The dismal quality of housing across Mayotte has compounded the devastating impact of Cyclone Chido on the poverty-stricken French Indian Ocean territory where hundreds, or maybe thousands, are feared dead.
Before the storm hit, around a third of the island's population was living in iron-sheeted huts that never stood a chance against the powerful cyclone.
By the time it was gone, all of Mayotte's shantytowns were flattened, burying lives—and livelihoods—beneath them.
"We fear there will be a considerable number of deaths," a French government official told AFP. "Several hundred, or maybe several thousand."
Mayotte is the poorest part of France, of which it is an integral part. 
Recent official data on the state of housing in Mayotte are hard to come by, but 2017 data published by the National Statistics Institute said 40 per cent of the island's homes are built with metal sheets, and around a third have no access to running water.

<h2>Flimsy </h2>
"They're made of wood, corrugated iron, and situated on hills, on beaten earth," said Florent Vallee, who runs the French Red Cross branch's emergency operations. 
"You can easily imagine the wind barreling into them and the rain creating mudslides."
Over the decades, French authorities have tried to improve housing conditions for the island's population which numbers 320,000 according to official data but is much greater because of an influx of undocumented migrants who do not show up in government statistics.
As recently as the late 1970s, modern building materials were virtually unknown in Mayotte, said Megane Aussedat, a sociologist and expert on informal housing on the island.
Despite government programmes to replace precarious shelters with solid housing, the number of available homes is still inadequate compared to the size of the population and the migration influx.
They are also out of reach for many people in Mayotte, where the median monthly income is 260 euros ($273), compared with around 2,600 euros pretax on the French mainland.
Subsidised housing projects have also been slow to materialise, said Aussedat.
However, since 2018, the authorities have been allowed to raze substandard housing, provided they immediately offered inhabitants new homes.
Such clearing operations, involving massive police contingents, are sometimes thought to have the secondary objective of flushing out undocumented migrants, but Aussedat observed that telling illegals from legal can be a challenge.
"There is almost no family in Mayotte," she said, "where everybody's status is either documented or undocumented."
<h2>Comoros influx </h2>
Mayotte's immigration issue is almost entirely due to an influx from the Comoros, an archipelago whose closest shores are just 70 kilometers (44 miles) from Mayotte, and that declared independence in the 1970s while Mayotte opted to remain French.
As poor as Mayotte is by French standards, the Comoros are even poorer, tempting many there into a perilous journey across the water in search of a better life in Mayotte.
They often end up living in makeshift areas consisting mostly of so-called "bangas"—small" houses made of cloth and thatch.
When Chido hit, many refused to leave their homes, taking their chances with the cyclone  rather than face the danger of their homes being looted or being picked up by the authorities.
Vallee said emergency services had rescued "entire families, and also a lot of children who were left alone."
Sanitary conditions, already precarious, have worsened since, mostly because of patchy access to clean water that could prompt another cholera outbreak like the one in the spring of 2024 that killed seven people, said Jean-Francois Coty, president of the Medecins du Monde NGO.
<h2>'Brakes on healthcare access' </h2>
Undocumented migrants' "fear of moving is putting the brakes on healthcare access," he said.
A French government scheme allowing undocumented people access to state healthcare is not available in Mayotte.

Prosecutors had agreed not to proceed with charges of "causing death by dangerous driving" and "driving without due care and endangering life", the ABC said. His lawyer reportedly told the court that Dennis, 34, did not intend to kill his wife Melissa Hoskins.

Hoskins, a retired track cyclist who represented Australia at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, died in an Adelaide hospital from serious injuries after the incident. She rode in the Australian team that won the team pursuit event at the 2015 Track Cycling World Championships in France.

A 25-year-old pilot, who worked with Air India, allegedly died by suicide on Monday (November 25) and her body was found at her rented apartment in the Andheri suburb of the Indian city of Mumbai.

According to the girl's family, Srishti Tuli was publicly humiliated by her boyfriend for consuming non-veg food at a public event after which the 27-year-old man, identified as Aditya Pandit, was arrested by the police for abetment of suicide.&nbsp;

As per the police, Srishti belonged to Gorakhpur city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and was facing mental health issues.&nbsp;

As per the reports, the girl was being insulted and verbally abused by her boyfriend in different instances.

According to the police, Aditya had even insulted her for eating non-vegetarian food in front of others at an event in Gurugram.&nbsp;

At the event, an argument ensued between them after which Aditya left the woman midway and went home.

On Sunday evening (November 24), when Srishti came back from work she had another argument with Aditya who was at her house. After that, Aditya departed for Delhi around 1 am on Monday (Nov 25).

Aditya then received Srishti's call in which she said that she was going to die by suicide after which he came back to her house.&nbsp;

On reaching her house, Aditya found the door locked and nobody was responding from the inside.

The lock was broken open by Aditya with the help of a key maker after which he discovered her unconscious. He then rushed Srishti to a hospital where she was declared dead.

A complaint was filed by Srishti's family members with the police against Aditya who was accused of abusing her after which the police arrested him on charges of abetment of suicide.

According to the details mentioned in the first information report (FIR), Pandit also forced Srishti Tuli to stop eating non-vegetarian food and change her food habits.

Srishti's uncle Vivekkumar Narendrakumar Tuli&nbsp;filed the FIR at Powai police station and&nbsp;mentioned several instances where she was ill-treated by Aditya.

According to the police, a transaction of Rs 65,000 had also taken place from Srishti's bank account to Aditya recently.

On Tuesday (Nov 26), Aditya was produced in the court and&nbsp;was sent to four-day police custody.&nbsp;

As per the postmortem report, the cause of Srishti's death was strangulation. However, no suicide letter was discovered in the room of the pilot.

In the Karnataka Bhovi Development Corporation scam, S Jeeva was one of the accused who was accused of misusing the funds that were to be given as loans to the Bhovi community members as part of a job scheme.&nbsp;

The CID had been investigating the case. The CID was permitted by the Karnataka High Court to question S. Jeeva between November 14 and November 23 over video conferencing.&nbsp;

However, the CID asked her to appear in person. S Jeeva reached the CID office on November 14, where she was stripped, harassed, and interrogated if she had any cyanide with her.&nbsp;

As per the suicide note, the police officer asked for a bribe from Jeeva and did not accept her submitted documents.&nbsp;

The woman was allegedly harassed for the next few days. As per the FIR, the shop of S. Jeeva was also visited by the police officer, where she was humiliated in the presence of her employees.&nbsp;
