The Jagannath Rath Yatra officially began in the holy city of Puri, Odisha, a south-eastern city, on July 16. The massive nine-day festival of chariots, running through to the return procession (Bahuda Yatra) on July 24, is celebrated on the second day (Dwitiya Tithi) of the waxing moon in the Hindu month of Ashadha. But do you know one of the oldest traditions followed every year is when Lord Jagannath visits Aunt's temple in Puri?

What is the story behind Lord Jagannath visiting Aunt's temple in Puri?

Lord Jagannath visits his aunt's temple (Mausi Maa Temple) every year during the Rath Yatra festival, but this event takes place in Puri, Odisha, not in Dharmasthala. Dharmasthala is a prominent temple town in Karnataka known for the Sri Manjunatha Temple. The "aunt's temple" is known as the Gundicha Temple. It is located about 3 kilometres from the main Jagannath Temple. During the Rath Yatra, Lord Jagannath, along with his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra, rides in massive, newly constructed wooden chariots to the Gundicha Temple.

According to sacred traditions, the Gundicha temple is associated with Queen Gundicha, the devoted wife of King Indradyumna, who is believed to have played a significant role in establishing the worship of Lord Jagannath.

Also Read: WATCH | Crowd forms human chain to create ambulance corridor during Jagannath Rath Yatra

As per the legend in several reports, Devi Subhadra expressed a strong desire to visit her aunt (Queen Gundicha). To fulfil her wish, Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra placed her on a chariot and embarked on a grand journey from the main shrine (the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha) to the Gundicha Temple. Another legend suggests that the Gundicha Temple is the exact place where Lord Brahma created the original wooden idols. Thus, the aunt’s house is also celebrated as the birthplace of the deities.

Also Read: Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra begins amid IMD's forecast for heavy rain

On their way back to the main temple (Bahuda Yatra), the chariots stop at the Mausi Maa Temple (the aunt's shrine). The annual Jagannath Rath Yatra is filled with centuries-old traditions, but one of its most cherished rituals is Lord Jagannath's visit to Aunt's place (also called a temple or house) in Puri. Read more to know about the sacred tradition which is held every year.

WION's review of The Odyssey

According to WION's Shomini Sen, “The Odyssey is 172 minutes long but has no dull moment. Christopher Nolan weaves a magical tale of mythical islands, of forbidden forests, of treacherous voyages and of a King desperate to go back home. At the same time, The Odyssey is a story of redemption, of penance, of loyalty, of learning from mistakes. Above all, it talks of the futility of war and that perhaps should be a good enough reason to watch this film. If there is any film that you need to watch this weekend, it should be The Odyssey."
Moreover, Anurag Kashyap's review for Rao Bahadur reads - "It's not a film, it's an opera. Fantastical, modernist, magic realism, gender politics, musings on patriarchy, ballsy, and enviable to me as a filmmaker. Needs guts to make it and more guts to produce it and put it out there. It also needs a rewatch to get all the nuances which are so deep rooted in culture. Best written songs in cinema in a long while. Wish I knew Telugu to enjoy it more. Venkatesh Maha is a genius, remember meeting him once in Hyderabad when he told me what he wants to do next and I didn't expect this. Satyadev is just too good. Both young and old. Stuck in time. His spiralling madness speaks of the time in so many ways. To articulate better a second viewing is required. The nostalgic Rao Bahadur's various obsessions speak to me in a very direct way. I love Venky Maha.. just do man what you do. More power to you. Incredible writing like it was written on a hallucinogen. Phew. Never written so much about any film."

Rao Bahardur been widely applauded for its layered storytelling, bold narrative, technically accomplished filmmaking, and exceptional performances, with many praising its rare and refreshing concept executed with remarkable conviction and finesse.

Rao Bahadur blends psychological drama with the fading echoes of an aristocratic past. Venkatesh Maha, who handles writing, direction, and editing, seems to be shaping a story that is deeply rooted in local sensibilities while carrying universal emotional resonance.

The film is backed by a strong technical team, with Kartik Parmar handling cinematography, Smaran Sai composing the music, and Rohan Singh crafting the film’s distinctive production design.

With its blend of regal imagery and cryptic undertones, Rao Bahadur is a film that draws audiences into a world where every detail may hold deeper meaning.
Why can't Indian audiences watch The Odyssey in IMAX 70mm?

Making it the first feature film to be shot fully on IMAX, Christopher Nolan's epic take on the Greek myth is being screened on 70mm IMAX, which has a limited number of screens worldwide. While international fans can witness the grand-scale saga in its preferred format, Indian audiences will not be able to watch it in the same way.

Some of the action sequences are very demanding, almost grueling, but despite the challenges, she has been able to accomplish this. Raaka is Atlee's ambitious sci-fi fantasy action spectacle, headlined by Allu Arjun and Deepika Padukone. The movie is scheduled to release in 2027, and before Padukone goes for maternity break, she's making sure to complete all the work.

Deepika Padukone is one of the most acclaimed actors in Indian cinema. Over the last two years, the actress focused on motherhood, but that doesn’t mean her work has suffered. She has advocated for 8-hour shifts and is choosing her battles carefully. Deepika is currently pregnant with her second child, and yet again she’s setting an example by continuing to work on her next big project, Raaka. From the red carpet to high-octane film sets, actresses are rewriting the rules for mothers-to-be. Anne Hathaway epitomized glamour and resilience by walking red carpets in high heels during her second trimester. Meanwhile, Deepika, in her third trimester, is actively shooting for her upcoming film, Raaka. Also read: Fact check: Did Deepika Padukone post (and delete) IG story for Sonam Wangchuk? As per a recent report by Variety India, the actress has been shooting every day non-stop for “Raaka.” Despite her advocacy for a structured eight-hour workday and work-life balance, Deepika Padukone remains fully committed to wrapping up her upcoming film, “Raaka,” on schedule. At seven months pregnant, the actress is pushing boundaries by pulling night shifts and executing physically demanding action sequences. Pouring all her focus into the project before embarking on maternity leave, she has successfully managed the film’s high-octane requirements and has been able to accomplish that.
