Bengaluru rape

Days after the brutal rape and murder of a medic in India's West Bengal triggered widespread protests, another case of sexual assault has come to light. A 21-year-old college-going student in Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, was raped by an unknown man in the wee hours of Sunday (Aug 18) morning.

Bengaluru Police are on the lookout for the rapist. As per reports, the 21-year-old had asked the accused for a lift on his two-wheeler. The incident occurred around 1:15 am near Hosur Main Road, as the woman was returning home aftervisiting friends.

What happened?

According to police, the woman had initially been travelling in a car but requested a lift from the man on his motorcycle. Instead of taking her to her destination, the man allegedly drove her to a secluded area and raped her.

The victim managed to send an SOS from her phone, prompting two friends to arrive at the scene. They encountered a man with scratch marks on his face. However, before they could catch him, the manfled from the spot.

The survivor has been admitted to a private hospital where, as per a police officer, she is in a stable condition.

Raman Gupta, Additional Commissioner of Police (East), confirmed that the case is under investigation.

"There is only one suspect. The man who gave her a lift is suspected to be the rapist, and our investigations are on."

The police were verifying why she opted to get a lift on the two-wheeler and who else was involved, said Gupta. The case has been registered under Section 64 (rape) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the HSR Layout police station.

Five teams formed to nab the rapist

Given the rising public outrage over recent violent incidents, including the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, the Bengaluru police have formed five teams to nab the suspect.

The woman, a final-year student at a local college, had been hitch-hiking home to Hebbagodi from a social gathering in Koramangala.

Police have visited the scene and are in contact with the victim and her relatives to further their investigation.
