Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has drawn comparisons between Indin skipper Rohit Sharma and the legendary MS Dhoni as he hailed Hitman for being 'cool as cucumber' as a leader. Rohit, who was recently appointed as India's captain across all three formats, has had a fantastic start to his stint as the skipper of the side.

Rohit has led India to back-to-back three T20I series wins against New Zealand, West Indies and Sri Lanka while also winning his first ODI series as full-time captain 3-0 against West Indies. The ongoing two-match Test series between India and Sri Lanka is Rohit's first as the Test captain of the side and India are leading the two-match rubber 1-0 after an emphatic win in the first Test in Mohali.

Lauding Rohit, Pathan said the current Indian skipper has undergone a massive transformation since being snubbed from the Indian team for the 2011 ODI World Cup. Rohit had made his India debut much before the 2011 World Cup but had failed to establish his credentials to make the cut into the World Cup squad.

“Every player goes through that phase in his career when he isn’t able to perform and only left with disappointment. The current team has two such players: Jadeja and Rohit. Jadeja hasn’t looked back since the 2017 Champions Trophy final… and Rohit has changed a lot since the 2011 World Cup snub. There used to be a lot of talk about his talent. But he himself would say that he was much more than just talent," Pathan told Star Sports while speaking about the rise of both Rohit and Ravindra Jadeja.

Ever since the 2011 World Cup snub, Rohit has gone on to become one of the best batters in the world when it comes to white-ball cricket. He is currently one of India's most consistent performers across formats and has also been terrific as a captain.

Pathan compared Rohit with Dhoni, who is known as captain cool for his ability to stay calm under the most pressure situations. Dhoni is the only captain with all three major ICC limited-overs trophies to his name. The former captain led India to memorable triumphs at the 2011 ODI World Cup in 2011, T20 World Cup in 2007 and the Champions Trophy in 2013.

Virat Kohli's average in Test cricket dropped below fifty for the first time in five years after he was dismissed cheaply once again in the ongoing pink-ball Test against Sri Lanka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Kohli was dismissed on 13 off 16 balls by left-arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama on Day 2 of the second Test between the two sides.

It was once again a delivery that kept low which got the better of Kohli as the Bengaluru crowd went silent after the batting maestro's dismissal. While the wait for his 71st international century got extended yet again, Kohli's poor show meant he is no more the only batter in the world to average over fifty across all three formats of the game.

On a pitch that has uneven bounce and has assisted the bowlers, Kohli made a cautious start in India's second innings on Sunday. However, a lowly delivery from Jayawickrama sent him back. Kohli scored 23 and 13 in the two innings respectively as his average in the longest format dropped to 49.95.

The former India skipper needed at least 43 runs across two innings in the second Test to ensure his average remained above 50. However, he failed to do so much to the disappointment of the crowd in Bengaluru. Kohli at present has 8043 runs in 101 Tests at an average of 49.95 for India.

Kohli has been enduring a lean patch in Test cricket over the last couple of years. He has averaged only 28.03 in 17 Test matches from the start of 2020. His last hundred in the longest format came against Bangladesh in the pink-ball Test in Kolkata in November 2019.

Despite Kohli's underwhelming show with the bat, India are in a strong position in the Test match as they rode on half-centuries from Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer to post 303/9 (declared) on the board. India have handed Sri Lanka a target of 447 runs and are favourites to win the game.

West Indies held their nerves to pull off a draw in the first Test against England at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Saturday. Asked to chase down a target of 286 runs in their second innings, West Indies were in a spot of bother on Day 5 having been reduced to 67/4 inside 35 overs. However, Nkrumah Bonner and Jason Holder put on an unbeaten stand to help the hosts salvage a draw in the first Test.

Joe Root-led England took the game down the wire and didn't accept a draw till the final over of the day was bowled. Despite West Indies having six wickets in their hands heading into the final hour of play, England decided to continue bowling. Root & Co's tactics baffled many as the pitch was offering nothing and West Indies had as many as six wickets in hands.

West Indies' T20 World Cup-winning captain Carlos Brathwaite was not at all impressed by England's decision to continue bowling till the final over of the day as he slammed Root & Co for being 'disrespectful'. Brathwaite alleged England would not have done the same had there been a team like India or Australia opposite them in the game.

"If I were a senior player in the West Indies dressing room, I would have found it a bit disrespectful that in the last hour, with two set batsmen playing as they were and the pitch offering nothing, England still felt they could get six wickets, going all the way down to five balls left," Brathwaite said on BTSport.

"Would England have done that if it were an Ashes Test? Would they have done that against India, New Zealand, Pakistan? I think the answer is no, so why have they done it against us?" - he added.

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif feels Virat Kohli's rough patch with the willow has extended for too long and that now it's time for him to score big runs for India. Kohli has not enjoyed the best of form in international cricket over the last couple of years as the wait for his 71st international century has extended over two years.

Kohli scored his last international ton in November 2019 and has since failed to reach the triple-figure mark across formats despite having gotten great starts on several occasions. In his last outing which was also Kohli's 100th Test, the batting maestro looked in fine touch as he got off to a good start. However, Kohli once again failed to get a big knock.

Kohli was dismissed on 45 in his 100th Test as he was cleaned up by Sri Lankan spinner Lasith Embuldeniya. As his century drought continues to extend, Latif has backed Kohli to score a century soon. Latif also spoke about Kohli's struggles and said he needs to get back among the runs soon.

“It is time for him to score runs. The bad patch has gone for too long. He has got a great chance here. People are very concerned over his century, but I think he will be slamming a hundred either in this Test or in the next two-three games,” Latif said in a video on his official YouTube channel.

“He had internal problems and lost his captaincy, went out of form. The opposition also works on his weakness and they are bowling him according to the plan," added the former Pakistan skipper.

Further decoding Kohli's struggles with the willow over the last couple of years, Latif said the former India skipper plays with an open stance and has the tendency of going after deliveries outside off which has worked against him. Latif advised Kohli to take help of data analytics to work on his weakness.

“Some players don't believe in data when they're in a good patch. It is time for him to go data analysts. The problem is he has an open stance and chasing deliveries outside off. The opposition has worked on this weakness,” said Latif.

“He has to lessen the number of dot balls he plays. He has to be more aggressive. He has to fasten his initial movement. He is farther from the ball with his open stance. Being late is fine, being very late is dangerous," he added.

India will be looking to continue their winning run and clean sweep the two-match Test series 2-0 when they lock horns with Sri Lanka in the second and final Test at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The second Test, which will be a pink-ball game, is all set to get underway from Saturday (March 12).

India produced a dominant display in the series-opener in Mohali to outclass the visitors by an innings and 222 runs. Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was the hero of India's thumping win as he slammed an unbeaten 175 and picked up a total of nine wickets across Sri Lanka's two innings.

The likes of Rishabh Pant, R Ashwin and Hanuma Vihari also impressed as India went 1-0 up in the two-match rubber. India have included fit-again all-rounder Axar Patel in their squad ahead of the second Test in the place of Kuldeep Yadav. Axar is likely to walk into the XI and might replace Jayant Yadav, who had an average outing in the first Test.

While India will count on their spinners, the hosts also possess a deadly pace attack consisting of the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj among others. Siraj, who had missed out on a spot in the XI for the first Test, might return to the team for the pink-ball game at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

After a fabulous outing in Mohali, Jadeja will be hoping to continue his exceptional run in the second Test. However, the all-rounder didn't fully take part in India's training session on Thursday indicating some discomfort on his right quadricep. In case he is not fit to take the field, Axar might take Jadeja's spot in the XI, allowing India to play three pacers.

There is unlikely to be any changes in India's batting order with Hanuma Vihari and Shreyas Iyer both keeping their spots in the absence of the likes of Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja.

India's predicted playing XI for pink-ball Test against Sri Lanka:

Axar Patel to replace Jayant Yadav? India's predicted playing XI for pink-ball Test against Sri Lanka

Virat Kohli became the 12th Indian to enter the 100-Test club. Kohli also completed 8,000 runs in the format during his historic Test. He is the sixth and fifth-fastest Indian to enter the elusive 8000-run club. Kohli, after 100 Tests, averages over 50 with 27 tons and 28 fifties.

Reliving Virat Kohli's journey as he enters 100-Test club

Former India captain Virat Kohli has been one of the most consistent performers for the team with the bat in the longest format of the game over the years. Kohli recently became the 12th Indian player to complete the milestone of 100 Test matches for the country when he led the team out in the first Test against Sri Lanka at the PCA Stadium in Mohali.

One of the most decorated players in the history of the game, Kohli is regarded as one of the best batters across all formats at present. Despite not having been in the best of form over the last couple of years, Kohli has been among the runs for India across all three formats of the game and continues to achieve remarkable feats in his international career.

After an average outing in his 100th Test where Kohli failed to notch up a big score, the batting maestro will be looking to bring an end to his century drought when India lock horns with Sri Lanka in the second and final Test of the two-match series in Bengaluru.

Ahead of the day-night Test, former India coach Anshuman Gaekwad has heaped praise on Kohli and backed him to play 200 Test matches for India. Gaekwad believes Kohli's spot in the Indian Test team is untouchable as he is on top of his fitness and that he won't be surprised if the batting maestro goes on to play 200 Tests for the country.

"It is a great achievement to play 100 Test matches and still keep going the way he has. The big difference is the experience he has gained by playing in 100 Test matches. As long as he is fit, nobody can touch him. He is so conscious of his fitness that I won't be surprised if he goes to 200 because of the kind of series of matches they are playing, the frequency is so high that it is a question of another seven or eight years, and he will land up close to 200. Am sure he will be fit and play for the next 10 years, the way he is going," Gaekwad told News18.

Ravindra Jadeja was the hero of India's thumping win over Sri Lanka in the recently-concluded first Test of the ongoing two-match series between the two sides. Jadeja slammed an unbeaten 175 and picked up a total of nine wickets in the game as India thrashed Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs to go 1-0 up in the series.

Jadeja, who recently made his comeback from injury, looked in splendid touch and took the Sri Lankan bowlers to the cleaners during his brilliant knock. He looked well on course to slam his maiden double hundred in Test cricket before India decided to declare their first innings on 574/8 as Jadeja fell just 25 runs short of his double ton.

Nonetheless, his magnificent all-round show helped India outclass Sri Lanka by an innings to script a comprehensive win. While many lauded Jadeja for his fabulous knock of unbeaten 175, former India opener Gautam Gambhir was asked if it is the best knock the India all-rounder has played so far in his Test career.

While stating that 'stats can be misleading', Gambhir said he doesn't feel Jadeja's 175 not out is the best knock he has played in his career so far. Gambhir believes the star all-rounder's crucial half-centuries and other important knocks overseas would have made him more confident.

"I don't think so. I feel the innings Ravindra Jadeja played in Australia or the knocks he has played outside India, he will get more confidence from that. Stats can be very misleading," Gambhir explained.

"There was a time after the century where he was just milking - Dhananjaya de Silva, Asalanka and Embuldeniya were bowling but if you talk about Australia or England, the 40 or 50-run contributions there are probably much more important than this innings," added the former India opener.

Jadeja had a terrific outing in the Test match as he went on to break the legendary Kapil Dev's record for the highest individual score by an Indian batter in Tests while batting at number seven or below. He then went on to join the likes of Gary Sobers and Polly Umrigar in an elite list with his five wicket-haul in Sri Lanka's first innings.

Rohit-led India hammered Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs in the first Test of the ongoing two-match series to take a 1-0 lead.

Umrigar had led India to a clinical win against New Zealand by an innings and 27 runs in the 1955-56 season. Rohit is the second Indian skipper after him who has managed to achieve the feat.

The news of Australian cricket legend Shane Warne's sudden demise sent shockwaves across the cricketing world on Friday (March 04). Warne breathed his last after suffering a suspected heart attack in Thailand. The sudden passing away of one of the greatest cricketers of all time has left fans and players around the world mourning.

Besides being one of the best cricketers to have represented Australia, Warne was also the first captain to have won the Indian Premier League (IPL). Warne led Rajasthan Royals (RR) to their maiden IPL title in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2008. The Rajasthan Royals squad back then had a number of rising superstars including the likes of Indian all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Yusuf Pathan.

Warne was an admirer of both the Indian youngsters and had predicted that the duo will go on to become superstars of Indian cricket in the years to come. As it turned out, Warne's predictions did come true with both Pathan and Jadeja doing well in their respective international careers.

While Pathan was part of India's 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup-winning teams, Jadeja is one of the best all-rounders in the world at present. Noted commentator Harsha Bhogle recalled Warne's comments about Jadeja in 2008 when the Aussie spin legend had said that 'this kid is a superstar' while praising the Indian all-rounder.

India wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant missed out on his fifth Test hundred as he was dismissed for 96 off 97 balls during India's first innings on Day 1 of the ongoing first Test between India and Sri Lanka at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on Friday. Pant looked in great touch and was smacking the Sri Lankan spinners all around the park before falling short of a well-deserved ton by just 4 runs.

The left-hander came out to bat at number five for India when the hosts were 170/3 after Virat Kohli's dismissal for 45 off 76 deliveries. India lost Hanuma Vihari's wicket too soon after Pant's arrival as they were left reeling on 175/4 before the left-hander combined with Shreyas Iyer (27) to add 53 runs for the fifth wicket.

Pant went on to notch up his half-century after Iyer's departure and added another crucial stand of 104 runs with Ravindra Jadeja (45 not out) for the sixth wicket. He shifted gears after reaching his fifty and raced towards his hundred by smashing two sixes and two fours in the 76th over from Lasith Embuldeniya.

Pant looked set to reach his hundred comfortably, however, he was dismissed by Suranga Lakmal on 96. Pant has now been dismissed in the nervous 90s on five occasions in Test cricket and has equalled MS Dhoni's unwanted record. Dhoni and Pant are two Indian wicket-keeper batters with most dismissals in the nervous 90s in Test cricket.

While Dhoni scored six centuries in Test cricket, Pant has already slammed four hundreds in the longest format and is likely to finish with many more centuries in his career. He has been one of India's best performers with the bat in Test cricket for the last couple of years.

With the help of his 96 and crucial knocks from the likes of Vihari (58), Kohli (45) and Jadeja (45*), India finished with a strong total of 357 runs on the board on Day 1 of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Mohali. India will be looking to breach the 400-run mark on Day 2 of the Test match on Saturday.

Shane Warne passes away: Snippets from Australian spin wizard's life and career

Virat Kohli featured in his 100th Test when India locked horns with Sri Lanka in the two-match series opener on Friday (March 04) in Mohali. Coming out to bat at No. 4 in his historic Test match, after India won the toss andwere 80-2, Kohli stitched a valuable 90-run third-wicket stand with Hanuma Vihari (58) before departing for a well-made 76-ball 45.

Thus, Kohli could once again not break his two-year-long century drought at the international level. Nonetheless, the 33-year-old former captain isn't gutted by not scoring daddy hundreds and is content with churning out valuable performances for the team's sake. Speaking to the press after stumps on Day 1 of the first Test, with India well-placed at 357-6, Kohli stated that he is still 'performing consistently'.

He told after stumps on Day 1, "I am preparing exactly the way I have prepared all along. As long as I am batting well, I am not bothered at all. People look at milestones and talk about a lot of things which are just a conversation on the outside, I know for a fact that I have been involved in very important partnerships for the team in the recent past."

"Everyone's point of view is different, my point of view is very different at the moment. If people are not getting to see me getting those big scores game after game, it's probably down to their own expectations of me and the standards that have not been set randomly. I have been performing consistently and hence the expectations are there. Even today, that partnership of 90 was important for us after we were 2 down for 80-odd," Kohli pointed out.

These conversations always happen on the outside and they will continue to do so because we somehow are crazy about milestones and materialistic achievements. I certainly don't like that. I am batting well and that for me is the most important thing."

After Kohli and Vihari's dismissals, India rode on Rishabh Pant's attacking and entertaining 96 and Ravindra Jadeja's 45 not out to go to stumps at 357-6. They will now look to take the team score beyond the 450-run mark with a decent tail at their disposal.

I certainly don't like that. I am batting well and that for me is the most important thing." After Kohli and Vihari's dismissals, India rode on Rishabh Pant's attacking and entertaining 96 and Ravindra Jadeja's 45 not out to go to stumps at 357-6. They will now look to take the team score beyond the 450-run mark with a decent tail at their disposal.

I am not too worried about milestones, says Virat Kohli after big scores continue to evade him

On Friday (March 04), Virat Kohli added another feather to his illustrious hat by entering the elite 100-Test club as India took on Sri Lanka on Day 1 of the first Test. Among Indians, the 33-year-old ex-captain has become the 12th Test player to enter the elusive club. The right-hander, thus, joined a special list of Indians, comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar, VVS Laxman, Kapil Dev, Anil Kumble, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Ishant Sharma to have played 100, or more, matches in whites.

Ahead of Kohli's special feat, Little Master Gavaskar lavished huge praise on the former skipper for his achievements and compared him with an iconic Pakistani cricketer.

Talking to BCCI.TV, Gavaskar said, "Playing 100 Tests for your country is an incredible feeling, all of us when we were kids playing in the compounds of our house, we dream of playing for India. After playing for the country and you come to your 100th Test, it is an incredible feeling. Reaching the 100th Test means you have played for the country very successfully. No career will be smooth, there will be highs and lows."

"To provoke a fast bowler takes something else. Kohli is one of the rare batters who likes to sledge bowlers. He has been different, he likes to get under their skin. He is like Javed Miandad in that sense. His progress has been phenomenal, the consistency with which he has played, the 100th Test and beyond should be more of the same," pointed out the ex-Indian skipper.

Team India is entering a new phase in Test cricket with the commencement of the two-match home series versus Sri Lanka, which gets underway on March 04 in Mohali. While it will see the beginning of Rohit Sharma's Test captaincy era, the national side will also see a transition phase taking place after seniors such as Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ishant Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha got dropped prior to the series opener.

Talking about Rahane and Pujara, the duo had an ordinary run for quite some time and paid the price eventually. While the former est vice-captain Rahane didn't score a hundred since his MCG ton in late 2020, Pujara's last triple-figure knock came in early 2019. Since then, the senior pros got a long rope but couldn't do anything significant to be dropped before the SL home series.

Speaking ahead of the first Test in Mohali, during the press conference, captain Rohit spoke on the duo's absence and said, "Never easy to fill in big shoes of Rahane and Pujara. You can't put it in words what they have done for the team."

Revealing that both Pujara and Rahane can still make a comeback into the Test line-up, Rohit added, "Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane played big part in India becoming No.1 in Tests. It's just for now, we didn't consider them."

At present, India is at the No. 2 spot in ICC Test Rankings, behind top-ranked Pat Cummins-led Australia. However, the Indian team enjoyed considerable success in whites, topping the ICC Test rankings in the recent past, and Rohit acknowledged Pujara-Rahane's contributions to the side's success.

Rahane and Pujara played a huge part in India becoming No. 1 in Tests, says captain Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma is set to begin his Test captaincy era as India face Sri Lanka in the series opener in Mohali on March 04 (Friday). Rohit was appointed as India's full-time captain after Virat Kohli stepped down as the Test skipper post the India-South Africa series, in the African nation, held early this year.

While Rohit's credentials as a white-ball skipper is already known to the world, given his splendid record as IPL captain and magnificent start as full-time limited-overs captain, it will be the first time that Hitman will lead India in whites during the SL home series. The 34-year-old has a stiff job in hand to take Indian cricket forward in whites after his predecessor Kohli's flawless run as the leader in the red-ball format.

Kohli took over as India's captain after MS Dhoni's Test retirement and led the national side for seven years. Under him, India won their first-ever Test series on Australian soil, have an unassailable 2-1 lead over England in the incomplete five Tests in the United Kingdom (held last year), dominated at home and also ended as the top-ranked side in ICC Test Rankings for five successive years. Thus, Rohit has big shoes to fill and has his task cut out.

We are in a good position and over the last five years have done well. A lot of credit for that goes to Virat Kohli."

Rohit further lauded Kohli -- who is set to play his 100th Test in the series opener -- and said, "It has been a long journey for him and it has been a wonderful one. He has done exceedingly well in this format, he has changed so many things in the way the team is moving forward. It has been one hell of a ride for him and it will continue to be in the coming years."

Pakistan vs Australia Test series: Everything to know about squads, schedule, telecast, streaming details

Veteran India wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik has shared his two cents on Wriddhiman Saha's axing from India's Test squad. Saha was dropped from India's squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka at home along with other senior players like Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Ishant Sharma.

Saha later went on to reveal that he was told by head coach Rahul Dravid and chief selector Chetan Sharma that he is not in the Indian team's plans anymore as far as the longest format is concerned. Saha was asked to move on as the Indian team management wants to groom young wicket-keeper batter KS Bharat, who has replaced Saha in the squad.

Karthik sympathised with Saha after he was dropped and said it is a hard pill to swallow for any cricketer to be told that he is no more in the team's plans moving forward. Saha, who played majorly as a back-up keeper at the time of MS Dhoni, was once called the best wicket-keeper in the world by former India skipper Virat Kohli.

However, with Rishabh Pant's remarkable rise, Saha failed to cement his spot in the Test team even after Dhoni's retirement but managed to play 40 Tests for the Indian side.

"I'm pretty sure from wherever I've seen with Wriddhiman's interviews, he understands where this decision is coming from. I know no cricketer is going to accept that when you're being told to move on. It is a very hard one because this is what they've been doing day in and day out," Karthik told ICC.

"All of us want to represent the country and that is the burning desire for everybody. So when somebody comes in says, 'I think your time is done,' it can be a hard one to swallow. But it is understandable and you have to understand where the selectors, the coach and the captain are coming from," he added.

Karthik lauded Saha for being a great servant for Indian cricket and praised him for doing well while going about his business silently. In 40 Tests, Saha amassed 1353 runs, took 92 catches and effected 12 stumpings for India.

"Kudos to Wriddhiman Saha. I think he has been one of those brilliant, quiet servants of Indian cricket who has done so well over a period of years," said Karthik.

South Africa turned the tables on New Zealand with a 198-run victory in the second test in Christchurch on Tuesday, crushing the hosts` hopes of a breakthrough series win over the Proteas. Having suffered their second-worst test defeat in the first meeting in Christchurch, South Africa rebounded superbly at Hagley Oval, dismissing the Black Caps for 227 in their second innings just after tea on day five. Chasing a would-be world record victory target of 426 runs, New Zealand resumed on 94 for four in the morning and there was a flicker of hope they might save the match as wicketkeeper Tom Blundell and all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme reached lunch at 180 for five.

However, the home side`s resistance faded quickly after the break when both players tossed away their wickets by pulling paceman Marco Jansen to fielders. Jansen and pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada worked through the tail with the second new ball, before an untimely rain break brought an early tea with South Africa needing one wicket for victory.

Spinner Keshav Maharaj sealed the win by trapping Matt Henry lbw for a duck. Man of the Match Rabada said it was important his team stepped up after being thrashed in the opener. "It`s never easy playing against New Zealand and we knew what we had to do and I`m glad that we could get the job done," he added.

"In the first test we completely didn`t rock up ... We knew we had to win this one, at least to make it 1-1."
New Zealand seamer Henry, named Player of the Series, said the hosts were disappointed not to pick up their first test series win over the Proteas. "Obviously we had a lot hopes coming into this game but you just have to take my hat off to South Africa," said Henry.

"I thought they came back very strong and thoroughly deserved the second test. It was in the balance a lot, I think ... It really just kept swinging back into their favour. We kept fighting but it just wasn`t quite there in the end."

Lutho Sipamla earlier denied New Zealand number three Devon Conway his fourth test century, breaking a stubborn fifth-wicket partnership of 85 runs with Blundell. The Proteas` third seamer trapped Conway lbw for 92 and New Zealand lost a DRS referral when the batsman tried to overturn the decision.
Blundell had batted with poise and patience until he swung a half-hearted pull shot to give Temba Bavuma a simple catch at short midwicket.

De Grandhomme, who scored a century in the first innings, was out pulling straight to Wiaan Mulder at leg gully in Jansen`s next over. Jansen grabbed a third wicket when tail ender Kyle Jamieson was out for 12 slogging to Rabada in the deep.

Rabada returned to the attack, having Tim Southee top-edge to Sipamla at midwicket to be out for 17, leaving Maharaj to claim the final wicket for victory.

Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has reacted to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s decision to conduct Virat Kohli's 100th Test match for India behind closed doors in Mohali. The first Test of the upcoming two-match Test series between India and Sri Lanka in Mohali will be Kohli's 100th for the national side.

The first Test between the two sides is scheduled to get underway from March 04. While it will be a special occasion for Kohli, who is regarded as one of the best batters of the present era, BCCI's decision to not allow fans for the game has invited criticism from fans, who believe Kohli deserved to play his 100th Test in front of a crowd in Mohali.

Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) treasurer RP Singla on Saturday confirmed that fans will not be allowed inside the stadium for Kohli's milestone Test appearance. He informed that the decision was taken after a directive from the BCCI. While fans had expected better arrangements for Kohli's 100th Test, the former India captain will now make his 100th appearance in whites behind closed doors.

Gavaskar said it was disappointing to not have fans in the stadium for Kohli's 100th Test for India but insisted that the decision by the BCCI was taken in greater interest considering the recent increase in COVID-19 cases in and around the city.

"Any game that you play, you want the crowd to be there. India has played without any crowds in recent times. Any performer, be it an actor, be it a cricketer, wants to play in front of the crowd. The 100th Test is very very special. Disappointing that there is going to be no crowd, but I think the decision has been taken in the greater interest. The cases have increased in and around Mohali, where the match is going to be played," Sunil Gavaskar told Sports Today.

While a number of series and matches have been played behind closed doors in the last couple of years, BCCI's decision of conducting Kohli's 100th Test without fans has not gone down well with the BCCI as the recently-concluded T20I series between India and Sri Lanka was played in front of fans in Lucknow and Dharamshala.

Fans were also allowed inside the stadium during the T20I series between India and West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Disappointing that Virat Kohli's 100th Test will be played behind closed doors: Sunil Gavaskar

India have a very settled top order in T20Is heading into the upcoming edition of the ICC T20 World Cup which is scheduled to take place in Australia this year. While the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant are all but confirmed to feature in the top four, there is intense competition when it comes to remaining batting positions with a number of star batters in the fray.

The likes of Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson and Venkatesh Iyer among others are strong contenders for spots in the middle-order. Iyer, who was in magnificent form in the recently-concluded three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka with three back-to-back unbeaten half-centuries has increased the selection headache for the Indian team ahead of the T20 World Cup.

While the opening combination is all but certain to be that of skipper Rohit and vice-captain KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan has also presented a strong case with his ability to strike the ball from the word go and provide destructive starts at the top of the order. However, former Australia spinner Brad Hogg believes former skipper Virat Kohli should be opening the batting for the team if he part of the XI in T20Is.

Open with Kohli, Iyer at 3 and Pant at 4: Hogg

Hogg said Kohli should open the batting with Rohit for India in T20Is while Iyer can bat at number three and Pant can be sent in at number four. The former Australia spinner suggested Rahul be slotted in the middle order while suggesting that Suryakumar, who has been in terrific form over the last few months, can also play at number 5. Hogg said India can then play two all-rounders in Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya at 6 and 7.

"For me, if you're going to have Kohli in the team, he should be opening the batting with Rohit. I'd like to have Shreyas Iyer coming in at No.3 and Pant at No.4. Have to try to get KL Rahul in there as well at some stage. If Pandya is fit, he and Jadeja can feature at No.6 and 7," Hogg said.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to question senior wicket-keeper batter Wriddhiman Saha about his recent explosive comments about India head coach Rahul Dravid and board president Sourav Ganguly. After being dropped from India's Test side for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka at home, Saha had made some startling revelations about his conversations with Dravid and Ganguly.

The BCCI believes Saha has violated the terms in his central contract with his comments criticising Ganguly and Dravid. While the wicket-keeper batter had made his conversation with head coach Dravid public after being told that he might not be considered for selection in the Test team anymore, Saha also revealed that he had received assurance from Ganguly about his spot in the Test team being safe as long as the current BCCI president was at the helm.

Saha has said to have breached clause 6.3 of BCCI's annual contract which states that - "Player shall not make any comments about the game, officials, incidents that happened in the game, use of technology, selection matters or any other matter related to the game which is in opinion of the BCCI is adverse to and /or not in the interest of the game, team or BCCI in any media."

As per a report in PTI, the board is likely to question the senior wicket-keeper batter and ask for an explanation over his comments. While the BCCI has extended support to Saha after he received insulting messages from an unnamed journalist, the board is not happy with him for making his conversations with Dravid public over selection matters.

"Yes, there is a possibility that BCCI could ask Wriddhiman as to how he spoke on selection matters being a centrally contracted cricketer," BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal was quoted as saying by PTI.

"As far as the president is concerned, he had tried to motivate him. The board might like to know what made him go public with his dressing room conversations with coach Dravid," he added.

Teams at the women`s World Cup in New Zealand will be allowed to field a side with only nine players if their squad is hit by COVID-19, the governing International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Thursday.
New Zealand reported more than 6,000 new cases of COVID-19, with 250 hospitalisations, and the government expects the outbreak to peak in mid-March.

ICC head of events Chris Tetley said teams would be allowed to field nine players plus two female members of their support staff in case of a COVID-19 outbreak in their camps. "From a COVID-19 perspective, we need to be a little bit flexible, as far as the way in which we manage the game to take into account these unique circumstances," he said. "And if they have female substitutes from within their management team, we would allow two substitutes to play - non-batting, non-bowling - to enable a game to take place."
Teams have been granted three travelling reserves along with their 15-member squads.

While the ICC would consider rescheduling fixtures in case of any medical crisis in the eight-team tournament, Tetley said there could be "logistical constraints". "We`ll be asking teams to show maximum flexibility and we`ll be as flexible as possible if the need arises to fulfil our objective, which is to get the games on," he said.

He also announced unlimited Super Overs, which would prevent a repeat of the men`s 2019 World Cup final which England won on boundary countback after the match had ended in a tie. "We would have, were it necessary, unlimited super overs if we get to that point in the game. So we wouldn`t get to the boundaries countback," he added.

A former Indian model-turned-investor, Gurpreet Gill Maag, has filed a legal challenge in the High Court in London seeking damages amounting to millions of dollars from Indian Premier League (IPL) founder Lalit Modi over alleged deceit and breach of contract. Judge Murray Rosen QC is presiding over the trial, which opened in the Chancery Division this week, to determine whether Modi made false representations to secure investment for a worldwide cancer treatment project dating back to April 2018.

Modi has denied the allegations through written evidence and is also expected to make oral submissions during the course of the trial to counter the claims. According to court documents, Maag-owned special purpose vehicle (SPV) Quantum Care Ltd was pitched an attractive investment offer at a meeting at the Four Seasons Hotel in Dubai for Modi's specialist cancer treatment company Ion Care.

The court was told: In summary, the Maags' (Gurpreet and husband Daniel Maag) evidence is that Mr Modi informed them during the meeting that a number of well-known and influential individuals had agreed to act as patrons' of Ion Care, had agreed to participate in its management (as 'leaders') and had also made substantial financial commitments to the business, amounting to some USD 260 million. "Further, the Maags say Mr Modi told them that a number of influential individuals and celebrities had agreed to act as brand ambassadors' for Ion Care."

Being socially acquainted with London-based Modi, Maag domiciled in Singapore was invited to invest in a first friends and family round of fundraising for USD 2 million. Her company Quantum Care went on to invest USD 1 million on November 14, 2018, and the remaining USD 1 million was not invested as Ion Care's business never got off the ground. However, Maag says this meant losses for her as she was unable to invest that sum in other businesses.

"Quantum alleges in these proceedings that the representations made by Modi during the April 2018 meeting were false and that he knew they were false or was reckless as to whether they were false,? her lawyers claim. According to court submissions on behalf of Modi, the business of Ion Care - offering cancer treatment based upon a specific technology - was conceived by him following treatment provided to his wife, Minal, who suffered from cancer prior to her death in December 2018.

While the business did not succeed, he highlights that there is no complaint that the business model or technology upon which it was based were misrepresented. With reference to the allegation that his investor pitch involved false representations, Modi contests that it was indicative and aspirational ? a sketch of an idea and certainly not intended to be an authoritative catalogue of individuals who had signed up to represent Ion Care.

As to the representations which were said to have been made orally, he denies making them in the categorical terms alleged. His case is that he was talking to many potential investors, many of whom had shown an interest, and that he was merely giving an indication of that level of interest and its provenance.
The scope of the trial, estimated to last into next week, is to determine the question of causation, with the quantification of any damages to be addressed at a separate and subsequent stage.

Gill's Quantum Care is seeking repayment of the balance of its investment made into Ion Care in November 2018, amounting to USD 800,000 plus interest. In addition to its claim for $800,000, Quantum seeks to recover "substantial sums" in respect of its consequential losses, or the return the company would have received on the investments it would have made with the funds available to it but for the alleged misrepresentations.

Modi had relocated to London from India in 2010, amid scandals and controversies linked to the cricket IPL.

According to court submissions on behalf of Modi, the business of Ion Care - offering cancer treatment based upon a specific technology - was conceived by him following treatment provided to his wife, Minal, who suffered from cancer prior to her death in December 2018.

Senior India wicket-keeper batter Wriddhiman Saha has revealed the journalist who sent him insulting and threatening messages has not gotten in touch with him again or tendered an apology over his behaviour. Saha has refused to name the journalist for the sake of his family and career but is yet to receive an apology from the scribe.

The wicket-keeper batter had taken to Twitter last week to share a screenshot of his chat with the so-called journalist, who sent him insulting messages for refusing an interview with him. The tweet from Saha came just hours after he was dropped from India's Test squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.

Saha was quick to find support from the entire cricket fraternity as fans and former cricketers united to extend their support to him. The wicket-keeper batter was urged by many to name and shame the journalist. However, he decided against doing so on moral grounds. Saha even took to Twitter on Tuesday to thank everyone for their support and explained why he won't expose the journalist.
