The football fraternity endured a sad day on Thursday (July 2) after Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota died in a tragic road accident in the Zamora province of Spain. Jota, 28, enjoyed a highly successful career and shared the stage with star names like Cristiano Ronaldo, Mohamed Salah and others in a brief career. A fan favourite and one of the best players in the current Portugal team, Jota’s death comes as hard and sorrowful news for the football fraternity, so who was he and what made him so special?
Born in Porto, Portugal, Diogo came through the ranks of Paços de Ferreira, a football club in Portugal before making a mark on the international stage. He also played in the academy of Gondomar before his breakthrough season with Ferreira in 2014. With high potential, his talent did not go unnoticed as several clubs kept a close eye on him. However, it was Atletico Madrid who secured his services in 2016 before loaning him out to Porto and then Wolves.
Diogo’s move was made permanent by Wolves in 2018 after he helped the club clinch promotion to the Premier League. The striker would excel in his role so much that he attracted interest from big sides in the Premier League.
However, it was Liverpool who won the race for his signature in 2020 as Jurgen Klopp signed him for $50million.
He played 123 matches for Liverpool in the Premier League and scored 47 goals while further scoring 18 more in other competitions. Before Liverpool, he played for Wolves in the Premier League for two seasons scoring 16 goals.
The forward played for Portugal at the U19, U21 and U23 levels before making his debut for the senior side in March 2019. Just three months later he would help Portugal win the inaugural Nations League where he shared a dressing room with Cristiano Ronaldo. Diogo and Ronaldo did not stop as they helped Portugal win their second Nations League title in June 2025. In total in played 49 times for Liverpool, scoring 14 goals during a highly successful spell.
Diogo got married to Rute Cardoso just 10 days ago before the tragic news surfaced. The couple has three kids and got married on June 22, but are now left shattered and devastated by the passing of Diogo. They were spotted together on the final day of the Premier League season when Liverpool lifted the title on May 25.
