Shreyas Iyer loves playing at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, having scored 335 T20 runs at a strike rate of 200.59, including two hundreds, one of which came on Tuesday night against the West Indies in the first T20I. Three days after helping the men’s team defend its Asian Games gold medal against arch-rivals Pakistan in Japan, an exhausted Iyer took on the West Indian attack to score his maiden hundred in this format. Indian white-ball captains Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer continue to make headlines following the updated ICC rankings. While Gill consolidates his position as the best ODI batter following his second double hundred (223*) against the West Indies during the Guwahati One-Dayer, Iyer has jumped 18 places to break into the top-10 T20I batters list for the first time in his career.
Controversies and low points of Agarkar’s tenure
India’s ODI cricket peaked during the home World Cup in 2023, only for Australia to beat India in the final and break a billion hearts. Mohammed Shami, who starred for the Men in Blue in that tournament, picking up 23 wickets in seven matches, was amongst the top names who were phased out of white-ball squads following the Champions Trophy success. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who returned to the Indian squad for the forthcoming New Zealand T20Is after nearly four years with Ojha leading the selection panel, also never got his turn during Agarkar’s spell as the chief selector. Besides, uncertainty over the futures of two stalwarts, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, and reports of Rohit quitting ODI cricket following the Lord’s ODI in July this year, turned things from bad to worse between the board, selection committee, the two players and the team management, leading to Agarkar’s exit. Moreover, several clean sweeps, including India's shocking 2-0 T20I series loss in Ireland and a 4-0 bashing at the hands of England on the previous UK tour, did not help the cause.

Gautam Gambhir penned a heartfelt note for outgoing chief selector Ajit Agarkar, praising his 'team first' mentality following his decision to step down as BCCI selection committee chairman.

FIFA World Cup 2026, held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico earlier this year, faced criticism for multiple reasons including accommodation in host cities, scheduling, ticket prices, and more. During the tournament, one of the major controversies which erupted was allowing US player Folarin Balogun to play in the match against Belgium in the Round of 16 despite getting a red card in the previous match against Bosnia. Mandhana’s first assignment as a full-time captain is the limited-over series against Zimbabwe, starting with three T20Is on October 16. Speaking on this opportunity to lead across formats, the left-handed opener was quoted as saying by the BCCI, "I would also like to acknowledge Harmanpreet and the contribution she has made as captain over the years. She has led the team with great commitment and has been an important part of our journey. Australia suffered a blow to their preparations for the Test series against South Africa after losing key all-rounder Cameron Green for the series opener in Durban starting Friday (Oct 9). Green suffered an abdominal strain while batting during the third ODI in Potchefstroom. Even if Green recovers at some point in the series, he will only play as a batter. During the third and final ODI, Corbin Bosch hit Green in the stomach, after which the lanky all-rounder smashed him for a six before being dismissed on the next ball. Despite the blow, there is optimism within the Australian medical camp, which expects Green to feature in the second and third Tests in Gqeberha or Cape Town, respectively. "He's (Green) progressing pretty well, all things considered," Australia head coach Andrew McDonald said ahead of the team's first full training session at Kingsmead, venue for the first Test. "He's still here for a reason, so there is some light at the end of the tunnel. It'll just be a matter of going through the rehab. "He's got a pretty demanding week this week as he reintroduces a few activities, and you'll see that probably play out in the net situation [and] during lunchtime, in and around the game. It's a bit of an unknown, but there's still optimism that he will take part in the series at some point,” he said. Also read| SA vs AUS 2026: South Africa to take call on Rabada’s availability for first Test ‘as late as possible’ Speaking on Green’s bowling chances during the series, McDonald said, “That's highly unlikely. But, I mean, what a great story. He's come back in, he's had a full pre-season, he's looking fit and strong [and he] peels off 100 in the first [one-day] game. Anyone that's been on the radar or there or thereabouts, they don't sort of drop off automatically,” McDonald said Moreover, McDonald also confirmed that Travis Head is ‘likely’ to continue in his role as the Test opener, with Matt Renshaw set to be his partner. India is among seven countries that want to host the 2036 Summer Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed in a public statement on Tuesday (Oct. 6). South Africa will not rush ace seamer Kagiso Rabada’s return to the Test side. India will take on the West Indies in the first of five T20Is on Tuesday (Oct. 6) and the thing to watch will be the bowlers. India have rested ace bowler Jasprit Bumrah for the series and named Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav in the squad. Bumrah was recently part of the Asian Games 2026, in which India won gold, and is expected to play in the upcoming New Zealand tour next. India bowling coach Morne Morkel, meanwhile, is excited to see how Mayank and Prince - who made their name with pace in the Indian Premier League (IPL) - take on this opportunity.
Morkel wants bowlers like Prince, Mayank in India team
India are three-time T20 World Cup champions with the last two trophies coming back-to-back in 2024 and 2026. The next T20 World Cup is in 2028 and so is the LA Olympics, which will see cricket for the first time. Morkel, keeping those two trophies in sight, wants Mayank and Prince to learn the trade. Also Read - No guarantee for Sooryavanshi in West Indies T20Is but Morkel backs youngster"They are both young and are still learning their trade," Morkel said while talking to reporters in Lucknow on the eve of the first T20I. The pacer, however, has been plagued by injuries so far but has returned in better fitness, as was evident in the June T20Is against Zimbabwe earlier this year. He has even developed a slower ball, which was on show in IPL 2026 when he foxed Rohit Sharma.Prince, on the other hand, rose to fame with his ability to swing the ball both ways. He can also surprise batters with a short ball and a laser-guided yorker. His nip-backer to dismiss Virat Kohli in IPL 2026 also established his wicket-taking capabilities.

Michael Olise starred as France stormed back from behind to thrash Belgium 4-1 in the UEFA Nations League on Monday, while Italy continued their resurgence with victory over Turkey. Dodi Lukebakio's first-half strike had Belgium on track for a first competitive victory over France since 1981, but Zinedine Zidane turned to his star-studded bench and the hosts produced a devastating late surge. Les Bleus struck four times in the final 13 minutes to keep Zidane's unbeaten record as coach intact as France edged closer to a place in the quarter-finals. Olise put the game to bed with a scruffy third goal before he grabbed another in stoppage time to round off a breathtaking turnaround. "I think we played well at the end. The first half was difficult.. but we kept going and we're happy," Olise told TF1. The Bayern Munich winger has been France's most influential player in the early stages of Zidane's reign, netting four times in his last three matches despite starting only once. "It's a team effort. He (Zidane) brings his own ideas and we follow him. We've done well in these four games and we'll keep going," said Olise. France hold a three-point lead over Italy in Group A1, with Belgium another point behind. Zidane's team will complete their group campaign with games away to Italy and at home to Turkey next month. Italy, who are rebuilding under Roberto Mancini, moved up into second place courtesy of a 3-1 win over Turkey in Bologna. Gianluca Scamacca drilled Italy ahead only for Aral Simsir to level just after the hour. The Azzurri, who thrashed Turkey 4-1 last week in Bursa, secured another win at home with goals from Riccardo Calafiori and Pio Esposito. "There was fatigue all around, and we struggled a bit. But we did well to score, and then to score again right after they equalised," said Mancini. The 61-year-old, who led Italy to Euro 2020 glory, is back for a second spell in charge of a nation who have failed to qualify for the last three World Cups. "We have to keep playing. We're currently in second place, and we'll likely have to fight to secure that spot in Belgium," added Mancini. Northern Ireland remain top of Group B2 but had to settle for a 0-0 draw against Georgia after Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili saved a late Isaac Price penalty in Belfast. Hungary are a point adrift following a 2-1 win over Ukraine in a match played in Slovakia. Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres scored for the seventh Nations League game in a row to give Sweden a 1-0 win in Romania. Graham Potter's side sit two points clear in Group B4 of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who beat Poland 1-0.
