Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on World Environment Day launched 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign encouraging people to plant saplings as a tribute to their mothers.
PM Modi, who was accompanied by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, planted a peepal sapling at Buddha Jayanti Park in New Delhi on Wednesday (June 5).
Taking to his official X handle, he shared a post calling for people to put out a picture of themselves planting the sapling with the hashtag #Plant4Mother.
"Today, on World Environment Day, delighted to start a campaign," he posted on X.
"I call upon everyone, in India and around the world, to plant a tree in the coming days as a tribute to your mother. Do share a picture of you doing so using #Plant4Mother," PM said in a post on X.

He further laid emphasis on how protecting the environment was the need of the hour, urging people to adopt sustainable lifestyle choices.
"This morning, I planted a tree in line with our commitment to protecting Mother Nature and making sustainable lifestyle choices. I urge you all to also contribute to making our planet better," the PM said in another post.
He then underlined how in the past decade the efforts by the country had helped increase India's forest cover.
"It would make you all very happy that in the last decade, India has undertaken numerous collective efforts which have led to increased forest cover across the nation. This is great for our quest towards sustainable development. It is also commendable how local communities have risen to the occasion and taken a lead in this," he wrote.
World Environment Day, which is observed on June 5 every year, marks the start of the 1972 Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. This year's theme is "Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience".
