Russia on Wednesday supported India on the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and called it a sovereign and internal matter.

Russian Ambassador Nikolay Kudashev stated that the abrogation is a sovereign decision of the Indian Government.

"All matters between India and Pakistan can be resolved through the Simla agreement. It is an internal matter of India," he said.

Deputy Ambassador Roman Bushkin said, "it is the concern of the international community of growing importance of disarmament".

Calling India a "responsible player," Bushkin said any escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan is a concern.

"We would prefer more dialogue between the two nations. India has no first use doctrine. Dialogue must be streamlined as per the mutually accepted condition," Bushkin added.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Wednesday heard petitions challenging Central government’s decision to abrogate Article 370 and referred the matter to a 5-judge constitution bench. The matter has now been posted for review in October.

The top court has also issued notices to the Centre and state seeking their response on the issue.

Over 10 petitions were filed in the top court related to the recent developments in the Kashmir Valley.
