Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar passes away following battle with cancer

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar passed away on Sunday. He was 63.

The death was announced by President of India from his Twitter handle.

''Extremely sorry to hear of the passing of Shri Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Goa, after an illness borne with fortitude and dignity. An epitome of integrity and dedication in public life, his service to the people of Goa and of India will not be forgotten,'' Ram Nath Kovind tweeted.


Sources said former defence minister Parrikar had been on life support system since late Saturday night.

The centre has announced national mourning on March 18. A State funeral will be accorded to him and National Flag will fly at half-mast in the National Capital and capitals of States and Union Terrorities.

Earlier today, CMO Goa tweeted that Parrikar health is 'extremely critical' and that doctors are trying their best.


Parrikar, who was suffering from a pancreatic ailment, had been in and out of hospitals in Goa, Mumbai, Delhi and New York since February last year.
