Devon Conway's blazing blade and Moeen Ali's effective off-breaks beautifully complemented each other as Chennai Super Kings outclassed Delhi Capitals in every department of the game, winning their IPL match by a comprehensive 91-run margin.

Put in to bat, Conway completed a hat-trick of half-centuries with a superb 87 off 49 balls to set up a winning score of 208 for 6 in 20 overs.

The scoreboard pressure was always mounting on Capitals as they finally managed 117 in 17.4 overs with Moeen (3/13 in 4 overs) taking wickets of Mitchell Marsh (25 off 20 balls) and skipper Rishabh Pant (21 off 11 balls) in quick succession to finish the contest.

Mukesh Choudhary (2/22 in 4 overs), Simarjeet Singh (2/27 in 4 overs) and Dwayne Bravo (2/24 in 2.3 overs) then completed the formalities as CSK are now up to eight points from 11 games and can earn a maximum of 14 points if they win their remaining three games, which unfortunately doesn't look like being enough for play-off qualification.

Delhi Capitals remain on fifth position with 10 points and will now need to win all three remaining games and also expect a few other results to favour them if they harbour any hopes of qualification.

What has been a major issue with DC's 2022 performance is lack of consistency. There are days when they are brilliant and then on other days less than ordinary with inept performances.

KS Bharat (8 off 5 balls) was playing his first game and can be excused but the likes of Mitchell Marsh and Rishabh Pant have hardly done anything of note during the season and even 209 isn't a chaseable total eight out of 10 times, there wasn't a semblance of fight.

Pant was dismissed while trying to play against the turn while Marsh was holed out in the deep. By the time Rovman Powell was gone, the match was as good as over.

In fact, the track that looked as flat as a highway suddenly became difficult for strokeplay in the second half.

But when Conway was batting, it seemed like a walk in the park for CSK.

He hit seven fours and five sixes and also added 110 for the opening wicket with Ruturaj Gaikwad (41 off 33 balls) to lay the foundation for a big score.

Conway added another 59 runs for the second wicket with Shivam Dube (32 off 19 balls) before MS Dhoni (21 no off 8 balls) added insult to DC's injuries at the fag end.

The South Africa-born New Zealander has been one of the key players for an ageing CSK side in transition and has responded nicely to captain Dhoni's call of being a like-for-like replacement of Faf du Plessis.

What makes Conway a standout performer among most overseas recruits is his mastery over spinners which is an absolute must to be a consistent success in IPL.

Whether CSK make it to play-off this time or not, Conway in all likelihood will be serving the franchise for the next five years at least.

Along with Gaikwad, Conway showed how aesthetically pleasing stroke-play can destroy the confidence of rival bowlers.

There weren't any lap-scoops, switch hits, reverse flicks but shots within the 'V' with immaculate use of feet wile negotiating the spinners. It did help that DY Patil Stadium track resembled a highway due to its flat nature.

Kuldeep Yadav's (3-0-43-0) length was completely in disarray as Conway repeatedly came down the ground to loft the deliveries with disdain.

If the delivery was flighted, Conway would come down the track and hit it down the ground or wide of long-on. His deliveries were like cannon fodder as he was hit for four fours and two sixes in his first spell.

Conway repeated his 'dancing down the track' act in Kuldeep's second spell with another lofted six as DC bowlers were left short of answers on the day.

IPL 2022: Devon Conway, Moeen Ali shine in big CSK victory over Delhi Capitals

Devon Conway has been enjoying a good run of form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 and the Chennai Super Kings opener continued to impress as he scored a half century against Delhi Capitals on Sunday. This was the third consecutive fifty for the New Zealand international.

Thanks to this half century, Conway became the third cricketer ever to score three back-to-back fifties for CSK after Faf du Plessis and opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad. Gaikwad achieved the feat in 2020 while the current Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper du Plessis achieved it in 2021.

Conway, who was picked in the mega auction for INR 10 million, did not perform well towards the start of the tournament. But, in the last two matches, he has scored an unbeaten 85 against Sunrisers Hyderabad and he followed it up with a 56 against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Delhi Capitals will be looking to continue their winning run while Chennai Super Kings aim to regain their lost form as the two sides face each other in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Sunday.

While DC are currently fifth in the points table with 10 points and a healthy net run rate of 0.641, CSK continue to struggle in the ninth spot with just three wins from 10 encounters.

DC are coming off a brilliant show against Sunrisers Hyderabad where they posted a total above 200 with the help of David Warner and Rovman Powell. It was a special knock from the Australia opener and although he missed out on a century, Powell was able to bring up his first fifty of IPL 2022.

CSK, on the other hand, are coming off yet another defeat against Royal Challengers Bangalore with Devon Conway being the only positive from the match as he scored a gritty half century in 37 balls.

CSK vs DC, IPL 2022 prediction:

Considering the current run of form, Delhi Capitals will start as overwhelming favourites against the Delhi Capitals. David Warner has been enjoying a brilliant run of form and with the bowling producing a good show against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rishabh Pant & Co will be extremely confident going into the match.

CSK vs DC, IPL 2022 today match prediction: Who will win Chennai Super Kings vs Delhi Capitals clash?

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have not had the best of campaigns in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as they have managed only three wins in their first ten games so far this season. CSK had a disastrous start under new captain Ravindra Jadeja as they lost their first four games in a row before registering their first win of the season against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

While they were expected to gain some momentum after the win, CSK slipped to another defeat against Gujarat Titans in their next game before bouncing back to beat Mumbai Indians. They lost against Punjab Kings in their next game as their hopes to qualify for the playoffs were handed a huge blow.

With just two wins in their first eight games, the inevitable happened as Jadeja, who had taken over the baton from MS Dhoni at the start of the season, stepped down as captain to hand back the reins to the veteran wicket-keeper batter. Dhoni guided CSK to a much-needed win against Sunrisers Hyderabad in his first game as captain before the defending champions lost a close encounter against RCB to suffer their 7th defeat of the season.

With just three wins in ten matches so far, CSK are currently reeling at the ninth spot on the points table and have been virtually knocked out of the tournament. However, it is still mathematically possible that Dhoni & Co. can qualify for the playoffs if they can go on a miraculous run in their remaining matches this season.

How can Chennai Super Kings qualify for IPL 2022 playoffs?

CSK's loss against RCB in their last game can prove fatal to their chances of making it to the playoffs this season. While they are all but out of the race, there still remains a glimmer of hope for the four-time champions. CSK have only four matches remaining this season and will have to win all of them to get to 14 points.

However, that won't be enough and CSK will also need the results of some others teams to go their way to stand a chance of finishing in the top four. Besides maintaining a four-match winning streak in the remainder of the season, CSK will also have to ensure they win these matches by big margins to improve their net run rate, which can prove crucial going forward.

Explained! How MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings can still qualify for IPL 2022 playoffs

Ravindra Jadeja has been far from his best in the IPL 2022 edition. The former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain, who led the Yellow Army for the first in the 15th season and in only eight games, has struggled for runs as well as wickets (despite some tidy spells in the last two appearances).

So far, Jadeja has only 116 runs at 118.36 and has managed to claim only five wickets in ten encounters. Thus, many have blamed Jadeja's below-par all-round performances and leadership for the four-time winners and defending champions' struggles in this year's season. However, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has defended the star CSK all-rounder.

"I won't blame Jadeja for CSK'S troubles because this is not his team. When I haven't made the team, why would I take all the blame? Jaddu the captain was always going to be a question mark as he doesn't have experience of captaincy at any level. On top of it, you made a 'reunion' team," said Chopra on his Youtube channel.

Ahead of CSK's ninth game this season, versus the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Jadeja had relinquished captaincy and handed it back to his predecessor MS Dhoni. Under Dhoni, the Yellow Army have won and lost a game each so far and are very much out of the playoffs race.

They next face Delhi Capitals (DC) on Sunday (May 08) at the DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai.

'You made a reunion team' - Former Indian opener defends Ravindra Jadeja amid CSK's IPL 2022 struggles

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have neared elimination in IPL 2022 with their seventh defeat of the season, after losing match 49 to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 13 runs. With another loss, the four-time winners and defending champions are on the verge of an early exit as their disappointing season continues.

While some of their batters haven't been at their best, the bowling has leaked runs on many occasions, the change in captaincy has been one of the main reasons for their failures. Prior to IPL 15's start, the franchise had announced that MS Dhoni would be stepping down as the skipper, with Ravindra Jadeja succeeding him. Jadeja led in eight games, winning only two encounters, before handing back the captaincy duties to 'Thala' Dhoni.

With the constant change in leadership and Jadeja's inability to respond to the additional responsibilities, the CSK franchise are now starring on the brink of an early exit. Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag, thus, commented on Yellow Army's struggles.

"The first mistake they did was at the start of the season when they announced that MS Dhoni won't be captaining and it will be Ravindra Jadeja, it was a wrong decision," Sehwag told Cricbuzz after CSK were beaten by RCB on Wednesday (May 04).

If Dhoni had been the captain from the beginning then it would've been better and maybe CSK wouldn't have lost match so many matches," Sehwag added.

With four games remaining, CSK will aim to win all the matches but their playoffs chances are now not solely dependent on their victories alone. They need a miracle to enter the top-four and their fate seemed to be sealed in IPL 2022, which has been a disappointing affair for Dhoni & Co.

Updated IPL 2022 points table after Chennai Super Kings versus Royal Challengers Bangalore clash

Match 49 of the IPL 2022 edition saw the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) take on their close rivals Faf du Plessis-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the MCA Stadium, Pune on Wednesday evening (May 04). Being in a precarious situation with the playoffs race heating up, both sides were in need of a win before RCB eventually emerged on top by 13 runs.

At the coin toss, CSK won the toss and opted to bowl first. Skipper MS Dhoni unlocked another major milestone in his staggering IPL career to become only the second player to play 200 matches for a single franchise (after Virat Kohli). RCB openers Faf and Kohli started off a bit slowly but stitched an impressive 62-run opening stand within 8 overs before skipper Faf was removed by his former teammate Moeen Ali. Moeen, who replaced Mitchell Santner, also picked up the wicket of Virat Kohli. Kohli never got going throughout his innings as he only managed a 33-ball 30.

From thereon, RCB young guns Mahipal Lomror (42) and Rajat Patidar started the recovery process. The duo added a valuable 44-run stand for the fourth wicket as the big guns Faf, Kohli and Glenn Maxwell had perished soon.

In reply, CSK openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway (56) ensured a good start for the four-time winners and defending champions. Ruturaj, playing once again on his home ground, looked in good touch but Shahbad Ahmed sent him back for a 23-ball 28. Conway continued from his end but lost the support of Ambati Rayudu and Robin Uthappa as RCB spinners Wanindu Hasaranga and Maxwell chipped in with regular breakthroughs. Harshal Patel (3 for 35) and Josh Hazlewood (1 for 19) ended proceedings in RCB's favour by bowling impressively in the death overs.

IPL 2022: CSK skipper MS Dhoni joins Virat Kohli to become second player to enter special 200-club

MS Dhoni has done wonders in world cricket since his debut in late 2004. The veteran cricketer has made a resounding name for himself with his unorthodox yet effective wicketkeeping, finishing skills, power-hitting in limited-overs whereas he also did reasonably well in the purest format of the game.

Apart from his runs and centuries, ending with 17,266 international runs, 16 tons, 108 half-centuries and 829 dismissals behind the stumps, Dhoni has been inspirational as a leader. For Team India, he won all three major ICC titles as captain and also led the national side to the No. 1 spot across formats. Even for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Dhoni has guided the Yellow Army to four IPL trophies and two Champions League titles.

Dhoni is known for his street smartness, proactive and calm and composed nature, ability to effortlessly groom youngsters and change plans as per situations and opposition while leading a side. His tactical acumen has been hailed by many over the years. Prior to IPL 2022, Dhoni gave up CSK captaincy as Ravindra Jadeja succeeded him. However, he was reappointed CSK skipper for the remainder of the season after eight games. Talking about his leadership abilities, former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja reserved high praise for the keeper-batter and lauded him.

“When Dhoni comes to the fore, it’s always a positive for the Chennai Super Kings. Earlier, it was the same case for India as well. He makes a difference. I am not saying that his captaincy won CSK the last game," Jadeja told Cricbuzz.

"It is not like Chennai have not lost matches under Dhoni. Players and captains come and go but a leader like Dhoni comes once in a lifetime. When he is in charge, he is something special. He has been doing this since 2007. If people haven’t understood in 15 years, what Dhoni the captain brings in, there is no point explaining anything to them,” Jadeja added.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will be looking to continue their winning run against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Tuesday. With MS Dhoni returning as captain after Ravindra Jadeja's decision to step down from his post, CSK bounced back to winning ways as they beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 13 runs in their last outing.

CSK will be looking to make it two wins in a row against RCB when they meet Faf du Plessis' men at the MCA Stadium in Pune on Wednesday. CSK had defeated RCB in the first meeting between the two teams earlier this season, which was also CSK's first win in the tournament after four consecutive defeats in their first four games.

The four-time champions will be hoping to carry the momentum from their win against SRH under Dhoni's captaincy. The captain himself will be aiming to achieve a few milestones when he takes the field against RCB. Dhoni is on the cusp of receiving twin milestones in the game on Wednesday.

Here is a look at the milestones MS Dhoni can achieve against RCB:

1) MS Dhoni has so far played 199 matches for CSK in the IPL and is all set to become the first player to complete the milestone of 200 matches for the defending champions. Dhoni has been leading CSK since the inception of IPL in 2008. He turned up for now-defunct Rising Pune Super Giants in 2016 and 2017 when CSK were banned from the IPL for two seasons.

2) MS Dhoni is just six runs away from completing 6,000 runs as captain in T20 cricket. RCB star Virat Kohli is currently the only batter in the world to have scored over 6,000 runs as a captain in the shortest format of the game, Dhoni will become only the second batter after him to achieve the feat.

MS Dhoni on cusp of twin milestones as CSK gear up to face Faf du Plessis-led RCB in IPL 2022

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will be looking to continue their winning run under MS Dhoni when they lock horns with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 at the MCA Stadium in Pune on Wednesday. CSK defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 13 runs in their last game to bag a much-needed win as Dhoni took over the captaincy from Ravindra Jadeja.

Dhoni had stepped down as CSK's skipper ahead of the start of the season to hand over the baton to Jadeja. However, the star all-rounder decided to hand back the reins to the legendary wicket-keeper batter once again after CSK's disastrous start to the season with six defeats and only two wins in their first eight matches.

The biggest positive for CSK in their win against SRH was opener Ruturaj Gaikwad bouncing back to form with a brilliant 99 off 57 balls while his opening partner Devon Conway also slammed an unbeaten 85 off 55 balls to grow in confidence after his initial snub from the playing XI.

While their batters are finding the momentum, CSK's bowling woes are still intact. Dhoni's biggest challenge will be to get the best out of his struggling bowling attack as he aims to keep CSK alive in the race for the playoffs. On the other hand, Royal Challengers Bangalore have so far managed five wins and five losses in ten games this season. They had started off well but have struggled in their last few matches. RCB are currently on a losing streak of three matches and will be hopeful of bringing an end to it against CSK on Wednesday.

Virat Kohli roared back to form for RCB with a gritty half-century against GT in their last game after a string of low-key scores. However, there remain concerns in their batting line-up as they have failed to deliver as a unit so far. Their bowling attack too has been under pressure in the death overs and will have to step up against CSK.

IPL 2022 today match prediction: Who will win Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Chennai Super Kings clash?

MS Dhoni returned as captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja decided to step down as the skipper of the side and hand over the reins back to Dhoni. Dhoni led CSK to a much-needed 13 run-win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on his comeback as the skipper to keep the four-time champions alive in the race for the playoffs this season.

Dhoni had himself passed over the baton to Jadeja ahead of the start of the season keeping the future in mind. However, Jadeja decided to quit captaincy as CSK endured a horrible start to the season with just two wins and six defeats in their first eight matches. The pressure of captaincy had also started affecting Jadeja's game adversely.

Reacting to the captaincy saga at CSK this season, former CSK star Faf du Plessis, who is leading the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCb) this season, said Dhoni should be the captain at CSK as long as he is in the team. Du Plessis said he was surprised when the change in captaincy happened mid-season but insisted the move was in the making.

"I'm surprised that the captaincy change happened midseason, but I was also surprised at the way it happened the way before the season. So, it is like two surprises cancelling each other out. Obviously, there's no secret that when MS is there and he is the captain, he does get the best out of the players, and that has been a big part of CSK's success," Du Plessis said in a video shared by RCB ahead of their clash against Dhoni's CSK in IPL 2022 on Wednesday (April 04).

CSK will be looking to continue their winning run when they take on RCB at the same venue on Wednesday. While CSK are currently placed ninth on the points table with six points from nine games, RCB are at the sixth spot with ten points from as many matches.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer Mukesh Choudhary has been a success story for his side in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The left-arm pacer had a sluggish start in the league but has grown into confidence with each passing game. He has been a regular feature in CSK's playing XI this season and has stepped up in the absence of Deepak Chahar.

With Chahar out of the season due to an injury, Choudhary has been used extensively by CSK in the Powerplay. He bowled a brilliant spell against Mumbai Indians picking up a three-wicket haul while conceding only 19 runs before scalping a four-wicket haul against Sunrisers Hyderabad in CSK's last outing.

CSK pacer Mukesh Choudhary reveals how MS Dhoni's iconic 2011 WC final's six inspired him to take up cricket

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bounced back to winning ways as MS Dhoni made his return as captain of the side against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Sunday. Dhoni took over captaincy once again after Ravindra Jadeja decided to step down from his post following CSK's disastrous run in the tournament.

CSK rode on brilliant knocks from Ruturaj Gaikwad (99) and Devon Conway (85*) to post a strong total of 202 runs on the board and went on to defend the total successfully to bag their third win of the season. It was CSK's first win under Dhoni after his return as captain of the side this season.

The atmosphere was electric at the MCA Stadium in Pune as CSK fans thronged the stadium in huge numbers to see Dhoni return as skipper of the four-time champions. Dhoni had received a huge reception from the fans when he walked out to bat at number three after the dismissal of Gaikwad during CSK's innings.

The cheers didn't die down even when CSK were out on the field defending the 203-run target during SRH's run chase. SRH superstar Nicholas Pooran was left in awe of the unreal love that Dhoni gets from his fans across India. The West Indies batter said it was one of the moments he would never forget in his career.

Talking about defending champions CSK's run in IPL 2022, the Yellow Army haven't lived upto expectations. One of the most successful and consistent franchises, CSK are languishing at the penultimate position in the points table with only three wins from nine encounters. They, however, returned to winning ways in their previous clash, beating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 13 runs to keep themselves alive in the playoffs race.

Once again being led by Dhoni, CSK will aim to win all their remaining games and hope for few other results to go their way to make an entry into the top four. For now, their chances are very slim. They next face Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Pune on May 04.

It has been a musical chair when it comes to captaincy in the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) camp in IPL 2022 edition. Just two days prior to IPL 15's commencement, MS Dhoni resigned as captain and Ravindra Jadeja was named his successor. After eight games, with CSK losing six of them and languishing at the penultimate position in the points table, Jadeja gave up captaincy and requested Dhoni to take over once again.

With Dhoni back at the helm, CSK returned to winning ways and claimed their third game of the season with a 13-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in match 46 of IPL 2022, at the MCA Stadium, Pune on Sunday evening (May 01). Being asked to bat first, CSK rode on Ruturaj Gaikwad's 99 and Devon Conway's 85 not out to post 202/2 on a batting surface.

In reply, SRH posted 189-6 with a blistering 33-ball 64 and skipper Kane Williamson's 47 but lost the plot in the middle overs with the ball turning and gripping a bit. One stand-out thing was that Jadeja played and bowled with a free mind, returning with 3-0-15-0, whereas Dhoni also looked at his usual best by guiding his bowlers and remaining proactive behind the stumps as captain.

When asked about the change of captaincy in the CSK camp, Dhoni explained the entire scenario and shared how the added responsibility took a toll on Jadeja. At the post-match presentation, he said, "Between me and Jadeja, he knew last season itself that he will be given a chance to captain this year. He knew and got enough time to prepare, what is important is you want him to lead the side and I wanted that transition to happen. In the first 2 games, there was information going in towards 'Jaddu' and after that I left it to him to decide which angle to bowl and all that," Dhoni opined.

"At the end of the season, you don't want him to feel as the captaincy was done by someone else and I'm just going for toss. So it was a gradual transition. Spoon-feeding doesn't really help captain, on the field you have to take those crucial decisions and you have to take responsibility for those decisions," added MSD.

CSK still remain alive -- by the barest of margins -- in the playoffs race with three wins from nine games. They, however, remain at the ninth spot with a negative NRR and, hence, have lots to do in order to progress into the top four.

He knew and got enough time to prepare, what is important is you want him to lead the side and I wanted that transition to happen. In the first 2 games, there was information going in towards 'Jaddu' and after that I left it to him to decide which angle to bowl and all that," Dhoni opined. ALSO READ | IPL 2022: MS Dhoni breaks Rahul Dravid's impressive record on return as Chennai Super Kings skipper "At the end of the season, you don't want him to feel as the captaincy was done by someone else and I'm just going for toss.

'You don't want him to feel that captaincy was...': MS Dhoni on Ravindra Jadeja quitting as CSK skipper

From Umran Malik to Ayush Badoni: Young Indian stars who have taken IPL 2022 by storm

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) returned to winning ways in match 46 of IPL 2022, beating the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 13 runs at the MCA Stadium, Pune on Sunday evening (May 01). Being asked to bat first, MS Dhoni-led CSK rode on Ruturaj Gaikwad's 99 and Devon Conway's 85 not out to post 202-2 and restricted SRH to 189-6, claiming two vital points to stay alive in the competition.

Playing on his home ground, Ruturaj returned to scoring runs after just one fifty from eight games in IPL 15. The right-hander looked in sublime form as he slammed a swashbuckling 57-ball 99, laced with six fours and as many maximums. He struck at a whopping 173.68 and even took on pacer Umran Malik, who has been in sensational form in the middle overs for SRH.

Despite missing out on his second IPL ton, Ruturaj remains happy to have contributed to the team's win at his home ground. "It’s always special to score big at your home-ground, but more importantly, I’m happy because I contributed towards the team’s win,” Gaikwad said after the match in an interview with fast bowler Mukesh Choudhary.

“There was no pressure of performing in front of family and friends, but I wanted to make them proud. Doing well in front of them is a big achievement. I was waiting for the moment and, thankfully, I did well. I enjoyed batting with Devon. I am delighted for him as it was only his second match and he scored his maiden IPL fifty. We haven’t played together much, but we spend a lot of time in my room. Hence, we got to know about each other’s game, how we communicate and how we react to certain situations on the field,” the opener further opined.

“We already had off-field conversations and, thankfully, we shared a decent partnership. Getting out on 99 made me a little sad, but I was happy that I was able to gain momentum and take the pressure off Devon. Whether it’s 99 or 100, winning the game is important,” Gaikwad added.

Dhoni-led CSK remain alive in the playoffs race with a win over SRH. They, however, have plenty to do with only three wins from nine encounters and a negative NRR. CSK vs SRH: 'Whether it’s 99 or 100' - Ruturaj Gaikwad reacts after being deprived of an IPL ton

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) kept their playoffs hopes alive -- by the barest of margins -- in IPL 2022 with a 13-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in match 46 on Sunday evening (May 01). It was a special win especially after a lot has been said and written about the captaincy situation in the Yellow Army's camp.

After Ravindra Jadeja was made Chennai's captain just two days prior to the 15th season's commencement, he gave the job back to his predecessor MS Dhoni, who will now lead CSK till the end of the IPL 2022 edition. Under Dhoni, Ruturaj Gaikwad (99), Devon Conway (85 not out) and Mukesh Choudhary (4 for 46) stood tall as CSK posted 202-2, after being asked to bat first at the MCA Stadium, Pune, before restricting SRH to 189-6.

Despite a few dropped catches and conceding some boundaries in the end overs, CSK had a good game and now have three wins from nine games to continue to be at the penultimate position in the points table, with playoff hopes still alive. Following the CSK-SRH clash, former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha revealed what is it to play under Dhoni's leadership.

Ojha told in Cricbuzz Live, "MS Dhoni's team meetings are quite short. He does most of the work on the ground. He does not tell beforehand what to do to the players. He just tells the coaching staff to ensure that the players are ready. He keeps a tab on everything that is going on in the team."

He does most of the work on the ground: Former India spinner dwells on MS Dhoni's captaincy approach

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opener Ruturaj Gaikwad was in brilliant form in his side's clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Sunday (May 01). Gaikwad slammed a brilliant knock of 99 runs and combined with his opening partner Devon Conway to post a record 182-run stand for the first wicket at the MCA Stadium in Pune.

The stylish right-hander, who had been struggling for consistency this season, looked in dazzling form right from the start of his innings and took the SRH bowlers to the cleaners. Gaikwad scored 99 off just 57 deliveries laced with six sixes and six fours. He missed out on a well-deserved hundred by just 1 run but ended up etching his name in history along with Conway.

The 182-run stand between Conway and Gaikwad for the first wicket against SRH is the biggest partnership for the franchise in the history of IPL. The duo broke the record of former CSK openers Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson, who had posted a 181-run stand in IPL 2020.

While Gaikwad scored 99, Conway slammed an unbeaten 85 off 55 balls to help CSK post a massive total of 202 runs on the board and win the game by 13 runs after restricting SRH on 189/6 in 20 overs. Post his side's win Gaikwad took a cheeky dig at Du Plessis stating that the South African batter might be jealous that he and Conway broke his record for CSK.

"I think Faf would be jealous a little bit. But it's okay. It feels really nice to have the record," Ruturaj told CSK TV after the MS Dhoni-led side defeated Kane Williamson & Co. to bag their third win of the season. Du Plessis is currently leading RCB in IPL 2022 after being released by CSK.

IPL 2022: Updated points table after Chennai Super Kings beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 13 runs

Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway's effortless six-hitting exhibition was well complemented by a four-wicket haul from Mukesh Choudhary as Chennai Super Kings notched up a 13-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in an IPL match here on Sunday.

Gaikwad (99 off 57 balls) and Conway (85 not out off 55) put SRH's attack to the sword, notching up a scintillating 182-run partnership, the highest opening stand of the season, as CSK posted an imposing 202 for two after being invited to bat.

In reply, SRH fell short, reaching 189 for 6 in 20 overs despite late heroics from Nicholas Pooran (64 not out) and a 47-run innings by skipper Kane Williamson at the top.
Choudhary emerged with the best figures for CSK, scalping four for 46, while Mitchell Santner (1/36) and

Dwaine Pretorius (1/40) took one wicket each.

The win, which coincided with MS Dhoni's return to captaincy, kept CSK afloat for an improbable play-off berth as they now have six points with five matches remaining, while SRH remained in the fourth position with 10 points in the overall standing.

Abhishek Sharma (39) and Williamson gave SRH a flying start to their chase but Choudhary struck twice in two balls to reduce the Hyderabad outfit to 58 for 2 in six overs.

While Sharma was caught by Dwaine Pretorius at long-on, Rahul Tripathi was out for a duck after giving catching practice at short third man.

Aiden Markram hit two sixes before falling prey to Mitchell Santner.

Pooran hit Ravindra Jadeja for a six before unleashing a monstrous reverse sweep for another maximum, while Williamson too notched up a one-handed six to keep the scoreboard ticking.

The SRH skipper, however, was trapped in front by Pretorius as it became 126 for 4 in 15th over.
Pooran then kept fighting in vain while scoreboard pressure took a toll on the other batters.

Earlier, Gaikwad, who has been blowing hot and cold this season, was at his destructive best as he smashed six sixes and as many fours before tragically falling short of a ton by just one run.

The 25-year-old was in his zone as he stood on his backfoot, and played some exceptional shots to dominate the formidable SRH bowling unit.

Anything short was pulled with immaculate ease, while pitched up deliveries were treated with equal disdain as Gaikwad didn't miss a trick to send SRH on a leather hunt during his classy innings.

Conway too showed great temperament as he was the perfect foil for Gaikwad. He bide his time initially before going for the big shots in the slog overs.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar (0/22) was the best bowler on display for SRH, while pace sensation Umran Malik had a really bad day in office, having conceded 48 in his four overs. T Natarajan (2/42) picked up two wickets but also went for runs.

With Washington Sundar suffering an injury while fielding, SRH was forced to use Markram and Shashank Singh as the fifth bowler, who conceded 46 from their combined four overs.

After a watchful start, Gaikwad broke free as he pulled Marco Jansen for two maximums, while Natarajan was sent across the mid-wicket boundary as CSK reached 40 for 0 after the powerplay.

Gaikwad was particular harsh on Malik, smashing him over cover first before lifting him over long-on for another maximum in his first over.

Malik cranked up the pace, bowling the fastest delivery of the tournament, clocking 154kmph in the 10th over, but ended up conceding two more boundaries off Gaikwad's blade as the opener completed his half-century off 33 balls.

Markram too faced the fury of the duo with Conway sending him across the fine leg before going down the wicket for a flat six.

Gaikwad too clobbered him for successive sixes as the 100 was up in the 11th over.

Malik was again in the line of fire as Gaikwad slogged him over long-on for a boundary before lifting him over long-off for another maximum.

A top-edge six off Marco Jansen, meanwhile, helped Conway bring up his fifty in 39 balls and he ended the 15th over with another four and a six.

Natarajan was brought back but he too conceded 13 runs with Gaikwad producing another pull. Conway too sent one over the bowler's head in the 18th over.

Gaikwad, however, missed out of a deserving hundred when he gave an easy catch at point.
Back at the helm of affairs, M S Dhoni promoted himself but couldn't make an impact as he was holed out by Malik off Natarajan.

IPL 2022: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway guide Chennai Super Kings to important victory

It was the return for MS Dhoni as the Chennai Super Kings skipper as they faced Sunrisers Hyderabad and the veteran wicket-keeper batsman added a major accolade to his name on Sunday.

Dhoni became the oldest Indian cricketer to captain a side in T20 cricket as he led the CSK team at the age of 40 years 298 days. The feat previously belonged to Rahul Dravid who captained Rajasthan Royals at 40 years and 268 days. Sunil Joshi, Anil Kumble and Sourav Ganguly are also part of the list.

Dhoni took over the CSK captaincy once again after Ravindra Jadeja stepped down from the position after the previous match. Jadeja became the skipper ahead of the 2022 season but a disappointing run in the tournament and a dip in personal form resulted in Dhoni taking charge once again.

IPL 2022: MS Dhoni breaks Rahul Dravid's impressive record on return as Chennai Super Kings skipper

Ruturaj Gaikwad created history by becoming the joint fastest Indian batsman to score 1000 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as he reached the massive milestone during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday. The opener equalled the record set by legend Sachin Tendulkar.

Gaikwad, who fell just one run short of a well-deserved century, was able to reach the milestone in just 31 matches – the same number of matches taken by Tendulkar.

In the process, he surpassed big names like Suresh Raina (34), Devdutt Pallikal (35) and Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant (35).

Gaikwad looked in brilliant form as he slammed 99 off just 57 balls with the help of six fours and six maximums. He fell agonisingly short of his second IPL century and as a result, he became the fifth batsman to be dismissed on 99 in IPL.

The other batsmen who missed out on their centuries by just one run are Virat Kohli, Prithvi Shaw, Ishan Kishan and West Indies international Chris Gayle.

The youngster stitched together an impressive 182-run partnership for the opening wicket on Sunday as Conway also scored 85 off just 55 balls. This was the best partnership for CSK in IPL history as they went past the 181-stand between Shane Watson and Faf Du Plessis against Punjab Kings.

Ruturaj Gaikwad completes 1000 runs in IPL for Chennai Super Kings, equals Sachin Tendulkar in elite list

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have not had much going their way in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. With six losses in their first eight matches this season, CSK stand on the brink of facing early elimination as they desperately aim to spark a turnaround. The defending champions were expected to be a force to reckon with after a memorable title triumph last season but they have failed to replicate their success this year.

CSK are no stranger to slower starts to their campaign but this season was different as they slumped to four straight defeats in their first four games before breaking the deadlock against Royal Challengers Bangalore to get their first points on the table. CSK were expected to get some winning momentum behind their back after their win over RCB but they lost two in their next three matches as the slump continued.

CSK were in for a stern test at the start of the season after stalwart MS Dhoni's decision to hand over the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja. While many thought the decision could prove to be the right one considering Dhoni is past his best as a batter and Jadeja can learn from him while he is still around, the move didn't quite work in CSK's favour.

The defending champions went on to endure one of the worst possible starts to the season as Jadeja looked overwhelmingly burdened on the field with the captaincy responsibility. His personal performances with both the bat and the ball also weren't up to the mark nor were some of his decisions under pressure.

However, Jadeja's dodgy form has not been the only reason behind CSK's struggles this season as the four-time champions have lacked good starts at the top of the order and have also backed cutting edge in their pace department. The lack of a power-hitter in the middle-order has also seen them fail to get over the line in close run-chases.

Decoding CSK's struggles in IPL 2022:

1) Misfiring openers

Chennai Super Kings' buggest concern this season has been the woeful form of opening batter Ruturaj Gaikwad. Gaikwad, who was the leading run-getter in IPL 2021 last year, played an instrumental role in helping CSK win their fourth title along with his opening partner Faf du Plessis, who was the second-highest run-getter of the season.

While Du Plessis is no more a part of the CSK squad, Gaikwad has not been able to hit the ground running in IPL 2022. With just one fifty in eight matches so far, the young right-hander has struggled immensely with the willow. To add to CSK's woes, his opening partner Robin Uthappa has also struggled to provide good starts at the top consistently while Devon Conway was dropped after just one failure.

2) Deepak Chahar's absence

Chennai Super Kings have also missed the presence of their premier pacer Deepak Chahar, who was ruled out due to an injury ahead of the start of the season. Chahar has been one of the most prolific wicket-takers for CSK over the last few years and has been exceptional in Powerplay. His absence has been a huge blow for the four-time champions, who have failed to find an ideal replacement for the 29-year-old.

Chahar was expected to return to the squad midway through the season but was ruled out from IPL 2022 completely after his injury worsened. In his absence, CSK have no prominent Indian pacer in their squad and have had to pay the price for an inexperienced bowling attack.

3) Injury woes

Besides Deepak Chahar, CSK have also had to deal with injuries to several key players. New Zealand pacer Adam Milne, who was epected to play a big role for the franchise with his brutal pace, has been ruled out of the season. All-rounder Moeen Ali has also suffered an anke injury and has already missed three matches for the team.

4) Change in captaincy

Not man had expected CSK to struggle as much as they did after MS Dhoni stepped aside to hand over the baton to Ravindra Jadeja as captain of the side. However, the change in captaincy didn't work in CSK's favour. Despite having significant experience behind his back, Jadeja was not as sharp on the field with his decision making.

The pressure of captaincy also saw Jadeja lose his sheen as the all-rounder he has been for CSK over the las couple of seasons. While he was struggling to get going with the bat, the left-hander also has not been among the wickets for the Men in Yellow. CSK also clearly missed Dhoni's tactical genius and his exceptional decision-making abilities on the field in crucial situations.

Can MS Dhoni pull off another miraculous comeback for CSK?

On Saturday, CSK announced Dhoni was returning as captain for the team after Jadeja had decided to hand over the reins back to the legendary wicket-keeper batter. While the expectations have sky-rocketed once again, he will have his task cut out for the remainder of the season.

With six defeats in eight matches, CSK are already on the brink of facing early elimination from the tournament and need to win their remaining six matches on the trot to stand a chance of making it to the playoffs. While Dhoni remains one of the greatest captains of all time in IPL history and has bailed his team out of trouble on several occasions, it will be a mountainous task to get CSK's derailed campaign back on track.

The Dhoni era will reignite for CSK with their clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MCA Stadium in Pune on Sunday (May 01) which will be a must-win encounter for the four-time champions as they look to spark a turnaround and bring a change in the fortunes this season.

'You will definitely see me in yellow jersey': MS Dhoni opens up on CSK future after return as captain

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will be looking to spark a turnaround in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as MS Dhoni returns as captain for the defending champions. Dhoni, who had passed over the captaincy baton to star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja ahead of the start of IPL 2022, has taken over once again after Jadeja's decision to step down from the post.

CSK endured a disappointing run in IPL 2022 under new captain Jadeja as they managed only two wins in their first eight matches to stand on the brink of an early exit from the tournament. With Dhoni back leading the side once again, CSK will have to win their remaining six matches on the trot to stand a chance of making it to the playoffs.

Dhoni has his task cut out as he returns as captain and will be under pressure right from his first game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday (May 01). Despite Dhoni is one of the most successful captains of all time in IPL history, it will be a huge task for him to take CSK to the playoffs this season.

However, former India cricketer Virender Sehwag believes Dhoni can pull off the impossible with CSK this year and help them finish in the top four despite the odds against them. Sehwag, who played under Dhoni's captaincy for a number of years in Team India, said he saw Indian cricket change under the legendary wicket-keeper batter while backing him to do the unthinkable.

Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Chennai Super Kings, IPL 2022: Head-to-head, stats, trivia and predicted XIs

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will have MS Dhoni back leading the side once again after the legendary wicket-keeper batter was reappointed as the captain of the side less than 48 hours before the team's must-win clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2022. Ravindra Jadeja stepped down from his post to hand over CSK captaincy back to Dhoni on Saturday (April 30).

Dhoni had passed on the baton to Jadeja ahead of the start of IPL 2022 earlier this year. However, the decision backfired as CSK endured a disappointing start to the season. The defending champions lost six out of their first eight matches to stand on the brink of an early exit from the tournament.

Dhoni has now returned at the helm but has his task cut out as CSK need to win their remaining six matches on the trot to stand a chance at making it to the playoffs. His first big test will be against SRH, who have been one of the in-form teams this season and were on a five-match winning streak which came to an end in their last outing against Gujarat Titans.

Both teams are heading into the clash on the back of defeats in their respective last matches. While CSK went down against Punjab Kings in their last game, SRH lost to table-toppers Gujarat Titans. Both teams will be hoping to return to winning ways when they come up against each other at the MCA Stadium in Pune on Sunday.

SRH will hope for a better show from their bowlers after their pace attack barring Umran Malik was taken to the cleaners by GT batters Rashid Khan and Rahul Tewatia in their last game. CSK have far more concerns in their line-up compared to SRH as their openers have struggled this season and the bowling attack has lacked an edge in the absence of Deepak Chahar.

However, with Dhoni back leading the team, CSK will be eager to defy the odds and spark a turnaround in the remainder of the season. They still have six games in hands and will be hoping to ensure they can somehow make it to the playoffs.

SRH vs CSK, IPL 2022 prediction:

MS Dhoni is back as captain for Chennai Super Kings but the legend will be under pressure right from his first game as the leader of the team. Nonetheless, CSK have enough experience and firepower in their line up to come out on top against SRH and start what could be an epic turnaround for them this season.
