'Only you....': Kohli LAUDS RCB mate Maxwell after his 201* in Australia's ODI WC win over Afghanistan

Australia rode on Glenn Maxwell's unbelievable 201 not out as they chased down a competitive 292-run target versus Afghanistan in match 39 of the ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Tuesday (Nov 7). Playing at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the Aussies were tottering at 91 for 7 before a breathtaking 202-run unbroken eighth-wicket stand between Maxwell and captain Pat Cummins (12 not out) took their side home in 46.5 overs.

With the win, Australia became the third team to qualify for the semi-finals. On the other hand, Afghanistan are also not yet ruled out of the semis race. Here's how:

Afghanistan had a simple, or much clear way of going ahead before the Aussie encounter -- i.e. to win both matches. Now, they need to beat South Africa in their remaining fixture and also press for a big victory to improve their Net Run Rate (NRR), which is below other contenders Pakistan (+0.036) and New Zealand (+0.398). Afghanistan's NRR is in negative (-0.338).

In case they beat the Proteas but not by a big margin, they will hope both New Zealand and Pakistan lose their next matches convincingly.

Aus vs Afg: Despite Maxwell's INSANE 201*, Afghanistan still alive in ODI WC semifinal race! Here's how -

Glenn Maxwell played a stupendous knock, 201 not out off 128 balls, as Australia beat Afghanistan by three wickets in the ODI World Cup in pursuit of 292 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. In match 39, Afghanistan rode on Ibrahim Zadran's 129 not out to post 291 for 5 and had the Aussies reeling at 91 for 7 before an unbroken 202-run eighth-wicket stand between Maxwell and captain Pat Cummins (12*) took the five-time winners to a stunning win.

Maxwell was struggling with severe cramps during his entire knock, but the 35-year-old didn't give up and targetted his bowlers and cleared the ropes at regular intervals to single-handedly take the Aussies to the semi-finals. Towards the end of the game, he was on the ground due to cramps, however, the veteran refused to go back and completed the job for his side. After the encounter, an elated Cummins opined on Maxwell's availability going forward.

'I'm sure he'll be fine'

Cummins said, "Yeah, I'm sure he'll be fine. He was cramping but I think you saw out there how much he loves playing for Australia and do anything to play. So, I'm sure it'll be fine. He is happy. Just cramp. I think that's the main thing. I think his back was cramping pretty early on. Felt tight and then just hamstrings, calves. For one over he said his toe was gone."

"So, I'm sure it will be fine, plenty of hydration, he'll be in the ice bath I'm sure, but I'm sure you'll be very satisfied and it will be okay," he added.

ODI WC: Australia captain Pat Cummins on Glenn Maxwell's availability after freak knock vs Afghanistan

Match 38 of the ODI World Cup was held between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, where Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangla Tigers won by three wickets in pursuit of 280 (with 53 balls to spare). While Tanzim Hasan Sakib's three-fer, Najmul Hossain Shanto's 90 and captain Shakib's 82 helped Bangladesh win a dramatic contest, in New Delhi, the game will be remembered for Angelo Mathews being the first batter to be timed out in international cricket.

Mathews was declared timed out after the former Sri Lankan captain did not face a single delivery during the two-minute window, as stipulated in tournament laws, due to helmet issues. This led to Shakib appealing and the umpires ruling Mathews out. It resulted in a huge controversy and the Lankan all-rounder didn't mince his words in the post-match presser, where he explained his side and termed 'Shakib and Bangladesh' disgraceful for 'stooping so low'.

Mathews said, "It was obviously disgraceful from Shakib and Bangladesh. If they want to take wickets like that and stoop down to that level, there's something wrong, drastically."

Mathews added, "I've got no words to explain it. In my 15 years of playing I've never seen a team or a player stoop so low. Unfortunately [the strap breaking] happened against Bangladesh. I don't think any other team would do that, because it was black and white. It was equipment malfunction. It was a safety issue as well. We know that without a helmet I can't face the bowling."

Meanwhile, Bangladesh captain Shakib said at the post-match ceremony, "One of our fielders came to me and said if you appeal now, he'll be out. Then I appealed and the umpire asked me if I am serious and if I am going to take it back or not. I said no, it's in the rules. It's in the laws."

Disgraceful of Shakib and Bangladesh to stoop that low, says a fuming Angelo Mathews after being TIMED OUT

Tempers were flying in the game between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in match 38 of the ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Tuesday (Nov 6), in New Delhi. The Angelo Mathews timed-out controversy made headlines in the Lankan innings and later escalated further as players from both camps refused to shake hands and left the ground after the Bangla Tigers won by three wickets, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in the national capital.

Chasing 280, Bangladesh were 41 for 2 before a magnificent 169-run third-wicket stand between captain Shakib Al Hasan (82) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (90) propelled them to a win, despite losing wickets towards the end of the run-chase. Towhid Hridoy and Tanzim Hasan Sakib's eighth-wicket stand saw their side past the finish line. However, there were no handshakes between both the camps.

It all happened after Mathews became the first player to be timed out in international cricket. Coming out to bat at No. 6, Mathews could not take the crease within the required amount of time, prompting the Bangladesh players to appeal. Following this, there were a lot of discussions in the middle, with Mathews trying to indicate that he was facing an issue with his helmet’s strap. Unbeaten India equal unique ODI World Cup record after 243-run win over South Africa

It was the clash-of-the-table-toppers when India locked horns with South Africa in match 37 of the ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Sunday (Nov 5) at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata. While many expected it to go down to the wire, Rohit Sharma-led India continued their unbeaten streak in the mega event by earning their eighth win on the trot, beating the Proteas by a massive 243-run margin.

Batting first, India rode on captain Rohit Sharma's 24-ball 40, Shreyas Iyer's 77 and birthday boy Virat Kohli's 101* to post 327/5.

They are the team to beat and former Pakistan batting great Mohammad Yousuf feels Rohit & Co. will remain unbeaten to win the World Cup at home.

“Before the match, it seemed that a close game between two top teams is on the cards. But after this match, only one team is on top in the tournament. India are favourites and that’s because they have top-class batters, bowlers and their fielding is also top notch and they are playing as a unit,” Yousuf opined on his YouTube channel.

In reply, the Proteas only managed a paltry 83 in 26.1 overs, with Ravindra Jadeja taking 5 for 33. So far, India have beaten the likes of five-time winners Australia, Afghanistan, arch-rivals Pakistan, Bangladesh, New Zealand, England, Sri Lanka and South Africa -- who are the only team apart from them with a semifinal berth -- and sit pretty at the top (with 16 points). It’s Rahul Dravid’s hard work & team’s spirit that team India is rocking in it’s own way. Rohit & Dravid’s chemistry is spectacular.
“Very happy knowing that we have officially qualified now. Been a good effort from the squad, when we started in Chennai. This was our goal, to qualify first and then obviously to be in the semis and the finals. The way we approached these 7 games, it was quite clinical. Was a good challenge to put runs on the board, and that's the kind of template you gotta have when you want to score that many runs,” Rohit said during the post-match presentation.

IN PICS | Five top moments from India's dominant win vs Sri Lanka in ODI World Cup

India have been in superb form in the ODI World Cup 2023 edition. The home side have won their first six games and already have one foot in the semi-finals. On Thursday (Nov 2), as India locked horns with Sri Lanka at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma opened up on India's winning streak and stated that the Men in Blue are still striving hard to keep improving and not get carried away.

After Kusal Mendis-led Islanders opted to bowl first in Mumbai, Rohit spoke at the toss and said, "We would have batted first as well. Good pitch and some assistance at the start and it will be nice under lights for our seamers to bowl. It's a great honour and a good moment for me to captain the team where I have grown up playing. That's a good thing for us moving forward. But as a team, we strive to keep improving and not get carried away and stay balanced. Try to tick the boxes whenever we take the field."

'We strive to keep improving and not get carried away': Rohit Sharma on India's unbeaten run in ODI WC

Rohit Sharma-led India have been on a roll in the home ODI World Cup. They remain the only unbeaten team in the tournament, having won their first six games with relative ease. Ahead of their clash versus Sri Lanka on Thursday (Nov 2), head coach Chris Silverwood opened up on India's bowling attack and heaped praise on the attack with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, etc. performing brilliantly so far.

'There is no hiding it is a very good bowling attack'

"If you look at that bowling attack and you watch them operate, it is a very strong bowling attack. I think any team in the world would want an attack like that, to be honest," Silverwood told media during the team's training session prior to the India game. He opined, "But we see that as a great challenge for our guys. We see it as an opportunity to go out and play against the best and see, I mean, pit ourselves against that. But there is no hiding it is a very good bowling attack."

So far, Bumrah has accounted for 14 wickets (fourth-most), Kuldeep has ten scalps (13th), Shami has nine breakthroughs from two encounters whereas Ravindra Jadeja has got eight wickets in the mega event.

India and Sri Lanka will face each other for the first time after the Asia Cup 2023 final played in Colombo on September 17. Back then, India rode on Mohammed Siraj's 6 for 21 to dismiss the Lankans for 50 and chased down the target with ten wickets, and 263 balls to spare. Silverwood is optimistic that the defeat in the Asia Cup would 'give more motivation' to the Lankan squad, which is marred with injuries, to perform well.

"I would rather hope that the defeat in the Asia Cup would give more motivation to the boys to come out and obviously fight, show plenty of spirit and get stuck in to the Indian side. They are a very good side — we know that — we have seen them play some superb cricket this tournament so far. But I think it is a good opportunity for our boys to show what they are made of as well. He was at his best in the game versus the Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangladesh line-up and accounted for early strikes to put Babar Azam-led Men in Green ahead from the word go after being asked to bowl first. He dismissed the likes of Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mahmudullah. His delivery to dismiss Mahmudullah was lauded by the cricketing fraternity. Shaheen has accounted for 16 scalps in six games in the ongoing ten-team ODI World Cup in India, at an economy rate of 5.22 and a strike rate of 22.87. Also read: 'He is not...': Dawid Malan says coach Matthew Mott should not be blamed for England's CWC '23 debacle Shaheen's rise has led to considerable changes in the bowling list with Hazlewood, India's Mohammed Siraj, South Africa's Keshav Maharaj, New Zealand's Trent Boult, India’s Kuldeep Yadav and Afghanistan's spin duo Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman moving one place down. With regard to the batting list, Babar continues to lead but only has a slender two-point (818) lead over Indian opener Shubman Gill.

Defending champions England have been a pale shadow of themselves in the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition in India. In six games, England have managed only a solitary win and have lost to England, New Zealand and India by big margins. Thus, they are pretty out of the semi-finals race and are alive in the tournament only mathematically. English opener Dawid Malan opened up on England's struggles and feels one should not blame head coach Matthew Mott.

"Motty is not the one walking out on the field. We are being given everything we need to perform. We just haven't been able to find a way to get wins on the board. It has been frustrating from a players' point of view because we know we're better than that."

'Please leave Babar Azam alone, he's...': Waqar REACTS after alleged leaked chats of Pak captain surface

Rohit Sharma-led India crushed defending champions England in match 29 of the ODI World Cup 2023 edition in Lucknow on Sunday (Oct 29). With five successive wins in the ten-team tournament, India were favourites versus the struggling English line-up. Being asked to bat first, India rode on captain Rohit's sublime 87, Suryakumar Yadav's 49 and KL Rahul's 39 to post 229 for 9. In reply, the English line-up were bundled out for a paltry 129 in 34.5 overs with Mohammed Shami (4 for 22), Jasprit Bumrah (3 for 32) and Kuldeep Yadav (2 for 24) shining with the ball.

Thus, this became India's sixth win on the trot as they remain the only unbeaten side in the competition and are sitting pretty at the top with 12 points. With this victory, India also attained a special feat. They have now surpassed New Zealand (58) to have second-most wins in ODI World Cup history, with five-time winners Australia at the top (73). Meanwhile, England attained another dubious feat in the ongoing World Cup, losing four back-to-back games for the first time ever. Pakistan had achieved this forgettable record after their loss to South Africa on Friday (Oct 27) in Chennai.

At the post-match presentation, captain Rohit lauded India's team effort and said, "This was the game, a lot of character in the squad. When the times were tough, all our experienced players stood up at the right time and got the game for us. Looking at how the tournament has gone for us, batting second in the first five games, we had to come and bat here. We were challenged upfront, they bowled pretty well upfront. For us to get to a total on a pitch that had something in it, we just wanted to get to a total where we could play with it. We were not great with the bat today. Losing three wickets isn't the ideal situation. When you are in a situation like that, all you are looking to do is create that long partnership, which we got. But couple of guys threw it at the end, including myself."

He added, "I thought we were 30 runs short. (On India's new ball bowling) It's not something you see everyday. When you start your innings, you have to somehow try and get a couple of wickets to put the pressure back on the opposition. With the experience that our seamers have now, you can always rely and bank on them to get those crucial breakthroughs. That's exactly what our seamers did. They exploited the conditions pretty well. There was swing, there was lateral a bit of lateral movement as well. They put the ball in the right areas to create that doubt in the batters' mind."

India have reached Mumbai for their next clash, where they will face 1996 winners Sri Lanka in match 33 of the mega event at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. One more point will secure India's place in the semi-finals.

For us to get to a total on a pitch that had something in it, we just wanted to get to a total where we could play with it. We were not great with the bat today. Losing three wickets isn't the ideal situation. When you are in a situation like that, all you are looking to do is create that long partnership, which we got. But couple of guys threw it at the end, including myself." He added, "I thought we were 30 runs short. They put the ball in the right areas to create that doubt in the batters' mind." India have reached Mumbai for their next clash, where they will face 1996 winners Sri Lanka in match 33 of the mega event at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. One more point will secure India's place in the semi-finals. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.

India surpass New Zealand to achieve THIS special feat in ODI World Cups after win over England

India demolished England by 100 runs in match 29 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Sunday (Oct 29) in Lucknow. Being asked to bat first, Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue huffed and puffed to post 229 for 9 in 50 overs before Mohammed Shami (4 for 22) and Jasprit Bumrah (3 for 32) starred with the ball as England got dismissed for a paltry 129 in 34.5 overs. In addition, Kuldeep Yadav chipped in with two scalps while Ravindra Jadeja returned with figures of 1 for 16.

While Shami and Bumrah were lethal with the ball, Kuldeep bowled the 'ball of the tournament' to dismiss English skipper Jos Buttler. With England on the back foot at 33 for 3, Buttler came out in the middle with a herculean task in hand. He, however, could not stay in the middle for quite long as Kuldeep outfoxed him with a peach of a delivery.

IND vs ENG: Kuldeep came up with ball of World Cup 2023 to outfox Jos Buttler - Former England captain

Pakistan have not lived up to expectations so far in the ongoing ICC Men's ODI World Cup in India. After winning their first two games, Babar Azam-led Men in Green were on a roll before losing four games on the trot. Thus, they are languishing at the sixth position with four points, and a Net Run Rate of -0.387, and are on the brink of an early elimination. They faced high-flying South Africa in match 26 of the ten-team tournament on Friday (Oct 27), in Chennai, and went down by a wicket in a thriller, in defence of 270, to further decrease their chances of going ahead into the semi-finals.

However, Babar & Co. are not out of the semi-final race as yet. There is a remote chance of them making it to the semi-finals but they need to win all their remaining games, that too by a big margin, and also hope for other results to go in their favour. As per a report in Cricket Addictor, Here are all the possible scenarios for the 1992 winners:

Pakistan's Qualification Scenario For Semi-Finals:

- To win all their remaining games, beat New Zealand, Bangladesh and England (by big margins as well)
- Hope for England, Afghanistan and Bangladesh to beat five-time winners Australia
- For Pakistan to remain alive, they need the Kiwis to defeat Sri Lanka
- Hope for India's win over the Netherlands.
- South Africa and Sri Lanka to beat Afghanistan, who have defeated Pakistan and England in the ongoing competition
- India or Bangladesh to defeat Sri Lanka

Talking about Pakistan's game versus the Proteas, the Babar-led side opted to bat first and rode on the captain's 50, Saud Shakeel's 52 and Shadab Khan's vital 43 to post 270 in 46.4 overs. In reply, Temba Bavuma-led South Africa chased down the score in the 48th over with one wicket in hand. Aiden Markram (91) and Tabraiz Shamsi (4 for 60 and 4 not out) were the star performers for the Proteas, with the latter earning the Player-of-the-Match award.

At the post-match presentation, Babar said after the loss, "We are very close, we did not finish well. Very disappointing for the whole team. We fought back very well. In the batting we were 10-15 short. The fast bowlers and spinners fought well but unfortunately it was not to be. It is part of the game, in DRS it is part of the game. We will try our best in the next 3 matches and put our efforts and play for Pakistan. Let's see where we will stand after that."

Sri Lanka defeated England by eight wickets in match 25 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Thursday (Oct 26) at the M Chinnaswammy Stadium in the south Indian city of Bengaluru. With this heavy defeat, the defending champions England are now on the brink of elimination as the 2019 winners have only one win from five games. The entire clash displayed England's ordinary performance as they bundled out for 156 in 33.2 overs as the Lankans chased down the score in 25.4 overs with fifties from Pathum Nissanka (77*) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (65*).

During the game, stand-in captain Kusal Mendis produced a moment of brilliance to outfox English spinner Adil Rashid and run him out for 2.

It happened during the 32nd over when Maheesh Theekshana was operating from the bowler's end. In the last ball of the over, Theekshana bowled it down the leg side, to David Willey, as it was a wide when Mendis collected the ball and caught Rashid out of the crease. Hence, he targetted the stumps and hit the wicket with Rashid well out of the crease. The video of the run-out has gone viral with many hailing the Sri Lankan captain's presence of mind.

UNMISSABLE: Kusal Mendis' BRILLIANCE sends Adil Rashid back in England vs Sri Lanka World Cup tie - Watch

Australia romped past Netherlands by 309 runs in match 25 of the ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Wednesday (Oct 25) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. This became the biggest win for any side, in terms of runs, in WC history. Opting to bat first, the Aussies rode on David Warner's 104 and Glenn Maxwell's 44-ball 106, laced with 9 fours and 8 sixes, to post a mammoth 399 for 8. In reply, the Netherlands were bundled out for a paltry 90 in 21 overs due to Adam Zampa's 4 for 8.

After the match, former Indian batter Sanjay Bangar lauded Maxwell for his record knock.

While speaking to Star Sports in the post-match analysis, Bangar was in awe of Maxwell's innovative shots -- as his inning was filled with reverse hits, cuts, pull and he even slammed a reverse-sweep-scoop -- and said, "He practices them a lot. When all batters do knocking before the match, he first comes and plays the sweep, then the reverse sweep, and once that is done, he switches his hands and practices the switch hit."

"To hit that six over third man off a bouncer, it means he has special ability. You shouldn't expect consistency from his bat because he plays such high-risk cricket, but whenever he plays, he will do something where the world will ask where he has been thus far and why he can't do that consistently," added Bangar.

After the game, Player-of-the-Match Maxwell said at the post-match presentation, "I was just trying to give ourselves a good platform at the end. You can certainly cash in on this ground with bat (batting first towards the end) and it seams under lights. Nice to get some rhythm finally in the tournament. Huge confidence booster. Some doubts do creep in when you are consistently not making runs. Hopefully I can ride forward from this. Pretty much the perfect game with bat and ball for us. Three wins now and certainly starting to get that momentum as a team."

CWC '23: 'Maxwell makes match one-sided when his bat fires': Ex-India batter on Aussie star's record ton

Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar feels Virat Kohli will score his 50th ODI ton during India's forthcoming World Cup clash versus South Africa on Nov 5, when Kohli will turn 35. The former Indian captain has been in top form in the ongoing ten-team tournament in India, with 354 runs in five games (most by an Indian, second-most overall).

He has had scores of 85, 55*, 16, 103* and 95. After his ton versus Bangladesh in Pune on Oct 19, Kohli reached his 48th ODI ton and is only one away from equaling Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar's century tally (49); most by a batter in the 50-over format.

Gavaskar has, thus, made a bold claim that Kohli's merry run will continue and he will soon score the 50th ODI hundred, going past Tendulkar's tally.

Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar said, "Kohli will slam his 50th ODI Century against South Africa at the Eden Gardens and what better occasion than his birthday? It's a sight when you slam a ton there because the Kolkata crowd gives you a standing ovation, and cheers for you, the air is filled with whistles and claps. It is a moment to savour for every batter."

At present, the Kohli-starrer Indian team has reached Lucknow for their upcoming game versus England on Sunday (Oct 29).

The Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue have been in top form with five back-to-back wins and remain the only unbeaten side in the mega event. India will hope for their dream run to continue and for Kohli to also reach his 49th century soon and got to his 50th ton during the SA encounter in Kolkata.

It is a moment to savour for every batter." The Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue have been in top form with five back-to-back wins and remain the only unbeaten side in the mega event. India will hope for their dream run to continue and for Kohli to also reach his 49th century soon and got to his 50th ton during the SA encounter in Kolkata.
Team India is on a roll in the ODI World Cup 2023 edition at home. They remain the only unbeaten team after winning their first five games. Rohit Sharma & Co. will next lock horns with England at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow. Ahead of the much-awaited encounter on Sunday (Oct 29), former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh feels the home side can play three spinners in the playing XI for the Lucknow tie.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Harbhajan said, "England do not play spin well. As it is, England are not playing well in the World Cup, and if the ball starts spinning, I don’t think they will be able to do much better. Playing three spinners might not be a bad option." He further suggested that Mohammed Siraj -- who has six wickets in five games in World Cup 2023 -- can be rested.

Bhajji opined, "Siraj can be rested. He has played back-to-back games. Shami has just come into the playing XI and has claimed a five-fer. If a pitch is a normal one and is not expected to offer a lot of turn, then I do not see too many changes in the team."

CWC '23: 'Playing 3 spinners not a bad option' - Harbhajan Singh on India's playing XI for England tie

Australia humbled the Netherlands by 309 runs in match 24 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 on Wednesday (Oct 25) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Opting to bat first, Pat Cummins & Co. rode on David Warner's 104, Glenn Maxwell's 44-ball 106 (laced with 9 fours and 8 sixes at 240.91) and fifties from Steve Smith (71) and Marnus Labuschange (62) to post a mammoth 399 for 8. In reply, Scott Edwards & Co. only managed 90 in 21 overs (thanks to Adam Zampa's four-fer) to lose by 309 runs, the biggest-ever World Cup loss by runs. Thus, Australia are now on a roll with three back-to-back wins after defeats in their opening two encounters.

Steve Smith attended the post-win media interaction and was asked about the CWC 2023 edition's current top two teams, i.e. India and South Africa. Rohit Sharma's India and Temba Bavuma-led Proteas have 10 and eight points, respectively, and look set to seal their place in the semi-finals sooner than later. Thus, the right-hander was all praise for India and the Proteas.

While responding to WION's question on India and SA, Smith said, "I think both are playing really good cricket. SA play like we played today. They are trusting their top five batters to go out and build a platform before Klaasen and Miller to smack it at the backend. Obviously, they have played on very good batting surfaces as well, one here (in New Delhi) and two at the Wankhede. India are favourites in the tournament, they are playing very well and are playing at home. They are a very good side."

Meanwhile, Australia, now with a Net Run Rate of +1.142, are also catching up. They remain at the fourth spot, one below New Zealand.

At the post-match presentation, Aussie skipper Cummins said, "Really happy, complete game. To put 400 on board and then defend well, couldn't be happier. Crazy innings. I think we both contributed equally in that hundred partnership (chuckles). Fantastic innings, the cleanest hitting I've seen. We played the style we liked to. Pleased with Smithy getting runs. We were aiming for powerplay wickets, bowled quite well without a lot of luck. Zamps with another four-fer. They (New Zealand) are a really good side.. Big game in Dharamsala. It's the World Cup and we are in a good space, can't wait to get there. (Areas to improve) I don't think we have totally nailed the 50 overs with the bat yet."

'SA are trusting their top five, India are...': Smith lauds in-form teams after Australia thrash Netherlands

The 2003 World Cup final had a catastrophic effect on every Indian cricket fan. As disappointing as it was for every ardent fan of the nation, it made me -- back then, an 11-year-old kid -- fall madly in love with the sport. There was no turning back from there.

Before the 2003 debacle, I saw Team India win the NatWest Trophy. For me, 2004 is still vividly etched in my memory for India's historic tour of Pakistan whereas the coming years just added more memories. Thus, becoming a sports journalist has been on my bucket list since then. Obviously, the dream of representing India would have been much better. However, that bus sadly left due to sheer laziness during my college days.

Come 2016, I got my first job. I officially entered the sports journalism industry. Growing up watching India win the home ODI World Cup in 2011 motivated me enough to cover the mega event in 2023 -- when the tournament returned to Indian shores. Come Oct 25 (Wednesday), that dream was fulfilled. I was part of the media box for the Australia versus Netherlands group stage tie at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

Batting first, Australia found boundaries at will as David Warner (104) and Steve Smith (71) matched each other with every stroke. However, there was a collapse as the Aussies were reduced to 290-6 from 244-2. Still, there were enough overs in the bank for a Glenn Maxwell special. And boy, did he make it special!

Maxi slammed a 40-ball 100 -- fastest ever in ODI World Cup -- and ended with 106 off 44; laced with 9 fours and 8 sixes at a strike rate of 240.91. His inning was filled with reverse hits, cuts, pulls and a reverse-sweep-scoop (yes, you read that right). It was an exhibition of T20-style batting including some audacious shots in all parts of the ground. Netherlands' Bas de Leede bore the brunt and, as a result, ended with the most expensive bowling figures in ODIs (10-0-115-2).

Maxwell's unreal knock lifted the mood of the entire stadium as they didn't need an announcer instructing them to make more noise. They were buzzing on a lazy and pleasant Wednesday evening.

Such was Maxi's onslaught that Australia comfortably posted 399-8 even after losing wickets in a flurry. Such was the right-hander's entertainment that the crowd forgot Warner's ton -- with no disrespect to his 104. Such was the effect of Maxwell's ton that he added a hundred with captain Pat Cummins when the latter added only eight runs.

Highest run-rates for a 100+ partnership in World Cups:
14.61 (134*) - MV Boucher, JH Kallis (SA) vs NED, Basseterre, 2007
14.37 (103) - PJ Cummins, GJ Maxwell (AUS) vs NED, Delhi, today*
14.23 (123) - WW Hinds, BC Lara (WI) vs CAN, Centurion, 2003

After the berserk innings, Maxwell said at the mid-break, "Feels pretty good. I've been pretty cooked all day. Probably just cleared my head a bit to just go out and play. The situation when Davey and Greeny got out, I had to take it deep a little bit. Patty was good as well. Even if they are banging it into the wicket, I feel I have enough time to go after it. And when they are bowling quick, my hands have to be faster."

People will remember Australia's clash versus the Netherlands only due to the sheer box-office entertainment provided by the all-rounder (which they eventually won by 309 runs -- highest-ever victory by runs in ODI WC history). Thank you Maxi for making my first-ever World Cup trip to the stadium thoroughly entertaining.

The 2003 World Cup final had a catastrophic effect on every Indian cricket fan. As disappointing as it was for every ardent fan of the nation, it made me -- back then, an 11-year-old kid -- fall madly in love with the sport.

Also read: World Cup 2023: Glenn Maxwell smashes fastest century in ODI WC history, obliterates Markram's record Batting first, Australia found boundaries at will as David Warner (104) and Steve Smith (71) matched each other with every stroke.
