The Delhi High Court reversed the acquittal of Congress MP Sajjan Kumar for alleged involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Monday hailed the Delhi High Court ruling that convicted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar for his involvement in 1984 anti-Sikh carnage.

The Delhi High Court reversed the acquittal of Congress MP Sajjan Kumar for alleged involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

"I want to thank PM Modi that on Shiromani Akali Dal's request in 2015 he set up a SIT to probe 1984 massacre. It's a historic judgement. Wheels of justice have finally moved. It is Sajjan Kumar today, it will be Jagdish Tytler tomorrow then Kamal Nath and eventually the Gandhi family," said Harsimrat Kaur Badal.

Shortly after the verdict, Harsimrat Badal took to microblogging site Twitter saying “Justice at last! Sajjan Kumar to spend life in jail for taking Sikh lives. SIT formed by PM Narendra Modi Ji shows impact. This is what change in government can do”.

The court has asked Sajjan Kumar to surrender by 31 December.

"Khoon ka badla khoon, jab ek bada darakht girta hai to dharti hilti hi hai.' When a PM says these words on national television...we were trying to protect ourselves and were saved by the almighty. Thousands of innocent were brutally killed before their families. Congress leaders, at the behest of the PM, went to Sikh houses along with police. Even today when I think of all that happened, it gives me goosebumps. Children were crying, they could not utter a word. I still remember it today," Union Minister added.
