A 19-year-old person was allegedly beaten to death on Saturday (May 4) in Ferozepur district of Punjab, over 400 km north of Indian capital New Delhi, after an alleged sacrilege incident.
According to police, Bakshish Singh, a resident of Talli Gulam village, allegedly tore some pages of a sacred religious text after entering a place of worship in Bandala village of Punjab's Ferozepur.
The deceased person's father Lakhwinder Singh claimed that his son had been suffering from a mental illness and was receivingtreatment for the same, Press Trust of India reported.
A First Information Report was registered against 19-year-old individual Bakshish Singh under Section 295-A of the Indian Penal Code at the Arif Ke Police Station, based on a complaint lodged by Lakhvir Singh, chairperson of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Committee.
Reiterating that his son had been mentally disturbed, Bakshish's father alleged that the "police should also register an FIR against those who killed his son," Press Trust of India reported.

Punjab sacrilege incident: What happened?
Police claimed that after tearing several pages from a sacred religious text, the accused attempted to run away. He was apprehended by some and as the word of the purported incident spread, the villagers gathered at the religious place and started beating him up.
Later, he succumbed to his wounds, PTI reported.
Meanwhile, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh expressed his distress over the sacrilege incident and said that the accused person's death was response to the "failure to punish the culprits and give exemplary punishments by law."
Akal Takht in Amritsar's Golden Temple is the highest temporal seat of Sikhs.

Singh claimed that there has been a "well-planned conspiracy" behind the Guru Granth Sahib sacrilege incidents in the last few years.
"For Sikhs, there is nothing above Sri Guru Granth Sahib and incidents of sacrilege badly harm the soul and mentality of Sikhs," he said, PTI reported.
