Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Saturday (April 30) confirmed Ravindra Jadeja had decided to step down as the captain of the team to hand over the reins back to MS Dhoni. With six losses and just two wins in their first eight matches this season, CSK had a terrible start to their campaign under new captain Jadeja as they struggled to get over the line in pressure situations.

Dhoni had handed over the captaincy to Jadeja ahead of the start of IPL 2022 but the move didn't work in the favour of the four-time champions, who struggled massively under the star all-rounder. On Saturday, CSK announced that Dhoni has been reappointed as the captain of the team in the larger interest of the franchise and will lead the team for the remainder of the season.

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan revealed it was the team management's decision to hand over captaincy back to Dhoni. The CSK CEO said they have never interfered in such decisions and that the backroom staff headed by head coach Stephen Fleming would have taken the decision after talking amongst each other.

"It will always be a smooth process. After all, the decision has been taken by the team management. We do not interfere in that. This is a decision they would have taken themselves. They would have talked and taken the decision," the CSK CEO told NDTV.

The pressure of captaincy had also affected Jadeja's performances adversely as the all-rounder found it difficult to get going with both the bat and the ball. Known for his terrific striking ability in the death overs, Jadeja failed to play impactful knocks for CSK at crucial junctures.

He would be looking to get back on top of his game with Dhoni taking over the captaincy mantle once again. Under Jadeja, CSK have managed oy two wins in eight matches so far this season and are on the brink of facing early elimination from the tournament.

IPL 2022: Ravindra Jadeja steps down as Chennai Super Kings captain, MS Dhoni to take over

From MS Dhoni to Parthiv Patel: Wicketkeepers with most dismissals in IPL

MS Dhoni is one of the best finishers in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The veteran wicket-keeper batter has bailed his team Chennai Super Kings (CKS) out of trouble on several occasions in the past and continues to do that even in the ongoing season despite being 40.

Dhoni is no more the flamboyant hitter of the ball that he once was but backs his ability to finish games on his own. He recently helped CSK chase down 16 off the last four balls against Mumbai Indians to bag a thrilling three-wicket win. Dhoni might not be on top of his game but he has been one of CSK's better batters this season.

After yet another finishing masterclass from the former CSK captain in the IPL, former Australia spinner Brad Hogg recently explained why Dhoni is the greatest finisher IPL has ever seen. In a video on his YouTube channel, Hogg explained how no target is too big for Dhoni in the final over and that his reputation also helps him dominate against bowlers.

"MS Dhoni wants that particular moment. He wants it because he believes in himself. No target is too big. Whether it's 15 runs an over or 30 runs an over, he still believes that he can get his team over the line. Also the reputation, he already knows that the bowler is thinking that he is good at this role at the back end and he can win from any situation," Hogg said.

"His scoring rate is not that high in the 18th and the 19th over. He is just working the ball around, making sure that he's got control of the run rate. It's between him and the bowler in the final over and he tries to attack the bowler in the first couple of balls. Once he does that, his reputation overrides the bowler's mind," he added.

CSK had their hopes pinned on Dhoni once again in their last game against Punjab Kings. With 27 needed off the last six balls, Dhoni started with a six against Rishi Dhawan before he bowled a wide. It seemed the stage was set once again for a Dhoni masterclass but Dhawan managed to outfox the CSK veteran and earned his team an 11-run win.

Dhoni was dismissed on 12 off 8 balls as CSK suffered their sixth defeat of the season. The Ravindra Jadeja-led side has so far managed only two wins this season.

'No target is too big': Ex-Australian cricketer explains why MS Dhoni is the greatest finisher in IPL history

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming recently opened up on the lack of chances for young all-rounder Rajvardhan Hangargekar in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. CSK had roped in the India U-19 star at the IPL 2022 mega auction earlier this year for a sum of Rs 1.5 crore (INR 15 million).

While he was expected to feature regularly for the franchise in the absence of premier pacer Deepak Chahar, who has already been ruled out of the season due to an injury, Hangargekar is yet to make his debut for CSK. The young all-rounder is known for his pace with the new ball and can also bat down the order.

Many have been left surprised over the non-inclusion of Hangargekar in CSK's playing XI in their first eight games this season. The youngster has been left to warm the bench despite CSK's poor run so far this season as the Ravindra Jadeja-led side has managed only two wins in eight games.

CSK head coach Fleming explained why Hangargekar is yet to feature for CSK this season and revealed they don't want to rush the talented youngster as it can damage his confidence. Fleming stressed the franchise wants to be very careful in nurturing Hangargekar.

"You have to be very careful. I know he’s (Rajvardhan) performed at the Under-19 level but this is a step up. We’re very conscious of the skills that he needs to perform. We don’t wanna just throw him in and damage him. We want to make sure we realise the potential that he’s got," said Fleming.

Shivam Dube is currently ahead of Hangarekar in the pecking order considering his experience and his hard-hitting abilities. Dube has been a regular in the CSK playing XI and has played a couple of brilliant knocks for the team but has been far from consistent.

In the absence of Chahar, CSK's bowling attack has struggled immensely while their batters too have failed to make an impact so far this season. The likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, skipper Jadeja and opener Robin Uthappa have all shone in patches and have been inconsistent otherwise.

CSK head coach Stephen Fleming explains why Rajvardhan Hangargekar is yet to feature in IPL 2022

A superb, fighting half-century by seasoned Ambati Rayudu went in vain as a clinical bowling performance saw Punjab Kings beat Chennai Super Kings by 11 runs in Match 38 of IPL 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium here on Monday.

Chasing a target of 188 set by Punjab Kings largely boosted by a brilliant 88 not out by Shikhar Dhawan, Chennai were in trouble soon.

Rayudu came in to bat with Chennai struggling at 40/3 and took them to safety with a blazing 78 off 39 balls, hitting seven fours and 6 sixes to raise hopes for a CSK victory. He raised 64 runs off 32 deliveries for the fifth wicket partnership.

But in the end, Jadeja (21 off 16 balls) could not guide his team to victory as from needing 47 off 24 balls, they reached a stage where they needed 27 off the last six deliveries with Jadeja and M.S Dhoni at the crease.

Dhoni struck Rishi Dhawan for a six off the first ball but was out off the third legal delivery and Jadeja could manage only a six and a single off the final two deliveries as CSK slumped to their sixth defeat in eight matches -- ending with 176/6 in 20 overs.

Chennai got off to a poor start and lost opener Robin Uthappa with 10 runs on the board, top-edging a length ball by Sandeep Sharma to Shikhar Dhawan. It soon became 40/3 as Mitchell Santner (9) and Shivam Dube (8) got out cheaply.

But just when it looked like they will suffer a collapse, Rayudu got together with the other opener, Ruturaj Gaikwad to pull them out of the woods. Both Rayudu and Gaikwad started cautiously but struck some fine boundaries on the right occasions to keep Chennai`s hope alive.

They added 49 runs for the fourth wicket and just when it was looking like they will raise the tempo, Gaikwad, who despatched Rabada to the boundaries off successive deliveries in the first over, was out, caught by Mayank Agarwal while trying to hit Rabada for a second successive four in the 13th over.

Rayudu however, kept up the good work. He struck Sandeep Sharma for fours off successive deliveries as the bowler strayed on legs and blasted Rahul Charar for a four and a six in the 15th over before hammering Sandeep Sharma for 23 runs in the 16th over, blasting three sixes and a four.

He and skipper Ravindra Jadeja raised 64 runs for the fifth wicket in 32 balls, Rayudu doing the bulk of the scoring. He got out just when it looked he was good for a century, cleaned up by Rabada with a superb yorker backing away from the leg side but missing the ball completely to see his leg stump re-arranged. Rayudu`s brilliant 78 off 39 balls left CSK needing 47 off 24 balls.

With Arshdeep Singh and Rabada bowling two good overs, the equation came down to 27 off the last 6 deliveries and eventually to 19 off two balls and though Jadeja struck Rishi Dhawan for a six, CSK eventually fell short by 11 runs.

Shikhar Dhawan carried his bat through as he scored an unbeaten 88 off 59 deliveries, hitting 9 fours and 2 sixes as he helped Punjab Kings to 187/4 after they were asked to bat first by Chennai Super Kings skipper Ravindra Jadeja.

Brief scores: Punjab Kings 187/4 in 20 overs (Shikhar Dhawan 88 not out, Bhanuka Rajapaksa 42, Liam Livingstone 19; Dwayne Bravo 2/42) beat Chennai Super Kings 176/6 in 20 overs (Ruturaj Gaikwad 30, Ambati Rayudu 78, Ravindra Jadeja 21 not out; Kagiso Rabada 2/23, Rishi Dhawan 2/39) by 11 runs.

Former England captain-turned-commentator Kevin Pietersen is in awe of the Wankhede crowd's reaction when MS Dhoni came out to bat in Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) tough 188-run chase versus Punjab Kings (PBKS) in match 38 of IPL 2022 edition, held on Monday evening (April 25).

After the fall of Ambati Rayudu, who played a stupendous 39-ball 78, the Wankhede crowd gave him a resounding cheer before shifting focus on Dhoni, the former CSK skipper. Dhoni came out in the middle on the back of a match-winning 13-ball 28 not out in Chennai's win over Mumbai in their last encounter. With the equation reading 35 off 13 balls, the CSK loyalists -- who were in majority at the Wankhede -- still pinned their hopes on the 40-year-old.

Dhoni started the final over, with CSK in need of an improbable 27, with a huge six to light up the atmosphere. However, he fell on the third delivery for an 8-ball 12. Despite his dismissal and CSK's defeat, the crowd was still buzzing, which left Pietersen stunned. The former cricketer feels such a rousing crowd response is one of the reasons why IPL deserves to be held in India. He also opined that it is the reason for the league, CSK, and Dhoni's ever-increasing followers worldwide.

"It was unbelievable. It was incredible. That's exactly why the IPL deserves to be played in the country. The energy and excitement of that man coming to the wicket is none other than like anywhere else," Pietersen told Star Sports.

"It's not a full capacity here as the bottom tier is placarded because of the restrictions. However, that did not matter at all. It was difficult calling the game, it was so noisy inside the commentary box. The support for him, the CSK and the IPL is incredible. It's still noisy. The game's finished, they lost and it's still noisy. Incredible!," opined Pietersen.

Talking about the PBKS-CSK face-off, the Mayank Agarwal-led side completed a double over seventh-ranked Chennai with a hard-fought 11-run win. Being asked to bat first, they rode on Shikhar Dhawan's 88 to post 187-4 before Arshdeep Singh, Kagiso Rabada and Rishi Dhawan starred with the ball to restrict CSK for 176-6.

Being asked to bat first, they rode on Shikhar Dhawan's 88 to post 187-4 before Arshdeep Singh, Kagiso Rabada and Rishi Dhawan starred with the ball to restrict CSK for 176-6.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) failed to chase down the target of 188 runs as they lost against Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 11 runs in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Monday. CSK suffered their sixth defeat of the season as their hopes for qualifying for the playoffs are all but over.

While the defeat further hurt their chances of finishing in the top four, CSK have also suffered yet another injury blow. Star all-rounder Moeen Ali, who has already missed the last two matches for the franchise, is likely to remain out of action for a week due to an ankle injury.

Moeen suffered the injury during a training session ahead of CSK's clash against Mumbai Indians last week. He was left out of the playing XI with Mitchell Santner taking his place. After CSK's defeat against PBKS on Monday, Fleming provided an update on Moeen's potential comeback and said it might take the all-rounder a week to return.

“He rolled his ankle, X-rays revealed there was no fracture but there is always a recovery period of maybe seven days. We are hopeful the recovery will be quick given that there is no fracture,” Fleming said at the post-match press conference on Monday.

CSK have been marred with a number of injuries to key players this season. Their most expensive buy at the IPL 2022 mega auction - Deepak Chahar and New Zealand pacer Adam Milne have already been ruled out of the tournament due to respective injuries.

Star batter Amabtai Rayudu also suffered an injury scare during CSK's clash against PBKS on Monday. Rayudu injured his hand while fielding but later returned to bat and scored a brilliant 78 off just 39 balls to almost take CSK over the line in the 189-run chase. Fleming said the injury can cause some damage considering Rayudu had broken the same hand some time back.

“The first check was around the break and his hand was bruising. It was just a case of icing that and getting that down and I think a little padding around the glove. It was the same hand that was broken sometime back, so it’s still pretty tender and a knock like that can obviously cause some damage," said Fleming.

Match 38 of the IPL 2022 edition saw the second reverse fixture of the season as Punjab Kings (PBKS) faced Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Monday evening (April 25). Opting to bowl first, Ravindra Jadeja & Co. couldn't pick regular wickets and their fielding remained below-par as Shikhar Dhawan's 88 and vital knocks from Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Liam Livingstone propelled Punjab to 187-4.

In reply, CSK were tottering at 40-3 and were behind the required run-rate before Ambati Rayudu's scintillating 39-ball 78 kept the defending champions in the hunt. At one stage, Rayudu's blitz reduced the equation to a gettable 47 off 24 balls before Arshdeep Singh and Kagiso Rabada's brilliant death bowling led to Chennai needing 27 off 6 balls.

With MS Dhoni still in the middle, CSK fans hoped for a miracle. He started with a mammoth six, off Rishi Dhawan, before Punjab eventually beat the Yellow Army by 11 runs. Thus, Kagiso Rabada lauded Rishi for keeping his composure in a tough situation and getting the better of Dhoni (12 off 8 balls).

"Arsh (Arshdeep) has been the best death bowler in this comp; that's what the stats say. He's a youngster coming in, has got a lot of drive, a lot of ambition as well. And he's just a good bloke, so, it's nice to have him around. I always bowl at the death as well, so I know that, but Arsh has been magnificent; he's been leading the way in that discipline," Rabada added.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will be looking to continue their winning run when they lock horns with Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Monday (April 25). CSK defeated Mumbai Indians in a last-ball thriller in their last outing to bag their second win in seven matches so far this season as their playoff hopes hang in balance after a woeful start.

Their death bowling woes have also been left exposed on several occasions already this year with Adam Milne out of the season due to an injury and Chris Jordan dropped due to poor show with the ball.

Punjab Kings had a great start to their campaign with two wins in their first three games before losing the plot. The Mayank Agarwal-led side has since lost three out of their next four matches to be placed 8th on the points table. Barring Liam Livingstone, none of the PBKS batters have been consistent this season and their pace attack has also lacked venom despite Kagiso Rabada's presence.

Punjab Kings vs Chennai Super Kings, IPL 2022: Head-to-head, stats, trivia and predicted playing XIs

Two days prior to the commencement of IPL 2022 edition, MS Dhoni dropped a bomb by announcing his resignation as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain, via the team management. Thus, Ravindra Jadeja was named as Dhoni's successor at the top job and the all-rounder has already led CSK in seven games this season.

While Jadeja hasn't tasted much success as CSK's captain this season, his teammate and Chennai's vital cog in the batting line-up Ambati Rayudu feels the star all-rounder has it in him to succeed as the defending champions' skipper and also lead India one day.

"Filling in MS Dhoni's shoes, it's never going to happen. But Jaddu definitely has it in him and, under the guidance of Mahi bhai, and till the time he's around on the ground with him, it will be very easy for him. Jadeja will become better. He has it in him to not only lead CSK but also India one day," Rayudu said.

Rayudu added that CSK is going through a transition phase, with the captaincy baton passed on from Dhoni to Jadeja, he strongly feels that the Yellow Army will still succeed under the new leader along with a plethora of young talents. "There is a shift and it has to come. A lot of youngsters will continue to feature in CSK as the years go by. Having a young captain like Jadeja, who has done it and seen it all, will be great for them to be under him and have his confidence. They have the backing of the captain, and I think he is going in the right direction, as is the team. CSK will be very, very successful under him," Rayudu further asserted.

CSK have so far won only two games, out of seven, in IPL 2022 edition to be languishing at the penultimate position in the points table. Thus, they need to revamp and find some momentum in the second half of the league stage in order to enter the playoffs. They face Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Monday evening (April 25).

He has it in him to lead India one day: Ambati Rayudu all praise for CSK skipper Ravindra Jadeja

The cricketing action will continue in IPL 2022 edition on Monday evening (April 25). The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will be taking on Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the second reverse fixture of the season, at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

Both sides are in desperate need to find some momentum and consistency as their playoffs hopes are hanging by a thread. Talking about the Punjab franchise, they are slowly getting into a familiar territory -- like in the past few seasons -- of getting into a do-or-die situation. So far, they have only three wins from seven encounters and are languishing at the eighth position, just a spot above Ravindra Jadeja-led CSK.

On the other hand, the defending champions Chennai has picked up some momentum but they still need a log of catching up to do in order to progress to the playoffs. The four-time winners have only two victories from seven games and also need to work on their NRR. While CSK bowlers are now beginning to complement the ever-reliant Dwayne Bravo, they would need a lot more to stop a rampant Punjab batting line-up, who usually go all-out in the powerplay overs (going at over 9 RPO).

Meanwhile, the likes of Jadeja and Ruturaj Gaikwad also need to find some form for Chennai's benefit. From Punjab's perspective, they need a lot more from their opening duo Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan whereas Jonny Bairstow desperately needs to find form or make way for Bhanuka Rajapaksa. Liam Livingstone -- Man-of-the-Match in PBKS' big win over CSK earlier in the season -- will continue to spearhead the middle and lower-order, however, he needs more support from the likes of Shahrukh Khan, Odean Smith, etc. Their bowling has been led by Rahul Chahar and an economical Arshdeep Singh but Kagiso Rabada still hasn't come good.

Match prediction for Chennai vs Punjab: The Wankhede pitches are now back to producing some big scores. However, the dew effect has gone down considerably and, hence, batting first won't be ruled out altogether. The surface used for the Lucknow-Mumbai encounter was a two-paced one. It will be interesting to see if it remains the same for Monday's clash. With Punjab coming into this encounter on the back of a loss, a slightly-improved Chennai should march ahead of an inconsistent PBKS line-up to pick up their third win of the season. CSK also have a better head-to-head record, leading Punjab 15-11.

PBKS vs CSK, IPL 2022 prediction today: Who will win Punjab Kings vs Chennai Super Kings match?

It was a trademark performance from MS Dhoni as he played the role of a finisher to perfection as Chennai Super Kings registered a three-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians on Thursday.

With the defending champions in trouble after losing seven wickets, it was all down to the veteran to guide them to victory and his 13-ball-28 was just what the doctor ordered for CSK.

With 17 runs needed from the final over, MI captain Rohit Sharma handed the ball to Jaydev Unadkat with Dwayne Pretorius on strike along with MS Dhoni. Although it was not a mammoth task, CSK were staring at another defeat with no more specialist batsmen to come after the duo.

The over could not have started worse for CSK as Pretorious was trapped LBW on the very first ball. The umpire thought it was not out but the DRS showed that the ball pitched inside the line of the stumps and was hitting leg stump. On the second ball, new batsman Dwayne Bravo took a single to put Dhoni in strike with 16 runs needed to win from the remaining four deliveries.

The third ball was a cross-seamed delivery in the slot from Unadkat and Dhoni heaved it straight over the bowler’s head for a boundary. The next delivery was a slow bouncer but it once again proved to be perfect for Dhoni as he scooped it over short fine leg for a boundary.

6 runs to win from 2 balls – The stage was perfect for Dhoni and on the fifth delivery, he played the ball with soft hands towards the mid-wicket region and completed two runs to retain strike.

With four runs needed in the final ball, Jaydev Unadkat went for a low full toss but Dhoni was up for the challenge. He shuffled across and played the ball fine past the short fine leg fielder for a four.

It was vintage Dhoni on display once again as CSK registered their second win of the competition but things got worse for MI as they slumped to their seventh successive loss.

IPL 2022: MS Dhoni hits Jaydev Unadkat for 16 runs in last over to guide CSK to victory - WATCH

It was not an enjoyable outing for Mumbai Indians fast bowler Jaydev Unadkat as the left-arm bowler was unable to defend 17 runs in the final over of the match as MS Dhoni slammed him for one six and two boundaries to guide Chennai Super Kings to a thrilling victory on Thursday.

However, during the course of the match, Unadkat became the only Indian left-arm fast bowling to take 200 wickets in T20 cricket. Unadkat achieved the feat by dismissing Robin Uthappa and he surpassed the likes of Irfan Pathan, Ashish Nehra and RP Singh to top the impressive list.

On a more negative note, Unadkat also became the quickest to concede 100 runs against a single batsman in IPL. Dhoni has also enjoyed playing against the left-arm pacer and he was able to score 100 runs off his bowling in just 42 balls.

Previously, this unwanted record belonged to Punjab Kings pacer Sandeep Sharma who conceded 100 runs to both Suresh Raina and AB de Villiers in 47 balls.

IPL 2022: Jaydev Unadkat achieves historic feat and dubious record during MI's loss against CSK

Match 33 of IPL 2022 saw a thrilling clash between defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai on Thursday evening (April 21). Opting to bowl first, Ravindra Jadeja-led CSK restricted MI to 155-7, who rode on Tilak Verma's 55* after early strikes from Mukesh Choudhary.

In reply, CSK were 88 for 3 and remained in the hunt courtesy Robin Uthappa's 25-ball 30 and Ambati Rayudu's stay in the middle (who departed for a 35-ball 40). However, CSK were soon reduced to 106-6, courtesy Daniel Sams' 4 for 30, as the onus fell on Dwaine Pretorius and MS Dhoni in the final overs. The South African played a crucial 14-ball 22 before former Chennai captain Dhoni finished off proceedings with an unbeaten 28 off 13 balls to take CSK home on the final ball of the contest.

After the match, Pretorius explained how Dhoni's presence helped him and revealed the wicketkeeper-batter's advice to him during his handy knock.

"Unbelievable. He's the master at finishing off games and he did it again tonight. I wanted to go for that scoop shot in the first over against (Jasprit) Bumrah (his third), but he (Dhoni) said, 'Wait, wait, wait'. I waited and the next over I said, 'Now I'm going.' And he said to go for it. I went for it. We knew we needed five boundaries, no dots and we could get over the line. I'm working hard and just glad I could contribute to a win to the team today and hopefully we can win a few more," said Pretorius.

Pretorius had played a memorable scoop shot -- in the penultimate over bowled by Bumrah -- during his 14-ball 22 which helped CSK narrow down the equation before Dhoni's late blitz.

IPL 2022: Dwaine Pretorius reveals MS Dhoni's advice during CSK's tense run-chase vs MI

MS Dhoni produced a masterclass finish as the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) beat Mumbai Indians (MI) by three wickets at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai in match 33 of IPL 2022, on Thursday evening (April 21). Opting to bowl first, CSK rode on Mukesh Choudhary's 3 for 19 as they restricted the Rohit Sharma-led MI franchise for 155-7, who relied on Tilak Verma's 55* and cameos from Kieron Pollard-Jaydev Unadkat.

In reply, CSK's run-chase was held by Robin Uthappa (25-ball 30) and Ambati Rayudu's 35-ball 40 before they were reduced from 88/3 to 106-6. The onus was on Dwaine Pretorius (14-ball 22) and Dhoni (an unbeaten 28 off 13 balls) as CSK somehow managed to pull off a heist with a last-ball four to seal the run-chase. While Pretorius took on Jasprit Bumrah, Dhoni got his eye in and rotated strike before going berserk in the final over, off Unadkat.

Following yet another finishing class from Dhoni, India's former pacer RP Singh -- who was Men in Blue's leading wicket-taker in their victorious run in the 2007 T20 World Cup -- has made a special request to 'Thala' Dhoni.

Can we request MS Dhoni to come out of retirement for T20 WC, says ex-India pacer after CSK beat MI

Mumbai Indians (MI) versus Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has been referred to as the El Clasico of IPL since time immemorial. Match 33 of the IPL 2022 edition saw a winless MI take on defending champions and four-time winners CSK, just a position above bottom-ranked Mumbai, in a thrilling encounter before the Yellow Army fought till the very last ball to emerge on top courtesy MS Dhoni's masterclass finish.

Opting to bowl first, Ravindra Jadeja-led CSK had a dream start at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai on Thursday evening (April 21). Mukesh Choudhary's 3 for 19 rocked MI's top-order as they were soon reduced to 23-3 and 47-4 in no time. Rohit achieved an unwanted record with most ducks in IPL after a two-ball dismissal. The likes of Ishan Kishan, and Dewald Brevis couldn't do much as Suryakumar Yadav fell for a good-looking 32.

While wickets tumbled left, right and centre, CSK's fielding weren't upto the mark as the likes of Dhoni missed a stumping whereas captain Jadeja missed a few sitters. Eventually, Tilak Verma's 51 not out and handy cameos from Kieron Pollard-Jaydev Unadkat propelled MI to 155-7 in 20 overs. Along with Mukesh, Dwayne Bravo also chipped in with two key wickets.

In reply, CSK lost Ruturaj Gaikwad on the first ball of the run-chase. Daniel Sams struck at regular intervals to unsettle Chennai. Robin Uthappa, playing his 200th IPL game, played a chancy knock (25-ball 30) whereas Ambati Rayudu's 35-ball 40 held CSK innings. Dan Sams returned and removed Rayudu, in-form Shivam Dube whereas debutant Hrithik Shokeen held one end with his smart variations.

From 88 for 3, CSK were reduced to 106 for 6. Skipper Jadeja's poor form continued as the onus fell on Dwaine Pretorius and Dhoni. The South African also played his part, with two handy boundaries off Jasprit Bumrah, before passing on the baton to Dhoni, with 16 needed off the last four balls.

Dhoni looked in decent touch before the last over. However, he upped his game effortlessly in the last over against one of his favourite bowlers, Jaydev Unadkat. Dhoni went deep into the crease, anticipated the slower ones and bouncers to smash 6, 4, 2, 4 and take CSK past the finish line on the final delivery. The former Chennai captain remained unbeaten on 28 (13)* as the defending champions attained two crucial points.

Mumbai, on the other hand, is very much out of contention and have now achieved the worst-ever start by a team in an IPL season (with seven losses on the trot).

Pollard was looking quite dangerous with 14 off 8 balls thanks to a six and a four but Dhoni had the perfect plan to end his innings thanks to a brilliant series of field placements.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have their task cut out in a bid to stay alive in the playoffs race in IPL 2022 edition. The Ravindra Jadeja-led Yellow Army have not hit the ground running so far in the 15th season of the IPL, with only one win from six games.

The defending champions and four-time winners CSK got off the mark with a win over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) -- in what was their fifth encounter -- and were on top versus Gujarat Titans (GT), in defence of a competitive 171, before David Miller-Rashid Khan's blitz took Gujarat past the finish line. While Chennai's batting has been expressive, their bowling has continued to let them down in crunch situations. Given they are facing arch-rivals and five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI), who are the only team yet to get off the mark in IPL 2022, CSK will churn out their best XI to get the better of Mumbai on Thursday evening (April 21).

Predicting CSK's XI versus MI

With Ruturaj Gaikwad finally getting some runs under his belt in the game versus Gujarat, Robin Uthappa and he will continue to don the opening slots. Moeen Ali will follow suit at No. 3 with Ambati Rayudu, Shivam Dube, MS Dhoni, skipper Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo to form the middle and lower order. Chris Jordan was highly-expensive versus Gujarat, returning with 3.5-0-58-0, and looks set to make way for South African all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius -- who should never have been dropped in the first place as per many experts.

Mukesh Choudhary and Maheesh Theekshana will continue to hold onto their respective spots and hope to strike with a few wickets in the powerplay overs, the nemesis of CSK this season.

IPL 2022: Dwaine Pretorius for Chris Jordan? Predicting CSK's XI for marquee clash versus MI

Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are two of the most successful teams in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, although the two sides have won the tournament nine times between them, MI and CSK have been off to a horrible start in the ongoing season of the IPL.

While CSK have won just one game in their last six games, five-time winners MI are struggling at the bottom of the points table with not a single victory and the worst net run rate (-1.048).

The persistent problem for the two sides has been their bowling attacks with the teams not finding their proper combinations till now. The MI bowlers were completely outplayed in their last game against Lucknow Super Giants as KL Rahul slammed his third IPL century to guide his side to victory.

Similarly, CSK came really close to winning their match against Gujarat Titans but an impressive 51-ball-94 from David Miller made sure that the debutants were able to clinch the game in the final over.

MI vs CSK, IPL 2022 prediction:

It has been a disappointing season for both sides and a win will be very important for either of them to find slight momentum in the tournament. With seven losses in the competition till now, MI are having a total nightmare and as a result, CSK will be slightly ahead of them at the start of the match. The MS Dhoni-led side has shown some promise when it comes to their batting and against a weak MI bowling attack, they can march on to their second win of the IPL 2022.

MI vs CSK, IPL 2022 today match prediction: Who will win Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings clash?

Six matches and not a single win – It has been a horrible start to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season for Mumbai Indians. The five-time winners have struggled to get their team composition right and have already experienced their worst ever start to an IPL tournament.

Rohit Sharma & Co will be looking to clinch their first points of the season when they face defending champions Chennai Super Kings in a heavyweight clash at the DY Patil Stadium on Thursday.

In their previous encounter, the MI bowling attack was taken apart by KL Rahul who scored his third IPL century and although a number of Mumbai Indians batsmen got good starts, they were unable to convert them into big scores and as a result, MI fell short of the mammoth target by 18 runs.

With the team in deep trouble and reports suggesting an injury issue for fast bowler Tymal Mills, MI may end up making multiple changes to their playing Xi ahead of the CSK encounter.

Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan are expected to open the innings with Dewald Brevis and the in-form Suryakumar Yadav providing a lot of balance to the Mumbai Indian top order. The middle order will have Tilak Verma, Kieron Pollard and Tim David who is expected to replace Fabian Allen in the side.

In the bowling attack, Murugan Ashwin is expected to be the main spin option with Jaydev Unadkat partnering Jasprit Bumrah in the pace department. There are doubts over Tymal Mills following reports of an injury and Riley Meredith can be a good replacement for him because of his raw pace.

IPL 2022: Tim David to return? Mumbai Indians predicted XI against Chennai Super Kings

The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was keenly awaited. The excitement for each year's edition knows no boundaries. This time around, it went a level up as the ardent cricket fans welcomed the two debutant teams in the form of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT) in the cash-rich league.

The BCCI decided to expand the league by adding two more teams with an aim to give more opportunities to youngsters, some big names who often got sidelined and fans plenty more to cheer for. While a nervy start was expected from both Gujarat and Lucknow in IPL 2022, the two teams have taken the 15th season by storm and have announced their arrivals with a bang. Both GT and LSG have been the giant killers of IPL 2022, surpassing some big teams and surprising many without breaking much sweat.

1) Team compositions

Complete squad of Gujarat Titans for IPL 2022:

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Abhinav Sadarangani, David Miller, Wriddhiman Saha, Matthew Wade, Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson, Noor Ahmad, R Sai Kishore, Yash Dayal, Alzarri Joseph, Pradeep Sangwan, Varun Aaron, Rahul Tewatia, Dominic Drakes, Jayant Yadav, Vijay Shankar, Darshan Nalkande, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Sai Sudarshan

Complete squad of Lucknow Super Giants for IPL 2022

KL Rahul, Marcus Stoinis, Ravi Bishnoi, Quinton de Kock (wk), Manish Pandey, Manan Vohra, Evin Lewis, Jason Holder, Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya, K Gowtham, Ayush Badoni, Kyle Mayers, Karan Sharma, Mark Wood, Avesh Khan, Ankit Rajpoot, Dushmantha Chameera, Shahbaz Nadeem, Mohsin Khan, Mayank Yadav

Looking at both squads, it is safe to say that the newbies didn't get bogged down in the two-day mega auction, held in mid-February. They came with a clear plan: to fill their squads with multi-dimensional players, seasoned bowlers, a mix of domestic talents and foreign players. Their smart team composition is helping them reap rewards in the IPL 2022 edition so far.

2) Newness, fresh minds, new captains

Starting from scratch often helps, especially if it is going the distance in a big-ticket T20 tournament like the IPL. Both Gujarat and Lucknow have benefitted from a fresh and positive dressing room environment created since the beginning of the 15th season. With the leadership group being expanded in Team India, Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul have also put their best foot forward to showcase their credentials as GT and LSG skippers, respectively.

Meanwhile, the inclusions of Ashish Nehra, Gary Kirsten (for Gujarat) and Gautam Gambhir, Andy Bichel, Andy Flower (for Lucknow) in the coaching setup have led to role clarity for players, keeping things simple, sticking to basics, resorting to smart and tactical matchups. The presence of such stalwarts have given enough cushion to both the young captains and their respective players.

3) Playing fearlessly, without any past baggage

Both Lucknow and Gujarat have expressed themselves freely on the field, having no past baggage. While it helped both sides to settle their nerves by locking horns with each other on debut, they have only grown from strength to strength from thereon. In addition, the two teams have gained immensely with the repeated failures of two of the most successful IPL teams; i.e. Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

GT and LSG in IPL 2022 (after match 31):

Both sides have beaten defending champions CSK (once so far) whereas Lucknow have also beaten MI. Gujarat are yet to face MI.

In IPL 2016, the then debutant and now-defunct Gujarat Lions (GL) had topped the points table and reached Qualifiers 2. In IPL 2017, Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS), in their second season, had qualified for the final and lost the coveted title by a run (to MI). While Gujarat (under a totally different owner) and Lucknow both have started well in their first-ever IPL season, the duo are here for the long run and not just to fill in for a few seasons. Thus, they will hope to go the distance courtesy the strong foundation laid down and build something special for themselves in the IPL, where the eight original franchises have already carved out their own space and identity.

For now, it is just the start. But the start surely has been promising. Let's see what else is in store for the two newbies as they strive hard to gain prominence, value and recognition in the cash-rich league.

How newbies Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants have been the giant-killers in IPL 2022

The big-hitting David Miller blazed away to a 51-ball 94 as Gujarat Titans pulled off an incredible come-from-behind three-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in the IPL here on Sunday.

Leading the side in the absence of an injured Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan supported Miller with a 21-ball 40 as GT recovered from 16 for three, and then 48 for four, to seal one the greatest comebacks in the history of the league.

GT were set a target of 170. Needing 48 in 18 balls after an excellent 17th over by Dwayne Bravo, Rashid, inspired by Miller's monster sixes, hit Chris Jordan for three of his own maximums.

GT collected 25 runs from the over to reduce the equation to a gettable 23 from 12 balls.

More drama awaited the seesawing battle as Bravo dismissed Rashid and Alzarri Joseph off successive balls in the penultimate over.

Strangely enough, CSK skipper Ravindra Jadeja handed the ball to the battered Jordan for the final over, hoping that his experience and ability to wide yorkers would do the job for the yellow brigade. However, Miller had other ideas as he completed the job with a ball to spare.

In all, Miller smashed eight boundaries and six sixes, while Rashid had three maximums and two fours to his name during a match-turning partnership of 70 runs.

Earlier, Ruturaj Gaikwad finally found form with a 48-ball 73 before Gujarat Titans pulled things back to stop Chennai Super Kings at 169 for five. Gujarat Titans lost early wickets in their chase of 170, reeling at 16 for three in the fourth over.

Shubman Gill, who has played a few influential knocks this season, was out for a golden duck in the first over before the out-of-sorts Vijay Shankar too joined the former in the dugout.

Bowling with an action that is far from conventional, off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana sent back Abhinav Manohar (12) after accounting Shankar. Wriddhiman Saha's (11 off 18 balls) painstaking stay in the middle was brought to an end by CSK skipper Ravindra Jadeja as GT slipped to 48 for four in the eighth over.

But then, Miller and Rashid joined forces to seal the game in favour of their team. This was after the Titans bowlers did exceedingly well in the last six overs, conceding only 45 after a 92-run third-wicket stand between Gaikwad and Ambati Rayudu (46 in 31 balls).

Invited to bat, Gaikwad, who notched up his maiden IPL fifty of the season, added 92 off just 56 balls with Rayadu, rallying after CSK were in a spot of bother at 32 for two in the sixth over.

Gaikwad's knock was studded with five fours and as many sixes as he anchored the innings.

Rayadu hammered four boundaries and two sixes, playing second fiddle to Gaikwad, who was in his elements. After a sedate start, Gaikwad, in search of vital runs after a prolonged run of poor scores, upped the ante in the fourth over.

The 'local boy' flicked Yash Dayal (1/40) for his first maximum over the deep backward square region and then got a boundary off a top-edge. Gaikwad flicked pacer Mohammed Shami (1/20) for a boundary and then launched into Alzarri Joseph (2/34), smashing him for another maximum over mid-wicket. The elegant right-handed batter mixed caution with aggression and played a stylish pull shot over deep square-leg for a maximum off Joseph, who gave away 15 runs in the 11th over.

Gaikwad completed his fifty with a cheeky single.

In the company of Rayudu, he launched into Dayal and hit him for two boundaries and a six in the 12th over, from which 19 runs came.

Gaikwad then tore into Lockie Ferguson (0/46), pulling him for a six before playing an elegant cover drive to set it for CSK, who were 113 for two at that stage of the innings with seven overs still to go.

However, after threatening to score above 180-185, CSK lost the plot after losing Rayadu and Gaikwad in quick succession, slipping to 131 for four. While Rayadu gave a sitter to Vijay Shankar at sweeper-cover, in a bid to score quickly, Gaikwad perished in the 17th over.

A late onslaught by skipper Ravindra Jadeja (22 not out off 12 balls) and Shivam Dube (19) helped CSK close in on 170, with 18 runs coming in the final over bowled by Ferguson.

IPL 2022: David Miller, Rashid Khan shine as Gujarat Titans defeat Chennai Super Kings by three wickets

Former England cricket team skipper Michael Vaughan was not happy with Ravindra Jadeja’s captaincy during Chennai Super Kings’ loss against Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Sunday.

Vaughan questioned Jadeja’s captaincy for CSK this season and said that under the leadership of MS Dhoni, the team did not struggle to win matches in tough situations.

"As a new captain, you want to win tight games. Honestly, it wasn't a tight game, and they lost it. They should have easily won that game by 10 or 15 runs, and I can only imagine what would happen now. I don't remember seeing MS Dhoni lose too many games like that. You are never used to seeing MS' side lose a tight game and wouldn't have even let it get to be tight, "Vaughan told Cricbuzz.

Jadeja took over the captaincy role just ahead of the new season as Dhoni stepped down after serving as CSK skipper since the inception of IPL in 2008. Dhoni won four IPL titles and two Champions League T20 titles with Chennai Super Kings before stepping down this season.

Chennai Super Kings have lost five out of their six encounters this season with the side struggling in the ninth spot. The defending champions lost their previous encounter against Gujarat Titans with the match going to the final over but the CSK bowler were unable to defend the total.

GT were four wickets down with not even 40 runs on the board but a good partnership between David Miller and Rashid Khan meant that CSK faced their fifth loss of the competition.

'It wasn't a tight game': Former England skipper criticises Ravindra Jadeja after CSK's fifth IPL loss

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ravindra Jadeja and star all-rounder Dwayne Bravo were left fuming after teammate Shivam Dube misjudged David Miller's catch during his side's clash against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Sunday (April 17). Gujarat Titans defeated CSK by 3 wickets after successfully chasing down the target of 170 runs in a last-over thriller.

Batting first at the MCA Stadium in Pune, CSK rode on opener Ruturaj Gaikwad's 73 off 48 balls and Ambati Rayudu's 31-ball 46 to post a challenging total of 169 runs on the board in 20 overs. Despite getting off to a great start with the ball, CSK pacers faltered towards the end as a sensational cameo from Rashid Khan and David Miller's stunning knock took GT over the line in their run chase.

During Gujarat Titans' run-chase, CSK skipper Jadeja and Bravo were left furious after Dube's poor effort on the field. The incident happened in the 17th over of Gujarat Titans' innings when Miller mistimed a pull shot off the bowling of Bravo. The ball flew towards Dube at the midwicket region, who failed to judge the flight of the ball and didn't go for the catch.

Instead of attempting a dive and going all out for the catch, Dube wasted the half-chance as he stopped midway through run up and stopped the ball from going for a boundary after it had bounced off the ground. His poor effort left CSK skipper Jadeja fuming as he was spotted throwing his cap away in frustration.

Bravo was also left unhappy after the effort and was seen signalling another fielder to move to Dube's spot. The all-rounder was seemingly not happy and his frustration was justified as Miller went on to play a match-winning knock of unbeaten 94 off just 51 balls to help GT secure a thrilling win.

Dube was also distracted by the floodlights as he decided to not go for the catch at the last moment after pausing his run midway. However, his sloppy effort didn't please skipper Jadeja and bowler Bravo, who were both left disappointed after the half-hearted effort by the all-rounder.

CSK were well in control of the game till the 17th over of GT's run chase with the Rashid-led side requiring 48 runs to win off the last three overs. In the absence of regular skipper Hardik Pandya, stand-in skipper Rashid stood up and delivered with the bat as he smashed three sixes and a four against Chris Jordan in the 18th over to take 25 runs off it and bring the equation down to 23 off 12 balls.

Rashid was dismissed by Bravo in the 19th over after scoring 40 off 21 balls but did enough to allow Miller to take his side over the line comfortably. CSK have so far managed only one win in six games this season while GT are on the top of the points table with one loss and five wins in six matches.
