<p>According to a report published by PTI on Friday, July 7 BCCI in a board meeting discussed on the possibility of using a second-string squad for the Asian Games and the members agreed. The decision could open the doors for second-string Indian stars like Rinku Singh, Mukesh Sharma, and others to make their debut for the national side in the coming future. The BCCI would also avoid sending players who will be on the standby list or will be reserved for net practice.</p>

<p>"Through effective planning, communication, and coordination, the BCCI aims to navigate those challenges successfully and contribute to the national cause by fielding a team in both men's and women's category in line with the Government of India's directions," a board member is reported to have said to PTI.</p>

<h2><strong>When was Cricket last held at Asian Games?</strong></h2>

<p>Cricket was played at the Asian Games in 2014 in Incheon, South Korea when Sri Lanka beat Afghanistan in the Gold Medal match by 68 runs. This will be the third time that the Asian Games will have cricket as part of the itinerary, having debuted in the Guangzhou Games in 2010. On both occasions, Afghanistan were runners-up with Bangladesh winning the first-ever gold medal of the Asian Games.</p>

<p>Dubbed by many as the greatest Indian captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, fondly known as MS Dhoni, turned 42 on Friday, July 7. The beloved 'Thala' lately tasted success in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with his Chennai Super Kings team winning the title for the fifth time equaling Mumbai Indians.</p>

<p>His teammates, best friends and even colleagues took to social media to send birthday greetings to the legend.&nbsp;</p>

<p>From Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja to some of the young guns, Dhoni received ample love and best wishes from all quarters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To date, the only captain to win all white-ball ICC trophies, including the T20 World Cup (2007), 50-over World Cup (2011) and the Champions Trophy (2013), Dhoni is regarded among the game's finest strategists and perhaps one of the best wicketkeepers of all time.</p>

<p>From being the ultimate finisher that he was, having won a plethora of games on his own for both India and his IPL franchises, CSK and Rising Pune Supergiant, Dhoni's ability to produce a stumping in a fraction of seconds gave him the name of 'the quickest man in the east'.</p>

<p>Other than winning three ICC titles as Indian captain, Dhoni also clinched two Asia Cup trophies (2010, 2016) and was also the first Indian captain to win the ODI series in Australia (2008).&nbsp;</p>

Indian cricket legends send birthday greetings to MS Dhoni as Thala turns 42

<p>On Tuesday (July 4), former India pacer Ajit Agarkar was announced as the new BCCI chief selector. Agarkar succeeds&nbsp;Chetan Sharma after the latter resigned as a result of his revelations in a TV sting operation. Agarkar, who has represented India in 26 Tests, 191 ODIs and four T20Is, was unanimously recommended by BCCI's Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising Sulakshana Naik, Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape, for the top position. After his appointment, former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh congratulated him and feels Agarkar is the right man for the job.</p>

<p>In a statement shared by the BCCI, Jay Shah -- the board's Secretary -- said, "The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), consisting of Ms Sulakshana Naik, Mr Ashok Malhotra, and Mr Jatin Paranjape, interviewed applicants for the position of one selector in the Men's Selection Committee. <p>In Richa Ghosh’s absence - who made headlines for her stellar performances with the bat during the Women’s T20 World Cup, scoring 136 in five matches at 68.00, Assam’s Uma Chetry got the nod. The 20-year-old youngster is second to Yastika Bhatia in both T20Is and ODIs and was part of the India-A side, which won the ACC Emerging Nations tournament in Hong Kong.</p>

<h2>BCCI to appoint new head coach for Women’s Team</h2>

<p>The BCCI is yet to finalise the new head coach of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team, with former domestic great Amol Muzumdar, ex-team coach Tushar Arothe and former Durham batter Jon Lewis among the frontrunners.</p>

<p>Following the removal of ex-India cricketer Ramesh Powar as the team’s head coach for the second time late last year, Hrishikesh Kanitkar was appointed the interim coach for the 2023 T20 World Cup.</p>

<p>Earlier at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in May, all the players picked for this tour were part of the fitness-intensive conditioning camp. Interim coach Kanitkar was also present.</p>

<p>It is to note that this is the women's team's first series since the T20 World Cup, where they lost to Australia in the semis. It marks the beginning of a busy calendar for them, with New Zealand, England, and Australia set to tour over the next six months. Besides, England and Australia will play Tests in a multi-format tour.</p>

Several big absentees as BCCI announces Indian women's limited-over squads for Bangladesh series

<p>Pakistan's participation in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023 is still under the cloud. When the ICC, after much delay, announced the official schedule on June 27, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had said that their participation depends on government clearance. The Pakistani board, however, has written a letter to their government too seek the permission to play in India, reported ESPNCricinfo.</p>

<p>In a letter addressed to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the PCB asked for advice on the upcoming travel to India required for the ODI World Cup 2023.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Soon after the World Cup schedule was announced last Tuesday, we wrote to our Patron, Honourable Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, through the Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) Ministry, copying the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Interior, requesting clearance to participate in the World Cup," a PCB official told ESPNcricinfo.</p>

Pakistan will play their nine games at five venues: Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai Kolkata and Ahmedabad.&nbsp;If qualified for the semifinals, Pakistan will play in Kolkata on November 16 in Kolkata. India will play in Mumbai if qualified for semis unless they play against Pakistan, in which case they'll play in Kolkata, reported ICC at time of announcement of schedule.</p>

<p>Pakistan's tie against India - one of the marquee world cup matches - will be played in Ahmedabad on October 15.</p>

<p>"The decision to visit India and approve venues at which we can play our matches is the prerogative of the Government of Pakistan. We have absolute trust in the judgment of our government and will follow whatever is advised. It is entirely up to the Government of Pakistan the process it wants to formulate and follow before advising us on the next steps. If this requires sending an advance team to India to inspect the venues and hold meetings with the event organisers, then it will solely be the government's decision," the PCB official further stated.</p>

<p>The two countries are at loggerheads due to political tension between them. The BCCI recently had decided not to travel to Pakistan for the upcoming Asia Cup. The regional tournament, after BCCI's objection, will now be held in a hybrid model, with rest of the games after first four to be played in Sri Lanka. Pakistan had threatened to pull out of the ODI World Cup after India decided not to play in Pakistan for the upcoming Asia Cup.</p>

<p>In consultation with the foreign and interior ministries, the Pakistan government will decide when will the delegation travel to India. The decision around the same is expected following the appointment of the new Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman.</p>

<p>As per the official source, the delegation will represent the PCB and inspect the venues where Pakistan will play its matches, alongside checking the security arrangements made for the players and fans.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The security delegation will go with representation from the PCB to inspect the venues where Pakistan will play and also the security and other arrangements made for them in the World Cup," the official source said, as quoted by Times of India.</p>

<p>The security delegation will visit venues like the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Chepauk Stadium in Chennai, Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad and the mega Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where the marquee clash between India and Pakistan will take place on October 15.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The source added though the final schedule alongside the fixed venues is out, if PCB’s security delegation has any concerns and feels the designated match must take place at some other ground, it will mention that in its report to the ICC and BCCI.</p>

<p>"The PCB will share the report with the ICC and BCCI if the delegation has any concerns," the source added.</p>

<p>The source also maintained it is only after getting the final permit from the Pakistan Government will the team come and play the World Cup 2023 in India.</p>

<p>"This is not unusual, and it is standard procedure for all tours to India. Even in other sports, the respective national federations have to get clearance from the government to send their teams to India for any competition," the source added.</p>

<p>Talking to former Indian opener Aakash Chopra on his Youtube channel, Raman said, "The problem is that they have picked four possible openers, and they have dropped Pujara, which is another bone of contention. <p>"He deserves to be treated properly. In the event, if they think it's the end of Pujara, he could have been given a better exit, but that's how things happen sometimes, and this is not the first case again. There are a lot of precedences as far as this kind of treatment is concerned," Raman added.</p>

<p>Pujara, a veteran of 103 Tests, has 7,195&nbsp;runs in the red-ball format. The right-hander has not been at his best in the recently-concluded 2021-23 WTC cycle and his poor returns in the WTC final, where he managed 14 and 27, led to his ouster, with youngsters such as Ruturaj, Ishan Kishan, Jaiswal breathing down his neck.&nbsp;It will be interesting to see if Pujara manages to make a comeback to India's Test line-up.</p>

<p>While Arothe had coached the Indian Team previously, Muzumdar, who had a short stint with Rajasthan Royals in the coaching department lately, will also be present for the interview despite reports of him becoming Baroda’s head coach.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In December last year, former India spinner Ramesh Powar was removed as the women’s team coach for the second time, and since then Harmanpreet Kaur-led team has been without a permanent coach. Ex-Pakistan player slams PCB's ODI WC requests, confident of Men in Green's participation

<p>The decision-makers on the board acknowledge that these breaches didn’t go unnoticed. Meanwhile, it’s worth noting that outside of India’s premier T20 league, these four players represent North and West Zones in the domestic circuit.</p>

<p>"When I became aware of the situation, I was deeply upset and immediately reported the matter to the BCCI. The Integrity Officer also took the breach very seriously and fulfilled his obligations," the owner of the team shared with Cricbuzz.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The owner, however, further confirmed that appropriate measures were taken against these players at the franchise level.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the report also states the breaches involved disciplinary issues and curfew violations rather than corruption-related matters. Also, it is to be noted some of the players reported to the board are in contention for a place in India’s T20 squad for the West Indies series.</p>

<h2>India to begin new WTC cycle with WI series</h2>

<p>After losing the WTC Final for the second straight occasion, this time to Australia by 209 runs in England, the Rohit Sharma-led team will now travel to the Island nation for a ten-match series, including two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I'm all for ego. If you have an understanding of the situation then speak on the matter, by all means, but also learn to move on. There is no point in saying 'we will do this if that doesn't happen'. Try to judge whether you can back your claims and only then make those claims. We are all patriotic but at the end of the day, this is just a game," he added.</p>

<p>Talking about Pakistan's matches, the Men in Green start their campaign against a qualifying team on October 6 in Hyderabad. The team will also play their second match against another qualifying team on October 12 in Hyderabad as well. This position is consistent to what we had told the ICC a couple of weeks ago when they shared with us the draft schedule and sought our feedback,” PCB Communications Director Sami Ul Hasan told WION.</p>

<p>Pakistan, notably, had asked for venues to be changed for some of its matches including India. The ICC and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), however, had rejected the demand. The venues can be changed only because of the security concerns. The request by Pakistan had no sufficient grounds to change the venue, hence was declined.</p>

<p>Apart from its match against India, Pak had also asked for the change of venue against Bangladesh and Afghanistan. CWC'2023: PCB says participation depends on government clearance after ICC announces schedule

<p>On Friday (June 23), the BCCI selection committee named India's squads&nbsp;for their two-match Test series and three ODIs versus West Indies as the tour commences next month in the Caribbean. Rohit Sharma retained captaincy of the 16-man Test squad, despite criticism after India's WTC final loss, whereas Ajinkya Rahane regained the vice-captaincy post.</p>

<p>Rahane served as Virat Kohli's deputy in whites for a long time and even led the team with aplomb in his absence before losing the post in late 2021. Soon, he even lost his spot before making his comeback during the WTC finale versus Australia early this month, where he returned with a sublime 89 and 46. With injuries to Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah, Rahane once again got the vice-captaincy back and Little Master Sunil Gavaskar reacted to the same.</p>

<p>Gavaskar said there is 'nothing wrong' in Rahane regaining vice-captaincy but feels there was an opportunity lost to name a youngster as Rohit's deputy for the Windies tour. Talking to Sports Today, he said, "There is nothing wrong in having him [Ajinkya Rahane] as the vice-captain, but a missed opportunity to groom a young player. At least, tell a young player that we are looking at you as a future captain. So, he starts to think as a future leader."</p>

<p>Further, Gavaskar named three youngsters who can lead India in whites going forward. "One is Shubman Gill and the other is Axar Patel [as future captains] because Axar comes in leaps and bounds, he just gets better every match. Giving him the responsibility as vice-captain will make them think. So, these are the two candidates in my view. If there are others, somebody like Ishan Kishan, once he cements his place in the team. He can come in the reckoning as well," the veteran added.</p>

<p>Pujara has played 103 matches for India in whites and has scored 7,195 runs. He has scored those runs at an average of 43.60, with 19 hundreds and 35 fifties. Sunil Gavaskar, one of the former cricketers with whom the decision to drop Pujara didn't go well, said that Pujara has been the victim of other batters’ failures.</p>

<p>"Why has he been dropped? Why has he been made the scapegoat for our batting failures? He has been a loyal servant of Indian cricket. A loyal and quiet servant. A loyal and quiet achiever. But because he does not have millions of followers on platforms who will make a noise in case he gets dropped, you drop him. That is something beyond understanding. What is the criteria of dropping him and keeping the others who failed? I do not know because nowadays, there is no media interaction with the selection committee chairman," Gavaskar said.</p>

Following India’s second straight WTC Final defeat, this time against Australia by 209 runs, fans, alongside pundits, expected some drastic changes to happen, at least in the batting order. In the absence of injured Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant, domestic giant Sarfaraz was touted to get his maiden Test call-up for the West Indies series, but that did not happen. Instead, regulars got retained, with Ajinkya Rahane, who didn’t even get the central contract by BCCI, named the vice-captain.</p>

<p>Upset over the same, fans took to social media blasting Board's selection criteria and favouritism towards certain players. Two days after going public with the squad announcement for both Tests and ODIs, a BCCI official finally came out and revealed why despite piling up runs for successive seasons, the selectors overlooked Sarfaraz for the Test series.</p>

<p>"The angry reactions are understandable, but I can tell you with some degree of certainty that the reason behind Sarfaraz getting ignored time and again is not just a cricketing one. There are multiple reasons for which he hasn't been considered," a BCCI official privy to selection developments told PTI on conditions of anonymity.</p>

<p>Since the past three seasons, Sarfaraz scored 2566 runs from 37 games, averaging a whopping 79.65 – only second to great Sir Donald George Bradman. Despite being aware of his on-field credentials, the selectors kept ignoring him, and the unnamed BCCI official added the selection committee is not a fool to not consider someone with 900-plus runs in successive seasons.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added Sarfaraz’s absence from the Test squad has more to do with his fitness and off-field disciplinary issues than his unbelievable on-field records.</p>

<p>"Are the Selectors fools to not consider a player who has scored 900 plus runs in successive seasons? One of the reasons is his fitness which isn't exactly of international standard. "He has to work hard, maybe shed weight and comeback leaner and fitter as it's not just batting fitness that is the sole criteria for selection," the source said.</p>

<p>"His conduct on and off the field hasn't exactly been top-notch. Certain things said, certain gestures made, and some incidents have been taken note of. A bit more disciplined approach would only do him a world of good. Hopefully, Sarfaraz along with his father and coach Naushad Khan will work on those aspects," the senior official added.</p>

<h2>So, what exactly happened?</h2>

<p>Reportedly, Sarfaraz’s celebration after completing a hundred against Delhi earlier this year during the Ranji game didn’t impress the then-selection committee chairman Chetan Sharma, who was present inside the stadium. Moreover, during 2022 Ranji Trophy Final, his conduct during the break upset MP Coach and Mumbai veteran Chandrakant Pandit.</p>

<p>As also perceived by many pundits that Sarfaraz’s inability to tackle extra pace and his latest IPL 2023 records are one of the reasons why he is not getting picked for international cricket, the BCCI official, replying to this, said,</p>

<p>"When Mayank Agarwal broke into the Indian Test team, he scored 1000 first-class runs in one month. Did MSK Prasad's committee check his IPL credentials? Ditto for Hanuma Vihari, who came through domestic and A team ranks. If their IPL and white ball record wasn't checked then, why would SS Das's committee reinvent the wheel now? Simple. The reason is not a cricketing one," he added.</p>

<p>The official concluded by asking, "Just think about it. Why was Sarfaraz not even among the reserves for the World Test Championship? Suryakumar Yadav, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, were the two reserves after Ruturaj pulled out due to his marriage."</p>

<p>As things stand, Ruturaj is kept as Ajinkya Rahane’s backup till Shreyas Iyer returns from injury, while Yashasvi Jaiswal is looked upto as the future top-order batter in Tests.</p>

<p>Cheteshwar Pujara has once again hit the headlines just weeks after his off-show in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in Oval. The veteran Indian star was dropped from the Indian team contingent for the West Indies tour where Rohit Sharma’s men are scheduled to play two Test matches. Interestingly, in a shocking reveal made by a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source, Pujara’s fate was sealed with the Indian team was therefore dropped from the touring party to the Caribbean islands.</p>

<h2><strong>Big reveal by BCCI source</strong></h2>

<p>"Once he failed in Australia series at home, there was very little chance for him but selectors didn't want to change things ahead of WTC final," a BCCI source in know of things told PTI on conditions of anonymity.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Saurashtra&nbsp;batter scored an aggregate 41 runs in the WTC final but much to the surprise was axed from the team while another veteran star Ajinkya Rahane was promoted to the deputy spot for Rohit Sharma. Rahane missed out on a hundred in the first innings of the WTC final as he got out for 89 while he scored 46 in the second innings. As a result of that performance, Rahane retained his place in the Indian team while Pujara was dropped.</p>

<p>"Twin failures at Oval sealed his fate. SS Das was in London for WTC final. He must have had a word with head coach Rahul Dravid and intimated his panel's thought-process post final," the source added.</p>
