Indian activist shows trees can lower the temperature by six degrees Celcius amid heat wave

As intenseheat is being observed in several parts of theworld, Ripudaman Bevli, also known as Plogman of India, an environmentalist and social activist from New Delhi,shares a video on social media to show how trees can significantly affect temperatures.

In the video shared by him on social media, he holds a thermometer reading the temperature of 51.1 degrees Celsius outside his home in the scorching sun. He then walks to a nearby tree and stands under its shade.

After standing for about five minutes under the tree, the thermometer reads 44.1 degrees Celsius, six degrees cooler. He urges people to not only plant but also save the trees. He says to save our future generations and civilisations, we need to protect the trees and forests.

Over the last month, the country experienced severe heat waves. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a heat wave is "a period of unusually high temperatures as compared to what is normally expected over a region."

According to the recent weather report by IMD, the heat wave conditions are likely to prevail overparts of Uttar Pradesh. Although there is a slight respite due to the advancing monsoon in many parts of the country. Themaximum temperatures are not likely to change soon.

There is a relief from heat for coastal regions, as heavy rainfall is expected in many parts of the western, eastern, and northeastern regions of the country.

The highest maximum temperature recorded yesterday (22 June) in the country was 44.6 degrees Celsius at Orai in West Uttar Pradesh.
