West Indies’ legendary batter Brain Lara celebrated the 20th anniversary of his historic 400-run knock against England on Friday (April 12). Lara, who broke the then-record of Australian Matthew Hayden against England in the 2004 Test match scored an unbeaten 400 at St John's and to date is still the only player to record the magical feat. Two decades on from that historic knock, Lara is still untouched on the record books while now serving duties in the commentary box for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. Lara scores 400
Having been dismissed for an embarrassing 94 in the previous match and trailing 3-0, West Indies had a task in their hand to avoid a whitewash in the series. Having elected to bat first after winning the toss on Day 1 (April 10, 2004), West Indies were 33/1 in the opening session of the Test match when Lara made his way to the crease. Hardly anyone knew that he would be present for the next 582 balls and 778 minutes in the middle to register the biggest individual accolade in Test cricket.
It would take approximately 48 hours after his arrival on the pitch for Lara to score an unbeaten 400. It was in the opening session of Day 3 when Lara reached thelandmark. During his knock, he had a partnership of 232 runs with Ramnaresh Sarwan (90) and stitched another big stand with Ridley Jacobs (unbeaten 107). With Jacobs, Lara stitched 282 runs for the sixth wicket.

After reaching his 400 West Indies decided to call it a day and declared their innings on 751/5. On a labouring three days, three England bowlers were smashed for more than 100 runs with the ball.
England were dismissed for 285 in response to the total and before being asked to follow on. Marcus Trescothick’s 88 coupled with Michael Vaughan’s 140 saw England score 422/5 on the fifth day of the Test match. This meant that Lara’s historic knock was enough to avoid a whitewash in the four-match Test series as England pocketed the affairs 3-0.
To date, Mahela Jayawardene of Sri Lanka is the only batter to get any closer to the record as he smashed 374 against South Africa in July 2006, but could not break Lara’s legendary feat.
