Essaying the role of a smart and glamorous woman named Sameera Khanna, the film tackles issues of online data security and cyber crime in an engaging story of love and pain.

Talking about her debut film, personal take on cyber crime and laws regarding it and Priyanka Chopra’s Grammys 2020 dress, Hina Khan spoke to WION in an exclusive conversation.

Opening up about her first feature film, Hina said, “Hacked is a thriller on hacking and stalking about this girl Sameera Khanna aka Sam in the film, a fashion editor whose life goes for a toss when one fine day she finds out that a 19-year-old boy has become obsessed with her, to the point of him becoming psychotic for her. This is the story of millions as it’s happening to so many people today.”
She added, “This is a sensitive and important subject to be talked about. This is why I took up the project. I broke down several times while shooting thinking of all that many women are suffering from.”

The film, however dark, has been a learning for the actress as Hina admits to having taken a lot from it. She doesn’t keep pictures on her iCloud, doesn’t save banking details or any pin numbers on her mobile ever since she understood how easy it is for hackers to clone one’s phone and transfer details into another device.

Hina also mentioned that more than laws, which already exist, people need to be more cautious about what they store in their phones. “Before you go to anyone and file a report, there are certain don’ts and do’s to follow. You might not post something online but if you have it on your phone there is always a risk of data getting leaked or stolen. When we didn’t have this technology, everybody remembered phone numbers, bank account details and more,” said Hina on being vigilant of your data.

But interestingly, Hina doesn’t spare too much thought on hackers as she believes in today’s age and date, public figures abroad take control of their lives in their hands in the wake of a hack and share that piece of information with their fans even before the hacker can attempt.

Hina, who is also known for her glamour quotient -- wooing audiences with her stint at Bigg Boss, Cannes and other such public platforms, said it’s important to experiment. “Whenever we decide outfits for me, I like to try different things. In one word, my styling advice to all girls out there, is to experiment.”

The actress also opined on Priyanka Chopra’s scintillating Grammys 2020 appearance that had the world talking. When asked what she thought of her look like a style diva herself, Hina said, “Today only I read somewhere that she is going to be a part of ‘Matrix 4’ cast. All I want to tell anyone who is trolling her for the dress, dude you’re not even half where she is! She doesn't give a damn. Keep trolling her and she will keep climbing higher. She has taken India to a huge level. She is a global star and you have the audacity to troll her on her dress. I challenge the trolls to wear the dress for ten minutes. It’s easy to wear flowy and covered clothes. I know how difficult it is to wear such dresses and she is wearing it with so much grace, elegance and class.”

“The worse is that the Indian media is trolling her. When someone from abroad wears a plunging neckline till the navel, it is okay but when Priyanka Chopra does it, it becomes an issue. Priyanka looked gorgeous. The dress was revealing but she's okay wearing it. She is walking the Grammys,” stressed Hina furious at people trolling good friend Priyanka on her choice of dress.

Just as he promised, director Anubhav Sinha is back with another important message seeped into the narrative of his next story, ‘Thappad’ starring Taapsee Pannu in a leading role.

The director shared the trailer of ‘Thappad’ as Taapsee plays a doting wife in the film but wants to divorce her husband as he slaps her at a party after hearing some bad news from his office folks. The trailer starts from Taapsee sitting with a divorce lawyer as the latter asks reason behind the divorce hinting at a possible extramarital or history of domestic abuse and other such stuff. Taapsee can be heard telling her that the only reason why she wants to break the marriage is that one slap.

The trailer then forwards to the said incident when this happens and how before that, they were like any other healthy and much-in-love young couple. There are scenes of both sides of parents asking her to stick around and try to make the marriage work.

There is also a scene where a female help tells Taapsee that she too is beaten by her husband but she forgets about it every morning because what if he locks the door from inside one day and “I will not have any place to stay?”.

A global icon, the youngest Nobel Prize laureate and a champion for children’s right to education, Pakistan’s Malala Yousafzai dons these many hats and more.

A strong female voice and an undeterred young woman who took on Taliban militants in the wake of an imminent threat to life, her story is now coming to the big screen in the form of an Indian film ‘Gul Makai’, a biographical drama. Helmed by Amjad Khan, the film is set to release in the theatres on January 31, 2020.

In conversation with WION, Amjad Khan opened up on why he thinks activist Malala Yousafzai is not a Pakistani, ‘Gul Makai’ not having a Pakistani identity and why he thinks it won’t release there.

‘Gul Makai’ essentially means corn plant flower. It’s the pseudonym Malala used when she wrote blogs for BBC. The filmmaker used the same name for his film, as an ode to her brave spirit as she continues to inspire a million girls around the world.

“I believe Malala is not from Pakistan because if she was from there, then after she was given a Nobel Peace Prize, Pakistan would have invited her. Even after she was given the title of a Peace Ambassador, Pakistan has not invited her officially. She does not stay there. Last time she went to her hometown in Pakistan, barring a few media channels who spoke with her, she is not welcome in the country. I don’t think that she is a Pakistani. She was born there but I think she is a citizen of the world,” said Amjad as he spoke of his film not having a Pakistani identity.

He added, “She is a world icon, woman advocate who is currently working on education and environment issues.”

On how he thinks the Indian audience will perceive the film, Amjad said, “I don’t think there will be any problem in India. India is a generous country, it accepts everybody.”

While Amjad believes that Malala Yousafzai might be born a Pakistani but she is a world citizen, there is still a divide within the Indian audiences that would purview the film from that lens. On this, he said, “There’s been some tension between India and Pakistan since Pulwama attacks, but have we stopped listening to ghazals?”

The filmmaker wants the world to see what happened in Malala’s life that courted the world’s interest but sadly the film won’t release in Pakistan. Amjad confirmed our doubts and said, “No, it’s difficult” and explained, I know this because when I organised a film screening in London for dignitaries and diplomats of the UN including those from Pakistan, they told me so. There were 8 diplomats from Pakistan including Sanam Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto’s sister. The others were scholars and reporters from Pakistan. There were people from India too.”

He continued, “When I met them (Pakistani dignitaries) over dinner the same day post-screening, they told me that while the film is good, we won't let it release in Pakistan. They said, ‘You have shown a lot of truth in the film. That truth will come in front of the people.’ When I said that everybody already knows what happened, they countered saying ‘only a few know what actually happened -- people from a certain section of the society like the intellectuals and politically active people but films reach masses’.”

Watch Amjad Khan speak to WION here:

The news of ‘Gul Makai’ not up for release in Pakistan even though it features a prominent name from their country is saddening but would hardly surprise people as recently another controversial film’s release has been put on hold -- ‘Zindagi Tamasha’. Responding to this, Amjad said, “From 2012 to 2014, Pakistan banned YouTube in the entire country. We, here in India get troubled, if for two months the internet is suspended in Kashmir. In Pakistan on the other hand, it remains shut for years. Pakistan is a country where there are fundamentalists, diplomats and people with different sets of ideologies. To comment on that country is to waste one’s time.”

However, Amjad feels passionately towards Malala's story and promises to have made ‘Gul Makai’ without any gimmicks. “I have shown everything that happened in Malala’s life. There are portions in the film where you can hear chants of ‘Pakistani Army Zindabad’ and there are also portions where they are shown losing a fight with Taliban militants -- a reel-life portrayal of Raah-e-Rast in which the army lost against the militants." (In legalese, it was called The Second Battle of Swat also known as Operation Rah-e-Rast that began in May 2009 and involved the Pakistani Army and Taliban militants in a fight for control of the Swat district of Pakistan)

The filmmaker and his team took close to four years to research and finish the scripting of the film. However, in the due course of scripting, they could not connect with Malala Yousafzai. “This was the biggest challenge. As we could not connect with her, we had to work really hard on finding her life’s truth. But after completing the film, we showed it to her and her parents. They all think that the film is a true depiction of the tragedy she has braved.”

"The one thing that sticks with me after she saw the film was when she said 'I feel bad looking at it as it makes me recall the tragedy'" said Amjad on an ending note.

For the characters of Remo D'Souza's latest film 'Street Dancer 3D', the world is a stage. Divided into two groups representing the two warring nations- India and Pakistan- the two groups are at loggerheads and keep clashing on streets (of London), dance floors, restaurants and have dance-offs. A motley group of youngsters, they seem to all come from affluent families where nobody has to bother about jobs and earning a livelihood and pursue a passion of dancing and indulge in dance-offs to put down each other.

A part of D'Souza's ABCD franchise, 'Street Dancer 3D' too has a dance competition at its backdrop. Sehej( Varun Dhawan) wants to win the biggest dance battle- Ground Zero- for his elder brother who at one point of time was close to winning the coveted trophy but suffered an accident that left him with a limp. Now, Sehej and his group called the 'Street Dancer' want to win the prize for the big brother. They need practice and are aware that the rival gang - The Rule Breakers- a group of Pakistani youngsters led by Inayat (Shraddha Kapoor) are better than them.

The two gangs often clash in a restaurant that's managed by Anna (Prabhudeva) who himself feels that if the two groups work together, they can win the competition. Inayat's purpose of winning the competition is different from Sehej's though. She wants to use the prize money to help illegal immigrants of Indian and Pakistan go back home. Would she be able to convince Sehej to join her group for a greater good and be able to win the competition forms the rest of the story.

Now, on paper, the story seems to be well-intended- a tale of a group of talented dancers wanting to bring positive change to society through dance. Sure, why not! But when it comes to implementation, D'Souza films take a very different route where the main plot seems like a prop of a very elaborate, long dance program.

A film that's called 'Sreet Dancer' is bound to be about dance, no doubt. You know what you are getting into when you start watching the film. Like his previous films, D'Souza uses a lot of reality TV dancers as characters in the film- giving the choreographed sequences an authentic feel but after a point, the thrill of seeing of these dancers do multiple backflips, and some unimaginable limb movements- wears off making the dance routines appear repetitive.

Released on the Republic Day weekend- it also tries to pelt out patriotism through dance- pitting India and Pakistan against each other, using the Indian tricolour in the final dance-off and making everyone dance to desi tunes.

Acting and logic are not the high points of this film. A film on ultimate dance competition- the rules are fluid where anyone can join any group at any point in time. The competition runs on emotions and not logic.

Among the actors, Nora Fatehi and Aparshakti Khurrana who show some spark in a story that doesn't give anyone any scope for acting. But these two actors still manage to make their presence felt-which is commendable. Khurana, who is now almost the go-to person for all supporting characters in Hindi films- brings the right amount of vulnerability to his character. Fatehi plays Varun Dhawan's girlfriend and adds the much-needed oomph to the film and the dance sequences. An exceptionally good dancer, Fatehi gets a few lines and manages to impress in those scenes.

Varun Dhawan tries earnestly to perform in the film that resorts to dance sequences for everything but we've seen better films of the actor. He may be a good dancer but that alone cannot salvage this film. Shraddha Kapoor and Prabhudeva deliver what they have already done in previous films.

Should you be watching this film? Only if you need to learn a few complicated dance steps.

'Street Dancer 3D' review: The story acts as a prop in this very elaborate dance show

Meghna Gulzar's 'Raazi' may have earned critical and box office success when it released in 2018 but it went completely unnoticed during the National Film Awards that were announced in. Writer Harinder Sikka, on whose book, the film was based- feels that 'Raazi' did not win any award because the makers tampered with the original story.

"Meghna did a blunder with 'Raazi' which is why she did not get a National Award. In fact, I was backstabbed by them(Meghna Gulzar and Gulzar)," says Sikka as he spoke exclusively to WION recently.

Based on the author's bestseller 'Calling Sehmat', the film had Alia Bhatt playing Sehmat an undercover spy from India who marries into a Pakistani Army family in order to relay information to India, prior to the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

Sikka's book was based on a real-life Kashmiri woman who dedicated her life to India. But the author feels that while the book sends out this important message- the film's ending completely derails the message that he had intended to convey.

"Meghna made a blunder with that ending in 'Raazi'," Sikka said and added, "In the book- when Sehmat comes back to India- she goes in front of the tricolour and salutes and thanks to the motherland for having her back."

"The film should have also had a similar ending. Instead, Meghna made her comeback as a depressed woman. It seemed that a Kashmiri woman had done a blunder of sorts," the author added.

Sikka feels that had the ending been according to the book- 'Raazi' would have definitely won National awards. "I had told people soon after watching the film that it will not win the National Awards. That's what happened eventually. With 'Calling Sehmat' I was sending a message that Kashmiris are not traitors. But in the film, you brought her back as a depressed person. That was a negative ending."

Sikka states that he had promised Gulzar to let his daughter direct the film. His only condition was that Alia Bhatt should play the lead role. "I appointed Meghna for the film and signed the dotted line only when they agreed to my conditions. The screenplay was to be cleared by me. I took an active part but at the same time trusted Meghna as she had done a lot of research around the book and impressed me with her talk."

The author says eventually when the film was completed, he was not invited for a preview screening. "The makers brought the film prior to the release. Showed it in Imperial Hotel, Delhi to senior army officers. This was 2 months before the release of the film- but I was not invited. I learnt much later. Had I been invited I would not have let this happen. I watched it after the film got released. Meghna kept telling me that I will show it to you but it never happened. She knew that if I had watched, I would have raised objection about the ending."

The author, whose first produced film 'Nanak Shah Fakir' won three National Awards in 2016, feels that the ending of 'Raazi' completely went against its case in front of the National awards jury. "The last scene made all the difference in the mindset of the people," he added.

The writer, whose new book 'Vichhoda' is set in partition era, spent 8 years researching on 'Calling Sehmat' and felt cheated when the film did not end the way he had envisioned it. "A writer is like a mother to a story. You disown that mother- you ruin the child. That's what they did with 'Raazi'."

Sikka though adds that the film was a commercial success because the first 1 hour of the film was gripping and Alia Bhatt delivered a compelling performance. "She put the film together through her innocence through her eyes, through her looks. She was fantastic."

He alleges that the director did not speak to him post the film's release.

Did he express his concerns to Gulzar later, we asked. Instead of answering, the author asked "I am eager to know- who tried to delay the publishing of 'Calling Sehmat'? Who tried to stop my inclusion at the Jaipur Literature Festival?"

The writer states that what happened with him is a common practice in Bollywood where once the story rights are given to makers, writers seldom have a say in the screenplay. But he feels that the practise needs to end and for that questions need to be raised.

"No one questions them openly- Sehmat gave me 'Vichhoda', she means so much to me. If I don’t raise questions- this practice will continue in Bollywood."

His new book 'Vichhoda' which released in November 2019, will also get a screen adaptation soon. Learning from his past mistakes, Sikka states he will not trust anyone too blindly with 'Vichhoda's' screenplay and see to it that makers remain true to the original story. While the book has been receiving a positive response, the director is already onto his next few books. He has already submitted the final draft of one book, and is on the verge of completing 'Remembering Sehmat' - a sequel to 'Calling Sehmat'.

An ex-Navy officer, Sikka has served as a journalist during the Kargil war and is now a communication director of a leading corporate conglomerate. He writes to spread the message of peace, he says. "I took 20 lakhs less when I sold the rights of 'Calling Sehmat' to Junglee Pictures. I gave all the money to charitable organisations. I don't write for the money- which is why it hurt more when they fiddled with such a powerful story."

Actor Vikram Gokhale criticised Sonia Gandhi and Rahul on their stand on freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and said that Congress leaders who are not aware of Savarkar should not make any comment.

While targeting at Sonia Gandhi, he stated, "I just don't care for her. What she knows about Savarkar? What has she read about Savarkar? She doesn't have any right to make any comment about him..."

Gokhale also said, " What Rahul Gandhi knows about Savarkar?" Expressing his views on Veer Savarkar, Gokhale said, "I am a Savarkar devotee, and an ardent fan of his poems and people who don`t know what Savarkar is, they have no right to make any comment about him."

He further said, "Savarkar was not God, he was a human being. Why do you expect Savarkar, Gandhi to be God, why? They were also human beings they can also make mistakes."

While elaborating about Savarkar's Hindutva policy, he said, "Why do not Brahmins want a reservation for every caste? We do not want whatever we can achieve on the basis of whatever little wisdom we have, even if we will be begging for life, but we do not want a reservation."

This comes in the backdrop of Savarkar's grandson Ranjit Savarkar's disappointment over the distribution of a booklet titled 'Veer Savarkar Kitne Veer?' during 10-day camp of Congress Seva Dal.

The booklet gave a reference citing page 423 the 'Freedom at Midnight' book written by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre, which states that Godse had a homosexual relationship with his "political guru" Savarkar before the former turned celibate.

The booklet also claimed that Savarkar encouraged his followers to rape women from minorities and pelted stones at mosques when he was 12-years-old.
