India: Woman's headless, naked body found on highway near Kanpur in UP

A woman's headless and naked body was found on the national highway at Gujaini in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur early yesterday, raising suspicion that she was raped, murdered and the body was thrown on the highway.

The incident has triggered a massive hunt for the identification of the deceased. It has also raised suspicions that the woman was raped, murdered and the body was thrown on the highway.

The police officials said that they were examining the CCTV footage in nearby areas to ascertain the identity of the woman.

They further highlighted that in the early hours of Wednesday, a woman of a similar build was seen walking along the highway and the body was found on Wednesday evening.

The body has been sent for postmortem examination, the police added.

A senior police officer said that they are trying to figureout if it is a case of accident or crime and are also trying to confirm if the victim was a local resident or was from someplace else.

Political parties react to incident

Lok Sabha MP and chief of UP's main opposition Samajwadi Party, Akhilesh Yadav slammed the BJP government and demanded exemplary action in the case.

"In another shocking case of crime against women, a woman's headless, naked body was found on a highway in Kanpur. The matter should be investigated fairly and such punishment should be meted out so that criminals get scared and such incidents are not repeated," Yadav said.

He added in a post on X, "An impartial probe should be conducted into this heinous crime rising above political affiliations... concrete steps must be taken to prevent crimes against the women."
