Two-term limits were not etched in the Constitution but were an unwritten rule and practice in the US. One must note that George Washington, the first president of the US, had refused to serve a third term in 1796.
The need was felt to limit presidential terms to four years after Franklin D Roosevelt served as president from 1933 to 1945. Though these unprecedented four terms were partly due to the exigencies of World War II, term limits were introduced through a constitutional amendment. &nbsp;

Also, a vice president who has served as president due to the death or resignation of a president can be elected as president only twice. In other words, it can be two years as a successor (vice president taking up presidential duties) plus two full terms as president (if elected). This combination of successor plus two elected terms as president adds up to a total of 10 years, and is the maximum allowed under the Constitution.

This is where Trump could have a loophole. He can potentially make his current deputy JD Vance run for president in 2028, with him in the ticket as vice president. If elected, Vance could resign and allow Trump to become president using the succession route.
But there's still a problem: the 12th Amendment of the US Constitution. That amendment states that a person who is constitutionally ineligible to the office of president can't run for vice president. So the 22nd Amendment prohibits Trump from running for a third term as president and by extension, that ineligibility prevents him from contesting as a vice presidential candidate too.
The third route is based on the line of succession: the US House speaker is the third in line, and if Trump can become the House speaker and make both the president and vice president resign, then he has a chance of becoming president.

Repealing an amendment would require a two-thirds majority of both House and Senate or two-thirds approval from all state-level legislatures and ratification by three-fourths of 50 states in a constitutional convention, last used 33 years ago.&nbsp;
<h2>How Trump seeking a third term also opens up another race for Obama</h2>
If Trump indeed manages to amend the relevant laws to contest for a third term, that would open up chances for Obama to fight again.&nbsp;That is most likely to be a recipe for disaster for the Republican.
Let me explain.
The Obama camp in the Democrat party has already made noises about bringing back the former president for another term. Social media was awash with memes and reactions, saying that if Trump can come back for a third term, so can Obama.
<h2>Why Obama's Hamilton College appearance is significant</h2>
Amid this, Obama himself made his first major direct comments against the Trump administration.
"Imagine if&nbsp; I had done any of these", he said, referring to Trump's recent actions, to claps and cheers from the Hamilton College crowd this past week.
"It&rsquo;s unimaginable that the same parties that are silent now would have tolerated behavior like that from me or a whole bunch of my predecessors,&rdquo; he added for good measure.
Obama's Hamilton College remarks, by all appearances, was a staged event. Former presidents do not speak in colleges that often. This was the first major appearance of a big politician outside of convocation speeches in Hamilton College. It's largely a Democrat-leaning institution, so the choice of venue appears to be deliberate. Obama was essentially speaking to the converted: a crowd enamoured of him already.&nbsp;
<h2>Obama's third term was something many Americans wished</h2>
Back when Obama ended his second consecutive term, many supporters missed him. Some of them went to social media and asked him to stay, even though they knew it was constitutionally impossible.
Obama himself had said he would have won the 2016 election if it was possible to contest. He was speaking on a podcast with his former advisor David Axelrod.
But let us move speculation aside and look at reality.&nbsp;
<h2>Even if Obama won't be contesting, he will be very much in the race of 2028 because...</h2>
After the debacle of 2024, Democrats are still picking up the pieces and recouping. The damage done to the party through its directionless campaign is still being addressed. Joe Biden was pushed out of the race by Democrat bigwigs, to bring in then-Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost to Trump. Now, the party is in the process of naming a new leader, and none of the current contestants are popular or familiar faces.
Democratic Party is a combination of all kinds of left-leaning politicians, extending from extreme left to moderates and centrists. Neither Biden nor Harris was able to bring all of these constituencies under singular leadership. Barack Obama has the potential to change that.

There is a good chance that the Democratic party, in dire need of such a unifying leadership face, could rally behind Obama. As for the Democratic party, the Chicago wing is among the most effective political machines, with operatives like Axelrod and Rahm Emannuel who can still pack a punch. Chicago is Obama's base, and he would direct the future course of action for the party, with or without taking a formal official post. The brutal Chicago Democrat machine can bring back various factions of the Democrats under one ideological roof, led by an elder statesman like Obama.
Democrats have the tough task of bringing back the key voter bases it appears to have lost: Blacks, Hispanics, Muslims and other minorities, as well as women. Obama's past policies are likely to make him a more suitable leader in the eyes of the LGBTQ+ community, which is numerically insignificant but politically influential.&nbsp; So the Hamliton College event can be seen as the first of such efforts by the Democratic party to reach out to its constituents, not just as a friendly banter at a random educational institution by Obama.
<h2>Can Michelle Obama divorce rumours dent Barack Obama's popularity?</h2>
While his charisma and political acumen still attract fans, Obama has had a rough patch lately when it comes to reports about his married life. His banter with Trump after his election reportedly did not go down well with Michelle, who also broke protocol and missed the Trump inauguration. Rumour mills worked overtime to report on problems in the Obamas marriage, even hinting at splitsville.
At the Hamilton College appearance, Obama himself addressed it.
&ldquo;I was in a deep deficit with my wife,&rdquo; he told&nbsp; Hamilton College President Steven Tepper, adding, "I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things.&rdquo;
A divorce, or even continuing rumours about it, can become a deficit for Obama if he campaigns for 2028 either as a candidate or as a supporter.
Americans still have this Utopian view of the First Family being a 'model family'. In American politics, being an ideal couple is political capital.&nbsp; That's probably the reason why Obama made the public remarks about an issue that he's well aware has been making the rounds of newshours for some time. They also point out that trade deficits aren't just caused by tariffs. Factors like capital flows, supply chains, and geography all play a role. &ldquo;A trade deficit with a given country is not determined only by tariffs and non-tariff trade barriers,&rdquo; the authors said.

The White House later confirmed the tariff numbers were based on a basic model with just two variables. To soften the blow, Trump said he halved the resulting figure to be &ldquo;kind.&rdquo;
But the AEI economists say the administration's mistake lies in confusing how tariffs affect retail prices versus import prices. The formula used an elasticity value (how much prices respond to tariffs) of 0.25 when it should&rsquo;ve been closer to one.
&ldquo;The elasticity of import prices with respect to tariffs should be about one (actually 0.945), not 0.25,&rdquo; the report says, citing the original study Trump&rsquo;s team referred to. That small misstep, AEI warns, throws off the entire calculation.

Softwood lumber plays a pivotal role in houses built in the US, which is imported from Canada. But Trump said been categoric about the fact that the country has more lumber than they have ever used. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has been concerned about these tariffs as it could increase the cost of building houses. News outlet BBC, quoted NAHB, "Consumers end up paying for the tariffs in the form of higher home prices."
<h2>Beer, wine, whiskey, and tequila</h2>
Corona and Modelo are some of the popular beers that could be on shelves but with elevated price tags. These are imported from Mexico. The tariff on aluminium could inversely hike the prices of canned beverages. The Beer Institutes mentions that about 64.1% of beverages are poured out of cans in the country.
While the discussion among the representatives of the spirit industry is that some alcohol need to be produced in the respective country, like Tennessee whiskey, tequila, and Canadian whisky, bourbon. This may add to trouble with supplies and inturn affect the cost and pricing.
With that alcohol from Europe will see a 200% tariff. French champagne, German beer and Spanish wine lovers may feel the pinch, though this needs more clarity.

In 2024, US saw an import of about eight million cars, which accounted for about $240 billion in trade. The tariffs could add thousands of dollars to the cost of a new car purchase. Prices may go up even for cars made in the US. Given the longstanding free trade agreement between US, Mexico and Canada, many American companies have their operations in these countries.
The new tariffs have been relaxed on car spare parts from these countries as the customs and border patrol have systems in place to assess the duties levied. As reported in BBC, Anderson Economic Group says only parts from these countries could elevate the pricing by an estimated $4,000-$10,000, depending on the vehicle.
<h2>Fuel</h2>
Canada is US' largest foreign supplier of crude oil, according to official figures, 61% of oil imported into the country between January and November 2024 came from Canada.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration has introduced a 25% tariff on most goods imported from Canada, energy resources from the country face a&nbsp;lower rate of 10%.
<h2>Maple syrup</h2>
Canada rules the global market when it comes to maple syrup, the country accounts for 75% of the global production. The Quebec province produces about 90% of the king ingredient on pancakes. "That maple syrup is going to become more expensive. And that's a direct price increase that households will face," said Thomas Sampson from the London School of Economics.
He added, "If I buy goods that are domestically produced in the US, but [which use] inputs from Canada, the price of those goods is also going to go up."

<h2>A blow to Atmanirbhar Bharat</h2>
Trump&rsquo;s tariffs will be a direct blow to Modi&rsquo;s Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan, or &ldquo;self-reliant India&rdquo; campaign, which has been a core policy since 2020.
Since taking office in 2014, Modi has gradually hiked tariffs to push domestic manufacturing. His government has also rolled out production-linked incentives (PLIs) to attract foreign manufacturers to India by offering them rewards for increasing local production.
The official reason for India&rsquo;s high tariffs? Protecting local industries. These same industries, backed by big businessmen who benefit from these tariffs,&nbsp;are a major source of support (and funding) for the Indian government. 
<h2>Indian agriculture to a big hit</h2>
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick asked, &ldquo;Why won&rsquo;t India buy even a single bushel of American corn?&rdquo;
Lutnick wanted India to open up its agricultural sector, accusing India of blocking US farmers. But, while India could minimise tariffs on industrial goods, agriculture is a whole different topic.
Every time the government tries to sign a deal to allow dairy imports, it gets shut down because of the argument that it would drive millions of small farmers into ruin.&nbsp;
The same logic applies to other agricultural products. If India lets in cheap American imports, its farmers will take the brunt, and that&rsquo;s politically not good for Modi, who has already had to backtrack on farm laws after mass protests.

The Indian government tried to soften Trump&rsquo;s stance ahead of PM Modi's Washington visit in February by lowering India&rsquo;s highest tariffs (100-150 per cent) on some items, including bourbon whisky. 
Motorcycle import taxes also dropped from 50 per cent to 30 per cent, bringing India&rsquo;s average tariff rate down from 11.5 per cent to 10.6 per cent. This did help a bit: both sides agreed to finalise the first phase of a trade deal by autumn and boost trade to $500 billion by 2030 (from $210 billion in 2024). 
India also promised to buy more American oil, gas, and arms to reduce its trade surplus with the US. These moves keep talks alive and buy time.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal even flew to Washington to offer further tariff cuts covering 55 per cent of US exports. India also scrapped a 6 per cent tax on digital ads (a win for American tech giants), and Jio and Bharti Airtel struck deals to bring Elon Musk&rsquo;s Starlink satellite internet service to India.
But was that enough for Trump? No. India still landed on his latest tariff retaliation list.
<h2>Can Modi meet Trump&rsquo;s demands?</h2>
If PM Modi backs down too much, he could anger some of his strongest support groups&mdash;farmers and big business. Farmers are already cautious of Modi&rsquo;s policies, and businesses, who have long been protected from foreign competition for far too long, won&rsquo;t exactly be beaming with joy if tariffs drop too low.
Aside from that, Trump&rsquo;s tariffs could also hurt Indian exports. Goldman Sachs estimates that Trump's tariffs could cause a 0.6 per cent drop in India&rsquo;s GDP growth.
That might not seem like a lot right now, but a prolonged trade war could put a serious dent in PM Modi&rsquo;s vision for 'Amrit Kaal.'

Russian President Vladimir Putin's administration has warned President of the United States Donald Trump to back off after the POTUS threatened to strike Moscow ally Iran's nuclear facilities.
This warning signals a significant shift in Russian foreign policy towards America and comes as, in recent days, Putin was seen seeking to repair relations with Trump.
<h2>What did Russian say?</h2>
Speaking to Russian journal International Affairs, Putin's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said: "Threats are indeed being heard, ultimatums are also being heard."

He then warned that such strikes, if carried out, can be "catastrophic".
"The consequences of this, especially if the strikes are on nuclear infrastructure, could be catastrophic for the entire region," warned Ryabkov.
He added that "While there is still time and the 'train has not left', we need to redouble our efforts to try to reach an agreement on a reasonable basis. Russia is ready to offer its good services to Washington, Tehran, and everyone who is interested in this."

Issuing an ultimatum to Tehran, trump declared that "If they (Iran) don't make a deal, there will be bombing".
"It will be bombing the likes of which they have never seen before," he warned.&nbsp;
"There's a chance that if they don't make a deal, that I will do secondary tariffs on them like I did four years ago," he added.
Trump issued the warning on Sunday (Mar 30) after Iran rejected direct negotiations with the US on a nuclear deal.

Speaking to the Telegraph, an unnamed high-ranking official vowed: "There will be no distinction in targeting British or American forces if Iran is attacked from any base in the region or within the range of Iranian missiles".&nbsp;
"When the time comes, it won't matter whether you're an American, British, or Turkish soldier &ndash; you will be targeted if your base is used by Americans," added the chilling statement.
While Tehran claims that its uranium-enrichment programme is for energy, the rest of the world believes Iran is building a nuclear weapon.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's administration has warned President of the United States Donald Trump to back off after the POTUS threatened to strike Moscow ally Iran's nuclear facilities. This warning signals a significant shift in Russian foreign policy towards America and comes as, in recent days, Putin was seen seeking to repair relations with Trump. What did Russian say? Speaking to Russian journal International Affairs, Putin's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said: "Threats are indeed being heard, ultimatums are also being heard." He then warned that such strikes, if carried out, can be "catastrophic". "The consequences of this, especially if the strikes are on nuclear infrastructure, could be catastrophic for the entire region," warned Ryabkov. He added that "While there is still time and the 'train has not left', we need to redouble our efforts to try to reach an agreement on a reasonable basis. Russia is ready to offer its good services to Washington, Tehran, and everyone who is interested in this." Issuing an ultimatum to Tehran, trump declared that "If they (Iran) don't make a deal, there will be bombing". "It will be bombing the likes of which they have never seen before," he warned. "There's a chance that if they don't make a deal, that I will do secondary tariffs on them like I did four years ago," he added. Trump issued the warning on Sunday (Mar 30) after Iran rejected direct negotiations with the US on a nuclear deal. Speaking to the Telegraph, an unnamed high-ranking official vowed: "There will be no distinction in targeting British or American forces if Iran is attacked from any base in the region or within the range of Iranian missiles". "When the time comes, it won't matter whether you're an American, British, or Turkish soldier – you will be targeted if your base is used by Americans," added the chilling statement.
