India’s star athlete Neeraj Chopra is all set to undergo groin surgery after clinching a silver medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Thursday (Aug 8). Neeraj with a throw of 89.45 metreswas successful in clinching second place with Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem bagging the gold medal. However, it is now revealed that Neeraj has been struggling with groin issues in the last few months and is set to go under the knife in the coming days.
According to reports, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medalist in javelin throw has been struggling with a hernia issue which has seen him struggle for the last few months. Despite the problem, Neeraj threw 89.45 metresin the final round while he managed an initial throw of 89.34 metresin the qualification. He also became the fourth Indian athlete in the post-independence era to win multiple Olympic medals.
It is reported that Neeraj has been struggling with groin issues for the last two years due to which he missed the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. He has been far from his best despite winning the silver medal at the Olympics. The 26-year-old despite his best efforts is yet to touch the 90-metremark in his career with close competitor Nadeem throwing 92.97 metresto set a new benchmark.
"I already threw 89.94m (in 2022) with this injury. When I throw, I always focus almost 50 percent on my injury. We have to focus mostly on technique, but it's really hard for me with this injury," Neerajsaid.
"Doctors told me to go for surgery last year. I have been stretching myself till now.., There have been treatments since. But we will have to take a big decision," he added.
