Poonam Devi, who had come to collect the body of a deceased relative at LNJP Hospital, recalled, "There was suddenly an announcement that the train would arrive at platform 14. People started running, and there was a stampede."
She added, "We were travelling to Chhapra, Bihar, but I don&rsquo;t know which train I was supposed to board. I only came here after hearing that the bodies were kept at the hospital."

Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northern Railway, explained, "When the incident happened, the Magadh Express to Patna was at platform 14, and the Uttar Sampark Kranti to Jammu was at platform 15. A passenger slipped on the stairs, and the people behind him lost balance, leading to the tragic stampede."
He further said, "No train was cancelled, nor was there any platform change. A high-level committee is investigating the matter, and normal operations have resumed at the station."

'Who will take responsibility': Opposition slams centre over New Delhi railway station stampede

A US military aircraft, with 119 Indian immigrants aboard, landed in Amritsar on Saturday night (Feb 15).
One of the deportees has now claimed that they were handcuffed and their legs were chained during the flight.
"Our legs were chained and hands were also cuffed," Daljit Singh told reporters in Hoshiarpur according to news agency PTI.
A C-17 aircraft landed at Amritsar International Airport around 11:40 pm on Saturday, carrying the second batch of 119 Indian deportees from the US. This deportation is part of the Donald Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigrants, which began earlier this month. The first batch of 104 Indians was deported on February 5, and a third batch of 157 deportees is expected to arrive in India on Sunday (Feb 17).

Following the immigration and background checks of the deportees upon their return, two of them were immediately arrested by the police.
Cousin brothers, Sandeep Singh alias Sunny and Pradeep Singh, from Rajpura in Patiala district, were wanted in a murder case registered in Rajpura in the year 2023.
The police stated that the two accused were charged under sections 302, 307, 323, 506, 148, and 149 of the Indian Penal Code in connection with a murder case registered on June 26, 2023, by the Patiala Police. However, authorities clarified that no 'Look Out Circular' was issued against the duo.

One of the family members of the deceased has put forward a conflicting account of the New Delhi Railway Station stampede stating that the deadly incident occurred after a 'sudden announcement' of change in platform.
Poonam Devi, who came to receive the body of the deceased at the LNJP Hospital mortuary on Sunday (Feb 16), said, "There was suddenly an announcement that the train will be coming on platform 14. People started running, and there was a stampede."
"I got information that the bodies have been kept here so I have come here to collect the body of my relative... We were going to Chhapra, Bihar... I have no idea about my train ticket, and neither do I know which train I was supposed to board," she added.&nbsp;

Railway authorities, on the other hand, claim that the platform 13 and 14 were already crowded as people were waiting there to board trains, Magadh Express and Uttar Sampark Kranti when the Prayagraj Express, a special train for Maha Kumbh, was scheduled to depart from platform 14 at 10:10 pm, further exacerbating the congestion.
Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northern Railway, attributed the stampede to a passenger slipping on nearby stairs, which triggered a chaotic rush among the already large crowd on the platform.
He said that there was no change in platform nor was the train cancelled.
"When this tragic incident took place yesterday, at that time, Magadh Express going towards Patna was standing on platform number 14 of New Delhi Railway Station and Uttar Sampark Kranti going towards Jammu was standing on platform number 15. During this, a passenger coming towards platforms 14-15 slipped and fell on the stairs, and many passengers standing behind him were hit, and this tragic incident took place. This is being investigated by a high-level committee," Upadhyay stated.
"No train was cancelled, nor was there any change in platform... The incident is being investigated, so let the committee submit their report and findings. The situation at the platform is normal now. All trains are running at their usual time," he added.

Additionally, there were 4 trains heading to Prayagraj, out of which 3 were delayed, causing unexpected overcrowding," said the police.

<h2>What led to the stampede?</h2>
The situation spiralled out of control due to delayed train departures and the sale of approximately 1,500 general tickets, which added to the already massive crowd, officials stated. Police reported that platforms 13 and 14 at New Delhi Railway Station were packed with passengers waiting to board the delayed Swatantrata Senani and Bhubaneswar Rajdhani trains. To make matters worse, the Prayagraj Express, a special train for Maha Kumbh, was scheduled to depart from platform 14 at 10:10 pm, further exacerbating the congestion.
Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northern Railway, Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, on Sunday (Feb 16), said that a passenger who was rushing towards platforms 14-15 slipped and tumbled on the stairs causing a chain reaction that affected several other passengers standing behind him which led to the deadly stampede.
He further said that the matter was being investigated by a high-level committee.
"When this tragic incident took place yesterday, at that time, Magadh Express going towards Patna was standing on platform number 14 of New Delhi Railway Station and Uttar Sampark Kranti going towards Jammu was standing on platform number 15. During this, a passenger coming towards platforms 14-15 slipped and fell on the stairs, and many passengers standing behind him were hit, and this tragic incident took place. This is being investigated by a high-level committee," Upadhyay stated.
"No train was cancelled, nor was there any change in platform... The incident is being investigated, so let the committee submit their report and findings. The situation at the platform is normal now. All trains are running at their usual time," he added.

Executive Director of Information &amp; Publicity (ED/IP), Railway Board, Dilip Kumar, sharing details about the situation said that on Saturday (Feb 15), the railway station witnessed an unusually high number of passengers, forcing the authorities to run four special trains.
"We received information that a few people fainted - they have been admitted to a local hospital," Kumar said.
"A two-member high-level committee has been formed to investigate the matter. The situation is now under control, and passengers have been accommodated on special trains. Train operations at the station are normal," he added.

Comments come ahead of the key Indian Ocean Conference in the country in which several foreign ministers including EAM Dr S Jaishankar will participate.&nbsp;
Oman will be hosting the 8th edition of the Indian Ocean Conference from February 16th to 17th. The conference is being organised by India Foundation in association with Oman's foreign ministry with the theme being "Voyages to New Horizons of Maritime Partnership". Full interview:
Sidhant Sibal: What has been the focus of this year's Indian Ocean Conference?
Amit Narang: Yes, the eighth Indian Ocean conference is being held, is being hosted here in Oman. As you are aware, the Indian Ocean conference is one of India's flagship maritime events hosted by the India foundation in association with the Ministry of External Affairs. This year, it is being hosted by the Foreign Ministry of the Sultanate of Oman and Dr S Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister will be here to participate in the conference and deliver a keynote address at the inaugural session. Based on my understanding, there are ministers or senior officials from at least 30 countries who are participating. So, it's a large event, getting together all the countries who have a shared interest in the management of the Indian Ocean and the shared spaces. Now, as you are aware, the maritime cooperation, or the cooperation pertaining to the oceanic spaces has been increasingly salient in international relations discussions and dialogs, whether it is your national security or international trade and commerce or even global sustainability, the oceans play a central role. And given the fact that Indian Ocean, you know, the sits around, or rather, has so many countries and continents around the Indian Ocean. You know, it's a very important facet of international dialog today, the trademark of this conference is to bring together all the relevant stakeholders, decision makers and senior officials, to foster dialogue and cooperation on the Indian Ocean and all the issues surrounding it.
Sidhant Sibal: How do you see India, Oman relationship?
Amit Narang: Oman is one of India's closest neighbours. In fact, a maritime neighbour, and the oceanic spaces on the map sometimes hide the fact how close they are to us. To just to give you a perspective, it takes less time to fly from Mumbai to Muscat than it takes to fly from Mumbai to Delhi. That's how close they are to us, and they have always been in the history, a very close maritime partner with the history between the people of India and the people of Oman go back at least 5000 years, and across this time, we have been trading with each other. So, it's a relationship which is based on trade, exchange of goods and ideas and cultures, and it's a remarkable history. And today, this old friendship stands transformed into a strategic partnership. And I must say, over the past few years, especially in the post pandemic phase, that relationship has truly come of age. And today, Oman is playing a very important role for us in this region, a close friend, a close partner, whether it comes to strategic cooperation, defense cooperation, international trade, or issues of people to people. Ties today, the relationship, India Oman relationship, I can say, is truly firing on all cylinders. Last few years have been some notable achievements under our presidency of the G20 you are aware, the Sultan of Oman was our special guest, a guest country. And the participation of the Omani side was very robust, very remarkable. More than 11 ministers participated, and the Omani delegation, they participated in more than 100 meetings all across India. That event really brought the countries together. Then in December 2023 the ruler of Oman, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, paid a state visit to India. This was the first state visit from Oman in more than 26 years. And the discussions with honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji were very, very positive, very forward looking, very comprehensive. And both the leaders adopted the India Oman joint vision document, which is now going to be the roadmap for the future.
Sidhant Sibal: So my final question this relationship, which has a strong base, that is the People to People relationship. Many Indians stay here, for them Oman is a home. If you can shed light on this relationship?
Amit Narang: In fact, the Indian diaspora truly is the highlight of the India Oman relationship. And like you said, you know people, Indians from different parts of India have been coming , visiting and staying in Oman for at least a few 1000 years. We have evidence of that. In the more recent times, there is a part of the Indian community. I mean, there are about seven lakh Indians who are currently resident in Oman, but out of those seven lakhs, there is a small portion of Indians, merchant traders, predominantly from the state of Gujarat, who have been living in this country for between 200 to 300 years. This is recorded history, and today these families are into their sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, even 10th generations and living continuously in Oman. Some of them have become Omani citizens, but they maintain links with India, they maintain their culture, they maintain their traditions, and they're living harmoniously here and contributing to the Omani society. To bring this history back has been an attempt, Government of India, as you are aware, under Prime Minister Modi, prioritizes its relationship with his diaspora, celebrates the diaspora for its achievements in line with that in Oman we made an effort to bring back this history to the people. We did a whole long lecture series running over eight months where we got academics and the people to talk about this history and this remarkable history and the heritage is now being published as part of a book which will be released very soon. Apart from that, we also realized here that this community, by virtue of being living here, they are the custodians of very important documents, photographs, you know, little pieces of evidence which give you great snippets of history on how things were in the olden times. So an attempt has been made to preserve, and I'm very happy to report that for the first time, actually, the entire documentary heritage of the diaspora has now been digitized. This is I'm talking about Oman, has been digitized as part of the portal of the National Archives of India, where a separate portal today has preserved all their documents for future generations. This documentary heritage, diaspora heritage, was presented at an exhibition and in the recently concluded Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas in Bhubaneswar as well. So diaspora relationship with Oman is very important, and that is something that we are also working to bring it back to the public limelight.

Qatar is India's largest supplier of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), providing over 48% of India's global LNG imports. In the fiscal year 2022-23, India's bilateral trade with Qatar was approximately US$ 18.77 billion. Qatar's Energy Minister, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi had visited India earlier this month for India Energy Week. During his visit, Al-Kaabi emphasised Qatar's commitment to supporting India's energy requirements.&nbsp;

India and the US have resolved to more than double the two-way trade to USD 500 billion by 2030 and announced plans for a bilateral trade agreement with a view to bring down duties and increase market access.

On Thursday (Feb 13), Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that those staying in other countries illegally "do not have any legal right to be there," as he addressed the media at a joint press conference alongside US President Donald Trump in Washington DC.
Just days after visuals of Indian citizens in shackles being deported from the US caused uproar in India, Modi, during his visit to the US, said his country was ready to take back its citizens living in America illegally.
While condemning illegal immigration, Modi said it is a symptom of a bigger disease.

He added, "As far as India and the US are concerned, we have always said that those who are verified and are truly the citizens of India &mdash; if they live in the US illegally, India is ready to take them back."
However, he remarked "it doesn't stop just there for us".
The Indian PM said that many of the illegal Indian immigrants in the US are people belonging to poor families led astray by false promises and "big dreams".
"These are people from ordinary families. They are shown big dreams and most of them are such who are misled and brought here."&nbsp;

Sharing his thoughts on Western democracy, the Indian External Affairs Minister said, "I think I appeared to be an optimist in what is relatively a pessimistic panel if not room. I will begin by sticking up my finger and don't take it badly, it is the index finger. This, the mark you see on my nail, is a mark of a person who has just voted. We just had an election in my state (Delhi). Last year, we had a national election. In Indian elections, roughly two-thirds of the eligible voters vote. At the national elections, (out of) the electorate of about 900 million, about 700 million voted. We count the votes in a single day."

We are optimistic about the direction of our democracy and for us democracy is actually delivered," he added.

Responding to whether the countries in the Global South still aspire to a democratic system, Jaishankar said, &ldquo;Look, to an extent, all big countries are unique to an extent. But, we would certainly hope, I mean to the extent, we think of democracy as a universal aspiration, ideally a reality, but at least an aspiration, in large part because India chose a democratic model after independence and it chose a democratic model because we had fundamentally a consultative pluralistic society."
He added that there was a time when the West "treated democracy as a Western characteristic" and "was busy encouraging" non-democratic forces in the Global South.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann slammed the Centre over the deportation of Indian citizens who allegedly entered the US illegally, stating that the government should specify the reason why Amritsar was chosen to land the flights.

He further questioned the government as to why Ahmedabad or any other place was not chosen for the flights carrying illegal migrants to land.
"Sheikh Hasina landed in Hindon, Ghaziabad. Why can these (Indian citizens who allegedly illegally migrated to the US) be landed in Hindon? They should be landed in the National Capital; we will bring our people from there. Amritsar is being chosen deliberately to portray that only Punjabis are illegal migrants. Why is Ahmedabad or Ambala not chosen? BJP always conspires to defame Punjab. They don't let international flights operate from Amritsar, claiming that it is not suitable for it, so why are flights coming in from the US now?" he added.
"I will strictly oppose this. I demand to the MEA and the MHA that the plane is still onboard, change the route and make it land in Delhi, Hindon or Ahmedabad," CM Mann said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rebuffed Mann's allegations and accused him of exploiting the issue for political gains.&nbsp;
"Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann should avoid doing politics on such sensitive issues. AAP leaders do not care about the security of the country; they only do politics," BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal said.&nbsp;
"Amritsar is the nearest international airport for flights entering India from the US. That is why US aircraft carrying illegal immigrants are landing there. Mr Bhagwant Mann, stop politicising the issue and promoting conspiracy theories due to your lack of knowledge," said BJP national spokesperson RP Singh in a post on X.
