India will face Pakistan on Saturday (Oct 14) in match 12 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition. Both teams are coming into this game on the back of two successive wins each and, thus, the clash is expected to go down to the wire at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad. Before the clash, many former cricketers and experts of the game shared their predictions and picked which team would start as favourites.

Former Pakistan captain-turned-commentator Ramiz Raja feels Rohit Sharma & Co. will start as favourites. Ramiz told Jio Cinema, "This game, it's played off the field as much as it is on the field. It's a huge game. India will start as favourites, three is no doubt about it. They have all their bases covered when it comes to batting, bowling and in terms of fitness."

"Pakistan have to raise their level massively if they are to do well. But the win against Sri Lanka, the record chase would have made a huge difference to Pakistan in their dressing room, they have to think of winning and go on with an uncluttered mind," he further opined.

'If Pakistan don't....'

Ramiz went on to say, "Pakistan need wickets at the start. But their bowling has come under pressure, and wickets are not coming. Naseem Shah is not available, Pakistan is missing him a lot. Shaheen Shah Afridi has a swelling in one of his fingers and because of that, he has not been at his best. Hasan Ali's pace has dripped. But somehow, Pakistan have to lift their bowling performance. If they don't do it and the bowling is flat, India will bat Pakistan out of the contest. Pakistan have to take their catches well. They should not allow big partnerships.

The former Pakistan captain added, "Pakistan need a proper spinner. Can they take the chance by playing Usama Mir? The two spinners that are playing now are all-rounders. They have not performed up to the mark now. India have a very strong batting line-up. They have to think in terms of selection also. If they go in with an uncluttered mind, if they pick up a a couple of wickets with the new ball, if they can get the tactics right, keep the pressure on India batters in the middle overs, then they have an outside chance."

Rohit-led India won their tournament opener versus Australia by six wickets in pursuit of 200 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai before beating Afghanistan by eight wickets in New Delhi, India. Meanwhile, Babar Azam-led Men in Green beat the Netherlands by 81 runs and went past Sri Lanka by six wickets, in pursuit of 345, in their first two encounters in Hyderabad.

Overall, India lead Pakistan 7-0 in ODI World Cup history. It will be interesting to see if India maintain their lead or if Babar & Co. get off the mark versus the arch-rivals. Both sides locked horns twice in the Asia Cup 2023 edition, with the Men in Blue winning one and the other game being washed out.

In match 9 of the ODI World Cup 2023, Rohit Sharma-led India demolished Afghanistan by eight wickets in pursuit of 273 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi on Wednesday (Oct 11). Being asked to bowl first, Afghanistan did well to post 272 for 8, riding on captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (80) and Azmatullah Omarzai (62) but fell flat with the ball as skipper Rohit (131) and Virat Kohli (55 not out) propelled India to a stunning eight-wicket win in 35 overs.

Thus, with two wins in a row, India will now shift their focus on playing arch-rivals Pakistan in match 12 of the ongoing marquee event. Rohit Sharma becomes joint-fastest to 1k runs in ODI World Cup history during India-Afghanistan clash

Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in pursuit of 345 in match 8 of the CWC 2023 edition on Tuesday (Oct 10) in Hyderabad. Sri Lanka opted to bat first and rode on centuries from Kusal Mendis (122) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (108) to post 344 for nine. While they hardly got going in the final few overs, it seemed like a winning score nonetheless.

In reply, Pakistan were even jolted early and were reeling at 37 for 2 with Imam-ul-Haq and skipper, and their Mr. Dependable, Babar Azam back in the pavallion. It appeared that the Men in Green would go down easily before opener Abdullah Shafique -- playing his first game in ODI World Cup -- and keeper-batter Mohammed Rizwan stood tall with an impressive 176-run third-wicket stand. Shafique's 113 and Rizwan's 131 not out led the one-time winners to a convincing six-wicket win.

After their win over Sri Lanka, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar lauded Rizwan-Shafique's show. He feels this bodes well for the side as no significant contribution came from Babar. He further opined that Pakistan need not depend solely on Babar now with many others standing up to the occasion.

Gavaskar said on Star Sports, "When you are chasing 350 runs, it takes a lot. They also lost a couple of early wickets in the game. I think more than anything else, I mean, we have all known about what Rizwan can do. But Abdullah Shafique, he looked like a Test batter. The way he anchored the innings with Rizwan, it was great."

The cricketer-turned-commentator added, "More than anything else, Pakistan would have realised that they do not have to depend on Babar. And if Babar fails, there are other batters who are there to score the runs. And I think that is such an important thing for Babar himself because the pressure will not be on him that he has to score all the time."

With the win over SL, Pakistan maintained their dominance over their Asian neighbours in World Cup history, leading 8-0.

Pakistan are at the second spot in the overall standings in the World Cup with two back-to-back wins. They will now face arch-rivals India on Saturday (Oct 14) in Ahmedabad.

Also read: Ind vs Afg, CWC '23: Shardul Thakur takes a STUNNER to send Rahmanullah Gurbaz packing - Watch Gavaskar said on Star Sports, "When you are chasing 350 runs, it takes a lot. They also lost a couple of early wickets in the game. I think more than anything else, I mean, we have all known about what Rizwan can do. But Abdullah Shafique, he looked like a Test batter. The way he anchored the innings with Rizwan, it was great." The cricketer-turned-commentator added, "More than anything else, Pakistan would have realised that they do not have to depend on Babar. And if Babar fails, there are other batters who are there to score the runs. And I think that is such an important thing for Babar himself because the pressure will not be on him that he has to score all the time." With the win over SL, Pakistan maintained their dominance over their Asian neighbours in World Cup history, leading 8-0. Pakistan are at the second spot in the overall standings in the World Cup with two back-to-back wins. They will now face arch-rivals India on Saturday (Oct 14) in Ahmedabad. CWC '23: Our middle-order not tested properly, feels Yuvraj; names THIS Indian who can win POTT award

After losing the toss, Rohit Sharma-led India have been asked to bowl first by Afghanistan in match 9 of CWC 2023 edition on Wednesday (Oct 11). Afghanistan were off to a decent start before they were soon reduced to 63 for 3. Talking about the Afghan openers, Ibrahim Zadran departed for 22 whereas Rahmanullah Gurbaz (21) was looking good before Shardul Thakur held on to a stunning catch to send him packing.

Talking about Gurbaz's dismissal, it was a well-executed short-pitched delivery from birthday boy Hardik Pandya. The batter went for the shot and seemed to have timed it well. Shardul, stationed at deep fine leg, caught the ball, was about to touch the boundary rope and, hence, threw the ball in the air, regained balance and completed the catch without breaking a sweat.

Ashwin will fight till the last delivery: Tendulkar lauds star player's attitude and approach towards game

Match 8 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition will see Asian giants Sri Lanka and Pakistan lock horns with each other at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Tuesday (Oct 10). Both teams are coming into this face-off on the back of contrasting results in their respective tournament openers.

While Babar Azam-led Pakistan beat the Netherlands by 81 runs, Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka put up a valiant fight versus the mighty South Africans, in pursuit of 429, but lost by 102 runs. Thus, the battle between two strong Asian sides promises to be an enthralling one on Tuesday evening.

In head-to-head at the World Cup, the 1992 winners have a clear edge over the Islanders with a 7-0 record (in eight games). Pakistan have beaten the Sri Lankans in eight out of the last nine ODIs.
WHAT THEY SAID

"We've got full faith in our top order. They will click at some stage. And we're open and honest to say that we're not getting what we would like out of the Powerplay as yet. But we're certainly very happy with other phases of our game which have kicked into gear and did enough the other night to get over the line" - Grant Bradburn, Pakistan head coach.

World Cup 2023, Match 8: Pakistan take on Sri Lanka in Hyderabad - Preview and result prediction

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has raised concerns over Hardik Pandya’s involvement as a bowler in the ODI World Cup as he feels it could bring added pressure to him. The Indian team is all set to take on Afghanistan in their second ODI World Cup contest on Wednesday (Oct 11) in New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. Pandya, an integral part of the Playing XI, has been India’s big-game player with his batting and bowling abilities.

Manjrekar highlights key factor

"My view is that, unless there is a compelling reason, I don't like Hardik Pandya as your third seamer. I think he also feels the pressure if he is the third seamer," Sanjay Manjrekar said during a discussion on Star Sports.

"What is likely to happen is that if the pitch is similar to the one that we had in that South Africa-Sri Lanka game, which was a belter, there was nothing there for the spinners, I don't see Ashwin playing on that surface."

In 83 matches for India, the all-rounder has scored 1 769 runs while scalping 80 wickets.

India could gamble in the Delhi match on Wednesday (Oct 11) if they go with an unchanged Playing XI from their win against Australia. India played three spinners Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, and Ravindra Jadeja in the Australia contest. However, if they play with the same team, Hardik’s role as a pace bowler becomes more important to the side.

India will take on Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in the city on Wednesday, having got the better of Australia on Sunday by six wickets.

On the flip side, Afghanistan will look to bounce back from their defeat against Bangladesh in the opening match. They were beaten by six wickets as well in the adverse outfield conditions of Dharamshala on Saturday.

ODI World Cup 2023: Former cricketer concerned over Hardik Pandya's bowling duties before Afghanistan clash

India got off to a winning start in the home ODI World Cup on Sunday (Oct 8) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Taking on the five-time winners Australia, Rohit Sharma-led India were asked to bowl first and rode on Ravindra Jadeja's three-fer and two wickets each from Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah to bundle out the visitors for 199 in 49.3 overs. In reply, India were tottering at 2 for 3 before Virat Kohli's 85 and KL Rahul's 97 not out took them home with six wickets, and 52 balls, to spare.

Now, the Rohit-led Men in Blue will lock horns with Afghanistan in their second outing at the national capital New Delhi on Wednesday (Oct 11). Talking about Afghanistan, they fell flat in their tournament-opener, losing to Bangladesh in Dharamshala by six wickets after being out for 156. For them to give a good fight versus Team India, they need their batters to stand tall and pull off an all-round effort.

IND vs AFG, Head-to-head record in ODI World Cup

So far, both sides have met only once in the ODI World Cup history. In the 2019 edition, Kohli-led India only managed 224 for 8 after opting to bat first in Southampton. In reply, Rashid Khan-starrer Afghans were bundled out for 213 to lose by 11 runs with Mohammed Shami taking a hat-trick.

Pitch conditions and result prediction:

The fresh pitches at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, prepared using black soil, has made the surface more batting-friendly. Expect another high-scoring affair -- especially if India bat first -- with dew assisting the team batting second as well. It will be interesting to see what the captain winning the toss chooses to do.

India can also consider using a spinner less with one of Shardul Thakur or Mohammed Shami coming in. Overall, Shubman Gill-less India are expected to emerge on top with less hiccups.

Predicted Playing XIs:

According to Dav Whatmore, Sri Lanka's 1996 World Cup-winning coach and WION's in-house expert, the potential XIs should be as follows:

India XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Hardik Pandya (vc), Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj

After the win, many former cricketers and experts of the game lauded Rahul and Kohli for battling a tough period early in the run-chase, buying out some time in the middle, keeping the scoreboard ticking before taking on the attack.

Talking about Rahul, the keeper-batter has been in exceptional form ever since he made his international comeback -- from a hip injury suffered in IPL 2023 -- during the Asia Cup. Since his return, he has had scores of 111*, 39, 19, 58*, 52, 26 and 97*. Thus, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan lavished huge praise on the 31-year-old Rahul.

'KL Rahul doesn't seem like the Rahul who used to take pressure before'

Speaking exclusively to Star Sports, Irfan analysed Rahul's successful approach post his return and said, "He's been looking very calm. He doesn't seem like the Rahul who used to take pressure before, now he looks like he's soaking that pressure, and it can be seen in the result. And because of that, he doesn't even seem like he's going to get out while he is batting. He's getting beaten less. That doesn't mean one doesn't get beaten."

He added, "There seems to be control, he's finding the singles, playing the big shots, he's also using the sweep shots, seems to be having a lot of time while pulling the ball. He has worked a lot on his technique, but most importantly he looks like a much better version of himself than before."

KL Rahul looks like a much better version of himself, says Irfan Pathan after India beat Australia in CWC 2023

Rohit Sharma-led India beat Australia in match 5 of ICC ODI World Cup 2023, on Sunday (October 8), at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Being asked to bowl first, India bundled out the Aussies for 199 in 49.3 overs and chased down the score with six wickets courtesy of Virat Kohli's 85 and KL Rahul's unbeaten 97. At one stage, India were tottering at 2 for 3 before Kohli-Rahul's 165-run fourth-wicket stand propelled the home team to a convincing victory over the five-time World Cup winners.

After the match, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag hailed Kohli and KL Rahul. He, in particular, praised the No. 3 batter and stated that Kohli always performs on the big stage for the Men in Blue.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, Sehwag stated, "Both Virat Kohli and KL Rahul played exceptionally well. Their partnership was fantastic. Both of them scored hundreds together against Pakistan as well and stitched together a great partnership. But this time, it came under a lot of pressure and was in a crunch situation."

'Virat Kohli's hunger to score increases in World Cups'

The former cricketer further opined on Kohli, "What can I say about Virat Kohli? Jahan matter bade hote hain, wahan King Kohli khade hote hain (Virat Kohli always performs on the big stage). Virat likes to perform on the big stage. His hunger to score increases in World Cups. I was quite surprised to see him get out at 85. He likes to stay till the end. He will be quite disappointed."

Sehwag added, "A 34-year-old Virat told Rahul to play like Test cricket here. However, Kohli used to tell me the same in 2008. He would ask me to play a bit slowly, like Test cricket. That is his nature. He likes to take his time before going for big shots. This has made him such a big player. He plays according to the situation and knows that even if he takes a few balls, he can cover up later in the innings."

For India, Ravindra Jadeja (3 for 28), Kuldeep Yadav (2 for 42) and Jasprit Bumrah (2 for 35) led the charge with the ball and restricted the Aussies for a below-par total. During their run-chase, India were tested but would be happy to emerge out victorious. They will now face Afghanistan on Wednesday (Oct 11) in New Delhi, India.

'Their unwavering faith in us...': Ravindra Jadeja lauds Indian fans, hopeful to win CWC 2023 at home

India faced Australia in match 5 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 on Sunday (Oct 8) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. It was both the teams' opening games where Rohit Sharma & Co. won by six wickets, with 52 balls to spare, to get off their campaign with a winning start. Opting to bat first, Pat Cummins-led Australia only managed 199 in 49.3 overs as Ravindra Jadeja (3 for 28) stood tall along with two wickets each from Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav. In reply, India were in trouble and reeling at 2 for 3 before Virat Kohli (85) and KL Rahul (97 not out) took India home.

The duo got together with captain Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and No. 4 batter Shreyas Iyer returning to the pavillion without opening their accounts. While Kohli was dropped early in his innings, with Mitchell Marsh giving him a reprieve, Rahul and he didn't give the Aussies any further chance and stitched an impressive 165-run third-wicket stand. Eventually, Rahul and Hardik Pandya remained unbeaten to take India to a winning start. After the match, Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar heaped praise on Rahul-Kohli and mentioned where Australia lost the plot.

Tendulkar wrote on X, formerly Twitter, "I was surprised to see Australia bat first after winning the toss. Commendable performance by the Indian bowlers to restrict them to 199. Australia started well but I felt they missed a left-arm spinner on this surface. The partnership between Virat and Rahul sealed the game for us. They very smartly took their time and were able to execute some superb shots. The ball surely came onto the bat much better in the second half of the game. Congratulations to #TeamIndia on a good start."

CWC 2023: Sachin Tendulkar heaps praise on Virat Kohli-KL Rahul, points out where Australia went wrong

Team India opened their campaign in the ODI World Cup 2023 with a comfortable six-wicket win over Pat Cummins-led Australia in match 5 on Sunday (October 8) in Chennai. In addition, Dilip lauded Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan for their overall fielding efforts.

Our bowlers used the conditions perfectly and we knew there would be assistance for everyone, even the seamers got some reverse, the spinners bowled in the nice areas and all in all it was a great effort. I was (nervous), you don't want to start your innings like that, credit to the Aussies bowlers as they bowled in good areas but some loose shots as well, when you have that kind of target you want to score as much as possible in the powerplay, but credit to Virat and KL on how they went about the chase. That is going to be the challenge for us as a team, moving to different conditions and adapting, whoever suits the conditions will have to come and do the job. Chennai never disappoints, they love their cricket and for them to sit in that heat and come out and cheer for the team says a lot."

Team India opened their campaign in the ODI World Cup 2023 with a comfortable six-wicket win over Pat Cummins-led Australia in match 5 on Sunday (October 8) in Chennai. Being asked to bowl first at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Rohit Sharma & Co. bundled out the Aussies for a paltry 199 in 49.3 overs with Ravindra Jadeja taking a three-fer whereas Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah returned with two wickets each. In reply, India were tottering at 2 for 3 before Virat Kohli's 85 and KL Rahul's unbeaten 97* took India home with 52 balls to spare. After the match, Kohli received the best fielder of the match award in the team presentation in the dressing room. Kohli was proactive as ever in the field and accounted for two catches, removing Mitchell Marsh and Adam Zampa. Thus, the fielding coach T Dilip handed over the medal and revealed, in a BCCI video shared on all social media platforms, that the team management had been trying for a while to arrange laurels for fielding efforts. In addition, Dilip lauded Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan for their overall fielding efforts.
South Africa saw off a valiant Sri Lankan side in their first ODI World Cup 2023 contest as they registered a 102-run win on Saturday (Oct 7). The contest at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi saw South Africa smash the record for the highest total by a team in a World Cup match while Aiden Markram hit the fastest hundred in the tournament’s history. Sri Lanka went down fighting having scored 326 runs in response to the Proteas’ record-breaking 428/5.

1996 champions Sri Lanka were tasked to chase a record total of 429 runs as batters scored runs left, right, and centre. Chasing the target, Sri Lanka lost Pathum Nissanka (0) in the first over, putting a spanner in the work while Kusal Perera (7) was also judged LBW, but used the DRS to remain at the helm. Kusal Mendis (76) would then take charge of the side that qualified from the qualifiers. He along with Sadeera Samarawickrama (23) led the Lanka side to the triple-figure mark.

Interestingly, with the gap slipping away from Sri Lanka Charith Asalanka (79) played an important role as he helped his side steer past 200. Later in the innings, skipper Dasun Shanaka (68) played a handy knock along with Dasun Shanaka (33) to help Sri Lanka reduce the deposit of the defeat. It was a valiant effort by Lanka, despite them chasing a mountainous 429 runs in the hot conditions of Delhi.

Gerald Coetzee was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets while the trio of Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, and Keshav Maharaj ended with two scalps each.

Earlier in the South Africa innings, Quinton de Kock (100), Rassie van der Dussen (108), and Aiden Markram (106) scored tons to lead their side to 428/5. ODI World Cup 2023: Ravi Ashwin picked, Gill miss out as Australia bat first against India in Chennai

Australia skipper Pat Cummins has opened up on his team’s tactics as they prepare for the crunch clash against India in the ODI World Cup on Sunday (Oct 8) at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Cummins will look to put behind the recent disappointments against India while insisting his team has plans to counter the opposition. India are expected to play with three spinners which could be a big headache for Australia.

Cummins commits to plan vs India

“It's no doubt helpful playing a lot here, not only for Australia but IPL. I've probably played more white-ball cricket in India than I have in Australia over the last 10 years, so it's conditions we know really well. And I think the positive thing is that we've played some really good one-day cricket against India over here over the last few years so we can draw back on that,” said Cummins.

India skipper Rohit Sharma on the eve of the clash in Chennai spoke on the team’s plan where he hinted at making use of three spinners. If this is the case, the Men in Blue could make use of Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep, and Ravindra Jadeja in the same Playing XI.

“Yeah, they're a good bowling lineup, especially here in home conditions. So, they're going to be challenging. The good thing is we've played them a lot. So, our batters will have their plans. And again, we've had success against them a few times. They've bowled well against us a few times as well,” Cummins added.

India and Australia recently squared off in a three-match ODI series, where the home side emerged victorious 2-1. India are expected to be without Shubman Gill who is suffering from dengue and has not trained with the side. His availability remains a big issue for Team India despite having notable players as back-up. It is understood, that if Gill is not available, Ishan Kishan will open with skipper Rohit while there will be room for either Suryakumar Yadav or Shreyas Iyer in the Playing XI.

Pakistan have kicked off their ICC ODI World Cup 2023 campaign on Friday (Oct 6) versus the Netherlands at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad. Being asked to bat first, the Men in Green were off to a poor start as they lost their top three in a jiffy. Fakhar Zaman, who has seen a dip in form of late, Imam-ul-Haq and captain Babar Azam were back in the hut as the 1992 winners were reeling at 38 for 3 as Logan van Beek, Paul van Meekeren and Colin Ackermann chipped in with regular wickets. CWC '23: Pakistan lose top-order in a jiffy versus Netherlands in Hyderabad face-off - Watch video

England were thrashed by New Zealand by nine wickets in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition's opening game on Thursday (October 5) in Ahmedabad. While many believed the defending champions would start with a win, the Kane Williamson-less New Zealanders put up a clinical show to chase down 283 by nine wickets with 82 balls to spare. The Kiwis rode on Devon Conway's 152 not out and Rachin Ravindra's unbeaten 123 to claim a win without breaking much sweat.

Tom Latham-led Black Caps won the toss and opted to bowl first. England were off to a good start and were 94 for 2 before being reduced to 188 for 5. At 221 for 5, England still had a lot of batting to come but they only managed 282/9 when they could have crossed the 300-run mark with ease. Matt Henry's 3 for 48 and two wickets each from Mitchell Santner and Glenn Phillips. In the run-chase, NZ lost opener Will Young for 0 (1) but nothing worked from there on for the English side as Conway-Rachin's unbeaten 273-run second-wicket stand ended the game in a flash.

Speaking on Cricbuzz after the match, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag removed Jos Buttler-led England from his top four following their crushing defeat in the CWC '23 opener. He said, "I had kept England in my top four, but I think I need to change my prediction now. Yes, they can lose two matches and still make it to the semi-finals. However, their net run rate has taken a massive hit. So, they will need to beat another team by a big margin."

Reviewing the match, Sehwag opined, "The wicket didn't change; New Zealand just batted better. The England batters' shot selection was poor. New Zealand, on the other hand, lost just one wicket. The two batters remained till the end because their shot selection was very good. That made a big difference. I'd say that we have already seen one upset in this World Cup, and they (NZ) also took revenge for the 2019 World Cup final."

At the post-match presentation, a dejected England captain Buttler said, "Disappointing day, outplayed by New Zealand, tough to take that defeat. One loss, still a long tournament. Lot of guys in our team have played a lot of cricket. We have beaten teams this way before and we have been at the end of such results before. I thought we were well below par, not judging by the way New Zealand batted, because we were aiming for somewhere around 330. It was a good wicket to bat and I think it got even better in the second innings. Tough to build any pressure with the start they got. We lacked being clinical with our executions. Some of those dismissals, the right shots weren't quite executed. We will keep it positive, we'll keep playing our way, can't be too defensive but we weren't clinical in shot selection and execution."

England will now play Bangladesh in Dharamshala on Tuesday (October 10).

We will keep it positive, we'll keep playing our way, can't be too defensive but we weren't clinical in shot selection and execution." 'Need to change my prediction': Sehwag removes England from his top 4 after their big loss in CWC '23 opener

New Zealand rode on Rachin Ravindra's all-round show (123 not out and 1 for 76) and opener Devon Conway's 152* to thrash defending champions England by nine wickets in pursuit of 283 in the CWC 2023 opener on Thursday (October 5) in Ahmedabad. After the match, Rachin opened up on the influence of Indian stalwarts Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid on his name. The New Zealand all-rounder was named after Dravid and Tendulkar, with the two first names coming together to form ‘Rachin’. Further, the Player-of-the-Match revealed that Master Blaster Sachin was his idol while growing up.

At a press conference after the match, the 23-year-old Rachin stated, "I think those two are pretty special cricketers. Obviously, I've heard a lot of stories and watched a lot of footage and the influence from my parents and the old-school Indian cricketers was pretty cool Obviously, I idolised Sachin Tendulkar. I think a lot of people did. I think the way he batted and his technique was beautiful to watch."

Sachin Tendulkar was definitely the idol, says Rachin Ravindra after NZ thrash England in CWC '23 opener

In the opening game of CWC 2023 edition, in Ahmedabad, England faced New Zealand where the Kiwis thrashed the defending champions by nine wickets in pursuit of 283 on Thursday evening (October 5). Jos Buttler-led England were asked to bat first and the batting-heavy line-up only managed 282 for 9 in 50 overs which was later chased down by New Zealand with nine wickets and 82 balls to spare.

With the ball, England got an early wicket in the form of Will Young for 0 (1) before Rachin Ravindra (123*)-Devon Conway (unbeaten 152)'s 273-run second-wicket stand ended the game in a jiffy.

Speaking on SENQ Breakfast, Australia's former Test captain Tim Paine reacted to England's heavy defeat and stated that most Australian cricket fans would have enjoyed England getting 'smashed' like they did. "They smashed them. I watched it. I wanted to have a bit of an early night last night, we got home from Allan Border field at about 10 o'clock and I thought, ‘I'll have a good sleep’, but it was just too good to watch. Watching England get smacked around the park. I stayed up for most of it and enjoyed it like I'm sure most Australian cricket fans did and hopefully it continues," Paine said.

Paine also pointed out that dew had set in at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday evening, making it easy for New Zealand batters Rachin and Conway to go after Mark Wood -- England's pace spearhead.

"In India, that can be the issue. The faster you go over there, the harder it is to defend grounds. They're small grounds. They're very flat wickets. It looked like last night, it was sort of a bit dewy. So, it was sliding onto the bat, and he was bowling 150 km/h. It looked like if he didn't hit the stumps, it was just flying away for four whether they hit in the middle of the bat or not."

Wood ended with figures of 0 for 55 in five overs. For England, they will like to forget this match at the earliest as they next face Bangladesh in Dharamshala on Tuesday (October 10).

'Just too good to watch': Tim Paine on England's humiliating loss vs New Zealand in CWC '23 opener

England skipper Jos Buttler has played down the champion's tag as his side enters the ODI World Cup in India. Buttler, who will lead England in ODI World Cup will see his team face New Zealand in the curtain-raiser clash on Thursday (Oct 5). According to him, his side is not trying to defend anything despite entering the tournament with the champion's tag. The ODI World Cup will kick start on Thursday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad with England and New Zealand playing in a repeat of the 2019 edition’s final.

Buttler plays down champion's tag

"We're not trying to defend anything. We're trying to go there and win a World Cup. We're in exactly the same position as every other team,” Buttler said on the eve of the tournament.

"I have said lots of times, I don't see us as defending champions.”

Buttler’s England has been in fine form recently where they beat New Zealand 3-1 in the ODI series and will have momentum on their side. Buttler could become the second captain to win the ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup after India’s MS Dhoni, with the Indian star completing the set in 2011.

On the horizon, England could also become the third team to defend the ODI World Cup after West Indies and Australia. They are in fine form ahead of the World Cup opener but will sweat on the fitness of star man Ben Stokes. The returning star is not 100 per cent going into the match, with the final call to be taken on match day. England’s warm-up matches saw them draw a blank against India after rain played spoilsport while the Bangladesh contest saw them win by four wickets on the DLS method.

In the opposition, Kane Williamson will be a big miss for New Zealand who won’t play the opening clash while Tim Southee will also miss out. New Zealand will eye for revenge on multiple fronts having lost the final in the 2019 edition in an excruciating manner. The curtain-raiser clash will start at 2:00 PM IST with the toss taking place at 1:30 PM at the Narendra Modi Stadium. This will be the 11th meeting between the sides at the ODI World Cup, with both England and New Zealand winning five matches each.

CWC 2023: England skipper Jos Buttler plays down champions tag, says 'we're not trying to defend anything'

The ODI World Cup 2023 edition kicked off on Thursday (October 5) with the defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad. On Friday (October 6), Babar Azam-led Pakistan will face the Netherlands at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Ahead of the clash, Dav Whatmore -- Sri Lanka's ODI World Cup-winning coach and former Australian cricketer -- pointed out that the Men in Green need to improve in the fielding department in order to progress ahead in the marquee competition in India.

Speaking to Wion, Whatmore opined on how Pakistan is shaping up for the 50-over showpiece event. Pakistan enter the CWC '23 edition on the back of a disastrous run in the Asia Cup and two back-to-back defeats in the warm-up games. However, the No. 2 ranked ODI side is backed as one of the strongest contenders due to the subcontinental conditions and a well-oiled side.

Whatmore reflected on their warm-up losses and stated, "Look, they should have won that game (versus New Zealand in the warm-ups). But it is at the same ground where they open up their campaign versus the Netherlands (in Hyderabad). Anybody would argue the fact that they will win. They should win comfortably tomorrow. I think they lost a bit of confidence versus New Zealand. Against Australia in their second warm-up match, they whacked them over the park. Australia allowed them to come close with their bowling effort (Pakistan managed 337 in pursuit of 352). Hence, confidence would have been jolted a bit. But, they should do well tomorrow which will lift their confidence."

Whatmore further stated on Pakistan's unpredictable tag and said, "They have been inconsistent. They have been guilty in that regard. But in this tournament, where the focus will be on them from the whole world, they will be as consistent as they possibly can."

The former SL coach mentioned the area of concern for Babar & Co. In this regard, he asserted, "Their fielding historically has never been up to the mark. They have been guilty of some bad pictures of fielding. That department of the game can improve surely. On the batting, they have done well. They have got over 300 in both practice games. They fell short versus the Kiwis and had some easy bowling to hit versus the Aussies but their batting is not too good. They know their roles and if they get good starts, they have a good platform to really launch in the last ten overs -- like every other team."

Pakistan were extremely poor in the field versus the Aussies in their last warm-up encounter in Hyderabad. They will like to start afresh in their tournament-opener versus the Dutch on Friday.
