‘Can’t let them enter...,’ SC stays Tamil Nadu police action against Sadhguru’s Isha Foundation

India’s top court granted major relief to Indian spiritual teacher Sadhguru on Thursday (Oct 3), as it stayed police action against his Isha Foundation. Thebench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud also transferred the matter to the Supreme Court. The Isha Foundation had moved to the top court against the Madras High Court order that asked it to submit details of all criminal cases against it. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi appeared for Sadhguru in an urgent hearing.
News agency PTI reported that the CJI said no one can let police or army enter a place like this. The court has now ordered Tamil Nadu police to submit a status report directly to it.
The case against the Isha Foundation stems from a habeas corpus petition filed by a retired professor who alleged that his daughters had been brainwashed into living permanently at the Isha Yoga Centre in Coimbatore.
During the hearing Thursday, one of the two woman appeared in the court online and said they were staying at the centre out of their own will. They also alleged that the harassment from their father has been continuing for last eight years.
Earlier on Tuesday,acting on the Madras high court order, Tamil Nadu policelaunched an inquiry against the Isha Foundation.Officials from the police department, the Social Welfare Department and the District Child Protection Committee raided the sprawling premises of Isha Foundation in Thondamuthur.

However, a spokesperson for the foundation later said no searches were conducted by the officials.
“They are enquiring with residents and volunteers, understanding the lifestyle, understanding how they come in and stay etc,” the spokesperson said.
The foundation also denied all allegations levelled against it, while hitting back at the high court order, arguing it can’t expand the scope of this case as the daughters have admitted to living at the center out of their own volition.
