He earned several National and International awards for his work.

Sen studied physics in his college. As a student, he also participated in the cultural wing of the Communist Party of India.

Expressing condolences at his death, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Bannerjee tweeted today, "Saddened at the passing away of Mrinal Sen. A great loss to the film industry. My condolences to his family".
