A safety drill at a Coimbatore college went very wrong on Thursday evening, and left a 19-year-old girl dead.

The incident took place at the Kovai Kalaimagal College of Arts and Science. 

Video footage of the incident shows a trainer urging N Logeswari, a second-year BBA student, off a second-floor ledge. In the video, Logeswari looks uncertain. 

News reports quoted police as saying that "even as she was clearly not prepared for the jump", the trainer, R Arumugam, pushed Logeswari.

Logeswari hit her head on the first-foor ledge. Police said she suffered serious injuries to her head and to the right side of her neck.

The reports said students on the ground had been waiting to catch her with a net, and that at least five people had jumped before her and landed safely. 

The reports quoted a source close to the college as saying the safety drill had been carried out by the National Disaster Management Authority.
