Kashmir Rains: Highways, schools closed; Met says weather to improve from Tuesday afternoon

Jammu and Kashmir has been witnessing continuous rains for the last three days resulting in flash floodsand inundation of roads, leading to the temporary closure of many national highways.

The government of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday (Apr 30) announced the closure of all schools due to the rains in the Kashmir Division. The disaster management team said that Jhelum was flowing very close to the danger mark in Srinagar's Ram Munshi Bagh area at around 18.22ft.

The MeT department has said that the weather will improve from this afternoon and will remain dry till May 5. However, due to the continuous rains, there has been a massive drop in the temperatures. Gulmarg recorded temperature at minus 0.5 degrees.

Authorities have also said that farmers are advised to resume farm operations from May 1 as the weather is to remain dry after that. The rains led to temporary disruption of traffic over higher reaches of Zojila, Sinthan Pass, Mughal Road, Razdan Pass etc. Many areas in North Kashmir have witnessed water logging in low-lying areas.

Authorities also said that there is a possibility of landslides & shooting stones at a few vulnerable places. In higher reaches, there are chances of avalanches.
