The Indian government today extended till December 31 the deadline for linking Personal Account Number (PAN) with the biometric unique identification number or the Aadhaar card.
The deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar for taxpayers was today (August 31), a source said. The revenue department will notify December 31 as the due date for linkage.
The source added that people who do not have Aadhaar can file their Income Tax returns, but their returns will not be processed till they submit their Aadhaar number.
On July 31, the tax department had said that tax return filers would have to link their PAN with Aadhar by August 31 "unless a finding is made that Aadhaar is constitutionally not valid."
Tax filers were allowed to file their annual income returns by August 5 without linking their Aadhaar with PAN. They were required to simply quote the Aadhaar or the acknowledgement number as proof that they had applied for the unique identification card.
The government has granted a similar extension for furnishing Aadhaar for availing the benefits of various social welfare schemes in view of a pending petition before the Supreme Court.
The top court is hearing a bunch of petitions challenging the government's decision to make Aadhaar mandatory for social welfare schemes further hearing in November, which is why the extension was expected, the source said.
The Supreme Court has posted the matter for further hearing in November.
Section 139 AA (2) of the Income Tax Act states that every person who has a PAN as on July 1, 2017, and is eligible to obtain Aadhaar, must intimate his Aadhaar number to tax authorities.
Those exempt from the requirement include non-resident Indians, people who are not citizens of India, those above 80 years of age and residents of the states of Assam, Meghalaya and Jammu and Kashmir.
Incidentally, December 31 is also the deadline for people to link their bank accounts with Aadhaar.
The deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar previously was July 31 but was extended to August 31.
