Magnus Carlsen was left embarrassed at SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz Croatia 2025 in the Grand Chess Tour after losing to reigning world champion and Indian chess star D. Gukesh. Carlsen, who had an infamous incident with Gukesh recently at Norway Chess, had questioned the world champion's abilities in rapid and blitz format and had said in a chat with organisers: “Gukesh hasn’t done anything to indicate that he’s going to do well in such a tournament.” Carlsen's statement, however, proven wrong as Gukesh beat Carlsen in round 6 of the rapid format and now leads the points table with 10 points from five wins in a row. Also Read - Wimbledon 2025: Djokovic surpasses Federer, just one step away from century of wins
What Carlsen said after losing to Gukesh?
Carlsen was more humble in his opinion of Gukesh after the loss on July 3 and said in an interview with Take Take Take: “No, I've played kind of poorly the whole tournament and this time I got soundly punished. Thomas Rohler is no stranger to pain. The German javelin thrower, who won gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics, has spent years chasing, achieving, and recovering from the sport’s most elusive number — 90 metres. Now in Bengaluru to take part in the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025, Rohler brings with him not just medals and technique, but a grounded, honest perspective about what it really takes to hit that mark — and why the world often misunderstands it. Rohler reflected on the toll a 90m throw takes on the body and the mind. "Any 90m throw has a huge impact on the body," he said while talking to WION. “Once you throw 90m, the next thing you’re going to do is rest. Because the impact is high.” It’s not a dramatic exaggeration." Rohler explains that the force exerted during the final block phase of the throw is equivalent to having the weight of a small car—roughly a ton—on the block foot. “People need to understand… this is not yoga,” he said with a mix of sarcasm and seriousness. “It’s really tough.” It’s an apt description of a sport that often looks graceful but is, at its core, a controlled act of violence. The thrower must sprint with speed, position their leg with precision, and unleash energy through their body in a split second—all while avoiding injury. Rohler, like many in the sport, has battled injuries and setbacks throughout his career. But the physical toll is only one part of the equation. What happens after a 90m throw, he suggests, is just as taxing. “Doing it again and again is a mental challenge,” he explained. “It’s about dealing with the pressure from the outside.” Once an athlete breaks the 90m barrier, expectations grow. The 33-year-old, with a smile, admits even he fell into that trap. “I also did it very often. We all mess up with the expectations.” The German further went on to talk how perceptions have shifted in recent years. “We need to look back to 2012 London Olympics. You won the Olympic Games with a 84m throw” Rohler recalled. “Now people expect you to throw 90m. If you don’t do it, people ask, ‘Was it a bad day?’” His frustration isn’t with ambition, but with unrealistic expectations—especially from those who may not understand just how rare and magical a 90m throw is. And rare it is. In the long history of the sport, only a small handful of men have ever thrown beyond 90m. Rohler compares it to the very top tier of cricketers. “If you look at a cricket team, all these top players… if we talk about the top-top-top players, it’s the same like comparing to 90m of javelin,” he said. “It’s still magical.” For the German, that magic is what the sport needs to hold on to. The number itself shouldn’t become routine or expected. “There’s only a few moments in life you get the chance to achieve it as an athlete,” he said. “But also to see it as a spectator.” As the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 is set to take place in Bengaluru on July 5, Thomas Rohler's presence is a reminder that even in a sport driven by distance, wisdom still carries the farthest. And if he’s teaching anything this week, it’s that chasing greatness is never effortless, and never should be taken for granted.

As Bengaluru gears up for the much-awaited Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025, 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist javelin thrower Julius Yego in an exclusive chat with WION offered candid insights into the grueling demands of the sport, the evolving competition, and what makes India’s Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra special. When asked about breaching the elusive 90m mark, Yego didn’t romanticise it.He said, “You can never prepare yourself to throw over 90m. It just comes by itself,” he said. “And when it comes, the most difficult part is to maintain it," he added. He recalled how his first 90m throw in 2015 during the 15th IAAF World Championships, National Stadium, Beijing, left his body in shock. “I was struggling to throw even 80m afterwards. Luckily, if you’re not injured, it can come back. But it takes a lot out of the body — physically and in ways you don’t even understand.” Yego pointed to rare examples of consistency, citing Czech Republic's Jan Zelezny and Germany's Johannes Vetter. “Even Vetter has struggled. It shows how tough it is on the body. You’re lucky if you stay injury-free.” With Neeraj Chopra recently joining the elite 90m club, Yego believes global javelin has entered a new phase. “Earlier, it was mostly Eastern Europe. Now it’s India, Africa, the Caribbean, everywhere,” he said. “I believe to win a World Championship or Olympic gold now, you’ll have to throw over 90m. The level has really grown.” On what makes two-time Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra really special, Yego was full of praise. He said, “His flexibility and speed are his biggest assets. If he keeps those strong, he’ll do well for a long time. He’s a super-talented athlete. You just have to accept that.” As for what makes a 90m throw possible — technique or power — Yego was quick to clarify. He replied, “It’s everything. Technique plays a bigger role, but it has to be combined with power, speed, and a very strong mental state. You can’t plan a 90m throw. You get on the runway with good technique — the distance comes on its own.”

Pakistani squash player Mehwish Ali is in the news for making an obscene gesture to her opponent upon losing a game, the video of which has gone viral on social media. Facing Hong Kong’s Chung Y L in the Asian Junior Squash Tournament, the Pakistani athlete showed her the middle finger just after conceding a loss in the Round of 16 match in the Under-17 category. Although the game’s result is what should have been highlighted or talked about, Mehwish’s uncalled-for gesture is what broke the internet instead. However, social media was quick to react to Mehwish’s non-sporting spirit, tearing her for the obscene gesture she made, bringing shame to her and Pakistan on the global stage.
India-Pakistan sporting relations under scanner
The India-Pakistan relationship across all fronts, including diplomatic and sporting ties, has become sour since the Pahalgam terror attack episode late in April this year. Although India retaliated with ‘Operation Sindoor’, targeting specific terror-based and military camps across Pakistan, which also led to a war-like situation between both countries, the Indian government took necessary steps to cut all ties with its neighbouring country. On the contrary, several reports have suggested that they have allowed Pakistan to participate in the Hockey Asia Cup in India, with their counterpart claiming that any decision to travel across the border will depend on directives issued by the Pakistan government. Meanwhile, on the cricketing front, several former Indian captains and analysts suggested that India should not play against Pakistan unless the situation and relationship improve. However, the reports of India and Pakistan facing off in the men’s Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to begin in early September, made headlines lately.

Sour diplomatic relations seem to have taken a toll on cricket as Team India’s scheduled tour of Bangladesh (Aug 17-31), consisting of three ODIs and as many T20Is, is now off the table. The latest reports suggest that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has called off the home series against India for now, but has not ruled it out entirely, keeping a possible window open for it in future. The second Test between India and England at Edgbaston has been a solid one-sided affair thus far, thanks to the Indian captain Shubman Gill and ace all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Sinner's biggest struggle came in the final game as he had to wait until his sixth match point to serve it out and saved a break point with a sensational cross-court forehand winner. "I enjoyed it because I won the game! If not, I don't know," said Sinner after an unusual show of flamboyance as he whipped up the crowd's adulation on saving the break point. "The match can change very, very quickly. If he breaks me there, it can go a long distance. "I was lucky with that shot, so thank you to my racquet, which somehow made it to put the ball in the court. I'm very happy to win in straight sets." Polish eighth seed Swiatek was in danger of becoming the latest star to crash out of the grass-court Grand Slam after losing the first set on Centre Court. Five of the top 10 seeds have already been eliminated from the women's singles draw. But the 24-year-old dug deep to win the final two sets as she moved into the third round. Despite being a former junior champion at Wimbledon, Swiatek has struggled on grass in her professional career, with none of her 22 WTA titles coming on the surface. The former world number one, who has won the French Open on clay four times, has never been past the quarter-finals in five previous visits to the All England Club. Swiatek said she "showed there is hope" for her on grass after reaching the Bad Homburg Open final in the build-up to Wimbledon. Beaten in the Australian and French Open semi-finals this year, Swiatek can still dream of making it to the Wimbledon final for the first time. He was eventually ninth out by the run out route, coming back for a non-existent second run in one of his few errors of judgement in the course of his innings. “It was pretty simple really: keeping the straight balls out and trying to score when it was a bit wider or too straight," said Webster in talking about his innings after the day’s play. “The wicket offered a little bit again so it was a really good effort to get the total we did.” 'Good bowling attack' Webster was full of praise for wicketkeeper-batsman Carey for the manner in which he took on the West Indies bowlers. After an indifferent first Test, Joseph was the one to make the early strikes with two wickets, including the returning Steve Smith, while Phillip snared the other as the tourists lost three wickets for three runs midway through the morning session. Following an opening stand of 47, Usman Khawaja was trapped leg-before by Joseph and Sam Konstas drove at Phillip, playing his first Test for 18 months, to offer wicketkeeper Shai Hope a straightforward catch. Smith, who missed the first Test while recovering from the finger injury sustained in the World Test Championship Final against South Africa at Lord’s three weeks earlier, promptly miscued a pull at Joseph to be held by Phillip inches away from the long-leg boundary. Travis Head then joined Cameron Green at 50 for three and the pair took Australia almost to the lunch interval when Green, badly missed by John Campbell at cover, fell two balls later for 26 to Seales via a catch at gully by West Indies captain Roston Chase. Head’s demise shortly after lunch brought in Carey to partner Webster and, not for the first time in this brief series, it proved to be the turning point of the day. But the seven-time Wimbledon winner is adamant his celebration at the grass-court Grand Slam is simply a bonding moment with his young children. "As I mentioned to the Serbian journalists, it's something between me and my children. We have a song, it's called 'Pump It Up'," he told reporters when asked if it was a political gesture. "I don't know how many of you guys know that. It's quite an old song. Good rhythm. "So yeah, we're pumping. We love pumping. We pump after every win. I don't know the name of the artist." Bursting into song, Djokovic added: "Don't you know, pump it up, you got to pump it up". Disco song!" The 24-time Grand Slam champion's pumping gesture, which he also used after his first-round victory over Alexandre Muller, has been controversial in Serbia.

Diogo Jota's death has left the football world shocked and devastated. The 28-year-old and his brother André, also a professional footballer, both died in the early hours of Thursday after their vehicle veered off a motorway in northern Spain before bursting into flames. Jota wasn’t just talented — he was reliable. He always stepped up for club and country when it mattered most. On his day, he was one of the sharpest finishers of his generation. But Jota’s journey to the top was anything but easy.
The Unconventional Rise
Unlike many of his Portuguese teammates, Jota wasn’t a product of the famed academies of Benfica, Sporting, or Porto. He began his career with lower-division side Paços de Ferreira. In 2016, he earned a move to Spanish giants Atlético Madrid — but never played a competitive game for them. Instead, he was loaned to FC Porto, and then to Wolverhampton Wanderers in England. That move changed everything. Also Read - ‘We will all miss you,’ Cristiano Ronaldo pays heartbreaking tribute to Diogo Jota after tragic death Jota lit up the Championship with Wolves, earning a permanent transfer in 2018. Bengaluru has always known how to wear a mood — monsoon mornings draped in mist, tech-humming afternoons wrapped in haste, and cricket nights lit with noise and neon. But on Thursday (July 3), the city felt quieter, more focused. Almost reverent. As if it knows that history is inching closer — not on a cricket pitch, but in the Kanteerava stadium. As one makes way towards the stadium, they can see giant posters of Neeraj Chopra lined the route, his golden arm mid-flight on every hoarding, reminding you why Saturday (July 5) matters. Outside the venue, the hum of anticipation was hard to miss. But it was what one sees inside that really sets the tone. A group of young kids — barely teenagers — were practicing their throws with makeshift javelins, mimicking their idol’s technique with wide-eyed intensity. No coaches giving them orders. Just pure passion. Just Neeraj-inspired dreams in motion. The Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025, organised by JSW, is still two days away, but the anticipation is already woven into Bengaluru's rhythm. Inside the stadium, time seemed to move differently. The usual chaos of a city afternoon gave way to a focused hush, as if the wind itself was watching. The sky had turned a mild grey, with clouds gathering like quiet spectators above, and a soft breeze kept sweeping through the Kanteerava, lifting dust and dreams alike. On the field, finest athletes were putting in the final touches to their preparations — not just for another meet, but for the kind of event that could shape memories, inspire futures, and maybe even rewrite records. At the center of it all was Neeraj Chopra — two-time Olympic champion, world champion, and the man who has redefined what it means to be a field athlete in India. Clad in his training gear, his golden arm flexed and focused, Neeraj moved with an ease that only years of pressure and performance can carve. There was no fanfare, no dramatic music. Just the sound of spikes gripping track, breath being held before a throw, and the clean slicing of javelin through wind. Every now and then, he’d pause, hands on hips, eyes on the horizon. Measuring not just the distance of his next throw, but perhaps the weight of the expectations he now carries. Yet he looked unbothered, even serene. This was his zone. His stage. And though Saturday will bring the crowd, the noise, the flashbulbs, this quiet Thursday afternoon felt just as significant. It felt sacred. In the stands, a few dozen people had gathered — lovers of sport. And children. Lots of them. Small kids with school bags still slung over shoulders. Some in sports uniforms, others in casuals. All of them wearing that wide-eyed look of wonder that only live sport can ignite. They weren’t being noisy or asking for selfies. They sat in scattered clusters, watching intently as the athletes went through their drills. This was more than just training. Neeraj didn’t have to say a word. His focus, his craft, his very being in that space — it was enough to light something in these kids that may stay with them long. The Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 is scheduled for July 5, but the city’s heart has already begun to beat in sync with it. You can feel it in the air, in the hushed reverence of the stadium, in the unspoken promise hanging in the breeze — that something remarkable is coming. Something worth pausing for. Something worth remembering.

Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025: Bengaluru gears up as javelin stars assemble
