Brook is an obvious choice to replace Buttler, having previously led the international side against Australia late last summer. "Harry Brook is the obvious candidate to take over. He did it at the end of the summer against Australia," Hussain said of Brook, who leads the race to replace Buttler as England&rsquo;s white-ball captain.
"He's the obvious one with the amount of important cricket coming up for England. Do you want to put that pressure on a young man who's got an India series at home, an Ashes away and then a World Cup T20 in India and Sri Lanka? Or do you go to a stopgap, James Vince, Sam Billings, Lewis Gregory, seasoned, domestic, franchise captains to just do it for a while?&rdquo; he continued.
Hussain feels England must look forward and bring someone like Brook, who is talented and energetic and has shown glimpses of turning into a beast leader, which England&rsquo;s white-ball side needs.&nbsp;
"I think personally England don't look back, they look forward. If they think Brook is the next captain, they go to him as soon as possible so he can start learning about being captain. But obviously, the caveat is then there will be a lot on his plate,&rdquo; he added.&nbsp;
<h2>&lsquo;It&rsquo;s the best job in the world until&hellip;&rsquo;</h2>
Hussain, who had led England for four years (in Tests) from 1999 to 2003, thinks with no captaincy burden, Buttler can return to his (attacking) best.&nbsp;
"It's always very sad when an England captain has to feel like he has to stand down, and he was incredibly emotional walking out," Hussain said.
"It's the best job in the world until you have to give it away, and for one more day, he's England's white-ball captain, and the next day he's not. I can tell you that really hurts you. It's the best job in cricket.
"It's the right thing to do. His own form has diminished since he's been captain, especially in the last couple of years. He's England's best white-ball player, and the captaincy is not that good that it balances off the runs he should be getting,&rdquo; he concluded.

South Africa all-rounder Marco Jansen believes his team needs to do nothing more than usual to stand tall in the tense <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy</a> knockout stage. As a cricketing nation, South Africa is a force to reckon with, besides being at par with perhaps the best ODI units. Having made the semis in the past two ICC events, excluding reaching their maiden WTC Final this year, Jansen feels the Proteas can get the job done this time.
After the Australia-Afghanistan game ended in a no result, with rain playing spoilsport, England had to beat the Proteas by a daunting margin to help Afghanistan cruise ahead, which, however, didn&rsquo;t happen, as South Africa reached the Champions Trophy 2025 semis from Group B.
On Saturday, the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/dismal-england-end-champions-trophy-2025-campaign-on-winless-note-as-south-africa-win-group-b-8769237" rel="dofollow">Proteas beat England by seven wickets</a> to finish at the top, with the Aussies placed second in the standings. Their semis opponents, however, will be determined after the India-New Zealand match in Dubai on Sunday (Mar 2). Should India beat the Kiwis, South Africa will face New Zealand in the second semis on Wednesday, but if the Blackcaps prevail, the Proteas will take on India in the first semi-final on Tuesday (Mar 4) in Dubai.

Champions Trophy: Jansen unfazed by semis pressure as South Africa enter familiar knockout territory

New Zealand is unbeaten thus far in the ongoing <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy 2025</a>, with their toughest game (against India) on Sunday (Mar 2) saved for the last. On the other hand, India won their two matches played in Dubai, waiting for the Kiwi challenge on the sluggish UAE track. Though both teams have already qualified for the semis, this contest remains crucial to their table standings; Kiwi gun fielder <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/glenn-phillips" rel="dofollow">Glenn Phillips</a> feels his team is ready for it.
Phillips believes New Zealand has the right mix of bowlers to put India down in this dead rubber in Dubai. With seamers - William O&rsquo;Rourke and Matt Henry doing the job upfront and three spin bowling all-rounders, including their captain Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell, taking care of the middle order, Phillips admits his team has the exact tools needed to hand India its first loss in this tournament.

Backing the team's bowling attack to stay on top of India while admitting how crucial the plan execution would be in Dubai, Phillips said, &ldquo;It comes down to the execution on pitches like this. We've got two really good spinners [Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell], and then all-rounders in myself and Rachin Ravindra to be able to offer overs if we're needed.
&ldquo;And then we've got three high-quality pace bowlers - Matt Henry nips it on glass, and our two big tall boys [Kyle Jamieson and Will O'Rourke] that have got variable bounce and in Pakistan have been quite tough to play. I think that covers our bases quite nicely,&rdquo; he continued.
<h2>Master strategy</h2>
While India is the only team to play all its matches at one venue, including the knockouts (should they qualify for the finale), New Zealand has played all of it at different stadiums this time.&nbsp;
Winning against different teams at separate venues is a testament to New Zealand&rsquo;s steadiness and success as an ODI unit; against India in Dubai, they have their cards ready for the Super Sunday tie.&nbsp;

Shedding more light on this, Phillips said, "I think the beauty of Pakistan is every pitch we've played on has been significantly different to the last, and I&nbsp;think that's been great preparation for us coming over to Dubai, knowing that the pitch is going to be different again.&nbsp;
"We've had a lot of different situations, we've had balls that have spun, we've had surfaces that have been flat and fast, and boundaries that are small.
"This ground presents us with a different challenge of being potentially a little bit slower, more void of grass and maybe slightly slower outfields. So I think we pride ourselves on trying to be as adaptable as possible,&rdquo; he added.
Meanwhile, should New Zealand beat India in Dubai, they will face Australia in the second semis in Lahore on Wednesday (Mar 5); however, if India prevail in this marquee contest, New Zealand will take on the Proteas at the same venue.&nbsp;

Dismal England end Champions Trophy 2025 campaign on winless note as South Africa tops Group B

South Africa officially confirmed their place in the semifinal of the Champions Trophy 2025 after restricting England to 179 in their final group game on Saturday (March 1). The scenario meant Afghanistan could no longer finish in the top two in Group B even if South Africa lost the final group game against England. This also means all four berths in the Champions Trophy 2025 semis have been confirmed with the Proteas joining India, New Zealand and Australia. <o:p></o:p>

Playing in the final group match of the Champions Trophy 2025, South Africa needed to avoid a heavy defeat to secure a place in the semis. Restricting England to 179, meant Afghanistan were no longer in the race for a spot in the semis. For Afghanistan to play in the semis, they needed England to win by 207 runs, an equation out of hands after the former was restricted to a low score. <o:p></o:p>
Even in case of a washout South Africa will surpass Afghanistan on the points table while a defeat will see them end with a better Net Run Rate than the Asian side.

Champions Trophy 2025: South Africa confirm semis berth after England's horror batting show in Lahore

England&rsquo;s hopes of ending the Champions Trophy 2025 with a win were dashed on Saturday (March 1) after they faced a batting collapse against South Africa at the National Stadium in Karachi. One of the moments, however, caught the eye of netizens when Lungi Ngidi took a one-handed stunner to dismiss Jamie Overton. The spectacular dismissal led to England&rsquo;s batting collapse and ended the Champions Trophy 2025 without a win.

Champions Trophy 2025: Australia, South Africa to travel to UAE to avoid lack of preparation time

South African pace legend <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/dale-steyn">Dale Steyn</a> believes that Afghanistan has the potential to win an ICC limited-overs tournament within the next decade if their players develop patience in their approach.
Rising through the ranks despite the challenges of war and instability, Afghanistan has transformed from an affiliate member to a formidable force in white-ball cricket. Their performance in recent ICC tournaments has been impressive&mdash;they came close to reaching the knockouts in the 2023 ODI World Cup, securing victories over former champions England, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. They also reached the semifinals of the 2022 T20 World Cup, eliminating Australia along the way.

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Steyn pointed out that the Afghan players often lack patience, which is crucial in building an innings or constructing a spell.
&ldquo;We live in a time where people struggle with patience&mdash;we can barely watch two seconds of an Instagram story. It feels like Afghanistan&rsquo;s players approach their cricket in a similar way,&rdquo; Steyn remarked. &ldquo;They want things to happen immediately. Every ball must be a wicket; every shot must clear the ropes. Their batters often show excessive movement at the crease, trying to hit a six from the first over itself.&rdquo;
At the ongoing ICC <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a>, Afghanistan was in contention for a semifinal spot alongside Australia and South Africa, especially after their victory over England. However, their opening loss to South Africa proved costly, and their 'virtual quarterfinal' against Australia was washed out, leaving both teams to share points. While they still have a mathematical chance of qualifying if England thrashes South Africa by a huge margin, the odds remain slim due to the Proteas' superior net run rate (2.140 compared to Afghanistan&rsquo;s -0.990).
Steyn said that playing more four-day first-class cricket could help Afghan players cultivate the patience needed to excel in the longer white-ball formats.
&ldquo;Previously, players would improve their skills and patience by playing county or first-class cricket. Many Afghan players are involved in T20 leagues worldwide, which benefits them financially and provides valuable exposure. But spending time in four-day cricket might help them understand how to build an innings&mdash;after all, one-day cricket is essentially a condensed version of a Test match,&rdquo; he explained.

Shami had received treatment on his right leg during the Pakistan match on February 23, shortly after completing his third over. Given this, the team management may opt to rest him ahead of the crucial semi-finals.

India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has acknowledged that it's been really hard for ace wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant to be watching the ongoing Champions Trophy matches from the sidelines but that's the nature of sport at this level.
Pant has not been a part of the playing XI in the last two group games, with India handing over the wicket-keeping duties to KL Rahul, who has performed remarkably well behind the stumps and provided solidity to the middle order.
"It's been very hard on Rishabh not playing. But that's the nature of sport at this level, Doeschate told reporters on Friday, when asked if having two quality keepers has been a good dilemma.
"KL has been good. He didn't get many chances... We've got to keep Rishabh up and running. We never know when we're going to need him. But certainly to have two wicket-keepers of that calibre is a nice thing to have." Doeschate admitted that Sunday's match against New Zealand could be a contest of spin between the two sides.

Champions Trophy 2025: Shreyas Iyer surprises net bowler with special gift-WATCH

India's assistant coach, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ryan-ten-doeschate">Ryan ten Doeschate</a>, admitted that the team did not anticipate an 'over-reliance' on spin in the ongoing <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a>. He also addressed the unlikelihood of 300-plus scores on the Dubai pitch and provided insight into the Indian team&rsquo;s management structure.
India's spinners have been the backbone of the bowling attack in their first two group-stage matches. In the opener against Bangladesh, Mohammed Shami led the charge with a five-wicket haul, while the spinners played a crucial supporting role. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/axar-patel">Axar Patel</a> picked two wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/kuldeep-yadav">Kuldeep Yadav</a> kept the run rate under control with an economy below 5.00.
In the high-stakes clash against Pakistan, the spin department once again played a pivotal role. Kuldeep Yadav, in particular, proved to be a mystery for Pakistan&rsquo;s batting lineup, finishing with figures of 3/40. Meanwhile, the spin duo maintained pressure during the middle overs, preventing Pakistan from building momentum.
Speaking on the spinners&rsquo; impact, Ryan ten Doeschate said, "Yes, I think so. Now, with four spinners in the squad, spin is playing a major role. We weren&rsquo;t expecting such a heavy reliance on spin coming into the tournament, but the conditions have played a part, and the guys have bowled well. I expect the trend to continue in our next match."
Unlike Pakistani venues, Dubai has not been favorable for high scores. While Pakistan has witnessed several 300-plus totals, Dubai&rsquo;s pitches have made 270 a more realistic target. Ryan foresees a continuation of this pattern, suggesting that a total in the 280-290 range would be competitive.
"I wouldn&rsquo;t say it&rsquo;s difficult to bat, but we&rsquo;ve grown accustomed to scoring 320 with ease. However, on these pitches, reaching 320 has been challenging. The first two games suggest that 280-290 is a solid total if you bat well. It&rsquo;s different from playing in Pakistan, where 320-330 is the norm. Here, adaptation is key," he explained.
<h2 data-pm-slice="1 1 []">Doeschate hints at changes</h2>
With the team assured of a semifinal spot, India&rsquo;s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate hinted at potential changes in the bowling attack the final group-stage match against New Zealand on Sunday. However, he emphasised that maintaining the squad's balance remains a priority, as India aim to top Group A with an unbeaten record.
&ldquo;We've had two pretty intense training sessions, so preparation has been solid. In terms of squad rotation, our priority is to have our best players fit and available for the semifinal on March 4,&rdquo; Doeschate said.
&ldquo;At the same time, we don&rsquo;t want to keep them inactive for too long. So, we might share the bowling workload a bit, but our focus is still on winning against New Zealand. Maintaining momentum and topping the group is crucial,&rdquo; he added.

In the opener against Bangladesh, Mohammed Shami led the charge with a five-wicket haul, while the spinners played a crucial supporting role. Axar Patel picked two wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav kept the run rate under control with an economy below 5.00. In the high-stakes clash against Pakistan, the spin department once again played a pivotal role. Kuldeep Yadav, in particular, proved to be a mystery for Pakistan’s batting lineup, finishing with figures of 3/40. Meanwhile, the spin duo maintained pressure during the middle overs, preventing Pakistan from building momentum. Speaking on the spinners’ impact, Ryan ten Doeschate said, "Yes, I think so. Now, with four spinners in the squad, spin is playing a major role. We weren’t expecting such a heavy reliance on spin coming into the tournament, but the conditions have played a part, and the guys have bowled well. I expect the trend to continue in our next match." Unlike Pakistani venues, Dubai has not been favorable for high scores. While Pakistan has witnessed several 300-plus totals, Dubai’s pitches have made 270 a more realistic target. Ryan foresees a continuation of this pattern, suggesting that a total in the 280-290 range would be competitive. "I wouldn’t say it’s difficult to bat, but we’ve grown accustomed to scoring 320 with ease. However, on these pitches, reaching 320 has been challenging. The first two games suggest that 280-290 is a solid total if you bat well. It’s different from playing in Pakistan, where 320-330 is the norm. Here, adaptation is key," he explained. Doeschate hints at changes With the team assured of a semifinal spot, India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate hinted at potential changes in the bowling attack the final group-stage match against New Zealand on Sunday. However, he emphasised that maintaining the squad's balance remains a priority, as India aim to top Group A with an unbeaten record. “We've had two pretty intense training sessions, so preparation has been solid. In terms of squad rotation, our priority is to have our best players fit and available for the semifinal on March 4,” Doeschate said. “At the same time, we don’t want to keep them inactive for too long. So, we might share the bowling workload a bit, but our focus is still on winning against New Zealand. Maintaining momentum and topping the group is crucial,” he added. (With inputs from agencies)

Australia have been dealt a major blow ahead of the ICC&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> 2025 semi-finals, as opener Matthew Short sustained a calf injury on Friday (Feb 28), according to the ICC.
Short was injured while fielding and appeared hampered during his quickfire knock of 20 runs at the top of the order before rain led to the abandonment of Australia's match against Afghanistan in Lahore. Despite the nill result, Australia secured a place in next week's semi-finals, with their opponent yet to be determined based on the final two group-stage matches.

Champions Trophy 2025: Australia face setback as Matthew Short injured ahead of semifinals

India wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul acknowledged that rotating the strike during the middle overs against both spinners and pacers has been a challenge on the slower pitches at the Dubai International Stadium in the 2025 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a>. Batting second has been particularly tricky, with the surfaces offering turn, as seen in India&rsquo;s chases of 228 against Bangladesh and 249 against Pakistan.
Despite the conditions, India&rsquo;s batters have adapted well, with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shubhman-gill">Shubman Gill</a> and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/virat-kohli">Virat Kohli</a> scoring centuries to maintain momentum and minimise dot balls. However,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/kl-rahul">Rahul</a> admitted that the test will be tougher on Sunday (March 2) when India faces New Zealand in their final Group A match.
"Finding ways to rotate the strike quickly against both spinners and fast bowlers has been difficult. When dot balls pile up, the pressure increases, forcing batters to either take risks with big shots or play conservatively, which creates opportunities for the opposition. That has been the main challenge," Rahul said in Friday&rsquo;s pre-match press conference.

"We&rsquo;re working on reducing our dot ball percentage. While we all enjoy hitting boundaries, it's not always possible on these pitches. The key is to make smart decisions, choosing the right moments to take risks based on the conditions and bowlers," he added.
A crucial part of India's strategy has been discussing how to manipulate field placements to create gaps for singles. "Moving the fifth fielder strategically allows us to rotate the strike more effectively. If the top-order batters can build big scores, it eases the pressure on middle and lower-order players like Hardik (Pandya), Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja), or Axar (Patel) when they come in," Rahul explained.
<h2 data-start="1314" data-end="1725">'I am used to reading criticism'</h2>
To prepare better, Rahul has been consulting with his teammates, including Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, to gain insights into the wicket and understand which strokes work best.
"We&rsquo;re constantly talking within the group. Players like Shubman, Virat, and Shreyas have spent significant time at the crease, so we ask them about their approach&mdash;whether they targeted square of the wicket or played straighter. It&rsquo;s about understanding what works best for each individual," he said.
"Some players prefer sweeping or reverse sweeping, while others opt for aggressive shots down the ground or off the back foot. Each batter sticks to their strengths, practicing accordingly so that they can execute their plans in the middle," he added.
Addressing criticism on social media, Rahul said he has learned to handle it by assessing whether it is valid.
"I'm used to hearing and reading criticism. Sometimes, I reflect on it to see if it&rsquo;s justified. I will make mistakes in reading the game, and I will fail at times&mdash;that&rsquo;s the nature of sport. But as long as I play with the right intent and believe I&rsquo;m making the best decisions for my team, I can sleep peacefully. If the criticism is constructive, I take it into account," he signed off.

Champions Trophy 2025: Rotating strike against spinners or pacers is a challenge, admits KL Rahul

Afghanistan&rsquo;s hopes of playing in the semifinal of the Champions Trophy 2025 suffered heavy dents on Friday (Feb 28) after their contest against Australia was called off due to rain. The match at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore saw both Australia and Afghanistan share points in Group B. This meant Afghanistan and Australia ended their group stage campaign with the latter securing a last-four berth. However, Afghanistan&rsquo;s bid will stretch to Saturday depending on a certain set of results between South Africa and England. <o:p></o:p>
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Here's how Afghanistan can qualify for the semis<o:p></o:p></h2>
After the Afghanistan vs Australia contest was called off, the former ended with three points while the latter secured semis qualification with four points. The race for the second spot in the semis will be between South Africa and Afghanistan with the former playing England on Saturday. <o:p></o:p>
For Afghanistan to qualify for the semis, they need England to beat South Africa by at least 207 runs if they bat first, assuming that they score over 300 runs in the first innings. If they chase, they would have to do so in just 11.1 overs (considering that the first innings total is over 300).<o:p></o:p>

Champions Trophy 2025: Here's how Afghanistan can qualify for the semis after Australia washout

Australia qualified for the Champions Trophy semi-finals on Friday after their Group B match against Afghanistan ended without a result in persistent rain in Lahore on Friday.
Chasing 274 for victory at Gaddafi Stadium, Australia were 109-1 in 12.5 overs when rain stopped play, giving them four points in their three games.
<h2>Aussies in semis</h2>
Afghanistan, who have three points from two games, need England to beat South Africa by a big margin in Karachi on Saturday to sneak into the last four on net run-rate.
Afghanistan's -0.99 net run-rate is inferior to South Africa's 2.14 despite beating former world champions England by eight runs in Lahore on Wednesday.
Australia were well placed to chase down the target with opener Travis Head 59 not out.
Steve Smith was unbeaten on 19 after Matthew Short was dismissed for 20.
Heavy rain stopped play and as water pooled in the outfield, the umpires ended the match at 20:55 local time (1555 GMT).
Afghanistan had made 273 all out in 50 overs after winning the toss and batting first.&nbsp;
Sediqullah Atal hit 85 and all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai 67 as they sought a win to seal a semi-final berth themselves.
"It's a good result, and, that's what we were after at the start of the tournament," said Australia captain Smith.
"To finish in the top two and heading to the semis. It's satisfying so far."
Smith said opener Matthew Short was an injury doubt for next week's semi-final.
"I think he (Short) was struggling, wasn't moving well. I think he'll be struggling with the short gap between games," said Smith of Short who suffered a thigh injury and will be assessed.
India meet New Zealand in Dubai on Sunday which will decide the semi-final line-up, with the top team in Group A playing the second-placed team in Group B.
However, wherever India finish they will play the first semi-final in Dubai on March 4. The second semi-final will be in Lahore a day later.
Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi said he still hoped England could do his team a favour by thrashing South Africa.&nbsp;
"You never know. We still have hopes and we are waiting for that next game, hopefully England win big! Anything can happen in cricket," said Shahidi.
In overcast conditions, Afghanistan lost opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz for nought in the first over to Spencer Johnson.
Ibrahim Zadran, hero of Afghanistan's win over England in the first match with the highest-ever Champions trophy score of 177, added 67 for the second wicket with Atal before he fell for 22 to spinner Adam Zampa.

Atal and Shahidi (20) put on 68 for the fourth wicket before Australia fought back with four wickets for just 40 runs.
Atal's 95-ball innings included six fours and three sixes.
At 199-7 Afghanistan were in danger of being dismissed for a below-par total, but Omarzai held the innings together, smashing five sixes in a 63-ball knock and adding an invaluable 74 runs with the last three wickets.
Rashid Khan chipped in with a 17-ball 19 with two boundaries.
Ben Dwarshuis was the best Australian bowler with 3-47. Zampa took 2-48 and Johnson finished with 2-49.

Gill had led India during last year&rsquo;s five T20Is against Zimbabwe, which the Men in Blue won 4-1. However, he has&nbsp; never before got a chance to lead the senior side, let alone in any ICC event.

During India&rsquo;s marquee game against Pakistan the past Sunday in Dubai, Rohit felt discomfort (in his hamstring) midway through Pakistani batting, briefly leaving the field for a usual check-up during the 26th over. Though he opened alongside Gill during the chase, scoring 20, including one six and three fours, Rohit opted out of India&rsquo;s first training session ahead of the New Zealand tie.
Rohit watched the scheduled three-hour training session from a distance while conversing with his teammates and head coach Gautam Gambhir, discussing strategies. The only silver lining from his presence in that training was he ran a bit, indicating the injury is not as serious, and that he can return to the XI in time for India&rsquo;s semis clash on Tuesday (Mar 4).&nbsp;
<h2>Who replaces Rohit?</h2>
Should Rohit decide to sit out, India will rope gloveman Rishabh Pant in his place, making him bat in the middle order, with regular keeper KL Rahul returning to the opening slot with Gill.&nbsp;
Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer will be number three and four, respectively, while the three all-rounders Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel will shuffle given the match conditions.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, Washington Sundar is another name discussed to replace Rohit in the playing XI for a dead rubber against the Kiwis. The left-handed Sundar batted for a lengthy period during the nets, something not seen in the tournament training before this.&nbsp;
India could rest Harshit Rana and rope in Arshdeep Singh in the bowling department, while Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav might retain their places.&nbsp;

Shubman Gill to make ODI captaincy debut against New Zealand in Champions Trophy – Report

India and Pakistan are the two Asian cricketing giants, playing each other in just ICC-bound tournaments or Asia Cup. While tense political relations between both countries have restricted them from indulging in any bilateral cricket whatsoever, talks of its resumption have been underway. Speaking on the same lines, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/sunil-gavaskar" rel="dofollow">Sunil Gavaskar</a> said no bilateral cricket will happen unless there is peace at the border.
India and Pakistan last played a bilateral series in late 2012, when Pakistan toured India and won the ODIs (2-1). Since then, the two teams have met in just ICC events, including the ODI World Cups, T20 World Cups and Champions Trophy, with countless fans worldwide enjoying each contest.

Both sides last met during the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">ICC Champions Trophy 2025</a> group stage game in Dubai, where India equalled Pakistan&rsquo;s head-to-head win tally (3-3) in this competition with a six-wicket victory over the Men in Green.
"Frankly, by having peace at the borders. It&rsquo;s very simple. If there&rsquo;s peace at the borders, then I think both governments will certainly say, 'Look, okay, we&rsquo;ve had no incidents, nothing at all. So, let&rsquo;s at least start with talking,&rsquo;" Gavaskar said while speaking on the cricket show Dressing Room, as quoted by Times of India (TOI).
India last toured Pakistan almost two decades ago for a bilateral tour, with the 2008 Asia Cup being the last time they played in the country altogether. Even for the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025, BCCI denied sending its team to Pakistan for the eight-team tournament.
After formally informing ICC about its decision, the BCCI persuaded the apex body to convince the host board (PCB) to agree to the hybrid model, which they denied (at first) but later accepted. However, they put on some conditions, which their counterpart (the BCCI) agreed to.
<h2>What can lead to resumption?</h2>
Gavaskar feels for any cricket between just the two to get underway, maintaining peace outside of the cricket ground is paramount, and unless that happens, nothing concrete will take place despite diplomatic talks.

Afg vs Aus Champions Trophy 2025: All you need to know, check live streaming, head-to-head, stats, pitch report, squad

Former Pakistan captain and gloveman Rashid Latif dropped a bombshell explaining why batting great Younis Khan chose to mentor Afghanistan over his country during the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy 2025</a>. After the hosts got knocked out of the home tournament in the group stage, courtesy of two losses and a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/pakistan-remain-winless-in-home-champions-trophy-after-washed-out-bangladesh-tie-8762162" rel="dofollow">washed-out tie</a>, while Afghanistan remained in contention for a historic semis spot, Rashid said the lack of financial benefits forced Younis to pick their opponent for the mentorship role.
Younis joined Afghanistan&rsquo;s backroom staff ahead of the eight-team tournament as the mentor, joining head coach Jonathan Trott, under whom Afghanistan tasted enormous success in the past two years. Younis&rsquo; signing proved vital for Afghanistan, who posted a mammoth 325 against England in their do-or-die game in Lahore, emerging as winners eventually by eight runs.
Already upbeat to take on any cricketing giant on a bigger stage, Afghanistan&rsquo;s batting looked composed, impressing all. How their middle order contributed against lethal English bowlers indicated how far they have come in international cricket.&nbsp;
On the other end, Pakistan batters lacked zeal and intent and looked timid during their two matches against New Zealand and India, losing both. While they failed to chase 321 in the tournament opener in Karachi, Pakistan couldn&rsquo;t defend a paltry 242 against their arch-rivals, with Virat Kohli scoring a match-winning hundred.

&ldquo;Younis Khan said no to Pakistan cricket to work with Afghanistan. There are no financial benefits here," Latif said during a Geo News show episode after Afghanistan knocked England out of Champions Trophy 2025.
Meanwhile, Naseeb Khan, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) chief executive, defended this appointment.
"Since the Champions Trophy is being held in Pakistan, it was essential to appoint an experienced and talented mentor from the host country. We have previously benefited from working with mentors from host nations during the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup,&rdquo; he explained.
<h2>Afghanistan up for Aussie challenge</h2>

Sports, Cricket: Younis joined Afghanistan’s backroom staff as the mentor, joining head coach Trott, under whom Afghanistan tasted enormous success in the past two years.

Former Pakistan captain and gloveman Rashid Latif dropped a bombshell explaining why batting great Younis Khan chose to mentor Afghanistan over his country during the Champions Trophy 2025. After the hosts got knocked out of the home tournament in the group stage, courtesy of two losses and a washed-out tie, while Afghanistan remained in contention for a historic semis spot, Rashid said the lack of financial benefits forced Younis to pick their opponent for the mentorship role. Younis joined Afghanistan’s backroom staff ahead of the eight-team tournament as the mentor, joining head coach Jonathan Trott, under whom Afghanistan tasted enormous success in the past two years. Younis’ signing proved vital for Afghanistan, who posted a mammoth 325 against England in their do-or-die game in Lahore, emerging as winners eventually by eight runs. Already upbeat to take on any cricketing giant on a bigger stage, Afghanistan’s batting looked composed, impressing all. How their middle order contributed against lethal English bowlers indicated how far they have come in international cricket. On the other end, Pakistan batters lacked zeal and intent and looked timid during their two matches against New Zealand and India, losing both. While they failed to chase 321 in the tournament opener in Karachi, Pakistan couldn’t defend a paltry 242 against their arch-rivals, with Virat Kohli scoring a match-winning hundred. We have previously benefited from working with mentors from host nations during the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup,” he explained. Afghanistan vs Australia is a treat for the masses, at least considering the last two outcomes. For the third time in three years, both teams are squaring off in an ICC event, this time in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy 2025</a>, where rain might play spoilsport at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Friday (Feb 28).
The rain had already washed out Australia&rsquo;s previous league game against the Proteas, resulting in both teams sharing points. However, should it similarly affect Friday&rsquo;s outcome, Afghanistan and Australia will share a point each, with Australia collecting four (in total), while Afghanistan will end the tournament with three points.
Though four points will help Australia punch the semis ticket, with their final position (on the table) remaining uncertain, Afghanistan's three points could come in handy in the race for the remaining fourth spot only if England prevails over the Proteas in their last league match. In that case, Afghanistan and South Africa will share three points each as the team with better NRR cruises through.

However, should the Afghanistan-Australia game end in a no result, and South Africa beat England in Karachi on Saturday (Mar 1), the Aussies and the Proteas will march into the knockouts, with the Proteas holding the top spot with five points while Australia will be second with four. Who their opponents would be would depend on the result of the India vs New Zealand match in Dubai on Sunday (Mar 2).
Meanwhile, India and New Zealand have already qualified for the Champions Trophy semis, with the hosts Pakistan and Bangladesh knocked out of the tournament. Also, regardless of where India finishes on the points table, they will play their semifinal game on Tuesday (Mar 4) in Dubai, while the Kiwis&rsquo; semis clash is scheduled the next day in Lahore.

Afghanistan and Australia perhaps played the greatest World Cup game at the Wankhede in Mumbai a couple of years ago, with the Aussie all-rounder Glenn Maxwell going bonkers. Chasing 292, Australia was down 91 for seven at one stage, with captain Pat Cummins and Maxwell at the crease.&nbsp;
That, however, was the beginning of the greatest ODI innings of all time.&nbsp;

Rain threatens to spoil Afghanistan-Australia Champions Trophy showdown in Lahore

India is to play all its matches in Dubai, including the semis and the final (should they qualify for it), instead of in Pakistan &ndash; the host country, for security reasons. While the remaining seven teams are to play their league matches at different venues and pitches, also considering the travel required, several, including Pat Cummins, have pointed out the disadvantages their teams have around it.

After the ICC finalised Pakistan as the venue for the first showpiece event of the year, the BCCI decided against sending its team across the border for security concerns. The Indian board then persuaded the apex body to convince the PCB to accept the hybrid model, which they denied initially. Following thorough internal discussions, the host board agreed to it later but with several conditions, which the BCCI had to agree to.
Meanwhile, speaking on the same lines ahead of his side&rsquo;s crucial game against England, Rassie said he seconds with all the pointers claiming India's advantage in this tournament, adding it&rsquo;s up to them to utilise it to their benefit.
"It's definitely an advantage. I saw that Pakistan was commenting about it, but it's definitely an advantage. If you can stay in one place, stay in one hotel, practice in the same facilities, play in the same stadium, on the same pitches every time, it's definitely an advantage," Rassie said from Karachi, where South Africa will play England.&nbsp;
"I don't think you have to be a rocket scientist to know that. The onus would be on them to use that advantage. In a sense, it puts more pressure on them because whoever is going to play them in the semi or potentially the final is going to go there, and the conditions are going to be foreign, but they [India] are going to be used to it. The pressure would be on them to get it right because they have all that knowledge,&rdquo; he continued.
<h2>Preferences</h2>
While India and New Zealand have qualified for the semis from Group A, the fight for the remaining two spots continues in Group B, where the Proteas and Australia are in the pole position to advance. Should South Africa beat winless England at the National Stadium, they will cruise ahead; but the question remains, whom and where would they play their semis clash against?

Depending upon their positions on the points table, South Africa would either play India in Dubai (on Tuesday) or New Zealand in Lahore (on Wednesday). Asked what his preferred venue is, Rassie said logistically it has to be in Pakistan.&nbsp;
"If it's a personal thing, I would say playing in Lahore because it's just good to bat there. The Dubai pitch is not as high-scoring as the Lahore but no, I don't think it really matters," he said.&nbsp;
"Probably, logistically it will be easier to play in Lahore. You don't have to go through an international flight and go to Dubai and literally go to another country to play. Lahore is not too far from where we are at the moment, so conditions are fairly similar. It's literally one of those things, we don't know what's going to happen until Saturday evening,&rdquo; he continued.&nbsp;

Champions Trophy: Van der Dussen seconds India's 'schedule advantage' claim as semis loom

Pakistan’s Champions Trophy campaign ends without a single win, triggering strong political reactions. PM Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice and is set to address the debacle in Parliament. Meanwhile, Pakistan-Bangladesh's final game was washed out in Rawalpindi, marking a disappointing end for both teams.

Pakistan's winless champions trophy exit sparks political uproar

Pakistan&rsquo;s cricket hit another low on Thursday (Feb 27) after the side exited the Champions Trophy without a win despite being the hosts of the tournament. The defending champions saw their final game washed out against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi, meaning they failed to win any of the three matches in the Champions Trophy 2025. The exit has not gone well, with reports that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will personally look into the matter while it will also be discussed in the cabinet meeting and the parliament.
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Pakistan PM to take note of CT exit</h2>
"The prime minister will personally take notice and we will also ask him to raise these [cricket-related] issues in the cabinet as well as in parliament," PM Shehbaz Sharif's aide on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah said while speaking on Geo News' programme "Geo Pakistan" on Thursday.
Having lost to New Zealand and India in their opening two matches of the Champions Trophy 2025, Pakistan were optimistic about a favourable result on Monday. However, Bangladesh&rsquo;s defeat to New Zealand confirmed the hosts&rsquo; exit from the tournament. There was pride up for stake in the final group stage match on Thursday, however, the washout meant neither Pakistan nor Bangladesh ended the tournament with a win.

The poor run means Pakistan have exited the last three ICC tournaments in the initial stage. Pakistan were knocked out in the league stage of the 2023 ODI World Cup, while a run of poor results in the 2024 T20 World Cup also saw them exit in the group stage. Not since reaching the 2022 T20 World Cup final has Pakistan enjoyed a good run in an ICC tournament.
It is widely expected that Pakistan cricket will undergo major changes in the coming days, with domestic cricket to be given more weight. Young players are expected to feature in the side, while the role of senior players will be limited.
