Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has taken over the Environment portfolio in the state Cabinet, news agency ANI reported.

According to reports, the portfolio, which was previously held by OP Soni, has been allocated to Singh as Soni has now been handed over the Food Processing department.

OP Soni will continue to hold School Education portfolio.

CM Singh, earlier in the day, welcomed the Delhi court's verdict on convicting the accused in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

"Welcome the first conviction by a Delhi court in the 1984 riots case. Justice has finally been meted out to the perpetrators of the heinous crimes. Hope the others involved in the attacks are also soon brought to book for their horrendous and inhuman acts," his tweet read.

A Delhi court on Tuesday announced death penalty to convict Yashpal Singh in the anti-Sikh riots case. This was the first ever capital punishment in the case. Co-convict Naresh Sherawat has been given life-term by the court.
