In the FIR filed with the police, Medha claims that the cook had falsely claimed to be a Brahmin, an upper caste. On discovering the false identity, Medha's religious sentiments were hurt.

In her statement, Medha claims that she was searching for a married Brahmin woman in 2016 to cook for Gauri-Ganesh Festival and death anniversary of her parents.

That is when Nirmala Yadav approached her and allegedly told her name to be Nirmala "Kulkarni". Kulkarni is identified as a Brahmin surname. She was hired.

A year later, a priest who visited Medha's house told her that the cook was not a Brahmin. The scientist then went to the cook's house to confront her. She learned that Nirmala is not a Brahmin and moreover,a widow.

She states that she hascooked in the house only on three occasions--twice during the Gauri Ganesh praying ceremony and once for the death anniversary.
