Congress candidate from North East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency, Kanhaiya Kumar, was thrashed by seven to eight people on Friday (May 17) as he was out tocampaignahead of polls. The men also tried to throw ink at the Congress leader, who had approached Kanhaiya under the pretext of greeting and garlanding him.

The attack happened as Kumar came out of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) office in Kartar Nagar after meetingwithCouncillor Chhaya Sharma.AAP isthe governing party in Delhi and alsoa part of the Congress-led opposition INDIA bloc.
Chhaya Sharma later also accused the men of harassing her. In a police complaint, Sharma said the men snatched away her shawl and threatened her husband.

“After the meeting, when Chhaya Sharma came down to see off Kanhaiya Kumar, some persons came and put a garland around Kanhaiya Kumar. After garlanding him, some persons threw ink on Kanhaiya Kumar and tried to assault him. When Chhaya Sharma tried to intervene, they misbehaved and threatened her,”North East Deputy Commissioner of Police said.
The video of the incident has now gone viral onthe internet. A separate video showing the suspects has also surfaced, where they canbe seenclaiming responsibility for the attack.

The men say they attacked Kanhaiyafor speaking against the Indian Army and talking about dividing the nation."But we will not allow those who talk about dividing the country to enter Delhi,"one man can be heardsaying.
Kanhaiya later blamed the attack on his rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from the constituency, Manoj Tiwari.In a statement, Kumar saidthe attack must have been ordered by Tiwarias he wasfrustratedwith his rising popularity.
He added that he had sent goons to attack himbutthe public would teach him a lessonon May 25, the date Delhi goes to polls.
