In a bizarre incident, a man from Karnataka was arrested on Wednesday after he reportedly opened a fake bracnh of Karnataka Bank.
Aafaq Ahmed from Badaun in UP was arrested after police busted the racket near Mulayam Nagar of Phephna area in Ballia district with Rs 1.37 lakh as well asfake papers, three computers, a laptop and 184 passbooks.
The fake branch was allegedly running for over a month.
Ahmed had been running the bank as the branch manager and had changed his name to Vinod Kumar Kambali of Vikhrauli east, Mumbai, reports said.
The police also recovered fake Aadhaar cards and other identities by the same name. The police informed that Ahmed had got Rs 1.37 lakh by opening 15 saving accounts and fixed deposits of local people.
The police also took a huge collection of stationery - including forms, passbooks, three computers, laptop, furniture and other articles.

The police claimed he took applications from people for setting up a ‘franchise’ of the branch in a rural area. For the franchise, he used to demand Rs 60,000 from applicants, they said. It was this act of his that may have led to someone tipping off Karnataka Bank officials, reports said.
