After High Court, Supreme Court denies bail to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in excise policy case

The Supreme Court on Wednesday (Aug 14) denied bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the excise policy corruption case, currently under probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Thebench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan flat-out refused to grant the bail while scheduling the matter for further hearing on August 23.
“We are not granting any interim bail. We are issuing a notice," the court said.
Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Kejriwal sought the interim bail on health grounds.
"Just when the ED judgment was about to be delivered, the CBI arrested him. There are health issues involved, and we are pressing for interim bail," said Singhvi.
While Kejriwal appeals for the relief, his aide and former Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia was finally granted bail in the same case by the apex court last week after spending 17 months in jail.

Delhi HC rejects plea
SC rejecting Kejriwal's plea comes a little over a week after the Delhi High Court delivered a similar judgment. The court said the CBI arrest was not "without any justifiable reasons or illegal" while denying the bail.
"Also, it establishes that the loop of evidence against the petitioner got closed after the collection of relevant evidence after his arrest. No malice whatsoever can be gathered from the acts of the respondent (CBI)," the court declared.
CBI contended against the bail saying that the "mere filing of chargesheet" did not give the Delhi CM, the right to bail.
The premier probe agency called Kejriwal the 'sutradhar' (mastermind) of the scam, adding that without his arrest, "the investigation would not have been completed".
CBI in its chargesheet claimed that Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) receivedkickbacks of around Rs 90-100 crore ($10.7-11.9 million) through co-accused Vijay Nair, Abhishek Boinpally and Dinesh Arora to make changes to the excise policy 2021-22.
The money was allegedly used in the 2022 Goa assembly elections where AAP contested against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
