The organisers of the Paris Olympics 2024 suffered yet another setback on Tuesday (July 30) as the men’s triathlon event was postponed to Wednesday due to the pollution in the river Seine. Having already been on the receiving end of plenty of controversies in the last few days including introducing South Korea as North Korea and hoisting the Olympics flag upside-down, the latest event adds unwanted headlines for the organisers. As things stand, there will be no triathlon at least till Wednesday with chances of further postponement if the situation does not improve.
Men’s triathlon event postponed
“Despite the improvement of water quality levels over the last hours, the readings at some points of the swim course are still above the acceptable limits,” organisers said on Tuesday.
The race has been postponed to Wednesday for 10:45 AM (14:15 IST), immediately after the women’s event, which is scheduled at 8 AM.
A whopping 1.4 billion euros ($1.51 billion) has been spent to make the river Seine pollution-free for the Olympics, but so far there has been huge disappointment for the organising committee. Last week’s rain hascontributed to the pollution in the river which has again left the fans wondering why the events were held in the Seine.

It is reported that the level of bacteria in the river Seine remains at a high percentage making it unfit for the athletes. While the event is postponed to Wednesday, if the situation does not improve, it could lead to further postponements until Friday.
Earlier in July, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo took a dip in the river herself earlier this month, in a bid to convince doubters.
The gamble that the river would be clean enough for the triathlon was never guaranteed to pay off, especially as water quality varies widely day-to-day.
