The prime suspect in the murder case of a 29-year-old woman from the Indian city of Bengaluru - whose body was found chopped into pieces and kept inside a fridgeon September 21 - was found dead in Bhadraktown of the Indian state of Odisha on Wednesday (Sep 26), said police.

Karnataka police had launched a manhunt in Odisha to find 30-year-old Mukti Ranjan Ray, who was named the prime suspect in the case after an investigation.

However, he was found to have hanged himself from a tree and died by suicide, according tothe police.

Speaking to The Indian Express, the officer-in-charge of the police station Shantunu Kumar Jena said that they got a report of suicide and the victim was identified as Ray.

“We received the report around 8:15 am. His body was hanging from a roadside tree near Bhuinpur (where he lived). We sent it for postmortem around 9 am and then handed it over to the family,” said Jena.

Odisha’s Additional Director General, Law and Order, Sanjay Kumar, while speaking to The Indian Express, confirmed that they had found a suicide note in which the suspect had purportedly admitted to the crime.

“The Odisha Police have already registered an unnatural death case. Based on the suicide note, the Bengaluru police have confirmed he is the accused in the gruesome murder case,” Kumar told The Indian Express.

Police suspect Ray hanged himself 'fearing arrest'

The police said that they suspect he allegedly hanged himself "fearing arrest" and his body was given to Bengaluru police after conducting its post-mortem examination.

“We strongly suspect that he ended his life fearing arrest in connection with the Bengaluru murder. Bengaluru police had been closing in on the suspect in Bhadrak and Balasore districts for the last three days. We extended all necessary assistance to them,” Bhadrak SP Varun Guntupalli said while speaking to The Times Of India.

The family members of Ray reached Bhadrak on September 24 and identified the body.

In the tragic case, the 29-year-old woman was brutally killed and her body was found chopped into more than 50 pieces inside a fridge in an apartment in the Vyalikaval localityof Bengaluru on September 21, in a case which had stark similarity to Shraddha Walker's killing.
