Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu failed to reprise her Tokyo 2021 performance and finished fourth in the 49kg weightlifting on Wednesday (Aug 7) at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. She lifted a total weight of 199 kg (88 in snatch and 111 kg in clean and jerk).
Chanu had won a silver medal at the Tokyo 2021 games and became the first Indian weightlifter to do so. Before her, Karnam Malleshwari had won a bronze medal in Sydney 2000 games.
The Indian weightlifter made a great start in the competition, lifting 85 kg in snatch event. In her second attempt, however, she failed to lift 88 kg. In the third attempt though, Chanu successfully lifted 88 kg - making it her best attempt. Have a look below:

During the clean and jerk, Chanu failed to lift 111kg in her first attempt but corrected it instantly in her second attempt. She, however, failed in her last attempt of 114 kg.
Among other participations (snatch event), only Thailand's Surodchana Khambao matched Chanuwhile China'sZhihui Hou managed a best of 89 kg. The winner of snatch round was Romania's Mihaela Cambei.

China's Hou Zhihuineeded the clean and jerk record of 117kg with her final lift to overtake Romanian Mihaela Valentina Cambei and win by one kilogramme.
Over the two rounds Hou, who stands 1.46 metres (4-foot-10), hoisted 206kg. Surodchana Khambao of Thailand took bronze with a total of 200 kg - one more than Mirbai Chanu.
