight
Adding to the quiet retreat, Tesla’s profits dropped by 71% in the first quarter of 2025. Musk promised investors he’d limit his DOGE role to one or two days per week starting May, likely contributing to his lower visibility in government.Other Trump policies, like new tariffs, have also started drawing more attention than the DOGE reforms.Still, Musk isn’t completely out. 'Putin wants war': Russia sends 273 drones across Ukraine in largest attack since war began, hours before Trump-Putin talks

Governments across the world are fast catching up with the US president's way of conducting diplomacy. Donald Trump is weighing in on current geopolitical conflicts invariably offering trade as an incentive for US mediation to end wars. After saying that the US is hands off on the India-Pakistan conflict Trump took credit claiming that he and his administration played peacemakers. The US president says his suggestion let's do trade instead of war prevailed. The question however is what is the trade and with whom making matters murky are the US president's own personal business interests.

Who is benefiting from Trump's call to do trade instead of war?

US President Donald Trump took to social media, calling the autopen part of a “real crime” linked to the 2020 presidential election. In an early morning rant, he claimed that the device, used to replicate signatures, was abused during Joe Biden’s time in office.
“Whoever had control of the ‘AUTOPEN’ is looking to be a bigger and bigger scandal by the moment,” Trump wrote. “It is a major part of the real crime, THAT THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION OF 2020 WAS RIGGED AND STOLEN!” Trump said.
Though Trump did not offer proof that the autopen was misused, he suggested that it may have been used without Biden’s knowledge and connected it to pardons allegedly granted to members of the Jan 6 committee.

Trump and Melania are separated? US president's biographer Michael Wolff makes BIG claim

US President Donald Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social on Saturday (May 17) for an early morning rant after returning from a four-day tour of the Persian Gulf, where he visited Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
Trump repeated familiar claims, alleging that the 2020 presidential election was rigged, blaming the January 6 committee, and attacking the use of a mechanical signature device known as the Autopen.

Trump suggests Autopen was part of a bigger plot

In his post, Trump questioned the use of the Autopen, a device used by presidents, including Joe Biden, to sign documents remotely.
“Whoever had control of the ‘AUTOPEN’ is looking to be a bigger and bigger scandal by the moment. It is a major part of the real crime, THAT THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION OF 2020 WAS RIGGED AND STOLEN! Millions and millions of people knew that, but the Radical Left Democrats waged a campaign of inoculation and innocence like none that had ever been waged before,” he wrote.

He then turned his attention to the January 6 committee, accusing them of destroying evidence.
“THIS IS WHY THE UNSELECT COMMITTEE OF POLITICAL THUGS, WHO WERE GIVEN A FULL AND COMPLETE PARDON BY THE PERSON WHO WIELDED THE NOW ILLEGALLY USED AUTOPEN, DELETED AND DESTROYED ALL EVIDENCE AND INFORMATION FROM THEIR CORRUPT AND VICIOUS WITCH HUNT AGAINST ME, AND MANY OTHER PEOPLE, WHOSE LIVES WERE COMPLETELY SHATTERED AND DESTROYED BY THIS HISTORICALLY CRIMINAL EVENT.”

Election fraud claims once again at the centre

Trump ended his post by reviving his past allegations that Barack Obama, James Comey, and Joe Biden were part of a conspiracy against him.
“Remember, it all began with DIRTY COP James Comey, Obama, a hapless and cognitively impaired Sleepy Joe Biden, and my now very famous ACCUSATION that, ‘THEY SPIED ON MY CAMPAIGN!’ Whoever had control of the Autopen is just the beginning.
What really happened on January 6, 2021?

On January 6, 2021, a violent mob stormed the US Capitol as lawmakers gathered to certify Joe Biden’s presidential win. Trump, who had been speaking nearby, told supporters to march to the Capitol. The FBI later classified the incident as an act of domestic terrorism.
The House of Representatives impeached Trump for incitement of insurrection, but the Senate acquitted him.

Investigations found no evidence of widespread voter fraud

Despite Trump’s repeated claims, the 2020 election has been examined by multiple courts and independent bodies, all of which found no significant voter fraud.
The use of absentee ballots during the pandemic was lawful, and Biden’s win was confirmed by the Electoral College and later certified by Congress.

'Keep making America great': Serial killer's last words before execution in Florida

In what may be called a major geopolitical shift and an unexpected moment in the contemporary history of West Asia, US President Donald Trump met Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa in Saudi capital Riyadh. Not only did Trump shake hands with Syria's interim president becoming the first leader in 25 years to meet the Syrian counterpart but also announced a major breakthrough by lifting the Assad era sanctions. Trump also went a step forward by urging this 'young, tough guy' to recognise Israel eyeing an expansion to Abraham Accords.
It remains to be seen if this meet between Trump and Al Sharaa opens the doors of new sunrise in Syria. Currently what's pathbreaking is America's embracing Ahmed al- Sharaa aka Abu Mohammad Al-Jolani: once an US designated terrorist whose Al-Nusra front was an offshoot of Osama Bin Laden's Al-Qaeda.

Ahmed Al- Sharaa: From terrorist to meeting Trump

The world knew Abu Mohammad al-Julani, a designated terrorist, who was born in 1982 in Riyadh to Syrian parents originally from the Golan Heights. He became involved in jihadist movements during the early 2000s and joined al-Qaeda in Iraq amid the chaos of the US invasion and was later captured by American forces in 2006. After spending five years in detention, he returned to Syria as the civil war erupted in the aftermath of Arab Spring.
He founded the al-Nusra Front, an offshoot of al-Qaeda, which played a major role in the conflict. But by 2016, al-Sharaa publicly broke away from al-Qaeda, rebranding his organization as Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and signaling a shift toward a more localised Syrian agenda.
Ahmed al-Sharaa’s rise to power in Syria was the result of a swift military campaign and a carefully managed political transition. In late 2024, forces loyal to al-Sharaa, under the banner of HTS, launched a major offensive against the Syrian Arab Army. This campaign culminated in the capture of Damascus on December 8, forcing then-President Bashar al-Assad to flee the country, seeking refuge in Russia.
Following the fall of the capital, al-Sharaa worked with key political figures, including former Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali, to form a transitional government. Mohammed al-Bashir was appointed to lead this interim administration, aiming to bring stability after years of conflict. Later, Ahmed Al-Sharaa was chosen as interim president.
Ahmed al-Sharaa, previously known by nom de guerre Abu Mohammad al-Julani, began using his real name in late 2024 as part of a deliberate effort to shift his public image. This transition came after the fall of Damascus and the departure of Bashar al-Assad from power. By reverting to his birth name, al-Sharaa signaled a departure from Al-Qaeda links so as to present himself as a legitimate political figure.
This name change was not merely symbolic—it was a strategic move aimed at gaining international recognition and distancing himself from past affiliations with al-Qaeda.
And he might not be wrong, Al-Sharaa might have rewritten Syria's contemporary history with that handshake with the president of United States in Riyadh. "Attrative guy, tough guy, very strong past," is how Trump later described Sharaa to journalists.

From al-Qaeda terrorist to Trump's 'tough attractive guy': Story of Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa

US President Donald Trump is in Qatar and even before he reached Doha, all eyes were glued to his visit as reports floated about a grand gift of a $400 million jet that he would recieve from the Qatari royal family. Amid ethical and legal cocerns about the jet that will be converted to Air Force One, Trump said that he is not a fool to not accept a 'free gift'. Meanwhile, Qatar's prime minister defended his country’s offer telling CNN they would not go ahead with the gift if it was deemed illegal and insisted that it was not an effort to wield undue influence within the US.
"It is government to government. The transaction has nothing to do with personnel, whether it’s on the US side or on the Qatari side," Qatari prime minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani insisted.
Trump's bonhomie with the Qatari leadership raises many eyeballs. Democrats have accused the US president of selling America to Qatar and a report by Free Press suggest that many in Trump's administration has past links with Qatar.

Trump and Qatar: Newfound camaraderie but there are reasons to be cautious

Over the years, Qatar's investment in America reflect a calculated strategy to deepen both economic and diplomatic relations, however it has also sparked debate about the extent of foreign influence in American policy-making and institutions. In 2015, the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) pledged to invest $35 billion in the U.S. over five years. The focus was on key sectors like infrastructure, real estate, and technology. By 2019, that target increased to $45 billion, aiming to diversify away from heavy investments in Europe. As per reports, the QIA has invested billions in US real estate, particularly in major cities. In New York City alone, it purchased significant stakes in several Manhattan properties. It also backed the large-scale CityCenterDC project in Washington, D.C., and acquired a major office complex in Los Angeles.

Additionally, it became a minority investor in Monumental Sports & Entertainment, owner of several Washington, D.C. sports franchises.
On political front, following tensions during the 2017 Gulf crisis, Qatar ramped up its lobbying presence in Washington, spending millions to shape America's policy and improve its image.

Despite all of its efforts, America has reason to be cautious: Qatar might not be a friend. It is a seat of the Muslim Brotherhood, a crucial source of financing to Hamas, a diplomatic and energy partner of Iran, a refuge for the Taliban’s exiled political leadership - all opposed to US in some way or the other.
While Trump's Doha trip showed exceptional camararderie between him and the Qatari leadership, it is being taken with a pinch of salt in America's political circle. The Democrats have criticised Trump with 'Qatar-a-Lago' jabs and leaders from his own Republican Party have expressed their disappointment over the proposal of Qatari jet being used as Air Force One.

Though a Sunni-majority nation, Qatar maintains relatively cordial relations with Iran, sharing ownership of the world’s largest natural gas field. This cooperation stands in contrast to US efforts to isolate Iran diplomatically and economically. It also funds Al Jazeera, a global media network that has been called out by Trump and many in his administration as well as US' ally Israel.
Qatar attempts to maintain ties with conflicting parties: but its dual-track strategy creates an unpredictable partner whose interests may not always align with Washington’s. Moreover, if reports connecting Qatari investment and Trump's team's links to Qatar serve as any precursor to a story, then Trump's bonhomie with Qatar may not be a new found one, but a well-planned strategy by this Middle Eastern nation to be in the heart of power blocs of DC.

World | Qatar might not be a friend as it looks and US has all the reasons to be cautious: Years of investment and links of Trump's team with Qatar REVEALED
