A new study says air pollution makes us dumber.

The study was conducted by Xin Zhang of Beijing's School of Statistics, Xi Chen of the Yale School of Public Health, and Xiaobo Zhang of Peking University.

The trio examined data from the national China Family Panel Studies survey.

They studied close to 32,000 people, looking at the effects of short- and long-term pollution on them between the years 2010 and 2014.

"We find that long-term exposure to air pollution impedes cognitive performance in verbal and math tests," the study said.

"We provide evidence that the effect of air pollution on verbal tests becomes more pronounced as people age, especially for men and the less educated," the study added.

"The damage on the aging brain by air pollution likely imposes substantial health and economic costs, considering that cognitive functioning is critical for the elderly for both running daily errands and making high-stake decisions," the study said.

The study added that "most of the population in developing countries live in places with unsafe air."

The study should be thought of as especially alarming in India where air pollution in most major cities and a number of towns is severe.
