BJP President Amit Shah visited Shiv Sena chief Uddav Thackeray at his home Matoshree Wednesday night.
It is speculated that he tried to mollify the chief of the Sena, the BJP's oldest political ally but one that the BJP has been having serious trouble with in recent days.
The Shiv Sena has said it will not fight the 2019 elections with the BJP as an ally.
News reports described the visit as part of Shah's "Sampark for Samarthan" campaign, in which he visits famous personalities, gives them a report of the BJP's four years in power, and asks them to endorse the party in the future.
Shah has, as part of his campaign, already met yoga guru Baba Ramdev, former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev, and Ratan Tata.
