The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to nationwide lockdown in India and while it is important to stay home, it has also raised concerns for daily wage earners who have been adversely affected due to the pandemic.

Superstar Amitabh Bachchan has announced that he would be providing ration of 1,00,000 daily wage earners of the film fraternity. Bachchan has joined hands with Sony Pictures Networks India and Kalyan Jewellers for this initiative.
"Given the unprecedented nature of the situation we are in, an initiative undertaken by Mr Bachchan, We Are One has been supported by Sony Pictures Networks India and Kalyan Jewellers, through which the monthly ration of 1,00,000 households across the country will be funded," a statement released by Sony Pictures Networks on Sunday read.

"Through a commercial tie-up with a leading chain of hypermarkets and grocery stores in India, digitally barcoded coupons have been distributed to a verified list of workers from the All India Film Employees Confederation.
Furthermore, monetary help has also been extended to those in need," the statement further said.

The time period of this initiative is not clear, yet. In fact, Big B is not the only one. Producers guild too has been providing ration to daily wage earners. Several technicians on film sets are paid on per day basis and due to the lockdown, their incomes have been deeply affected.

The superstar has been an active voice in spreading awareness around coronavirus right from the time PM Narendra Modi initiated the junta lockdown. Big B has already been part of an awareness video initiated by the Maharashtra government and will also be seen in another short film 'Family', which has been conceptualized and directed by Prasoon Pandey. The film will be aired on April 6.

The beauty of TVF's new web series 'Panchayat' lies in subtle moments. Directed by Deepak Kumar Mishra and streaming on Amazon Prime, it is a story of one Abhishek Tripathi who is a reluctant public servant. Abhishek takes up the job of a secretary of a Panchayat in Phulera village in Uttar Pradesh because he has been unable to crack the interviews of any big company in the city. He chooses a job that pays Rs 20,000 over the option of sitting at home and on his arrival to the remote village repents it completely.

Things are not in place right from the beginning. His office-cum-home isn't livable, there are regular power cuts in the evening, there are the usual orthodox ways in which the village operates, there is patriarchy and ever so often Abhishek finds himself lost in a society that is different from the city life that he is used to.

His co-workers are amiable and cheerful, much to Abhishek's annoyance initially. There is the Pradhan (Raghubir Yadav) who is not the elected leader but runs the show in place of his wife (Neena Gupta) who is the actual village head. There is also a deputy head Prahlad (Faisal Malick) who is more interested in food than work and Sahayak Vivek (Chandan Roy) who eventually becomes Abhishek's friend and confidante.

Abhishek is miserable from the first day in the village after being coaxed by his high-flying friend, he starts studying for CAT which becomes his only motivation to stay put in the village. After all work experience at the grassroot level always counts when seeking admission in B- school. He is no Mohan Bhargav of 'Swades', and is unwilling to be a party to petty fights and problems that he encounters in the village but always reluctantly and sometimes due to selfish interest ends up dealing with them.

The series is 8 episodes long and each episode very subtly deals with problems of patriarchy, dowry and superstitions. The story, of course, focuses on Abhishek and his life in the village but in his reluctance and self-interest he ends up becoming a crusader, solving issues, breaking myths and even dismissing age-old folklore. Not once does the narrative turn preachy but the screenplay by Chandan Kumar is nuanced and subtle driving home some relevant points and avoiding to sound like sermons.

The writing is very effective. It fills up the narrative with sweet, humourous moments and never drags. You feel Abhishek's frustration at being stuck in a village which shuts down at 7 in the evening, you feel his anguish when he goes on a rant about he doesn't feel connected to the place, you smile when the Pradhan and his two aids set up a mini picnic in the middle of a forest to brighten up Abhishek's Saturday night and you nod in agreement when the woman of the house suddenly bursts out about how painful it is two have more than two children. There are so many issues that the series takes up, and all beautifully included in the narrative.

Watch out for the moments where Abhishek takes on an egoistic groom, the time the group of four get involved in a 'gang war' and the episode involving a revolving chair. Some beautiful, funny moments tucked into a story full of warmth.

Good writing is also propelled by great performances from the cast. Jitendra Kumar, a regular at TVF, is the main lead. As Abhishek, he delivers a restraint performance- and never falters. He is the central character of the story, but there is ample weightage given to Raghubir Yadav- a veteran who emotes through his eyes throughout the series and Neena Gupta who even in limited screen time, is a scene-stealer.

Special mention to actor Chandan Roy who plays the innocent, helpful Vikas to the hilt. Much like TVF's previous shows, this one too has great camera work by Amitabh Singh and beautiful music by Anurag Saikia.

'Panchayat' is the perfect watch in the days of lockdown. It makes you smile ever so often, drives home some relevant points and reminds us all that simple living is perhaps the way forward.

TV star and singer Meiyang Chang has revealed that he was subjected to racist slurs recently amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Chang, who has acted in YRF's 'Badmash Company' and is a known face on TV has revealed that he has been called coronavirus online and even called corona by two men on a bike while he was jogging near his house in Mumbai a few days back.

Chang took to twitter to write, “In times of crisis, some human beings devolve into the worst versions of themselves. Or may be that was them all along? In light of the online & public #racism & discrimination against North-East Indians & the Indian-Chinese And thank you everyone for your unstinting humanism & love since this article broke yesterday (or today, depending on which city you are in). I’m reading your messages and I’m so, so touched by your kind words. Let’s stay united; in spirit & in philosophy. Now and always And to those stray trolls who are still spewing venom on my timeline; I say to you, as we would back in Bihar-Jharkhand..Bhak sala tum to sala mere pyar ke bhi kaabil nahi ho lekin tumko bhi dirghyaau bhavah”.Stay safe, stay healthy everyone.”

Trust Shah Rukh Khan to make a conversation hearty. In a new Twitter/Instagram video, the Bollywood star spoke to his fans on coronavirus.

Addressing one and all, Shah Rukh can be seen talking about the symptoms of COVID-19 by taking help of his films from which he picks scenes to educate the viewers/ listeners.

He mentioned films like ‘Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman’, ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’, ‘Chennai Express’ and others. He even spoke about using the right kind of masks and not the kind his character wore in films like ‘Baazigar’ and ‘Badshah’.

With black sunglasses, denim jacket, long hair swept inside a beanie, Shah Rukh Khan sure looks like he’s enjoying his quarantine time keeping himself engaged.

His post s tagged, “InshaAllah #JantaCurfew will help against the spread of virus, though we may have to do this again. The clapping brought so much cheer. So a reminder of safeguards, with some cheer... Pls take it in the right spirit. To all relentlessly working today - Extremely Grateful. Thx!”

He even spoke about using the right kind of masks and not the kind his character wore in films like ‘Baazigar’ and ‘Badshah’.
In times of a lockdown when meeting near and dear ones have become a distant reality, Bollywood couple Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal are giving company to each other virtually.

In an Instagram story both Richa and Ali posted, he is seen bantering with his fiancé. Their conversation will have one in splits. Evidently missing each other, the video has Ali lying on his couch and Richa on hers as they discuss the information around Covid 19. “I hate cooking but I am doing it three times a day,” Richa says. Ali asks her, “Are you washing your hands?” They ask each other if they are taking their vitamin supplements. “Mere paas Vitamins D-3, B-12 hai, tumhare paas kya hai,” asks Richa in a Deewar-like dialogue.

With the video, the couple sends out a message of checking on your loved ones constantly at a time of social distancing.

View this post on Instagram . . . .
As coronavirus scare looms over the world with films shoots, concerts and other mega events getting cancelled, another thing that has hit our Bollywood folks is the wedding cancellations.

This year, we were to see two Bollywood weddings -- Richa Chadha with Ali Fazal and Varun Dhawan with Natasha Dalal. But according to reports, the two couples have decided to postponed their weddings in lieu of coronavirus epidemic. The two couples were supposed to tie the knots this summer.

Apparently, Varun and Natasha were planning on a destination wedding in Thailand which later got shifted to Jodhpur and then finally to Mumbai. But the plans stand cancelled as of now.

A source quoted in a daily said, “The initial plan was to have an intimate wedding on a private island in Thailand, but it was scrapped last month in favour of a destination wedding in Jodhpur. Eventually, they called that off too and were considering having a low-key ceremony in Mumbai. But looking at the current scenario, they have decided to tentatively push the shaadi to November and have reverted to their original choice of destination — Thailand.”

A source close to the couple was quoted, “Many of their guests were to fly in from the US and Europe for the do. Also, the couple was hoping to have their nuptials in Delhi, which is currently on a partial lockdown. So, they think it’s best to delay the wedding to later this year.”

Salman Khan urges netizens to greet with namaste, salaam amid Coronavirus scare

Contrary to rumours, Chinese superstar Jackie Chan is not being treated for coronavirus. The deadly virus, which originated in China and has now spread to West Asia and Europe has at least over 100 cases confirmed in Hong Kong alone- where the actor was born and raised. Nearly 6000 buildings in Hong Kong have been under quarantine which is perhaps why Chan's quarantine rumour started.

Assuring fans that he was alright, Chan issued a statement on Monday. He said, "Recently, my staff told me about the news that's been circulating around the world, saying that I've been placed under quarantine for COVID-19. Firstly, I'd like to take this opportunity to say 'thank you' for everybody's concern! I'm very healthy and safe and haven't been quarantined. I've received many messages from friends asking if I'm ok. Your love and concern is so heartwarming. Thank you! I've also received some very special gifts from fans all over the world during this very difficult time. Thank you for the face masks. Your thoughtfulness is well received! And I've asked my lovely staff to donate your kindness through official organizations to those who need it most."

And I've asked my lovely staff to donate your kindness through official organizations to those who need it most." View this post on Instagram Thanks for everybody's concern!
Yami Gautam who arrived Guwahati this weekend, found herself embroiled in a controversy when a video of her pushing away a local fan came to light.

In the video, Yami can be seen arriving at the Guwahati airport with her team and a local fan rushes to welcome her with an Assamese gamosa- a traditional scarf used to welcome guests in the state. As the man approaches the actress and tries to wrap the scarf around her neck, the actress pushes his hand away and her team asks him to back off.

The video has gone viral ever since, with many accusing Yami of 'disrespecting' the Assamese traditional garment and hurting sentiments.
