Ecuador were already trailing 2-0, with the defeat confirming their elimination from the tournament. Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic initially did not spot the incident. The regulation was approved during a special meeting of the International Football Association Board (Ifab) in Vancouver in April as part of efforts to improve player conduct and transparency on the field.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino had previously supported the introduction of the rule, saying referees should work from a ‘presumption’ that players have said 'something they shouldn't have'. The issue gained widespread attention earlier this year during a Champions League match between Benfica and Real Madrid. Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni covered his mouth with his shirt while speaking to Vinicius Jr.

The Argentine winger was initially accused of racist abuse, an allegation he denied, and received a provisional one-match suspension. Following a UEFA investigation, Prestianni was instead found guilty of homophobic conduct and handed a six-match suspension, with three matches suspended. Although FIFA's new regulation allows referees to dismiss players for covering their mouths during confrontational exchanges, the final decision remains at the referee's discretion after considering all the circumstances surrounding each incident.

Naomi Osaka made a memorable fashion statement on Wimbledon’s opening day with a white kimono-inspired outfit that honored both her Japanese heritage and pop culture.

Naomi Osaka ensures her name makes it into the history books, whether the chapter is tennis or fashion. On Wimbledon’s opening day, the tennis star left everyone stunned with her kimono-inspired look. Following Wimbledon’s all-white dress code, Osaka pulled off the unthinkable, and it deserves every bit of the attention and applause. On June 29, Osaka, the four-time Grand Slam champion, walked onto the court in a statement piece inspired by a traditional Japanese ceremonial dress. With it, she also paid tribute to her Japanese mother. But the look had another influence: pop culture. It was drawn from Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill, specifically Lucy Liu’s O-Ren Ishii and her iconic white kimono. "I was thinking about my favorite movies. I love Kill Bill, and then I remembered absolutely falling in love with Lucy Liu's character, and she has an all white kimono. I remember thinking that was really cool and amazing," she said, per Reuters.

Kylian Mbappe struck twice and Michael Olise delivered a man-of-the-match performance as France thrashed Sweden 3-0 in New Jersey on Tuesday (Jun 30) in FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 match. France will now play last-16 match against Paraguay, which shocked four-time winners Germany to advance. Mbappe broke the deadlock just before half-time, capping a slick move after France had already rattled the woodwork twice. Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola doubled the lead in the 53rd minute, teed up by an inspired Olise, before the France captain added his second late on to seal a comfortable win. American sixth seed Taylor Fritz, a Wimbledon semi-finalist last year, enjoyed a comfortable straight-sets victory over Dusan Lajovic. Fifth seed Alex de Minaur also advanced with ease after defeating Roman Andres Burruchaga in straight sets.

The U.S. Supreme Court upheld state bans on transgender athletes competing in girls' and women's sports, ruling the laws comply with the Constitution and Title IX

The US Supreme Court on Tuesday (June 30) delivered another significant setback for LGBTQ rights by upholding state laws that prohibit transgender athletes from competing in girls' and women's sports. In a 6-3 decision, the court ruled against two transgender students, Becky Pepper-Jackson and Lindsay Hecox, who challenged laws in West Virginia and Idaho that restrict participation based on biological sex assigned at birth. Justice Brett Kavanaugh, writing for the majority, concluded that the laws do not violate the 14th Amendment, which guarantees equal protection under the law, or Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits sex discrimination in education. “The Constitution and Title IX do not require an overhaul of women’s and girls’ sports throughout America,” Kavanaugh wrote. Why did the Supreme Court uphold the transgender sports bans? According to the majority opinion, the court determined that the state laws are consistent with constitutional protections and federal education law. The ruling found that neither the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment nor Title IX requires states to allow transgender athletes to compete in female sports categories.
England cricketers Kate Cross and Alex Hartley have revealed that they received abusive messages, including death threats, after questioning the ICC over the scheduling of the ongoing Women's T20 World Cup 2026 semi-finals. The controversy started after Cross questioned on social media why the tournament schedule appeared to be contingent on a particular team reaching the semi-finals. According to the ICC's playing conditions, the top-placed team from Group A will face the second-placed team from Group B in the first semi-final on June 30. The winners of Group B will then meet the second-placed team from Group A in the second semi-final on July 2.

However, the same playing conditions also said that if India qualified for the semi-finals, they would play in the first semi-final regardless of whether they finished first or second in Group A. The first semi-final is scheduled to begin at 2:30 PM local time (7 PM IST), while the second semi-final will start at 6:30 PM local time (11 PM IST). Cross described the arrangement as ‘ridiculous’. Speaking on the latest episode of No Balls: The Cricket Podcast, Hartley said the backlash quickly escalated. "We've been getting death threats and abuse online," Hartley said on the latest episode of No Balls: The Cricket Podcast, which she co-hosts with Cross.

Cross added, “I woke up this morning to post about the ICC scheduling for the semi-finals to 450 comments on that Instagram post. Normally, we will get 30 per post. There's been a little bit of confusion because what we said doesn't warrant death threats and abuse.”

Also Read: What happened to Cody Gakpo?
Hartley later said she contacted an ICC official to seek clarification regarding the scheduling. "I've actually spoked to somebody at the ICC to clarify everything that has been said. This is what the ICC said, 'We'd like to clarify that this has nothing to do with India and that this has been done to optimise spectatorship in the UK as much as the global viewing.' So, my interpretation of that is that the 6:30 start is for the UK audience," Hartley said.

Cross stressed that their remarks had been misinterpreted on social media and were never intended as criticism of the Indian women's cricket team. "It feels like we've cleared that up. Thanks everyone that has got in touch and supported us. That's been lovely reading all those (messages). It's mad, isn't it? We spoke about social media so much on this platform but let's just be a bit kinder. Like I wasn't slagging off India as a cricket team," Cross said.

She further added, "I was just saying 'I don't think that any tournament should be based on a cricket team getting through a semi-final'. Turns out that wasn't right anyway. To the person that quote us, if you are going to quote us, quote what we say don't quote what you think we've said. The people have opened up to their interpretation," she added.

Kate Cross and Alex Hartley reveal they received death threats after questioning the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final schedule. ICC clarifies scheduling was based on global viewership, not India

There's been a little bit of confusion because what we said doesn't warrant death threats and abuse.” Also Read: What happened to Cody Gakpo? FIFA 2026: 'Sorry for not meeting your expectations': Japan's Daizen apologises to fans after World Cup R32 defeat

The FIFA World Cup often delivers unforgettable sporting moments, but sometimes the emotions on display have little to do with the result on the pitch. That was evident when Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo broke down in tears after opening the scoring against Morocco in their Round of 32 clash on Monday. Rather than celebrating with his trademark joy, Gakpo collapsed to the turf in visible anguish. His emotional reaction came just days after he and his partner, Noa van der Bij, suffered the devastating loss of their unborn baby boy during pregnancy.

The deeply moving moment resonated throughout the stadium. Dutch players immediately rushed to embrace Gakpo, offering comfort instead of exuberant celebration. It was a reminder that even on football's biggest stage, personal grief can overshadow sporting achievement. Ahead of the match, Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk acknowledged the tragedy while speaking to reporters. "It’s awful news, and it shows that football is secondary. There are more important things in life."

Although Gakpo had given the Netherlands the lead, Morocco fought back to level the contest before eventually winning on penalties. The Dutch players were left devastated by the defeat, but those emotions paled beside the sorrow that Gakpo had been carrying long before kickoff. Television cameras later captured another emotional scene as Gakpo's parents were seen in the stands wiping away tears following their son's goal.

Also Read: WATCH | Mexican fans create chaos outside Ecuador hotel before FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash as viral videos spark debate

Earlier, Noa van der Bij had shared the heartbreaking news on social media alongside a photograph of the couple holding hands over a baby blanket and a knitted hat. “With broken hearts, we share the devastating news that our baby boy passed away during pregnancy,” she wrote. "Thank you for your love and support. Elijah Raphael Gakpo. Forever loved. Forever our son."

In another post, she shared a photograph of a candle beside a cross and wrote, “We went to church to light a candle. Afterward, we walked to the church playground with our son Samuel.” Gakpo also released a brief statement asking for privacy during the difficult period. “This is an incredibly difficult time for our family.” "We kindly ask for our privacy and space. Thank you for your understanding."

His goal will be remembered not simply because it came on football's grandest stage, but because it reflected the immense courage required to perform while coping with profound personal loss. It served as a powerful reminder that behind every elite athlete is a human being facing battles that often remain unseen.
